Two-Baryon Systems with Twisted Boundary Conditions arxiv: v1 [hep-lat] 7 Nov 2014 Center for Theoretical Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA 0219, USA davoudi@mit.edu I derive most general quantization condition for energy eigenvalues of two interacting baryons in a finite cubic volume when arbitrary twisted boundary conditions are imposed on ir finitevolume wavefunctions. These quantization conditions are used, along with experimentally known scattering parameters of two-nucleon systems in coupled S 1 D 1 channels, to demonstrate expected effect of a selection of twisted boundary conditions on spectrum of deuteron. It is shown that an order of magnitude reduction in finite-volume corrections to deuteron binding energy arise in moderate volumes with a proper choice of boundary conditions on proton and neutron, or by averaging result of periodic and anti-periodic boundary conditions. These observations mean that a sub-percent accuracy can be achieved in determination of deuteron binding energy at (spatial) volumes as small as (9 [fm]) in upcoming lattice QCD calculations of this nucleus with physical light-quark masses. The results reviewed in this talk are presented in details in Ref. [1]. The 2nd International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory 2-28 June, 2014 Columbia University New York, NY Speaker. 2 1. Introduction With aid of algorithmic and computational advances, lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) studies of properties of light nuclei and hyper nuclei have become reality in recent years (albeit still with unphysical quark masses) [2,, 4]. These are starting to pave road towards truly ab initio calculations in nuclear physics which ultimately aim to reduce systematic uncertainties associated with several crucial nuclear observables [5]. LQCD calculations mselves suffer from systematic uncertainties. These are however fully quantifiable, and can be reduced by an increase in computational resources and/or with help of ongoing formal developments [6]. Among se systematics are those arising from finite extents of space-time in se calculations. 1 The finitevolume (FV) corrections to mass of single hadrons are fully governed by finite-range of hadronic interactions, and are known to be exponential in spatial extent of volume, L, and mass of pion, m π, scaling as e m πl /L at leading order (LO) [7]. For two-hadron bound states, due to introduction of a new scale in system, i.e., binding momentum of bound states, κ, furr volume dependences arise in calculated energies, which at LO scale as e κl /L. For near-threshold bound states such as deuteron, se latter corrections can be rar large even in small to intermediate volumes at physical point corresponding to physical light-quark masses (see Sec. for a quantitative demonstration of this fact in deuteron system). This talk aims to review a recent proposal in Ref. [1] that leads to a considerable reduction of such volume effects with judicious choices of boundary conditions (BCs) in two-hadron systems in a finite cubic volume. Or (closely related) strategies such as introducing multiple center-of-mass (CM) boosts to two-nucleon systems can be found in, e.g., Refs. [8, 9]. The most commonly used lattice geometries are (hyper) cubic and boundary conditions that are generally imposed on gauge and quark fields are periodic (anti-periodic for quark fields in temporal direction). These BCs can be simply generalized to twisted BCs (TBCs) by allowing quark fields to acquire a non-unity phase at boundaries, ψ(x + nl) = e iθ n ψ(x), characterized by a twist angle 0 < θ i < 2π in i th Cartesian direction, with n being an integer triplet. This allows (free) single-hadron momentum modes to take non-integer values, p = 2π L + φ L where φ is corresponding twist angle of hadron due to TBCs imposed on its (valence) quark-level interpolator. These BCs were first introduced in (S-wave) two-nucleon systems in Ref. [10] as a knob to shift location of FV energy levels 2 and refore provide furr kinematic inputs to a modified Lüsher-type quantization condition (QC) [11, 12] that gives access scattering amplitudes. It was shortly realized that such BCs can as well be used in LQCD calculations of transition matrix elements to resolve threshold region without requiring large lattice volumes, e.g., [1, 14]. In this review I focus on one aspect of se BCs, namely ir role in improving volume dependence of binding energies in two-hadron systems with an emphasis on deuteron. I devote Sec. 2 of this review to sketch a derivation of most general FV QC for twobaryon systems with arbitrary TBCs as we first presented in Ref. [1]. This QC is used in Sec. to investigate volume effects on deuteron binding energy at physical point, and has enabled 1 We take temporal extent of volume to be infinite in this study. In reality finite-time (i.e. rmal) effects due to backward propagating states must be taken into account, and be quantified, in any LQCD calculation. 2 The effectiveness of this method in two-hadron systems with identical hadrons, or with equal twist angles imposed on each hadron, is lost as discussed in this review. This point must be be kept in mind when consulting Ref. [10]. 2
us to identify twist angles, or combinations reof, that give rise to significant cancellations of volume effects. I conclude by several comments in Sec Finite-volume Quantization Condition The most general QC for two spin- 1 2 baryons can be obtained from that of two nucleons as derived in Ref. [15], upon accounting for relativistic kinematics that will be considered here, as well as modifications due to use of TBCs. These only alter on-shell kinematics of system, and refore modify allowed non-interacting momentum modes in volume. 4 In order to identify se modes, let us consider two-hadron wavefunction in lab frame ψ Lab [17, 8]. This wavefunction is subject to TBCs, ψ Lab (x 1 + Ln 1,x 2 + Ln 2 ) = e iφ 1 n 1 +iφ 2 n 2 ψ Lab (x 1,x 2 ), (2.1) where x 1 and x 2 denote position of two hadrons, φ 1 and φ 2 are ir respective twist angles, and n 1,n 2 Z. Denoting total (conserved) momentum of system by P = (E,P) in lab frame, equal-time wavefunction of system is ψ Lab (x 1,x 2 ) = e iex 0 +ip X ϕ Lab (0,x 1 x 2 ), (2.2) ( ) where X is position of CM, X = αx 1 + (1 α)x 2 with α = m2 1 m2 2 for particles of E 2 masses m 1 and m 2 [8], and where total CM entergy of systemm is E = E 2 P 2. Since CM wavefunction is independent of relative time coordinate [17], one has ϕ Lab (0,x 1 x 2 ) = ϕ CM ( ˆγ(x 1 x 2 )), where boosted vectors are defined as ˆγx = γx + x with γ = E/E. x (x ) is component of x that is parallel (perpendicular) to P. By writing Eq. (2.1) in terms of ϕ CM it follows that e iαp (n 1 n 2 )L+iP n 2 L ϕ CM (y + ˆγ(n 1 n 2 )L) = e iφ 1 n 1 +iφ 2 n 2 ϕ CM (y ), (2.) where y = x 1 x 2 is relative coordinate of two hadrons in CM frame. Now one can take Fourier transform of this relation to arrive at system s allowed relative momenta, r = 1 [2π(n L ˆγ 1 αd) (α 1 2 )(φ 1 + φ 2 ) + 1 ] 2 (φ 1 φ 2 ), (2.4) where we have used P = 2π L d + φ 1 +φ 2 L with d Z. The sum over momentum modes in QC is a sum over integer vectors n Z in Eq. (2.4). This QC can be written in general as a determinant condition det [ (M (p )) 1 + δg V (p ) ] = 0, (2.5) The case of two spin-0 particles as well as a spin-0 and a spin- 1 2 particle can be obtained from result presented in this section by inputting corresponding values of spin in Eq. (2.6). For two hadrons with arbitrary spin most general QC is presented in Ref. [16]. 4 In deriving this QC, exponential corrections of form e m π L that are arising from finite range of hadronic interactions are neglected.
where M is infinite-volume scattering amplitude and δg V is a FV matrix whose elements in total angular momentum basis can be written as [ [ δg V ] JM J = iη p,ls;j M J S 8πE δ SS δ JJ δ MJ M J δ LL + i (4π) l,m p l+1 cd,φ 1,φ 2 (p 2 ;L) ] M L,M L,M S JM J LM L,SM S L M L,SM S J M J dω YLM L YY L M L. (2.6) p is momentum of each particle in CM frame. η = 1/2 for identical particles and η = 1 orwise. JM J LM L,SM S are Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, where J is total angular momentum, M J is eigenvalue of Jˆ z operator, and L and S are orbital angular momentum and total spin of system, respectively. The volume dependence and dependence on BCs show up in kinematic functions c d,φ 1,φ 2 (p 2 ;L), defined as c d,φ 1,φ 2 (p 2 ;L) = 4π γl ( ) 2π l 2 Z d,φ 1,φ 2 [1;(p L/2π) 2 ], (2.7) L with Z d,φ 1,φ 2 [s;x 2 r ] = l Y (r) r (r 2 x 2 ) s, (2.8) where we already have determined momentum modes r to be used in FV sums in Eq. (2.4). This completes derivation of QC in Eq. (2.5). The QCs corresponding to PBCs [17, 8] can be straightforwardly obtained from Eqs. (2.5) and (2.6) by setting φ 1 = φ 2 = 0. Our result also recovers two limiting cases that are considered in Ref. [18] for use of TBCs in scalar sector of QCD. As is clear from Eq. (2.4), for particles of equal mass (e.g., np system in isospin limit), imposing same TBCs on particles (e.g., corresponding to imposing same twist on u and d quarks in np system) will eliminate dependence of CM energy on twist angles. This means that one can not shift location of CM energy levels by changing twist angle.. Deuteron Spectra and Volume-effects Improvement The volume-dependence of binding energies can be obtained from QC derived in Sec. 2 by performing an analytic continuation in momentum, p = iκ, where κ denotes binding momentum of a bound state with binding energy B (in non-relativistic limit, B = (E m 1 m 2 ) κ 2 /2µ where µ denotes reduced mass of system). To quantitatively illustrate effect of BCs on energies, we focus on deuteron, lightest nucleus at physical point with a binding energy of B d = (4) MeV. Due to negligible scattering in higher partial waves at low energies, infinite-dimensional QC in Eq. (2) can be truncated to a finite space where only contributions from scattering channels with L 2 are taken into account. This QC will be used in upcoming studies of two-nucleon systems with TBCs to constrain scattering parameters in se channels, including S D mixing parameter. However, here we take fits to experimentally known phase shifts and mixing parameters when extrapolated to negative 4
8 Bd [MeV] (requiring J ) because of size of low-energy phase energies to in turn predict spectrum trary twist angles, [9] truncated QC can beexpected represented byinaa finite volume with a selection of TBCs. (.1) The volume dependence of deuteron binding energy originates from right-hand side of this equation. For twist angles φ p = φ n φ = ( π 2, π 2, π 2 ), first few terms in summation on right-hand side of Eq. (.1) (n 2 ) vanish, leaving leading volume corrections to scale as e 2κL /L. A lesser cancellation occurs in average of energies obtained with PBCs and APBCs, giving rise to deviations from infinite-volume energy by terms that scale as e 2κL /L. 4. Furr Discussions We conclude by making two comments concerning generality and practicality of use of TBCs in LQCD calculations of two-hadron systems. Firstly, given that energy eigenvalues in a finite volume are related to scattering amplitudes, in most applications sizable volume corrections are desirable as y give access to (Minkowski) scattering amplitudes that are orwise not accessible through (infinite-volume) Euclidean Green s functions [11]. Once scattering amplitudes are constrained, binding energies can be obtained as poles in se amplitudes. Such extraction may however require a parametrization of energy dependence of amplitudes (e.g., an effective-range expansion below t-channel cut). Then exponential volume-improvement approach already provides an accurate determination of infinite-volume binding energies in a single volume. Furr information regarding scattering parameters can be gained by analyzing volume effects through Lüscher methodology if desired. Performing calculations with different TBCs is advantageous again as it leads to furr constraints on scattering parameters by giving access to extra kinematic points in a finite volume. It will only be justified, in terms of associated cost, to perform calculations with multiple TBCs if generations of new configurations of gauge fields are not required for any set of TBCs. 6
As is pointed out in Ref. [19], imposing TBCs only on valence quarks (partial twisting) is equivalent to full twisting in two-nucleon systems up to exponential corrections in volume that have already been neglected in our formalism. This is due to absence of those s-channel diagrams in nucleon-nucleon interactions that involve intermediate hadrons containing a sea quark. In scalar sector of QCD same conclusion has been drawn by authors of Ref. [18]. Although in this sector such naively-harmful s-channel diagrams may exist, it can be shown that due to graded symmetry of partially-quenched QCD, same QCs arise as if full twisting were implemented, up to exponential corrections in volume. These observations ensure that one can enjoy advantages of TBCs as discussed in this review and elsewhere in studies of twohadron interactions with a computational cost that is comparable to, e.g., boosting method.
