Three-layer quantum Kolkata restaurant roblem under decoherence M. Ramzan Deartment of Physics Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad 4, Pakistan (Dated: Setember 11, 17) arxiv: v [quant-h] 17 Nov 11 Effect of quantum decoherence in a three-layer quantum Kolkata restaurant roblem is investigated using triartite entangled qutrit states. Amlitude daming, deolarizing, hase daming, trit-hase fli and hase fli channels are considered to analyze the behaviour of layers ayoffs. It is seen that Alice s ayoff is heavily influenced by the amlitude daming channel as comared to the deolarizing and fliing channels. However, for higher level of decoherence, Alice s ayoff is strongly affected by deolarizing noise. Whereas the behaviour of hase daming channel is symmetrical around % decoherence. It is also seen that for maximum decoherence ( = 1), the influence of amlitude daming channel dominates over deolarizing and fliing channels. Whereas, hase daming channel has no effect on the Alice s ayoff. Therefore, the roblem becomes noiseless one at maximum decoherence in case of hase daming channel. Furthermore, the Nash equilibrium of the roblem does not change under decoherence. Keywords: Decoherence; qutrit channels; Kolkata restaurant roblem. I. INTRODUCTION Game theory a branch of alied mathematics, was initially develoed for use in economics by von Neumann and Morgenstern [1] and imortant contributions were given by John Nash []. It attemts to cature mathematical behavior in strategic situations, in which an individual s success of making a choice deends on the choice of the other layers. It is usually used to model the behavior of biological, economical and comuter systems. During last few years, a number of classical games has been converted into the realm of quantum mechanics [-18]. Recently, Miszczak et al. [19] has studied a qubit fli game on a Heisenberg sin chain. They have shown that being
well aware of the dimensionality of the system, a layer can achieve a mean ayoff equal to almost 1. More recently, Sharif et al. [] has roosed the quantum solution to a three-layer Kolkata Restaurant roblem. The Kolkata Paise Restaurant (KPR) [1] is a reeated game similar to the Minority games, layed between a large number of agents having no interaction among themselves. Since quantum minority games [-] has attracted much attention in recent years. They have also been analyzed under the influence of decoherence by Flitney and Hollenberg [6]. It is therefore, imortant to study the behaviour of quantum restaurant roblem in the resence of environmental influences. Since, it is not ossible to comletely isolate a quantum system from its environment. Therefore, it is imortant to study the system-environment dynamics in the resence of environmental effects. Quantum games may rovide a feasible latform for imlementing quantum information rocessing in hysical systems [7] and can be used to robe the influence of decoherence in such systems [6, 8-1]. In this connection, quantum channels rovide a natural theoretical framework for the study of decoherence in noisy quantum communication systems. Quantum error correction [-] and entanglement urifications [4] can be emloyed to avoid the roblem of decoherence. In this aer, the effect of quantum decoherence in a three-layer quantum Kolkata restaurant roblem is studied using entangled qutrit states. By considering different noisy qutrit channels arameterized by decoherence arameter such that [,1]. The lower and uer limits of decoherence arameter reresent the fully coherent and fully decohered system, resectively. It is seen that for lower level of decoherence, amlitude daming channel heavily influences the ayoffs as comared to the deolarizing and fliing channels. However, for higher level of decoherence, the ayoff is strongly affected by deolarizing noise. On the other hand, the behaviour of hase daming channel is symmetrical around % decoherence. Furthermore, the Nash equilibrium of the roblem does not change under decoherence. II. DECOHERENCE AND QUANTUM KOLKATA RESTAURANT PROBLEM In the Kolkata Paise Restaurant (KPR) roblem, N non-communicating agents have to choose between n choices. The agents receive a gain in their utility if their choice is not too crowded, i.e. the number of agents that made the same choice is under some threshold limit. The choices can also have different values of utility associated with them, accounting for a reference rofile over the set of choices. Therefore, in KPR, N rosective customers choose from N restaurants each evening in a arallel decision mode. Each restaurant have identical rice but different rank k
(agreed by the all the N agents) and can serve only one customer. If more than one agents arrive at any restaurant on any evening, one of them is randomly chosen and is served and the rest do not get dinner that evening. For the sake of simlicity, let the three agents, Alice, Bob and Charlie have three ossible choices: security, security 1 and security. They receive a ayoff $ = 1 if their choice is unique, otherwise they receive $ =. Therefore, the game is a one shoot game, that is, it is a non-iterative, and the agents have no information from revious rounds. Since the agents cannot communicate, therefore, there is nothing left to do other than randomizing between the choices. Randomization gives the agent i an exected ayoff of E c ($) = 4/9, where the suerscrit c reresents the classical strategy. In this roblem, let Alice, Bob and Charlie share a general triartite entangled qutrit state of the form where the arameter f controls the degree of entanglement and ρ in = f Ψ in Ψ in + (1 f) I 7 (1) 7 Ψ in = 1 ( ) () In order to analyze the effect of entanglement, another general initial state is also considered as given below Ψ in = sincos +sinsin 111 +cos () where π and π. If we set = π/4, π/4 and = ±cos 1 (1/ ) in the above equation, the three-qutrit state becomes the maximally entangled state. The strategies of the layers can be defined by the unitary oerator U acting on the initial qutrit state of the roblem given as [] z 1 ω 1 z ω z ω U = z ω z ω 1 z 1 ω z ω z 1 ω z ω 1 (4) where sincose iα 1 z = sinsine iα cose iα ()
4 and cosχcoscose i(β 1 α1) +sinχsine i(β α 1) ω = cosχcossine i(β 1 α) sinχcose i(β α ) cosχsine i(β 1 α ) (6) where χ π/ and β 1,β π. After the action of layers unitary oerators the state of the game transform to ρ f = (U A U B U C )( Ψ in Ψ in )(U A U B U C ) (7) The evolution of the state of a quantum system in a noisy environment can be described by the suer-oerator Φ in the Kraus oerator reresentation as [1] ρ f = Φρ f = k E k ρ f E k (8) where the Kraus oerators E i satisfy the following comleteness relation E k E k = I (9) k We have constructed the Kraus oerators for the game from the single qutrit Kraus oerators (as given in equations (9-11) below) by taking their tensor roduct over all n combination of π(i) indices E k = π e π(i) (1) where n is the number of Kraus oerators for a single qutrit channel. The single qutrit Kraus oerators for the amlitude daming channel are given by [6] 1 E = 1, E 1 =, E = 1 (11) Similarly, the single qutrit Kraus oerators for the hase daming channel are given as [6]
E = , E 1 = ω, (1) 1 ω where ω = e πi. The single qutrit Kraus oerators for the deolarizing channel are given by [7] E = 1 I, E 1 = 8 Y, E = 8 Z, E = 8 Y, E 4 = YZ (1) 8 where E = 8 Y Z, E 6 = 8 YZ, E 7 = 8 Y Z, E 8 = 8 Z (14) 1 1 Y = 1, Z = ω 1 ω (1) The single qutrit Kraus oerators for the hase fli channel are given by 1 E = 1, E 1 =, E = 1 (16) and the single qutrit Kraus oerators for the trit-hase fli channel are given by E = E = 1 1 1, E 1 = 1 e πi e πi, E = 1 e πi 1 e πi, e πi e πi 1 (17) where = 1 e Γt reresents the quantum noise arameter usually termed as decoherence arameter. Here the bounds [,1] of corresond to t =, resectively. The final state of the game
6 after the action of the channel can be written as ρ f = Φ (ρ f ) (18) where Φ α is the suer-oerator realizing the quantum channel arametrized by the real number (decoherence arameter). The ayoff oerator for i th layer (say Alice) can be written as P A = x x x 1 x x x 1,x x x 1 x, x, x 1 = + x x x 1 x x x 1,x = x x 1 x, x, x 1 = (19) The ayoff of i th layer can be calculated as E i ($) = Tr{P A ρ f } () where Tr reresents the trace of the matrix. The otimal strategy for layers is found to be U ot given by U ot (,,χ,α 1,α,α,β 1,β ) = ( π 4,cos 1 (1/ ), π 4, π 18, π 18, π 18, π, 11π 6 ) (1) It is seen that the results are consistent with Ref. [] for =. In order to interret the effect of decoherence on the three-layer quantum Kolkata restaurant roblem, different grahs has been lotted as a function of decoherence arameter. In figure (1), Alice s ayoff is lotted as a function of decoherence arameter for (a) f =., (b) f =., (c) f = 1 and = π 4, = cos 1 (1/ ) for amlitude daming, deolarizing, hase daming, trit-hase fli and hase fli channels, where AD, De, PD, TPF and PF reresent the amlitude daming, deolarizing, hase daming, trit-hase fli and hase fli channels resectively. It is seen that Alice s ayoff is heavily influenced by the amlitude daming channel as comared to the deolarizing and fliing channels. In figures ( and ), Alice s ayoff is lotted as a function of and for =. and =.7 (a) amlitude daming, (b) hase daming, (c) deolarizing and (d) trit-hase fli channels, resectively, for the state of equation (). It is seen that for higher level of decoherence (see figure ), Alice s ayoff is strongly affected by deolarizing noise. Whereas the behaviour of hase daming channel remains symmetrical around % decoherence. In figures (4), Alice s ayoff is lotted as a function of and for = 1 (a) amlitude daming, (b)
7 hase daming, (c) deolarizing and (d) trit-hase fli channels, resectively. It is shown that for maximum decoherence i.e. = 1, amlitude daming channel dominates over the deolarizing and fliing channels having considerable reduction in the ayoff. Whereas, hase daming channel has no effect on the Alice s ayoff. In case of hase daming channel, the roblem becomes noiseless at maximum decoherence. However, maximal entanglement gives the maximum ayoff (6/9 at = ) and it reduces as one changes the degree of entanglement from its maxima or introduces the value of decoherence arameter > 1. Furthermore, the Nash equilibrium of the roblem does not change under decoherence. III. CONCLUSIONS Quantum three-layer Kolkata restaurant roblem is investigated in the resence of decoherence using triartite entangled qutrit states using amlitude daming, deolarizing, hase daming, trithase fli and hase fli channels. It is seen that for lower level of decoherence, amlitude daming channel heavily influences the ayoffs as comared to the deolarizing and fliing channels. However, for higher level of decoherence, the ayoff is strongly affected by deolarizing noise. It is also seen that for maximum level of decoherence, amlitude daming channel dominates over the deolarizing and fliing channels. Whereas, hase daming channel has no effect on the Alice s ayoff at = 1. Therefore, the roblem becomes noiseless at maximum decoherence for hase daming channel only. Furthermore, the Nash equilibrium of the roblem does not change under decoherence.
