JIMENEZ PAIZ Abstract. Let ω be an L 1 -integrable function on [, 1] and let us denote I ω(f) = f(x)ω(x)dx, where f is any bounded integrable function with respect to the weight function ω. We consider rational interpolatory quadrature formulas (RIQFs) where all the poles are preassigned and the interpolation is carried out along a table of points contained in C \ [, 1]. The main purpose of this paper is the study of the convergence of the RIQFs to I ω(f). Key words. weight functions, interpolatory quadrature formulas, orthogonal polynomials, multipoint Padé type approximants. AMS subject classifications. 41A21, 42C05, 30E Introduction. This work is mainly concerned with the estimation of the integral (1.1) I ω (f) = f(x)ω(x)dx, where ω(x) is an L 1 integrable function (possibly complex) on [, 1] and f is a bounded complex valued function. The existence of the integral I ω (f) should be understood in the sense that the real and imaginary parts of f(x)ω(x) are Riemann integrable functions on [, 1], either properly or improperly. We propose approximations of the form (1.2) I n (f) = A j,n f(x j,n ) which we will refer to as an n point quadrature formula with coefficients or weights {A j,n } and nodes {x j,n }. As it is well known, the key question in this context is how to choose the nodes and weights so that I n (f) turns out to be a good estimation of I ω (f). Classical theory is based on the fact of the density of the space Π of all polynomials in the class C([, 1]) of the continuous functions. Assuming that the integrals c k = x k ω(x)dx, k =0, 1,..., exist and are easily computable, when replacing f(x) in (1.1) by a certain polynomial P (x), I ω (P ) will provide us with an approximation for I ω (f). Concerning the choice of the polynomial P (x), many techniques have been developed in the last decades making use of interpolating polynomials. More precisely, given n-distinct Received November 1, Accepted for publicaton December 1, Recommended by F. Marcellán. 2 40 Quadrature formulas for rational functions nodes {x j,n } on [, 1],letP n (f; x) denote the interpolating polynomial of degree at most n 1 to the function f at these nodes, i.e., (1.3) P n (f; x) = l j,n (x)f(x j,n ) (Lagrange Formula) where l j,n Π n (space of polynomials of degree at most n 1), satisfies { 1 if j = k l j,n (x k,n )=δ j,k = 0 if j k. We see that I ω (P n (f,.)) provides us with a quadrature formula of the form (1.2) with A j,n = I ω (l j,n ),, 2,..., n. I n (f) is called an n-point interpolatory quadrature formula and clearly integrates exactly any polynomial P in Π n, i.e., (1.4) I ω (P )=I n (P ), P Π n. An important aspect in this framework is the problem of the convergence. That is, how to choose the nodes {x j,n } n, n =1, 2,... so that the resulting interpolatory quadrature formula sequence {I n (f)} converges to I ω (f), with f belonging to a class of functions as large as possible. Many contributions have been given in the last two decades. For the sake of completeness we shall state a result by Sloan and Smith (see [12]), culminating a series of previous works of these authors (see e.g. [13] and [14]). THEOREM 1.1. Let β(x) be a real and L 1 -integrable function on [, 1] and ω(x) be a weight function on [, 1] (ω(x) 0) such that β(x) 2 dx < +. ω(x) Let {x j,n },, 2,...,n, n N be the zeros of the n th -monic orthogonal polynomial with respect to ω(x) on [, 1], and I n (f) = A j,n f(x j,n ), the n-point interpolatory quadrature formula at the nodes {x j,n }.Then lim I n(f) =I β (f), for all real-valued bounded function f(x) on [, 1] such that the integral I β (f) = f(x)β(x)dx exists. In this work, we propose to make use of quadrature formula (1.2), integrating exactly rational functions with prescribed poles outside [, 1]. Observe that polynomials can be considered as rational functions with all the poles at infinity. The main aim will be to prove a similar result to Theorem 1.1 for rational interpolatory quadratures formulas (RIQFs), where orthogonal polynomials with respect to a varying
F. Cala Rodriguez, P. Gonzalez Vera, and M. Jimenez Paiz 41 weight function will play a fundamental role. In this respect this work can be considered as a continuation of the paper by González-Vera, et al.(see [8]), where the convergence of this type of quadrature exactly integrating rational functions with prescribed poles, was proved for the class of continuous functions satisfying a certain Lipschitz condition, and it can be also considered as a continuation of the paper written by Cala Rodríguez and López Lagomasino (see [3]) where they proved convergence (exact rate of convergence) of this type of interpolating quadrature formulas approximating Markov-type analytic functions. The common contribution in those papers ([3] and [8]) was to display the connection between Multipoint Padé type Approximants and Interpolating Quadrature Formulas. Here, we start from a purely numerical integration point of view and, as an immediate consequence of this approach, a known result about uniform convergence for Multipoint Padé type Approximants will be easily deduced. 2. Preliminary results. Let ˆα = {α j,n : j =1, 2,..., n, n =1, 2,...} be compactly contained in C \ [, 1], i.e., such that (2.1) d(ˆα;[, 1]) = min dist[α j,n ;[, +1]] = δ>0. In the sequel, we shall refer to this property as the δ-condition for ˆα. Set π n (x) = n (x α j,n ). In what follows, we need to introduce the following spaces of rational functions. For each n N, define { } { } P (x) P (x) L 2n = π n (x) 2 : P Π 2n and R n = π n (x) : P Π n Let ω(x) be a given weight function on [, 1] and consider the function (2.2) ω n (x) = ω(x) 0, x [, 1]. π n (x) 2 Let Q n (x) be the n th -orthogonal polynomial with respect to ω n (x) on [, 1] and let {x j,n } n be the n zeros of Q n (x). Then, positive numbers λ 1,n, λ 2,n,..., λ n,n exist such that (2.3) f(x)ω n (x)dx = λ j,n f(x j,n ), f Π 2n Take R L 2n.ThenR(x) = R(x)ω(x)dx = P (x) π n (x) 2 P Π 2n and one has P (x)ω n (x)dx = λ j,n P (x j,n )= λ j,n R(x j,n )=Ĩn(R), where λ j,n = λ j,n π n (x j,n ) 2 > 0. Thus, an n-point quadrature formula, with positive coefficients or weights, which is exact in L 2n, has been defined. We will refer to it as the n-point Gauss formula for L 2n. Now, we give the following result of uniform boundness for the coefficients of this quadrature formulas.
42 Quadrature formulas for rational functions LEMMA 2.1. Under the conditions above, a positive constant M exists such that λ j,n M, n 1. REMARK 1. In case that ˆα is a Newtonian table, i.e., ˆα = {α j,n = α j,k, 1 j k, k =1,...,n, and n Z + } contained in C \ [, 1], condition (2.1) can be omitted in order to prove Lemma 2.1. Proceeding as in [10, Theorem 1, p. 101], and making use of Theorem 1.1 in [7], we can now give a characterization theorem for these quadrature formulas. THEOREM 2.2. A quadrature formula of the type Ĩ n (f) = λ j,n f(x j,n ) is exact in L 2n, if and only if, (i) I n (f) is exact in R n, and (ii) for each n N, {x j,n } n are the zeros of the nth -orthogonal polynomial Q n (x) with respect to function ω n (x) given by (2.2). These Gauss formulas can be obtained in the same way as Markov s for the polynomial case (see e.g. [11] and references found therein), integrating the rational interpolation function R 2n L 2n, which is the solution of the Hermite interpolation problem: R 2n (f; x j,n ) = f(x j,n ) R 2n(f; x j,n ) = f (x j,n ) } j =1, 2,..., n where {x j,n } n are n distinct nodes in [, 1] and f is a differentiable function on [, 1]. Following this procedure, error formulas can be derived by integrating the interpolation error (see [11] and [7]). Assuming that ˆα satisfies the δ condition, the class of rational functions R = n N R n is dense in C[, 1] ([8, Theorem 4]. Thus, a theorem on convergence of Gauss quadrature formulas in L 2n can be proved in an analogous way to the polynomial case. We give only a sketch of its proof. THEOREM 2.3. The sequence {Ĩn(f)} of Gauss quadrature formulas for L 2n, n = 1, 2,..., converges to I ω (f) = f(x)ω(x)dx, for any bounded Riemann integrable function on [, 1]. Proof. Takef C([, 1]). Now, since a positive constant K exists such that λ j,n = λ j,n K, and by the density of the class R in C([, 1]), it follows that lim I n(f) =I ω (f).
F. Cala Rodriguez, P. Gonzalez Vera, and M. Jimenez Paiz 43 Convergence in the class of the bounded Riemann integrable functions is a consequence of the fact that λ j,n > 0, j =1, 2,...,n, n N ([6, pp ]). We state two lemmas that will be useful in the next section. The former can be found in [15, Theorem 1.5.4]. LEMMA 2.4. Let ω be a weight function on [, 1] with ω(x)dx < +, and let f be a real-valued and bounded function on [, 1] such that the Riemann integral f(x)ω(x)dx exists. Then, for any ε>0, there exist polynomials p and P such that [P (x) p(x)]ω(x)dx < ε, and M ε p(x) f(x) P (x) M + ε, x [, 1] with } M =max{ inf f(x) x [,1], sup f(x). x [,1] We will state a similar result for rational functions. Let ˆα = n N ˆα n C \ [, 1], with ˆα n = {α j,n C \ [, 1],, 2,...,n}, satisfy the δ condition (2.1) and furthermore, assume that for each n N, there exists m = m(n), with 1 m n, such that α m,n ˆα n satisfies R(α m,n ) > 1. LEMMA 2.5. Let ω be a given weight function on [, 1] with ω(x)dx < +, and let f be a complex bounded function on [, 1] such that the integral f(x)ω(x)dx exists. Then, for any ε>0, there exists R Rsatisfying and f(x) R(x) ω(x)dx < ε, f(x) R(x) 2(M + ε), where M is a positive constant depending on f. Proof. We can write f(x) =f 1 (x)+if 2 (x) where f j (j =1, 2) are bounded real valued functions on [, 1] such that f j(x)ω(x)dx exists for j =1, 2. By using Lemma 2.4, polynomials p 1,p 2,P 1 and P 2 exist such that for j =1, 2 and any ε > 0,wehave (2.4) M j ε p j (x) f j (x) P j (x) M j + ε, x [, 1],
44 Quadrature formulas for rational functions with M j =max{ inf f j(x) x [,1], sup x [,1] } f j (x), and (2.5) [P j (x) p j (x)]ω(x)dx < ε. The functions F (x) = p 1 (x) +ip 2 (x) and G(x) = P 1 (x) +ip 2 (x) are continuous and complex valued on [, 1]. So, by the δ-condition, there exist sequences {r n } and {R n } in R such that (2.6) lim r n(x) =F (x) and lim R n(x) =G(x), uniformly on [, 1]. Take real and imaginary parts and set r n (x) =r n,1 (x)+ir n,2 (x) and R n (x) =R n,1 (x)+ ir n,2 (x). From (2.6) it clearly follows that lim r n,1(x) =p 1 (x), lim r n,2(x) =p 2 (x), lim R n,1(x) =P 1 (x), lim R n,2(x) =P 2 (x), uniformly on [-1,1]. Therefore, for ε > 0, there exists n 0 N such that n >n 0 } r n,1 (x) ε < p 1 (x) <r n,1 (x)+ε (2.7) R n,1 (x) ε < P 1 (x) <R n,1 (x)+ε x [, 1]. Without loss of generality we can assume that α m = a + ib with a< and b>0 (α m such that R(α m ) > 1). Let ᾱ m denotes the complex conjugate of α m. On the other hand, the function (x α m ) is obviously in R. Write 1 x α m = where x a>0 (since a<). Set γ 1 = x ᾱ m x α m 2 = x a x α m 2 + i b x α m 2 := h 1(x)+ih 2 (x), min {h 1(x)} > 0, and γ 2 = max {h 1(x)} > 0. x [,1] x [,1] Take ε = εγ 1 with ε >0 arbitrary. Then, by (2.7), for all x [, 1], (2.8) r n,1 (x) εh 1 (x) <p 1 (x) <r n,1 (x)+ εh 1 (x) and (2.9) R n,1 (x) εh 1 (x) <P 1 (x) <R n,1 (x)+ εh 1 (x). Define now S 1 (x) =r n,1 (x) εh 1 (x), R 1 (x) =R n,1 (x)+ εh 1 (x), x [, 1]. Then, by (2.4), (2.8) and (2.9), we have S 1 (x) f 1 (x) R 1 (x), x [, 1]. On the other hand, by (2.7), S 1 (x) =r n,1 (x) εh 1 (x) >p 1 (x) ε εh 1 (x) p 1 (x) ε εγ 2,
F. Cala Rodriguez, P. Gonzalez Vera, and M. Jimenez Paiz 45 (recall that γ 2 =max x [,1] {h 1 (x)} > 0). Now, by (2.4), S 1 (x) M 1 ε ε εγ 2 (ε = γ 1 ε). Then, By (2.4) and (2.7), S 1 (x) M 1 ε (γ 1 + γ 2 ) ε. R 1 (x) <P 1 (x)+ε + εh 1 (x) <M 1 + ε + ε + εγ 2 = M 1 + ε +(γ 1 + γ 2 ) ε. In short, the functions S 1 (x) and R 1 (x) defined above satisfy (2.10) M 1 ε (γ 1 + γ 2 ) ε S 1 (x) f 1 (x) R 1 (x) <M 1 + ε +(γ 1 + γ 2 ) ε. Similarly, considering h 2 (x), it can be deduced for the function f 2 (x) that (2.11) M 2 ε (δ 1 + δ 2 ) ε S 2 (x) f 2 (x) R 2 (x) <M 2 + ε +(δ 1 + δ 2 ) ε, where Define S 2 (x) =r n,2 (x) εh 2 (x), δ 1 =min x [,1] {h 2 (x)} > 0, R 2 (x) =R n,2 (x)+ εh 2 (x), δ 2 =max x [,1] {h 2 (x)} > 0. Similarly S(x) =S 1 (x)+is 2 (x) =[r n,1 (x) εh 1 (x)] + i[r n,2 (x) εh 2 (x)] ε = r n (x) ε[h 1 (x)+ih 2 (x)] = r n (x) R. x α m R(x) =R 1 (x)+ir 2 (x) =[R n,1 (x)+ εh 1 (x)] + i[r n,2 (x)+ εh 2 (x)] ε = R n (x)+ ε[h 1 (x)+ih 2 (x)] = R n (x)+ R. x α m Now, by (2.10) and (2.11), it follows (2.12) f(x) R(x) f 1 (x) R 1 (x) + f 2 (x) R 2 (x) =(R 1 (x) f 1 (x)) + (R 2 (x) f 2 (x)) < 2[M 1 + ε +(γ 1 + γ 2 ) ε]+2[m 2 + ε +(δ 1 + δ 2 ) ε]. On the other hand, by the uniform convergence, we have, for j =1, 2 lim lim r n,j (x)ω(x)dx = R n,j (x)ω(x)dx = p j (x)ω(x)dx, P j (x)ω(x)dx. and Recalling the notation I ω (f) = f(x)ω(x)dx, forε > 0, there exists n 1 N, such that for any n>n 1, ε + I ω (p 1 ) <I ω (r n,1 ) <ε + I ω (p 1 ) ε + I ω (P 1 ) <I ω (R n,1 )<ε + I ω (P 1 ).
46 Quadrature formulas for rational functions We have now and I ω (R 1 S 1 )=I ω (R n,1 + εh 1 r n,1 + εh 1 )=I ω (R n,1 ) I ω (r n,1 )+2 εi ω (h 1 ), I ω (h 1 )= h 1 (x)ω(x)dx γ 2 c 0, with c 0 = ω(x)dx, which can be taken as 1. Thus, from (2.5), I ω (R 1 S 1 ) <I ω (P 1 ) I ω (p 1 )+2(ε + γ 2 ε) <ε +2(ε + γ 2 ε). Similarly, it can be deduced that This yields (2.13) f(x) R(x) ω(x)dx I ω (R 2 S 2 ) <ε +2(ε + δ 2 ε). = f 1 (x) R 1 (x) ω(x)dx + (R 1 (x) f 1 (x))ω(x)dx + I ω (R 1 S 1 )+I ω (R 2 S 2 ) < 2ε +2[ε +(γ 2 + δ 2 ) ε]. Taking M = M 1 + M 2, from (2.12) and (2.13), the proof follows. f 2 (x) R 2 (x) ω(x)dx (R 2 (x) f 2 (x))ω(x)dx 3. Convergence of interpolatory quadrature formulas. In this section we will be concerned with the estimation of the integral I β (f) = f(x)β(x)dx, where β(x) is an L 1 -integrable function (possibly complex) in [, 1],i.e. β(x) dx < +. For given n distinct nodes x 1,n,x 2,n,x 3,n,...,x n,n in [, 1], thereexistn coefficients A 1,n,A 2,n,...,A n,n such that I β (f) = A j,n f(x j,n ):=I n (f), f R n. Let R n (f,x) be the unique interpolant to f in R n, R n (f,x j,n )=f(x j,n ), j =1, 2,...,n, n N. Setting π k (x) = k (x α j,k), k=1, 2,..., and since {π k }n k=1 is a Chebyshev system in (, 1), existence and uniqueness of such interpolant is guaranteed (see e.g. [5, p. 32]).
F. Cala Rodriguez, P. Gonzalez Vera, and M. Jimenez Paiz 47 Then, as in the polynomial case (α j,n =, j =1, 2,...,n), it is easily proved (see [10, p. 80]), that I n (f) = A j,n f(x j,n )=I β (R n (f, )). Hence, we will sometimes refer to I n (f) as an n-point interpolatory quadrature formula for R n. Let ω(x) be a given weight function on [, 1], (i.e., ω(x) > 0, a.e. on [, 1]), satisfying β(x) 2 ω(x) dx = K2 1 < +. We can establish the following THEOREM 3.1. Let f be a bounded function in L 2,ω = {f :[, 1] C : f(x) 2 ω(x)dx < }. Then, I β (f) I n (f) K 1. f R n 2,ω, where f 2,ω denotes the weighted L 2 -norm, i.e., [ ] 1 f 2,ω = f(x) 2 2 ω(x)dx. Proof. Making use of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, we have I β (f) I n (f) = I β (f) I β (R n (f,.)) = (f(x) R n (f,x))β(x)dx = (f(x) R n (f,x)) ω(x) β(x) dx ω(x) ( ) 1 ( (f(x) R n (f,x)) β(x) 2 ) 1 2 ω(x)dx ω(x) dx K 1 f R n (f,.) 2,ω. Thus, we see that the L 2,ω convergence of the interpolants at the nodes of the quadrature implies convergence of the sequence of quadrature formulas. Now, the questions are: How to find nodes {x j,n } in [, 1] such that lim f R n(f,.) 2,ω =0, and in which class of functions (as large as possible) does it hold? As a first answer, we have THEOREM 3.2. Let f be a complex continuous function on [, 1] and ω(x) > 0 a.e. on [, 1]. Let{x j,n } n, n =1, 2,...,denote the zeros of Q n(x), then th monic orthogonal polynomial with respect to ω(x) π n (x) 2
48 Quadrature formulas for rational functions on [, 1]. Then, lim f R n(f, ) 2,ω =0. Proof. LetT n (x) R n denote the best minimax rational approximant to f(x), i.e., ρ n (f) := f T n [,1] = Then, we have max f(x) T n(x) f R [,1], R R n. x [,1] f R n (f, ) 2,ω = f T n + T n R n (f, ) 2,ω f T n 2,ω + T n R n (f, ) 2,ω { } 1 = f(x) T n (x) 2 2 ω(x)dx { } 1 + T n (x) R n (f,x) 2 2 ω(x)dx. But T n (x) R n (f,x) 2 L 2n,sincexis real. Then, f R n (f, ) 2,ω ρ n (f). c 0 + λ j,n T n (x j,n ) R n (f,x j,n ) 2 1 ρ n (f). 2 c 0 + ρ n (f) λ j,n, with c 0 = ω(x)dx, thatis, (3.1) f R n (f,.) 2,ω ρ n (f) c0 + By Lemma 2.1, there exists a constant M such that Since, (see [8]) λ j,n M, n 1. λ j,n 1 2 lim ρ n(f) =0, from (3.1) the proof of the theorem follows. We have immediately the following COROLLARY 3.3. Let β be an L 1 -integrable complex function on [, 1] such that β(x) 2 dx < +. ω(x). 1 2
F. Cala Rodriguez, P. Gonzalez Vera, and M. Jimenez Paiz 49 Let I n (f) = n A j,nf(x j,n ) be the n-point interpolatory quadrature formula in R n with nodes {x j,n } n at the zeros of Q n,then th monic orthogonal polynomial with respect to Then ω n (x) = ω(x), x [, 1]. π n (x) 2 lim I n(f) =I β (f), for any complex function f continuouson [, 1] Now, making use of Banach-Steinhaus Theorem (see e.g. [10, p. 264]), we have, COROLLARY 3.4. Under the same conditions as in Corollary 3.3, there exists a positive constant M such that A j,n M, n =1, 2,... EXAMPLE 1. (Multipoint Padé-type Approximants) For z C \ [, 1], consider the function f(x, z) =(z x) (in the variable x, and z as a parameter), so that We have I β (f(,z)) = I n (f(,z)) = β(x) z x dx = F β(z). A j,n = P n(z) z x j,n Q n (z), with Q n (z) = n (z x j,n) and P n (z) Π n. In order to characterize such rational functions, it should be recalled that I n (f) =I β (R n (f, )), R n (f, ) being the interpolant in R n at the nodes {x j,n } n to f(x). Write R n (z,x) =R n ((z x),x). We have that R n (z,x) = 1 [ 1 Q ] n(x) π n (z), z x Q n (z) π n (x) which can be easily checked that belongs to R n, and since Q n (x j,n )=0,then R n (z,x j,n )= 1 z x j,n, j =1, 2,...,n. Thus (3.2) P n (z) Q n (z) [ ( 1 = I β 1 Q )] n(x)π n (z) z x Q n (z)π n (x) [ ] Q n (x)π n (z) = F β (z) I β (z x)q n (z)π n (x)
50 Quadrature formulas for rational functions Hence, (3.3) F β (z) P n(z) Q n (z) [ ] Q n (x)π n (z) = I β (z x)q n (z)π n (x) = π n(z) Q n (z) Q n (x) π n (x) β(x) z x dx. We see that the rational function Pn(z) Q n(z) (with a prescribed denominator) interpolates F β (z) at the nodes {α j,n } n. Following [3], we will refer to this rational function as a Multipoint Padé-type Approximant (MPTA) to F β (z). REMARK 2. The same expression as in (3.3) for the error was also obtained in [8], which is basically inspired from [16, p. 186]. By using Corollary 3.4 and the Stieltjes-Vitali Theorem (see e.g. [9, Theorem ]), the following can be proved: COROLLARY 3.5. The sequence of MPTA { Pn (z) Q n (z) }, n N defined in (3.2), converges to F β (z), uniformly on compact subsets of C \ [, 1]. Now, we are in a position to prove the following THEOREM 3.6. Let L f n (x) denote the interpolant in R n to the function f(x) at the nodes {x j,n } n which are the zeros of the nth orthogonal polynomial with respect to ω n (x) on [, 1]. Then, lim Lf n f 2 2,ω = lim L f n (x) f(x) 2 ω(x)dx =0, for any complex-valued and bounded function on [, 1], such that the integral f(x)ω(x)dx, exists. Proof. Wehave Hence (3.4) L f n f 2 2,ω = L f n (x) f(x) 2 ω(x)dx = f 2 2,ω + Lf n 2 2,ω 2 R(L f n (x)f(x))ω(x)dx. L f n f 2 2,ω f 2 2,ω + L f n 2 2,ω +2I ω ( L f n f ). Now, L f n R n implies that L f n 2 L 2n = { P (x) π n(x) 2,P Π 2n }, when restricted to the real line. So, L f n 2 2,ω = I ω( L f n 2 )= Setting f(x) =f 1 (x)+if 2 (x), wehave L f n 2 2,ω = λ j,n L f n (x j,n) 2 = λ j,n f(x j,n ) 2. λ j,n [f1 2 (x j,n )+f2 2 (x j,n )].

Jimenez Paiz 51 Thus lim Lf n 2 2,ω = lim = = λ j,n f1 2 (x j,n) + lim = f 2 2,ω. f 2 1 (x)ω(x)dx + f(x) 2 ω(x)dx λ j,n f2 2 (x j,n) f 2 2 (x)ω(x)dx On the other hand, by the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, } 2 ( ) 2 {I ω ( f L f n ) = f(x) L f n (x) ω(x)dx ( )( ) f(x) 2 ω(x)dx L f n (x) 2 ω(x)dx = f 2 2,ω Lf n 2 2,ω. Therefore, lim sup I ω ( f L f n ) f 2 2,ω, and by (3.4) it follows that (3.5) lim sup I ω ( f L f n 2 ) 4 f 2 2,ω. Now, given ε>0, by Lemma 2.5, there exists R R, such that and f(x) R(x) 2(M + ε), x [, 1], Hence, (3.6) f(x) R(x) ω(x)dx < ε. f R 2 2,ω = f(x) R(x) 2 ω(x)dx = 2(M + ε) f(x) R(x) f(x) R(x) ω(x)dx f(x) R(x) ω(x)dx < 2ε(M + ε). For sufficiently large n,wehavel R n = R, and we get f L f n = f R + R Lf n = f R (L f n LR n )=f R Lf R n. Hence, f Lf n 2 2,ω = (f R) Lf R n 2 2,ω and by ( ), it holds that (3.7) lim sup f L f n 2 2,ω = lim sup (f R) L f R n 2 2,ω 4 f R 2 2,ω 8(M + ε)ε. Clearly, from (3.7) the proof follows.
52 Quadrature formulas for rational functions REMARK 3. The theorem above can be considered as an extension to the rational case of the famous Erdös-Turán result for polynomial interpolation (see [4, pp ]). Actually, an earlier rational extension was carried out by Walter Van Assche et al. in [2], under the restriction that the points α j,n are real, distinct and ˆα is a Newtonian table, and only considering continuous functions on [, 1]. Finally, making use of Theorem 3.1 and Theorem 3.6, we can state the main result we referred to in the beginning, (compare with Theorem 1.1). THEOREM 3.7. Let β be an L 1 -integrable function on [, 1] and ω(x) > 0, a.e. on [, 1] be such that β(x) 2 dx < +. ω(x) Let I n (f) = n A j,nf(x j,n ) be the n-point interpolatory quadrature formula in R n, whose nodes {x j,n } n, are the zeros of Q n(x), then th monic orthogonal polynomial with respect to ω(x) π n(x), x [, 1]. Assume that the table ˆα satisfies the same conditions as those 2 in Lemma 2.5. Then, lim I n(f) =I β (f) = f(x)β(x)dx, for all bounded complex valued function f on [, 1] such that the integral f(x)β(x)dx exists. Acknowledgments.
