1 Young s Natural Representations of S Quinton Westrich arxiv: v1 [math.rt] Dec 011 December 008 Abstract We calculate all inequivalent irreducible representations of S by specifying the matrices for adjacent transpositions and indicating how to obtain general permutations in S from these transpositions. We employ standard Young tableaux methods as found in Sagan s The Symmetric Group: Representations, Combinatorial Algorithms, and Symmetric Functions (001). These representations are irreducible and any other irreducible representation is equivalent to one of Young s natural representations. Moreover, the adjacent transpositions generate all of S so that all the matrices of Young s natural representations are easily obtained by merely multiplying the appropriate generators. There are two key ideas employed in these calculations. The first is that partitions of correspond to irreducible representations of S. Each partition is represented graphically by a Ferrer s diagram. λ 1 (1,1,1,1) λ (,1,1) λ (,) λ (,1) λ 5 () So there are five (inequivalent) irreducible representations of S. The second key idea is that given a partition of, and hence a shape λ, the dimension of representation module corresponding to the shape λ, or the degree of the corresponding representation matrices, is equal to the number of standard fillings of the shape λ, denoted f λ. This number is provided by the hook formula f λ n! (i,j) λ h ij. Throughout this paper, we use the following convention in determining the representation of (ii+1)e t in terms of the basis of standard λ-polytabloids.
