This is achieved via a method initiated by Painlevé with the alication of a test due to Kowalevski and Gambier. The solutions can be obtained exlicitly in terms of Painlevé transcendents or ellitic functions. PACS: 0.0.Qs, Lm 1 Introduction The theory of electrodiffusion has its origin in the liquid-junction theory of Nernst and Planck [1]. It seeks to rovide a macroscoic descrition of the transort of charged articles through material barriers. Alications abound, in articular, in the modelling of biological membranes []-[7] and in electrochemistry [8]. Schlögl [9] observed that it is convenient to artition the ions into m classes characterized by the same electric charge q j = q 0 ν j, where q 0 is the unit of charge and ν j is a nonzero integral signed valency. The m-ion electrodiffusion model in steady régimes then reduces to the following system of m + 1 couled first order ODEs [10]: dn i dx = ν in i c i, ν i n i 0, i = 1,,m, d m dx = (1) ν i n i, where x is the coordinate normal to the lanar boundaries, is the electric field and n j is the number of ions with the same charge q j = q 0 ν j. These variables are subject to the constraint [9] Prerint S007/03. To aear, Journal of Physics A. nlin.si/yymmnnn (ν i ν j )ν i n i 0, i j. () 1
The system (1) admits the first integral K = m Cx n i, (3) where K may be set to zero without loss of generality whenever C = m c i 0. Note that certain boundary value roblems indeed require that K be zero. Here, this constraint is not imosed and it is demonstrated in an algorithmic manner that the electrodiffusion model for m 4 admits solutions given in terms of Painlevé transcendents and ellitic functions. The Painlevé reduction obtained in [11] is retrieved as a articular case. Single-valued solutions. A classical rocedure For nonlinear systems such as (1), deendent on certain arameters ν i, c i, there is a classical method [1] for determining all those arameters for which the general solution of the nonlinear system is single-valued around its movable singularities. An alternative aroach due to Kowalevski [13] and Gambier [14] is also available, and all the details which are sometimes missing in these classical authors can be found in [15] or in summer school lecture notes [16]. The main stes, to be erformed in the sequel, are as follows: 1. A scaled version of the nonlinear system (1) is introduced for new fields N i (X), P(X), via the transformation (this is a articular α-transformation [1]), Thus the limit ε 0 generates x = εx, = ε 1 P, n i = N i. (4) dn i dx = ν in i P, ν i 0, i = 1,,m, m dp dx = ν i N i, 0 = P m N i. This canonical system results from (1) and (3) by setting c i = 0, K = 0 and is termed the simlified system, as oosed to the original comlete system (1). If the comlete system has a single-valued general solution, it is necessary that the simlified system has a single-valued general solution.. Necessary conditions on the arameters ν i for the general solution of the simlified system to be single-valued are determined. These conditions are shown to be sufficient for the roblem at hand. 3. The necessary conditions on the arameters ν i, c i for the general solution of the comlete system to be single-valued are obtained and the corresonding PII and other reductions listed. (5) 3 Constraints on the charges ν i The transformation (4) imlies that P(X) admits movable simle oles, P = χ 1 [P 0 + O(χ)], χ = X X 0, P 0 0. (6) A straightforward integration of (5) 1 reveals the leading order behaviour P = χ 1 [P 0 + O(χ)], N i = χ νip0 [A i + O(χ)], 0 = P 0 χ [1 + O(χ)] m χ νip0 [A i + O(χ)]. (7)
Here, the A i are undetermined constants. Since the ν i are assumed distinct (see ()), the term in χ in (7) 3 can only be matched by exactly one of the terms involving χ νip0. Denoting j this matching index, this yields the desired value of P 0, P 0 =, A j = ν j νj. (8) In view of the ossible vanishing of the remaining constants A i, the necessary condition that each N i (X) be single-valued near X = X 0 is not easy to enforce and hence we roceed directly with the other conditions. An additional necessary condition is that the linearized version of the simlified system near the local behaviour (7) also has the roerty that its general solution is single-valued near X = X 0. Since this linearized system is of Fuchsian tye [17, Cha. XVI] near X = X 0, it is necessary that all its Fuchs indices be integer. This condition is here readily enforced with knowledge of P 0. Thus, let us introduce the function W by P = W ν j W. (9) By construction, W has a simle zero near X = X 0 (it can be chosen such that lim X X0 W/(X X 0 ) = 1). The integration of the simlified system then reduces to the integration of a single ODE for W(X), namely W ν j m k i W νi/νj = 0, (10) where N i = k i W νi/νj, (11) and the k i are arbitrary constants. Since lim X X0 W/(X X 0 ) = 1, Laurent series in X X 0 are also Laurent series in W. The values of the Fuchs indices are directly read from (10), and are given by Fuchs indices = 1, ν i ν j, i = 1,..., m. (1) Finally, since j can be arbitrarily chosen, the diohantine condition to be solved is j i : ν i ν j = integer. (13) The latter condition is restrictive and, using the shorthand notation ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = a : b : c to indicate its only distinct solutions are ν 1 a = ν b = ν 3 = arbitrary, (14) c m = 1 : no restriction, m = : ν 1 : ν = 1 :, 1 : 1, 1 :, m = 3 : ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1, 1 : :, m = 4 : ν 1 : ν : ν 3 : ν 4 = 1 : : 1 :, m > 4 : no solution. The necessary condition (13) is also roven to be sufficient. Thus, in the first order ODE (10) for W(X), all the owers of W are integers between 0 and 4 for the values (15) so that this ODE belongs to the binomial tye studied by Briot and Bouquet [18, ages 58 59] and its general solution W(X) is single-valued. The exlicit exressions for P and N i in terms of W rove the single-valuedness of the general solution of the simlified system (5). This comletes the second ste as set down in Section. Let us remark that the Fuchs indices (1) comrise a subset of {, 1, 1, 3, 4, 6}. (15) 3
4 Constraints on the c i The third ste involves a well known test due to Kowalevski and Gambier. In view of the numerous ossible dominant behaviours (11) of the n i, it roves convenient to eliminate the m variables n i to obtain the m-th order ODE obeyed by the electric field (x). Thus, taking the derivative of (1) m 1 times, one generates a van der Monde system for the m variables n i, namely [10] m ν q i n i = a q, q = 1,,m m (16) a 1 =, a q = a q 1 + ν q 1 k c k, q =,,m. In view of the constraint (), the solution n i of this system is unique. Thus, the question of singlevaluedness of the general solution (n i, ) of the comlete system (1) reduces to that of alone. The m-th order first-degree ODE for (x) is defined by the determinant k= / (Cx + K) ν 1... ν m a ν q 1... νm q = 0. (17) a q ν1 m... νm m a m For the admissible values of m as set down in (15), one obtains [10]: [ ] m = 1 : + ν 1 + Cx + K = 0, [ ] m = : (ν 1 + ν ) 3 + ν 1 ν (Cx + K) + ν 1 c 1 + ν c = 0, m = 3 : (ν 1 + ν + ν 3 ) + (ν ν 3 + ν 3 ν 1 + ν 1 ν ) 3 [ ] + ν 1 ν ν (Cx + K)3 [(ν + ν 3 )ν 1 c 1 + (ν 3 + ν 1 )ν c + (ν 1 + ν )ν 3 c 3 ] (18) (c 1 ν 1 + c ν + c 3 ν 3 ) = 0, m = 4 : with the notation + s 1 ( 3 + ) + s 4 s s 4 7 s 4 (Cx + K) 5 + A A 1 (3 ) + A = 0, s 1 = ν 1 + ν + ν 3 + ν 4, s = ν 1 ν + ν 1 ν 3 + ν 1 ν 4 + ν ν 3 + ν ν 4 + ν 3 ν 4, s 3 = ν ν 3 ν 4 + ν 1 ν 3 ν 4 + ν 1 ν ν 4 + ν 1 ν ν 3, s 4 = ν 1 ν ν 3 ν 4, A 3 = (c + c 3 + c 4 )ν ν 3 ν 4 + (c 1 + c 3 + c 4 )ν 1 ν 3 ν 4 + (c 1 + c + c 4 )ν 1 ν ν 4 + (c 1 + c + c 3 )ν 1 ν ν 3, (19) A = (c 1 + c )ν 1 ν + (c 1 + c 3 )ν 1 ν 3 + (c 1 + c 4 )ν 1 ν 4 + (c + c 3 )ν ν 3 + (c + c 4 )ν ν 4 + (c 3 + c 4 )ν 3 ν 4, A 1 = c 1 ν 1 + c ν + c 3 ν 3 + c 4 ν 4. The next set of necessary conditions arises when one investigates the existence of the m Laurent series 4
(one for each chosen j) whose first term is (see (6)) = + k=0 k (x x 0 ) k 1, 0 = ν j, j = 1,,m. (0) The locations k at which arbitrary constants may aear in the series (0) are identical to the Fuchs indices listed in (1). Whenever k reaches one of the ositive Fuchs indices in the list (1), to eliminate the ossibility of a movable logarithm in the exansion (0) destructive of the Painlevé roerty, conditions must be imosed on the c i, i = 1,,m. The results of this classical comutation are (Aendix): m = 1 : no additional condition, m =, ν 1 : ν = 1 : : c 1 = 0, c = 0, m =, ν 1 : ν = 1 : 1 : no additional condition, m =, ν 1 : ν = 1 : : no additional condition, (1) m = 3, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1 : c 1 = 0, c (c + 3c 3 ) = 0, m = 3, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : : c 1 = 0, c = 0, m = 4, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 : ν 4 = 1 : : 1 : : c 1 = c = c 3 = c 4 = 0. The value K of the first integral is unconstrained. Whenever is a Fuchs index of some family, movable logarithms may occur as well from this index, but the classical comutation recalled in the Aendix cannot detect them. In order to erform this detection, an analysis u to the erturbation order n = 6 has been conducted in the manner described in [19]. All such additional necessary conditions turn out to be identically satisfied. In order to comlete the third ste, it remains to examine whether the general solution (n i, ) of the comlete system is indeed single-valued for the cases set down in (1). It roves convenient to make use of one of the m variables w involved in the singular art transformation (see (9)), = w ν j w, () namely the one where ν j is the greatest of the m charges. To each vanishing c i, if any, there corresonds a first integral k i = n i w νi/νj 0, (3) where the exonent ν i /ν j is an integer. For each air (c i, c k ) with c i = c k = 0 one can eliminate w between the two associated first integrals to obtain a first integral rational in (n i, n k ), namely 5 The m-ion cases: m = 1,, m = 1 In this single ion case, n νj/νi i n νj/ν k k = constant. (4) n 1 = where w satisfies the Airy-tye equation [0], (Cx + K), = w ν 1 w, (5) w ν 1 (Cx + K)w = 0. (6) 5
5. m = Here, the n i, i = 1, are given by n 1 = ( ) ( ) ν 1 Cx K ν Cx K, n =, (7) ν ν 1 ν 1 ν and the second order ODE for (x) has degree one in. All such second order ordinary differential equations which have the Painlevé roerty have been classified by Painlevé [1] and Gambier [1]. The first case ν 1 : ν = 1 :, c 1 = 0, c = 0, + ν 1 ν Kν 1 = 0 (8) belongs to Class 10 of Gambier and its general solution is ellitic with = w ν w, n 1 = k 1 w, n = k w, w ν 1 w k 1w k w K = 0. (9) The second case may be reduced to the Painlevé II equation ν 1 : ν = 1 : 1, 1 ν ν 1 (Cx + K) + ν 1(c 1 c ) = 0 (30) under the scaling transformation d U dx = U3 + XU + α (31) = k ν 1 U, x = X k K C, k3 = ν 1C, α = c 1 c C. (3) The third case ν 1 : ν = 1 :, 3ν 1 + ν 1 3 ν 1(Cx + K) + ν 1 (c 1 + c ) = 0 (33) belongs to Class 5 of Gambier and is linearizable with = w ν w, w ν 1 (Cx + K)w ν 1 (c 1 + c )w = 0. (34) 5.3 m = 3 The three cases to be considered are: (3a): ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1, (c 1, c, c 3 ) = (0, 0, 1)C, (3b): ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1, (c 1, c, c 3 ) = (0, 3, )C, (3c): ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : :, (c 1, c, c 3 ) = (0, 0, 1)C. (35) The class of equations to which the ODE (18) 3 belongs, namely + b + d 3 + h 3 + k + q 4 + f 6 (36) + subdominant terms = 0, has been investigated in []-[4], but the results therein are insufficient to cover the above three cases. For C = K = 0, the integration by ellitic functions (see (10)) was known to Chazy []. For arbitrary values of C and K, we roceed directly with the original system (1). 6
In the first case, two c i vanish, so that obeys a second order ODE and a birational transformation exists between and w with = w ν w, n 1 = k 1 w, n = k w, (3a): w w ( w + ν 1 k 1 w (Cx + K)w + k ) = 0, (37) w 3k ν1 w = ν1 3 / + ν1 (Cx + K) ν 1C. The ODE for w belongs to Class 34 of Gambier and its general solution is an algebraic transform of the PII function U (31) with (3a): k 1 ν 1w = εk du dx + k U ν 1 (Cx + K), x = X k K C, k 3 = ν1c, 8k1k = (α + ε) C, ε = 1. In the second case, since only one of the c i vanishes, the ODE for w is of third order and a birational transformation links and w with (3b): = w ν w, n 1 = k 1 w, w + ν 1 [ 6k 1ww (Cx + K)w 4Cw] = 0, ν 1 (38) (39) 6k 1 ν1w = + 3ν 1 + ν1 3 ν1 (Cx + K) 4ν 1C. The ODE for w belongs to Class XIII of Chazy [] and admits the first integral (3b): K = ( w + (Cx + K)k1 1 ) w w Cw k 1 ν1 k w3 4ν1 (Cx + K)w ν1 (Cx + w K), 1 k 1 = ν 1 k 1 n 1 [ν 1 (Cx + K)n 3 C ν 1 n 1 n ]. (40) This second order ODE for w again belongs to Class 34 of Gambier and it may be integrated in terms of the PII function U with k 1 ν1 w = εkdu dx + k U, (3b): x = X k K (41) C, k3 = ν1 C, k 1 K = C α(α + ε), ε = 1. The third case, for which again two c i vanish, follows the same attern as the first case and we have = w ν 3 w, n 1 = k 1 w 1, n = k w, (3c): w + ν1 [ 4k w 3 ] (Cx + K)w k 1 = 0, (4) 1k ν1 w = 3ν 1 + ν1 3 ν1 (Cx + K) + ν 1C, so that a PII equation is obtained for w. It is remarked that, in the three cases considered above, the first integral of the third order ODE (18) 3 for is a olynomial of third degree in. This underlines the advantage in roceeding with w rather than in our analysis. 7
5.4 m = 4 In the unique case to be integrated, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 : ν 4 = 1 : : 1 :, c 1 = c = c 3 = c 4 = 0, (43) the four first integrals immediately yield the solution, = w ν w, n 1 = k 1 w, n = k w, n 3 = k 3 w 1, n 4 = k 4 w, w ν 1 w k 1w k w k 3 w 1 k 4 w K = 0, (44) so that w in general is an ellitic function. The case when m is arbitrary and all the c i s vanish is similarly reduced to a first order ODE integrable by a quadrature, however with a multi-valued solution when m > 4. 6 Conclusion The analysis resented here has been used to isolate, in articular, underlying Painlevé II structure in the 3-ion electrodiffusion model. This has otential alication to the construction of uer and lower solutions to two-oint boundary value roblems [5]. The integrable nature of the model in these cases also allows the alication of Bäcklund transformations [6]. Aendix. Conditions for the absence of movable logarithms After the coefficient 0 of the series (0) has been comuted, the recurrence relation for subsequent k, namely k 1 : E k P(k) k + Q k ({ l l < k}) = 0, (45) deends linearly on k and nonlinearly on the reviously comuted coefficients l. Whenever the ositive integer k is a Fuchs index r of the m-th order ODE (17), the coefficient P(r) vanishes and the condition Q r = 0 must be enforced in order to avoid movable logarithms. For the cases isolated in (15) and for each of the m families 0 = /ν j, these conditions Q r = 0 deliver the following. m = : m = 3: ν 1 : ν = 1 :, j = 1, Q 6 = c (c 1 + c ), ν 1 : ν = 1 :, j =, Q 3 = c 1, ν 1 : ν = 1 : 1, j = 1, Q 4 = 0, ν 1 : ν = 1 : 1, j =, Q 4 = 0, ν 1 : ν = 1 :, j = 1, no condition, ν 1 : ν = 1 :, j =, Q 1 = 0. ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1, j = 1, Q 4 = 0, Q 6 = c (c 1 + c + 3c 3 ), ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1, j =, Q 1 = 0, Q 3 = c 1, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : : 1, j = 3, Q 4 = 0, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : :, j = 1, Q 6 = c (5c c + 6c 3 ), ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : :, j =, Q 3 = c 1, Q 4 = 0, ν 1 : ν : ν 3 = 1 : :, j = 3, Q 1 = 0, Q 4 = c 1.
