Recently developed methods or 1 2 transition matrix elements in a inite volume now enable the determination o radiative decay rates o rongly unable particles. Our lattice QCD udy ocuses on the process ππ πγ, where the ρ meson is present as an enhancement in the cross-section. We use 2+1 lavors o clover ermions at a pion mass o approximately 320 MeV and a lattice size o approximately 3.6 m. The required 2-point and 3-point correlation unctions are conructed rom a set o orward, uential and ochaic light quark propagators. In addition to determining the ρ meson resonance parameters via the Lüscher method, the scattering phase shit is used in conjunction with the 1 2 transition matrix element ormalism o Briceño, Hansen and Walker-Loud [1] to compute the ππ πγ amplitude at several values o the momentum transer and ππ invariant mass. 34th annual International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory July 2016 University o Southampton, UK Speaker. c Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms o the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).
2 A udy o the radiative transition ππ πγ with lattice QCD 1. Introduction Lattice QCD udies in the pa have ocused on calculations o hadronic masses within the single-hadron approach, resonance masses and their corresponding rong decay widths via the Lüscher method [2], as well as orm actors and matrix elements involving transitions between hadrons able under the rong interaction. There were also some exploratory calculations o matrix elements involving unable hadrons, where the eects o the rong decay were neglected [3, 4], leading to uncontrolled inite volume eects. The eect o the multi-hadron ate or the K ππ decay was ir described by Lellouch and Lüscher [5] and was extended to all elaic ates below the inelaic threshold [6]. The Lellouch- Lüscher actor, which encodes the inite volume eects that aect the transition matrix elements, has been generalized to describe also hadrons in a moving rame [7]. The inclusion o multiple decay channel modes o the unable hadron have been addressed in [8] and a speciic setup to calculate the Nγ decay was proposed in [9]. A recent paper by Briceño, Hansen and Walker- Loud [1] was the ir to derive the eects in quantum ield theory as well as put orward a ull general setup or 1 2 transition matrix elements involving an arbitrary number o coupled twohadron channels. The ir udy employing the ormalism o Briceño, Hansen and Walker-Loud (BHWL) was perormed by the Hadron Spectrum collaboration only recently [10, 11], or the ππ( ρ) πγ transition amplitude. In our work we udy the same channel, but use dierent methods to conruct the correlation unctions. 2. On the Briceño-Hansen-Walker-Loud ormalism The inite volume eects o the transition matrix element we consider in this work are described by F IV (ν;jµ QED ;q 2,s ππ ) 2 n,λ,ν, p ππ Jµ QED π, p π = 32πE π 2 k sππ [ δ 1 ( s ππ ) E ππ + φ pππ 1 (k)] E ππ (2.1) where φ p ππ 1 (k) comes rom the quantization condition o the Lüscher method, cotδ 1 +cotφ p ππ 1 (k) = 0, k is related to s ππ via s ππ = 2 m 2 π + k 2, δ 1 is the phase shit that describes the ππ resonant scattering, n,λ,ν, p ππ Jµ QED π, p π is the inite volume matrix element and F IV is the ininite volume matrix element, which can be urther reduced by taking into account the Lorentz symmetry. E ππ is the energy o the given ate n in the irrep Λ as determined by the spectrum udy. The actor on the right-hand-side is reerred to as the Lellouch-Lüscher actor [5] and represents the mapping rom the inite volume matrix element to the ininite volume transition amplitude. The basic idea o the BHWL ormalism is to calculate the Lellouch-Lüscher actor using prior knowledge and then perorm the mapping rom the inite volume to the ininite volume. This is done not only or the ground ate, but or all relevant ates in the lattice irrep in which the unable hadron, in our case the ρ, is present. Thus, an essential part o the BHWL ormalism is the spectroscopy udy, where the phase shit in a given channel (in our case elaic ππ scattering) is calculated with the Lüscher method and its generalizations [2]. This provides us with two quantities - the phase shit needed to determine the mapping, and the speciic linear combinations o interpolating operators that create a well 1
3 A udy o the radiative transition ππ πγ with lattice QCD deined speciic ate. These combinations yield the optimized correlators [12], and give us access to the matrix elements at several dierent values o the ππ invariant mass. A simple outline o the procedure we employ to determine the ininite volume amplitude looks like: 1) perorm a lattice calculation o ππ p-wave resonant scattering in the multi-hadron approach and determine the phase shit with the Lüscher method 2) determine the parameters o the Breit-Wigner phase shit orm and calculate the derivative o the phase shit with respect to the two-particle energy or the given Breit-Wigner parametrization 3) calculate the ππ πγ three point unctions involving both qγ i q and ππ interpolating operators and utilize the inormation rom 1) to project them to deinite ates 4) use the derivative o the phase shit rom 2) combined with the unction φ pππ 1 (k) E ππ to determine the mapping rom the inite volume matrix elements to the ininite volume amplitude. 3. Conruction o the correlation unctions To calculate the 2-point and 3-point correlation unctions we adapted a method using a combination o orward, uential, and ochaic propagators. The orward quark propagator S rom the initial point ( x i,t i ) to the inal point ( x,t ) is the inverse o the Dirac operator D: ( x,t ) S ( x i,t i) S ( x,t ; x i,t i ) ab αβ = D 1 ( x,t ; x i,t i ) ab αβ, (3.1) where α,β are spin indices and a,b are color indices. The uential propagator describes a quark low through a vertex o a given lavor and Lorentz ructure. It is obtained by using the product o a orward propagator and the gamma matrix in the vertex as a the source or the solver. It requires 12 inversions (one or each spin and color index) or each diinct uential source time t, momentum p and and Γ matrix: ( x,t) Γ( p) S ( xi,ti) S ( x,t ; x i,t i ;t, p,γ) = D 1 ( x,t ; x,t )Γe i p x S ( x,t ; x i,t i ). x (3.2) The ochaic timeslice-to-all propagator is deined as by the inversion o the Dirac matrix on a ochaic timeslice momentum source: S ( x,t ) ( p i,t i) ξ (t i, p i ) t, x,β,b = δ t,ti e i p i y ξ (t i ) y,β,b. φ(t i, p) = D 1 ξ (t i, p) (3.3) y This technique provides an eicient way to evaluate the partially disconnected diagrams involved in typical multi-hadron udies with reasonable co. In addition to time-dilution o the ochaic momentum source, we also apply spin-dilution to make use o the eicient one-end-trick in our contractions: ξ (t i, p i,α) t, x,β,b = δ t,ti δ α,β e i p i y ξ (t i ) y,b. (3.4) y 2
4 A udy o the radiative transition ππ πγ with lattice QCD To enhance the overlap to the low lying ates contributing to a correlator we apply source and sink smearing to the propagator types lied above by replacing S X W S X W, where W denotes the Wuppertal-smearing operator [13] and X {,, }. To determine the ππ p-wave phase shit we calculate the 2-point correlation unctions in the multi-hadron approach, within which we build a correlation matrix C i j (t) = O i (t)o j (0) rom two types o interpolating operators O qq and O ππ : O qq ν qγ ν q( p ππ ), O ππ ν π + ( p 1 )π ( p 2 ), (3.5) where p ππ = p 1 + p 2 and Γ ν = {γ ν,γ 4 γ ν }. We project these correlation unctions to deinite ππ momenta, where p ππ = 2π L (0,0,0), 2π L (0,0,1), 2π L (0,1,1) and their permutations. We combine the interpolators in such a manner that each is in a well deined irreducible representation, which are conructed by the projection operator deined in Eq. (13) o [14]. Schematically, the Wick diagrams involved in conructing the correlation matrix are presented in Figure 1 and are built using the propagators deined above. qq ππ qq a) dγ νu dγνu b) dγ νu ππ c) dγ νu d) e) Figure 1: The correlation matrix C i j or the 2-point unctions, which involves 4 types o diagrams that are built rom the propagators deined in Section 3. The spectrum in each o the momentum rames and irreps is obtained by solving the generalized eigenvalue problem (or details on GEVP see [15] and [16]) C(t)u n (t) = λ n (t,t 0 )C(t 0 )u n (t). We use t 0 = 2 and checked that or t 0 up to 6 the spectrum is consient with our choice. The (I)J PC = (1)1 elaic ππ scattering phase shit is obtained using the Lüscher method [2] as well as its generalizations [17, 18]. The relevant equations or the mapping rom the inite volume to the ininite volume are lied in [19], and a comparison o previous udies can be ound in [20]. To determine the 3-point correlation unctions C 3 that project to a deinite ate in the irreducible representation, we calculate the 3-point unctions C i 3 : tj) e Eπ(tJ ti) C3(t i J,t i,t ) = 0 O i n,λ,ν n,λ,ν, J µ QED π, p π π O π 0 e En(t, (3.6) n Λ, p ππ 2E π E n where t J is the current insertion timeslice, t i is the pion creation timeslice and t is the ππ channel annihilation timeslice. Jµ QED is the QED current, Jµ QED = Z V ( 3ūγ 2 µu 1 3dγ µ d) and Z V = (24). The index i runs over the interpolators used in the 2-point unction part and includes 3

We have not yet included the disconnected diagrams in b) and c) to the correlation unction. both the ππ and qq interpolators to describe the ρ/ππ ate. All the relevant 3-point unctions are shown in Fig. 2, however we have not yet included the disconnected terms in Fig. 2b) and c). The projection to the deinite ate is done by using the idea o the optimized correlator [12, 21, 22] to conruct combination o the C3 i that will have the be possible overlap to a given ate, C 3 (n,t J,t i,t ) = u i nc3 i (t J,t i,t ). To determine the matrix elements n,λ,ν, p ππ Jµ QED π, p π, where n marks the ate in the irrep Λ with polarization ν and momentum p ππ, rom the 3-point unctions, we use a ratio similar to those deined in [23]: R(n,t J,t i,t ) = C 3 (n,t J,t i,t )C 3 (n,t +t i t J,t i,t ) C (n) 2 (t,t i )C (π) 2 (t,t i ) n,λ,ν, p ππ J µ QED π, p π 2. (3.7) We determine the amplitude F IV (ν;j QED µ ;q 2,s ππ ) or the ππ πγ transition by mapping the inite volume matrix elements to the ininite volume matrix elements using Eq. (2.1) and then perorming the Lorentz invariant decomposition: F IV (ν;j QED µ ;q 2,s ππ ) = ππ,π (q 2,s ππ )ε µναβ (p ππ ) α (p π ) β, (3.8) where q = p π p ππ and ππ,π is the Lorentz invariant amplitude. 4. Preliminary results and conclusions Our results are obtained on a lattice gauge ensemble with N = dynamical clover-wilson ermions, which is described in detail in re. [24]. The light quark mass corresponds to a pion mass o 317(2) MeV with a lattice spacing o a = (77) m. The presented results are obtained rom a subset o N con = 367 conigurations available on this lattice. The (I)J PC = (1)1 elaic ππ scattering phase shit is shown in Fig. 3. By itting a Breit- Wigner orm to the phase shit we obtain the ollowing parameters or the ρ resonance, which is present in this channel: tanδ 1 ( s ππ ) = sππ Γ( s ππ ) m 2, Γ( s ππ ) = g2 ρππ k 3 (4.1) ρ s ππ 6π s ππ m ρ = 798.2(5.3) MeV g ρππ = 6.46(53) (4.2) 4

It exhibits an enhancement or s ππ in the vicinity o the ρ resonance. The ππ πγ ininite volume amplitude is shown in Fig. 4. It exhibits the basic expected eatures, including an ampliication near s ππ m ρ. Our results are comparable with the results in a previous udy by the Hadron Spectrum collaboration [10, 11]. The adapted method or conructing correlation unctions is computationally eicient on large volumes and produces good quality o data. 5.
