Radiative charge transfer ifetime of the excited state of (NaCa) + arxiv:physics/ v2 24 Jan 2003 Oeg P. Makarov, Λ R. C^oté, H. Miches, and W. W. Smith Department of Physics, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, (Dated: January 27, 2003) New experiments were proposed recenty to investigate the regime of cod atomic and moecuar ion-atom coision processes in a specia hybrid neutra-atom ion trap under high vacuum conditions. The coisiona cooing of aser pre-cooed Ca + ions by utracod Na atoms is being studied. Modeing this process requires knowedge of the radiative ifetime of the excited singet A 1 ± + state of the (NaCa) + moecuar system. We cacuate the rate coefficient for radiative charge transfer using a semicassica approach. The dipoe radia matrix eements between the ground and the excited states, and the potentia curves were cacuated using Compete Active Space Sef-Consistent fied and Möer-Pesset second order perturbation theory (CASSCF/MP2) with an extended Gaussian basis, G(3df). The semicassica charge transfer rate coefficient was averaged over a therma Maxweian distribution. In addition we aso present eastic coision cross sections and the spinexchange cross section. The rate coefficient for charge transfer was found to be 2: cm 3 /sec, whie those for the eastic and spin-exchange cross sections were found to be severa orders of magnitude higher (1: cm 3 /sec and 2: cm 3 /sec, respectivey). This confirms our assumption that the mii-kevin regime of coisiona cooing of cacium ions by sodium atoms is favorabe with the respect to ow oss of cacium ions due to the charge transfer. PACS numbers: Pj, Qb, Pm, Fi I. INTRODUCTION A broad range of techniques from atomic physics and optics have aowed the accurate manipuation of utracod sampes. Recent studies are probing utracod atomic systems in which eectric charges may pay an important roe [1, 2, 3]. These incude utracod pasmas [4, 5, 6, 7], utracod Rydberg gases [8, 9], as we as ionization experiments in a BEC [10]. Recenty, we proposed experiments on simutaneousy cooing and trapping ions and atoms in the same confined space [11]. The proposed experiments wi investigate the regime of cod atomic and moecuar ion-atom coision processes in a specia hybrid neutra-atom ion trap under high vacuum coisions. The idea is to use the techniques of aser cooing, trapping and manipuation of cod neutra atoms to make a refrigerator for the sympathetic cooing of an overapping sampe of atomic or moecuar ions to very ow temperatures. We intend to probe fundamenta coision processes and cooing kinetics in as ow a temperature range as possibe. The hybrid trap we have buit consists of a conventiona magneto-optic neutra atom trap (MOT) combined with a inear Pau radiofrequency quadrupe trap. The inear Pau trap, with ongitudina eectrostatic confinement, is chosen so as to suppress most of the micromotion and r.f. heating associated with conventiona Pau traps [12]. Λ Eectronic address: Oeg.Makarov@UConn.edu II. POTENTIAL CURVES AND DIPOLE MOMENT To cacuate the cross sections and rate coefficients for the charge transfer and the eastic and spin-exchange coisions we have performed ab initio cacuations of the adiabatic potentia curves for (NaCa) + moecuar system in the X 1 ± +, a 3 ± + and A 1 ± + states, which go asymptoticay to the ground (Na + +Ca) and excited (Ca + +Na(3s)) states of the ion-atom quasimoecuar system. The method used was second order Möer-Pesset perturbation theory (MP2) using a Gaussian tripe zeta+diffuse+poarization basis set, G(3df). This basis set incuded three sets of d-poarization functions and one set of f-poarization functions in addition to a diffuse function on each atomic center. The first excited A 1 ± + state was optimized for the second root of a CASSCF (Compete Active Space Sef-Consistent Fied) using eight orbitas in the active space. This was foowed with an MP2 (Möer-Pesset second order perturbation theory) correction to the optimized CASSCF energy. Figure 1 shows the potentia curves of the ground and excited states of (NaCa) + moecuar system in atomic units (a.u.) (see aso Tabe I). The curves were obtained by performing a cubic spine fit to the cacuated points. At sma internucear separations R, the potentia curves were approximated with the short-range potentia of the form V (R) =(A=R) exp( BR), where A and B are fitting parameters, and for R>30 a 0, the potentia curves were fitted with the appropriate ong-range potentias. For the excited states, the ong-range potentia was of the form V (R) ο : R 4 R 6 R 8 (1)

CROSS SECTIONS FIG. 2: Cacuated radia transition dipoe matrix eements. The matrix eements are cacuated at distances R >8 a 0 ony, because the current probem did not require the knowedge of the matrix eements at ower inter-nucear distances due to sma energies of the approaching sodium atoms. where the Na dipoe (162.7 e 2 a 3 0 ), quadrupoe (1902 e 2 a 5 0), and octupoe (55,518 e 2 a 7 0) poarizabiities were taken from Ref.[1]. For the ground state X 1 ± +, the form of the ong-range potentia was ff V (R) ο 1 2 R 4 ; (2) where ff = 156 e 2 a 3 0 is the dipoe poarizabiity of the cacium atom. Figure 2 shows the cacuated radia dipoe matrix eement between X 1 ± + and A 1 ± + states fitted with cubic spines (see aso Tabe I). The dipoe matrix eements were cacuated for R>8a 0 ony, since for our purposes the probem did not require the exact knowedge of the A neutra atom of Na coides easticay with Ca + in the singet A 1 ± + or tripet a 3 ± + states of NaCa +. The corresponding eastic cross sections are given by ff S;T e: = 4ß k 2 1X =0 (2 + 1) sin 2 ( S;T ) ; (3) where k = p 2μE=~ with μ the reduced mass and E the coision energy in the center of mass system, and S;T is the th partia wave phase shift corresponding to the A 1 ± + and a 3 ± + states, respectivey. Another possibe outcome of the coision between Na and Ca + is spinexchange. In the eastic approximation [13], aso known as the Degenerate Interna States (DIS) approximation [14], one describes this scattering process in terms of the singet and tripet scattering phase shifts, and the spinexchange cross section is given by ff exch: = ß k 2 1X =0 (2 + 1) sin 2 ( S T ) : (4)
3 Athough this approximation is vaid for coision energies arger than the hyperfine spitting, it usuay gives the right order of magnitude at smaer energies [15]. The phase shifts S;T are determined from the continuum eigenfunctions y S;T (R), which are the reguar soutions of the partia wave equation d 2 dr 2 + k2 2μ ~ 2 V S;T (R) ( +1) R 2 y S;T (R) =0: (5) The asymptotic form of y S;T (R) at arge distances gives the eastic scattering phase shifts y S;T (R) ο sin» kr ß 2 + S;T (k) : (6) The resuts of our cacuations are shown on Figs. 3 and 4 for the singet and tripet eastic cross sections, respectivey, and on Fig. 5 for the spin-exchange cross section. In a cases, the s-wave contribution is dominant at energies corresponding to temperatures beow 1 nk, in sharp contrast to neutra akai atoms where this take pace for energies around 100 μk [16]. This is due to the very ong range of the poarization potentia as compared to the shorter range of van der Waas interactions between neutra atoms. Our ab initio potentia curves are not of sufficient accuracy enough to predict the s- wave scattering engths associated with the singet and tripet potentias with a fair degree of certainty: the measurements that wi be reaized in our proposed hybrid MOT woud hep fine-tuning the potentias so that accurate estimates of the scattering engths coud be given. As E increases, many more partia waves contribute to the cross sections: aready at E=k B ο 1 μk, 7 partia waves are necessary, and over 30 are required at 1 mk. Athough shape resonances may pay an important roe at very sma energies, their effect is not dominant for E=k B arger than 100 μk (see the smooth behavior of the cross sections in Figs.3-5). This rapid growth in the number of partia waves ed us to consider semicassica approximations for the cross sections. Foowing the method described in [1], we found that the cross sections are we represented by power-aw functions of energy for the temperature range down to μk. Figures 3-5show the cacuated coision cross sections together with the power-aw fits ff e: (E) = C e: E 1=3 ; (7) ff exch: (E) = C exch: E 1=2 ; (8) where C e: = 5310 and 5070 for the singet A 1 ± + and tripet a 3 ± + states, respectivey, and C exch: = 44. These coefficients were obtained by performing a inear fit of the cross sections potted on a og-og scae in the energy range above 1 μk. A quantities are expressed in atomic units. Using these approximate cross sections, we can cacuate the various rate coefficients R = hffvi, where FIG. 3: Eastic coision cross section for the A 1 ± + state of moecuar system (NaCa) +. The eastic cross section above 10 μk fits the approximate expression ff(e) = 5310E 1=3, where the energy is in units of Hartrees and the cross section is in units of a 2 0. p v = 2E=μ is the reative veocity, and h i impies averaging over the veocity distribution. Assuming a Maxweian veocity distribution characterized by the temperature T,we obtain the foowing rate coefficients r 8 5 R e: = (k B T ) 1=6 C e: ; (9) ßμ 3 r 2 R exch: = μ C exch:; (10) in atomic units. Note that whie R exch: is independent of temperature, R e: varies very sowy with T. Figs. 3-5 show that the power aw fits are vaid at temperatures 1 10 μk and higher, which vaidates the semicassica approach to cacuating the rate coefficients for eastic and spin-exchange coisions. As an exampe, suitabe for the proposed experiment, we evauated the rates for a temperature of 1 mk. They are R e: =1:7 1:8 a.u. for eastic coisions and R exch: = 0:38 a.u. for spin-exchange coisions. Converting to units cm 3 sec 1,we obtain R e: =(1:05 1:10) 10 8 cm 3 sec 1 and R exch: = 2: cm 3 sec 1. For atypica MOT partice density n = cm 3 these rates give the foowing vaues for effective eastic ifetimes 1=fi: 1=fi e: = R e: n =(1:05 1:10) 10 2 sec 1, and 1=fi exch: = R exch: n =23:3 sec 1. IV. RADIATIVE CHARGE TRANSFER The rate coefficient for radiative charge transfer may be expressed as an integra of the transition probabiity over the coision path, averaged over the initia veocities and the impact parameters [17]. Because many partia waves contribute even at 1 μk, we use a semicassica
FIG. 4: Eastic coision cross section for the a 3 ± + state of moecuar system (NaCa) +. The eastic cross section above 10 μk fits the approximate expression ff(e) = 5070E 1=3, where the energy is in units of Hartrees and the cross section is in units of a FIG. 5: Spin-exchange coision cross section between states A 1 ± + and a 3 ± + of the moecuar system (NaCa) +. The cross section fits the expression ff(e) =44E 1=2, where the energy is in units of Hartrees and the cross section is in units of a 2 0. treatment where the cross section for radiative charge transfer may be expressed as [18] ff(e) = 2ß 2μ 1=2 E Z 1 Z 1 A(R) bdb dr [1 V (R)=E b 2 =R 2 ] ; 1=2 0 R0 (11) where b is the impact parameter, R 0 is the cassica turning point (distance of cosest approach), A(R) is the Einstein spontaneous emission transition probabiity, and V (R) is the entrance channe potentia curve. Again, we can obtain a rate coefficient R tr = hffvi by averaging over a Maxweian veocity distribution characterized by T [19] R tr = 8 p ß 1 3=2 Z 1 Z 1 de db k B T 0 0 Z 1 dr be1=2 A(R)e E=kBT [1 b 2 =R 2 V (R)=E] R0 The transition probabiities are approximated by 1=2 : (12) A(R) = 4 3 ff3! 3 (R)D(R) a:u:; (13) where ff is the fine structure constant, D(R) is the dipoe moment (see Fig. 2) and ~!(R) =V n (R) V n 0(R) (14) is the energy difference between the entrance and exit potentia curves (here A 1 ± + and X 1 ± +, respectivey), a at a separation R. Note that the effect of possibe shape resonances is not taken into account in Eq.(12): as mentioned in the previous section, shape resonances are not reevant for E=k B ο 100 μk or higher (athough they may pay a roe at much ower energies). The integrations of the Eq. (12) were evauated numericay for temperatures ranging from 1 mk to 1000 K. The rate coefficient was found to be independent of temperature and was practicay constant with the vaue of R tr =2: cm 3 /sec. With the attainabe densities of utracod sodium atoms of the order of n = cm 3, the rate coefficient gives for the the radiative ifetime of the excited A 1 ± + state fi =1=(R tr n) ο 4 4 sec; (15) or in the range from severa hours to severa days. Parentheticay, we note that, athough charge transfer without photon emission is possibe at higher coision energies (many ev), in the 1K range and beow, the sma couping between the a and X states of (NaCa) + (see Figure 1) makes the rate for nonradiative charge transfer negigibe. We aso considered the possibiity of a charge transfer process that coud occur by aser excitation from the A 1 ± + state of NaCa + to a higher moecuar state that correates with Na + (3s) pus an excited Ca eve. The two waveengths that must be considered are Na(3s! 3p) at nm and Ca + (4s! 4p) at nm. An examination of the asymptotic imits of moecuar states ying above Na(3s)+ Ca + (4s) indicates that the cosest excited eve woud correspond to Na + (3s) + Ca[ 1 P(4p)] at nm, too far from resonance to be of importance.[20] V. CONCLUSION In concusion, we have shown that the semicassica approach to evauating the rate coefficients is a good approximation because many partia waves are invoved
5 even at ο 1 mk. The excited singet state of the coiding moecuar system (NaCa) + is metastabe against radiative charge transfer with the ifetime of the order of many hours. At the same time, the rates for eastic coisions and aso for spin exchange are much greater, which provides an efficient mechanism for sympathetic coisiona cooing of cacium ions by sodium atoms in the mev regime and beow. We are setting up an experiment to measure coisiona cooing by this mechanism.
