1 Name: Block: Date: / / IP 614 Momentum Conservation Lab-Collision A note from your teacher: This is an online interactive lab and I expect you to work hard during class to (1) make predictions, (2) confirm your predictions with the online simulation / stationed lab, and (3) correct any mistakes or confirm your work to master the central concept of momentum conservation. You (as an individual) need to ask questions if you are struggling AND be responsible for mastering the material. You (as a lab partner) need to make sure each person is learning the material and participating equally! If you need more time, finish the rest of the lab for homework. Objectives: By the end of the lab, you should be able to Perform calculation relating to an object s momentum, velocity, and mass using appropriate units. Using the concept of a system, solve problems involving collisions and explosions of isolated systems using momentum conservation. Scenario 1 (collide and stick) If the mass of the red ball is 2 kg and moving with an initial velocity of 4 m/s collided with another object with the same mass that is moving at -3 m/s and stick together. What is the final velocity of the combined masses after the collision? 1. Search google for PheT Collision Lab Run the scenario on the phet Collision Lab 2.0 simulation, make sure on the green box you Turn the elasticity to 0% Click on momentum vectors Click off velocity vectors 3. Make sure you click on More Data and setup the initial values as shown. 4. (Optional: You can grab and drag the boxes out of the way, or move the balls around.) 5. Click Play to run the simulation and answer the following question. You MAY go back and reset the simulations and try it a few times to make sure you understand what s going on. Check the data table for confirmation. 6. Confirmation: How was your prediction of the final velocity? Correct them here if you need to:
