3 Nursing Math Basics Review Metric Measurements This table lists ten metric prefixes. The most common prefixes in nursing are marked:. Every metric measure has a standard abbreviation. NOTE: There are upper and lowercase letters in metric abbreviations. Abbreviations are incorrect when the case is incorrect, e.g. ml not ml. LPN Math Basics Review v-1
4 Metric Conversions Converting from one unit to another: Remember
5 Other Measurements Household Abbreviations and Apothecary Measures Milliequivalent A milliequivalent (meq) is an expression of the number of grams of a drug contained in one (1) milliliter (ml) of normal solution. A milliequivalent dosage is written using Arabic numerals, with a space between the abbreviations that follow for example: 30 meq. Percentage Percentage (%) means parts per hundred. Percentages are written with no space between the quantity and symbol: 30% not 30 %. Percentage is used extensively in intravenous solutions. The greater the solution s percentage, the stronger the solution is. International Units A unit measures a drug in terms of its action, rather than its physical weight. There is no abbreviation for unit; it is written in lower case with a space between the numerals and the measurement, e.g. 30 units.
