Research & Development begins in Murray Hill, New Jersey as part of Airco for applications that would utilize the growing supply of liquid helium s As of Optimized VACRYFLUX-wire types are sold in increasing quantities for the MRI system market. VAC manufactures 20 tons of Nb-Ti wire to build the Euratom coil. One of 6 D-shaped coils used at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (TN, USA) to build the Tokamak fusion experiment LCT (Large Coil Task) s As of 1970 VACRYFLUX conductor development for NMR applications, e.g.: thin filaments, twisting, CuNi matrix switch wires as well as the introduction of the first bronze route wires for NMR applications s 1984 First wire-in-channel conductor for MRI is produced in Carteret NJ. This conductor type gains strong acceptance and grows to become the highest volume share of the wire used in MRI s globally. 5
6 1987 After discovery of high temperature superconductivity, the development and manufacturing of high-temperature superconductor wires and tapes based on YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 -x, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 +x and Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10 +x starts in Hanau s km of high-purity aluminum molded flat cable, consisting of 38 wire strands of an Nb-Ti wire with 1.30 mm diameter, is produced for the ATLAS detector at the LHC (CERN) OST conductor used in Oxford Instruments industry leading 900 MHz NMR magnet s 2002 OST introduces its Restacked Rod- Restack Process (RRP ) Nb 3 Sn conductor to help achieve the highest performance NMR magnets RRP used to achieve two magnet field records: 16T in an Nb 3 Sn dipole and 25T in an HTS insert. Morgan Crucible plc. owner of Vacuumschmelze since 1999 sells the superconductor wire business to Bruker BioSpin. The new company was named European Advanced Superconductors (EAS). Bruker acquires the YBCO activities of the Zentrum für Funktionswerkstoffe (ZFW) of the University of Göttingen and renames this activity to European High Temperature Superconductors (EHTS). RRP enables first 950 MHz (22.3T) NMR magnet by Oxford Instruments. EHTS manufactures a first 40m long YBCOcoated conductor tape with an Ic of 235 A/cm width. 6
7 2008 European Advanced Superconductors is renamed as Bruker EAS, EHTS is renamed as Bruker HTS and the Bruker business unit Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies (BEST), Inc., headquartered in Billerica, USA is established, covering the fields of activity of Bruker EAS, Bruker HTS, Bruker ASC, RI Research Instruments and Bruker Hydrostatic Extrusions Bruker EAS relocates in its 50th year of superconductor wire manufacturing to its new manufacturing facility in Hanau Fusion for Energy (F4E) - the European domestic agency for ITER awarded Bruker EAS a contract for the supply of 37 tons of chrome plated bronze route Nb 3 Sn wire.
