1 Book Lists Harry Potter and the Sorcerer s Stone by J.K. Rowling Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility. But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry and anyone who reads about him will find unforgettable. For it s there that he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic in everything from classes to meals, but a great destiny that s been waiting for him if Harry can survive the encounter. Discussion Topics Why do you think the Sorting Hat wanted to put Harry in Slytherin? Who do you think gave Harry the Invisibility Cloak and why? Discuss the Dursley family. Why were they so mean to Harry? Jealousy? Fear? Anger? The Mirror of Erised reflects what its onlooker s heart desires. What do you think you would see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised? Why? This book has many heroic moments with many different heroes. Discuss some of those moments and what made the hero a hero. Discuss the various magical and mythical creatures in the book. Activities King s Crossword Puzzle Get ready to start your first year at Hogwarts. Wizard Search Take a close look and find the missing witch or wizard. Game Time Rumble Jumble Solve jumbled words, extra letters, and a mystery question to find the answer. Decorating Tips Put up posters to look like each house banner. Place the names of the houses in a hat and ask each member to choose one as they arrive. Have each member wear their house name on a pin or sticker, or seat members near their house banner. Snack Ideas Use an orange-colored drink and label it Pumpkin Juice. Get a bag of multiflavored jelly beans and put them in a bowl labeled Bertie s Every Flavor Beans. Sugar cookies with orange frosting could serve as pumpkin pasties.
