New properties of a certai method of summatio of geeralized hypergeometric series Rafał Nowak Paweł Woźy August 30, 2016 arxiv: v3 [math.na] 5 Sep 2016 Abstract I a recet paper Appl. Math. Comput. 215, , 2009, the authors proposed a method of summatio of some slowly coverget series. The purpose of this ote is to give more theoretical aalysis for this trasformatio, icludig the covergece acceleratio theorem i the case of summatio of geeralized hypergeometric series. Some ew theoretical results ad illustrative umerical examples are give. 1 Itroductio The geeralized hypergeometric series p F q α 1,..., α p ; β 1,..., β q x is defied by pf q α1, α 2,..., α p β 1, β 2,..., β q x := =0 α 1 α 2 α p x β 1 β 2 β q! for the give o-egative iteger umbers p ad q, complex parameters α 1, α 2,..., α p, β 1, β 2,..., β q ad x see, e.g., [3, 2.1], where z 0 := 1, z := zz + 1z + 2 z is the Pochhammer symbol. Usig series 1.1, oe ca represet most of elemetary ad special fuctios, as well as costats that arise i mathematics ad physics see, e.g., [19]. Hece, this class of series has may applicatios i the approximatio theory ad umerical aalysis. Evaluatig a geeralized hypergeometric series of the form 1.1 ca be a very challegig umerical problem. First, its covergece or divergece depeds maily o the values of the umbers p ad q. Secod, the variety of the parameters α, β, x leads to differet types of the covergece or divergece of the series. It is worth metioig that the sequece trasformatios may be very useful umerical tools for the summatio of the series give by 1.1. I the most recet editio of the book Numerical Recipes by Press et al., some classic sequece trasformatios are described ivolvig summatio of coverget or diverget series; see [21, 5.3]. Probably the best kow class of sequece trasformatios are Padé approximats which deal with partial sums of the power series ad trasform them to a double idexed sequece of ratioal approximats. For further iformatio o Padé approximats, we refer to the books by Baker [4] or by Baker ad Graves-Morris [5]. 1.1 Istitute of Computer Sciece, Uiversity of Wrocław, Polad, rafal.owak@cs.ui.wroc.pl, correspodig author Istitute of Computer Sciece, Uiversity of Wrocław, Polad, Pawel.Wozy@ii.ui.wroc.pl Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 1
As a alterative to the theory of Padé approximats, oe ca use the sequece trasformatios, for which the fudametals were give by Wimp [31], ad the extrapolatio methods described by Beziski ad Redivo Zaglia i [7] or Sidi [24]. Most of the classic algorithms were also well summarized by Weiger i the report [28] ad Homeier i [11]. Udoubtedly these sequece trasformatios have may commo properties with Padé approximats, but i the case of geeralized hypergeometric series they ca be much more powerful tools. It is worth metioig that evaluatio of special fuctios with the help of covergece acceleratio techiques is also cosidered i the book by Olver et al. [19, 3.9]. I geeral, the success of covergece acceleratio of the series =0 a very ofte depeds o the behavior of the sequece of its partial sums s := 1 a ad remaiders r := a +. Supposig s s, oe has s = s + r. We say that {s } coverges liearly, if lim s +1 s/s s =: ς ad 0 < ς < 1. I the case of ς = 1, we have logarithmic covergece, which is usually the most difficult to accelerate. If p q = 1 the the series 1.1 may be extremely slowly coverget ad practically uusable. Therefore, the methods of covergece acceleratio of such series are particularly importat. For istace, i order to use ay of so-called Levi-type sequece trasformatios, oe should first provide good estimates ω of the remaiders r ; see, e.g., [11]. This ca be achieved with the help of recet results give by Willis i [30]. Namely, he aalyzed the followig asymptotic relatio for the remaiders of the series 1.1 with p q = 1: s s = r µx λ c k k. 1.2 He derived the recurrece relatio for the coefficiets c k, which gives the ability to approximate the remaiders r up to the desired order. Willis combied this asymptotic property with a classic techique of extrapolatio ad obtaied a umerical algorithm of computig 2-dimesioal array cotaiig approximatios of the limit of the series. Namely, the trucated estimate is such that ω m := x λ s = s + µ ω m c k k, m Æ, + O x λ m ad thus the ew approximatio defied by the weighted average s m := ωm +1 s ω m s +1 ω m +1 ωm is a better approximatio of the partial sum s i the sese that the sequece s m coverges to the limit s faster tha the sequece of partial sums s. It is worth remarkig that Willis method is very efficiet at the brach poit x = 1. However, it does ot seem to provide good umerical properties, if x 1. I this paper, we cotiue the aalysis of Q trasformatio, itroduced by us i [33], applied to the summatio of geeralized hypergeometric series 1.1 with p q = 1. Followig the otatio give i [33], we cosider the series =0 a with a := α 1 α 2 α p β 1 β 2 β p x x, 1.3 covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 2/14
where α := α 1, α 2,..., α p, β := β 1, β 2,..., β p are vectors of complex parameters. Notice that the series 1.3 correspods to the followig geeralized hypergeometric series p+1f p α1, α 2,..., α p, 1 β 1, β 2,..., β p which is the case of the series 1.1 with p q = 1. Let us remark that Q trasformatio ca be applied to the series 1.1 also i the case with oe of the upper parameters beig equal to 1, sice oe ca always use the followig obvious relatio rf s α1, α 2,..., α r β 1, β 2,..., β s x x = r+1 F s+1 α1, α 2,..., α r, 1 β 1, β 2,..., β s, 1 The mai purpose of this paper is to give more theoretical properties of the Q trasformatio. For a detailed compariso with other methods of covergece acceleratio, we refer to [33] ad [32], where the buch of umerical examples ivolvig may classic ad recet sequece trasformatios, such as Aitke s iterated 2 process [2], Wy s ε-algorithm [34], t ad u variats of Levi [13] ad Weiger [29] trasformatios, Homeier s trasformatios [10], method proposed by Lewaowicz ad Paszkowski [14], method proposed by Čížek et al. [8] ad the method of Paszkowski [20], were give; see also the Breziski s review of covergece acceleratio techiques [6]. The covergece of the series 1.3 depeds o the variety of parameters α, β ad the complex umber x. If x < 1, the the series coverges absolutely. O the uit circle, the covergece is more subtle ad depeds o the real part of the parameter σ := 1 + p i=1 α i p i=1 β i. Namely, the series 1.3 coverges at x = 1, if Rσ < 0, as well as for x = 1 x 1, if Rσ < 1. May other mathematical properties of the geeralized hypergeometric series p+1 F p ca be foud i such classic sources as [1], [3], [15] or [25]. It is also worth metioig the recet research of Miller ad Paris [16, 17, 18], Rathie ad Paris [22] ad Kim et al. [12], where certai trasformatios were proposed to simplify the so-called order of geeralized hypergeometric series. Several refiemets of such a class of series ca be also foud i the very recet work of Wag [27]. I [33], the authors itroduced the techique of summatio of some slowly coverget series, which appeared to be very efficiet also i the case of the geeralized hypergeometric series. The proposed Q m trasformatio is defied by a certai liear differece operator L m i the followig way: Q m := Lm L m, s, m Æ Here, ad i the sequel, every differece operator acts upo ad ot upo m. The meaig of the liear operator L m is that it aihilates a fiite part of the remaider r. More precisely, it is required that L m a + a a +m 1 = I a geeral case, for arbitrary sequece a, the computatio of the quatities Q m is rather complicated ad the umerical versio of the algorithm is recommeded; see [32]. However, i the case of the series 1.3, oe ca compute the quatities Q m i a very efficiet way, i.e., usig the algorithm ivolvig certai recurrece formulas for umerators ad deomiators i 1.4; cf. [33, Alg. 1, Thm. 2]. x. covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 3/14
For coveiece of referece, we briefly summarize the mai results from [33] i the case of the series 1.3. For a give vector γ = γ 1, γ 2,..., γ p, we use the followig shorthad otatio ad write a = α / β x. The operators L m L m p γ := γ, Æ {0}, 1.6 =1 = mp β +m 1 α x satisfyig 1.5 ca be writte i the form I, m Æ; 1.7 see [33, Eq. 3.4]. Here, the forward differece operator ad the idetity operator I are defied accordig to z := z +1 z ad I z := z, respectively; higher powers of the operator are defied recursively, i.e., 0 z := z ad m z := m 1 z, m Æ. From a computatioal poit of view, it is worth otig that operators L m L m = P m P 1 P m := P m 1 P 1, where the operators P m ca be writte also i the factored form are defied by := β p x I, 1.8a α p mp p β + + mp p, m b =1 Thus, the quatities Q m ca be computed usig the followig recursive scheme see [33, Alg. 1]: N 0 := s, D 0 := 1, 1.9a N m Q m := P m = N m D m N m 1, D m From eqs. 1.8 ad 1.9, oe may coclude that := P m Dm 1, m 1, 1.9b. 1.9c Q m = Q m s, s +1,..., s +lm, 1.10 where lm = mp, which meas that Q m trasforms the sequece {s } =0 to the sequece {Q m } =0 whose -th elemet depeds o s, s +1,..., s +mp. Let us remark that Levi-type sequece trasformatios produce the double idexed quatities L m := L m {ω }, s, s +1,..., s +lm, depedig both o the partial sums ad o the sequece of remaider estimates {ω } see, e.g., [11], with such relatioships as lm = m, lm = m + 1, lm = 2m or lm = 3m; see, e.g., [28, 2.7]. For example, the classic variats of Levi trasformatio have lm = m ad ivolve the followig choices of remaider estimates: ω = a, ω = a +1, ω = + 1a or ω = aa +1 a a +1 ; see the paper of Levi [13] ad work of Smith ad Ford [26]. The advatage of Q m trasformatio is that the iformatio about remaider estimates ω is a priori hidde i the aalytic form of the operators P m, give by the explicit formulas 1.8. It should be remarked that the operators 1.8 seem to provide the trasformatio Q m which is a very covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 4/14
powerful umerical tool for the summatio of the geeralized hypergeometric series 1.1 with p q = 1. Some theoretical properties of Q m trasformatio were also give i [33]. I the case of the series 1.3, we ca summarize them as follows. If p = 1, the Q m trasformatio is equivalet to Wy s ε algorithm [34] i the sese that Q m = ε 2m, which follows from the geeral property give i [33, 2.3]. It is worth metioig that the explicit formula for ε 2m i the case of 2F 1 α, 1; β x has already bee give by Sidi i [23, Ex. 2] see also [24, 17.3]. The metioed relatio betwee Q m ad ε trasformatios does ot hold for p > 1. Supposig that the series 1.3 is coverget, we also kow that Q m trasformatio is regular for all m Æ, if x 1, i.e., lim Qm s = p+1 F p α1, α 2,..., α p, 1 β 1, β 2,..., β p see [33, Thm. 5]. What is more, it possesses the followig asymptotic behavior: α1, α 2,..., α p, 1 p+1f p x Q m s = O x +mp+1, x 0; β 1, β 2,..., β p see [33, Thm. 6]. Moreover, a lot of umerical tests show that the sequece Q m ot oly coverges to the limit of the series but also coverges much faster for bigger ad bigger values of m. The paper is orgaized as follows. I Sectio 2, we give some ew properties of Q m trasformatio i the case of the series 1.3 icludig the mai result, which is the covergece acceleratio theorem. Later, i Sectio 3, we give some umerical examples ad, i Sectio 4, discuss further problems cocerig theoretical properties of Q m trasformatio. 2 Mai result Let us cosider the trasformatio Q m, defied i 1.4, i the case of the series 1.3. Followig [33], we defie the fuctios λ m λ m, p, x, α, β by λ m := α [ ] +mp x+mp mp β ++m 1 1 mp β +m 1 α + x +, = 0, 1,..., mp, ad thus, usig 1.7, we ca write the trasformatio Q m as follows: Sice λ m = mp Q m = Lm s L m 1 = x mp p i=1 mp mp λ m s + λ m x ;. 2.1 [α i + + mp β i + + m 1 ] 2.2 see [33, Eq. 3.11], the quatity Q m is a liear combiatio of the quatities s, s +1,..., s +mp with coefficiets λ m beig polyomials of degree mp 2 i. I the lemma below, covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 5/14
we express the elemet Q m i terms of s ad a, a +1,..., a +mp 1. I the sequel, we use the followig polyomials i : M m M m 0, M m k := mp =k λ m, k = 0, 1,..., mp. 2.3 Lemma 2.1. The quatity Q m ca be writte as the followig liear combiatio ivolvig the partial sum s ad the terms a, a +1,..., a +mp 1 : Proof. First, let us observe that Q m mp 1 Q m M m k+1 = s + M m a +k, m, Æ. 2.4 = mp λm s + /M m. Secod, we have Q m = mp λ m s + a + a a + 1 = mp M m λ m s + mp 1 mp =k+1 M m λ m a +k mp 1 M m k+1 = s + M m a +k. Now, we are goig to give some theoretical results about the covergece acceleratio performed by Q trasformatio. The first theorem gives the ecessary ad sufficiet coditio for the covergece acceleratio. Next, we show that this coditio holds uder a certai assumptio which is discussed later i Subsectio 2.1. The statemet cocerig the covergece acceleratio of the liearly coverget series 1.3 is give thereafter. We also aalyze the covergece at the poits x = ±1. Theorem 2.2. Cosider the series 1.3 with partials sums s covergig to s. The trasformatio Q m accelerates the covergece of {s }, i.e., lim Q m s s s = 0, m Æ, 2.5 if ad oly if where M k ad M are defied by 2.3. mp 1 M m k+1 lim M m a+k = 1, 2.6 r Proof. The theorem follows immediately from Lemma 2.1, sice Q m s lim = 1 lim 1 mp 1 M m k+1 s s r M m a +k. covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 6/14
I the ext theorem, we show that the coditio 2.6 is fulfilled for a certai class of coverget hypergeometric series 1.3. Let us remark that the further properties hold upo the followig assumptio. Assumptio 2.3. We assume that the remaiders of the series 1.3 satisfy r +1 lim = x. r Theorem 2.4. If Assumptio 2.3 holds ad x 1, the the coditio 2.6 is satisfied for all m Æ, ad thus the trasformatio Q m accelerates the covergece of {s }. Proof. Let c m be the coefficiet for the term mp2 i λ m, i.e., c m mp := x mp, = 0, 1,..., mp; cf Usig biomial theorem, oe ca check that the followig two relatioships hold: mp c m = 1 x mp, mp c m x = Therefore, if x 1, the polyomial M m, give by 2.3, is exactly of degree mp 2. This yields M m k+1 lim mp M m = / c m mp c m mp = 1 x mp c m. =k+1 =k+1 Usig the fact that a +k = r +k r +k+1 ad Assumptio 2.3, we obtai mp 1 M m k+1 lim M m a+k r Now, the result follows from Some commets mp 1 = 1 x mp mp =k+1 c m x k x k+1 = 1 x mp mp c m mp c m x. Let us ote that Assumptio 2.3 holds for each series 1.3 with x < 1, which implies the liear covergece. It follows directly from [31, Thm. 1, p. 6] providig that a +1 x = lim a r +1 = lim, r if x < 1. This yields the theoretical explaatio of covergece acceleratio performed by Q m trasformatio i the case of liearly coverget series 1.3. Assumptio 2.3 is also satisfied if x = 1 ad all the terms a are real ad have the same sig; see [9, Thm. 2, p. 26]. I this case, the series 1.3 coverges logarithmically. It is quite remarkable that the trasformatio Q m seems to be very efficiet also i such a case. However, we caot use Theorem 2.4 for x = 1 i order to ustify that Q m trasformatio leads to a acceleratio of the covergece. covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 7/14
Let us remark that Assumptio 2.3 holds also for a certai class of the series 1.3 with x = 1. Namely, from [9, Thm. 3, p. 26], we obtai that it is satisfied, if α / β decreases mootoically to zero ad 1 + t +1 lim = 1, t where t := a +1 /a. I the ext sectio, we give some commets ad umerical examples showig the cosequeces of the give theorems. 3 Experimets Sice the mai purpose of this paper is to give the theoretical properties of the Q m trasformatio, we refer to [33] ad [32], for the umerical examples displayig, amog other thigs, the detailed compariso with may classic methods of covergece acceleratio. However, we would like to give some ew examples i order to depict the coclusios of the theory give i Sectio 2. We use Q m trasformatio i order to approximate the sum of the geeralized hypergeometric series 3 F 2 α 1, α 2, 1; β 1, β 2 x. Let us remark that oe ca compute the array of quatities Q m equivalet oes: P m usig the recurrece formulas 1.9 ad replacig the operators P m := x 2 + 2m + α m + α I with the 2x + 2m + α m + α 2 1[ + 2m + β m + β 2 2 m 2 + m]e + + m + β m + β m + β m + β 2 2 E cf. [33, Eq. 3.8], where the forward shift operators E ad E 2 are defied accordig to E z := z +1, ad E 2 z := z +2. I all the examples, we start with the colum Q 0 cotaiig some fiite umber of partial sums of the series. Next, we use recurrece formulas 1.9 ad obtai the triagular array of the quatities Q m. I the first example, we cosider the alteratig series 1.3 with x = 1. I this case, oe ca use Theorem 2.4 i order to explai the covergece acceleratio performed by the Q trasformatio. Ideed, we obtai highly accurate approximatios i the triagular array Q m. I the secod example, we cosider the liearly coverget series 1.3. I order to obtai a very slow covergece, we take x 1. Agai, as a cosequece of Theorem 2.4, the trasformatio Q provides a quite good approximatio of the limit of the series. I the last example, we cosider the series 1.3 with x = 1, which meas the logarithmic covergece. Oe ca observe that the Q trasformatio is very efficiet, although this good performace caot be ustified by Theorem 2.4. All the umerical experimets were made i Maple TM 14 system, usig floatig poit arithmetic with 32 decimal digits precisio. Cosequetly, as i [33], we measure the accuracy of the approximatio z of the sum s 0 by the umber of exact sigificat decimal digits, i the followig sese: z accz := log 10 s 1. covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 8/14
Example 3.1. Let us cosider the followig expasio of the itegral ivolvig the square root fuctio: 1 z y z α α dy = 2 F, z α α > 0, 0 < z α Sice the first parameter of the hypergeometric series is ot equal to 1, we cosider the covergece acceleratio of the series 3 F 2 1/α, 1/2, 1; 1 + 1/α, 1 z α. We put α = 1/3 ad z = 1. Thus, we obtai a alteratig series of the form 1.3 with a = ! x, x = 1, 3.3 covergig to / The covergece is quite slow sice straightforward computatio gives uderlie depicts the correct digits: s 10 = , s 100 = , s 1000 = , s = This yields the followig umber of exact sigificat decimal digits of the limit of the series: accs 10 = 3.0, accs 100 = 5.5, accs 1000 = 8.0, accs = Oe ca check that t := a +1 /a = [ ]/[ ], ad thus the equatio 2.8 holds. Sice the fractio i 3.3 decreases mootoically to zero, we coclude that Assumptio 2.3 is satisfied; cf. [9, Thm. 3, p. 26]. From Theorem 2.4, we obtai that Q m trasformatio accelerates the covergece of the cosidered series. Ideed, the accuracy of the quatities Q m icreases for bigger ad bigger values of m; see Table 1. It is worth otig that the quatity Q 7 1 gives about 21 digits of accuracy, while the partial sums s 1, s 2,..., s 15, that it depeds o see Lemma 2.1, give less tha 4 digits. Table 1: Values of accq m for the hypergeometric series 3.2 with α = 1/3 ad z = 1. m covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 9/14
Example 3.2. Let us cosider the liearly coverget series 2F 1 1 6, see [35]. The straightforward computatio yields 1 6 = 3 F, 1 3, , 1 = ; 27 4 s 10 = , s 100 = , s 200 = This meas the followig accuracies: accs 10 = 1.5, accs 100 = 5.3, accs 200 = 8.9. However, usig oly partial sums s 1, s 2,..., s 25, oe ca compute the triagular array of the elemets Q m for 1 + 2m 25, 0 m 12. For istace, we have Q 10 1 = , Q 11 1 = , Q 12 1 = , which yields the followig accuracies: accq 10 1 = 7.0, accq 11 1 = 7.9, accq 12 1 = 8.7. The followig is worth remarkig: 1 for the fixed subscript, the quatities Q m for cosecutive values of m are of better ad better accuracy amely, every ext elemet has, more or less, oe exact decimal digit more; 2 sice Assumptio 2.3 is satisfied, this is i agreemet with Theorem 2.4, providig that lim Q m s s s = 0, which meas that each colum of the array Q m coverges to s faster tha the sequece of partial sums s ; 3 the accuracy of the quatities Q m shows the faster ad faster covergece for cosecutive colums of the table. Example 3.3. Let us cosider the complex vectors of parameters: α = i, i, β = i, i. The hypergeometric series 3F 2 α 1, α 2, 1; β 1, β i is extremely slowly coverget. Ideed, the partial sums s for = 10 3, 10 5, 10 6 give accuracy of about 2.3, 2.9 ad 3.2 exact sigificat decimal digits, respectively. I cotrast, usig oly partial sums s 1, s 2,..., s 15, the trasformatio Q gives the quatities Q m beig very good approximatios of the limit; see Table 2. The reaso for this is that the sufficiet coditio i Theorem 2.2 is arguably satisfied. Ideed, the straightforward computatio yields that umerical values of mp 1 M m k+1 M m a+k r approach 1.0 whe. Moreover, these values are closer ad closer to 1.0 for bigger ad bigger values of m. We believe this explais the covergece acceleratio performed by Q trasformatio; cf. Table 2. covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 10/14
Table 2: Values of accq m for the hypergeometric series i Example Further problems m Let us remark that the statemet i Theorem 2.4 does ot cosider the case of x = 1 i the series 1.3. This case leads to the logarithmic covergece which is usually the most difficult to sum. Although we caot use Theorem 2.4 i order to prove the covergece acceleratio for the Q trasformatio, oe ca always try to check if coditio 2.6 is satisfied. This is exactly what was depicted i Example 3.3. We strogly believe that the coditio 2.6 is fulfilled for all the classes of logarithmically coverget series satisfyig Assumptio 2.3. However, we do ot kow how to prove it i a geeral way. Let us remark that i this case, the polyomials M m, give by 2.3, are o loger of the degree mp 2 ; cf Therefore, the proof of Theorem 2.4 eeds to be differet i such a case. However, oe ca try to check if the coditio 2.6 is satisfied, provided that the terms ad remaiders of the series 1.3 have, at least formally, the followig asymptotic represetatio: a +1 a 1 + b 1 + b , r +1 r 1 + d 1 + d Hece, oe ca check that p p b 1 = α β, b 2 = 1 p p b 2 1 α 2 + β 2, 2 =1 =1 =1 =1 Thus, usig the fact that d 1 = b 1 + 1, d 2 = b b 1b 2 + b 1 + b 2 /b 1. a +k r = r +1 r r +2 r +1 oe ca obtai, after some algebra, that 1 r mp 1 r +k r +k 1 1 r +k+1 r +k, M m k+1 M m a +k 1 + π π covacc2.tex Rev. 2355, August 30, 2016, 13:00:23Z 11/14
This compared with coditio 2.6 i Theorem 2.4 explais the acceleratio of the covergece obtaied i Example 3.3. But still the statemet i Theorem 2.2 is a ope problem i the case of a geeral form of the series 1.3 with x = 1. Maybe eve more iterestig is to explai why we observe that the quatities Q m give better ad better approximatio of the limit of the series, for bigger ad bigger values of m; cf. Tables 1 ad 2. We believe that the mai reaso is the relatioship 1.5 satisfied by the operators L m defiig Q m trasformatio. However, the proof of Q m+1 s lim Q m = 0, m Æ, s seems to be very difficult ot oly i the case of logarithmic covergece, but also for a liearly coverget series 1.3. We leave it for the further research.
