On Jordan type inequalities for hyperbolic functions R. Klén, M. Visuri and M. Vuorinen Department of Mathematics, University of Turku, FI-004, Finland arxiv: v5 [math.ca] 8 Apr 00 Abstract. This paper deals with some inequalities for trigonometric and hyperbolic functions such as the Jordan inequality and its generalizations. In particular, lower and upper bounds for functions such as (sin )/ and / sinh are proved. Keywords. Jordan type inequality; hyperbolic functions Mathematics Subject Classification D05, 6D07 Introduction During the past several years there has been a great deal of interest in trigonometric inequalities [B, B, DZ, JY, L, WSD, ZS]. The classical Jordan inequality [M, p. ] sin, 0 < < π/, (.) π has been in the focus of these studies and many refinements have been proved for it by S.-H. Wu and H.M. Srivastava [WS, WS], X. Zhang, G. Wang and Y. Chu [ZWC], J.-L. Li and Y.-L. Li [LL], [L], S.-H. Wu and L. Debnath [WD, WD, WD], A.Y. Özban [Ö], F. Qi, D.-W. Niu and B.-N. Guo[QNG], L. Zhu [Z, Z, Z, Z4, Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, Z9, Z0, Z], J. Sándor [S, S], Á. Baricz and S. Wu [BW, BW], E. Neuman and J. Sándor [NS], R. P. Agarwal, Y.-H. Kim and S. K. Sen [AKS], D.-W. Niu, Z.-H. Huo, J. Cao and F. Qi [NHCQ], W. Pan and L. Zhu [PZ] and F. Qi and B.-N. Guo [QG]. For a long list of recent papers on this topic see [ZS] and for an etensive survey see [QNG]. The proofs are based on familiar methods of calculus. In particular, a method based on a l Hospital type criterion for monotonicity of the quotient of two functions from G. D. Anderson, M. K. Vamanamurthy and M. Vuorinen [AVV] is a key tool in these studies. Some other applications of this criterion are reviewed in [AVV, AVV]. I. Pinelis has found several applications of this criterion in [P] and in several other papers. The inequality +cos sin +cos, (.)
where ( π/,π/) is well-known and it was studied recently by Á. Baricz in [B, p. ]. The second inequality of (.) is given in [M, p. 54,.9.] for 0 π. For a refinement of the first inequality in (.) see Remark.5 () and of the second inequality see Theorem.6. This paper is motivated by these studies and it is based on the Master Thesis of M. Visuri [Le]. Some of our main results are the following theorems.. Theorem. For (0,π/).4 Theorem. For (0,) sinh < sin < sinh. ( ) < cosh sinh < ( ) 4. cosh We will consider quotientssin/ and/sinh at origin as limiting values lim 0 sin/ = and lim 0 /sinh =..5 Remark. () Let g () = +cos + sin 6 Then g () g () > 0 on (0,π/) because d d (g () g ()) = cos 6 In [QCX, (7)] it is proved that for (0,π/) sin g (). and g () = +cos. > 0. Hence (+cos)/+(sin)/6 is a better lower bound for (sin)/ than (.) for (0,π/). () Observe that +cos = +cos (/) cos (.6) which holds true as equality if and only ifcos(/) = (±)/4. In conclusion, (.6) holds for all ( π/,π/). Together with (.) we now have and by (.6) cos = +cos > cos cos < sin < cos.
Jordan s inequality In this section we will find upper and lower bounds for (sin)/ by using hyperbolic trigonometric functions.. Theorem. For (0,π/) cosh < sin < sinh. Proof. The lower bound ofsin/ holds true if the functionf() = sincosh is positive on (0,π/). Since f () = cossinh we have f () > 0 for (0,π/) and f () is increasing on (0,π/). Therefore f () = coscosh+sinsinh > f (0) = 0 and the function f() is increasing on (0,π/). Now f() > f(0) = 0 for (0,π/). The upper bound of sin/ holds true if the function g() = sinsinh is positive on (0,π/). Let us denote h() = tan tanh. Since cos < < cosh for (0,π/) we have h () = cosh cos > 0 and h() > h(0) = 0 for (0,π/). Now g () = (coscosh)h(), which is positive on (0,π/), because coscosh > 0 and h() > 0 for (0,π/). Therefore and g () = ( coscosh) > g(0) = 0 g () = cossinh sincosh > g (0) = 0 for (0,π/). Now g() > g(0) = 0 for (0,π/). Proof of Theorem.. The upper bound of sin/ is clear by Theorem.. The lower bound of sin/ holds true if the function f() = sinsinh is positive on (0,π/). Let us assume (0,π/). Since sin > /6 = (6 )/6 we have f() > ((6 )sinh )/6. We will show that g() = 6 6 sinh (.)
is positive which implies the assertion. Now g() > 0 is equivalent to sinh > 6 6. Since sinh > + /6 it is sufficient to show that+ /6 > 6/ 6, which is equivalent to ( ) > 0. (.) Let us denote h() = Now h () = 4( +) and therefore h () 0 andh() > min{h(0),h(π/)} > 0. Therefore inequality (.) holds for (0,π/) and the assertion follows. We net show that for (0,) the upper and lower bounds of (.) are better than the upper and lower bounds in Theorem...4 Theorem. i) For (,) +cos sinh. ii) For ( π/,π/) cosh +cos = cos. iii) For ( π/,π/) +sin +cos +cos. Proof. i) The claim holds true if the functionf() = sinh sinhcos is non-negative on [0,). By a simple computation we obtain f () = (coshsin sinh). Inequality f () 0 is equivalent to sin tanh. By the series epansions of sin and tanh we obtain sin tanh = = n,n (mod ) n,n (mod ) ( ) (n )/ (n+) n+ ( n+ )B n+ n (n+)! c n n, 4
where B j is the j th Bernoulli number. By the properties of the Bernoullin numbers c = /6, c = /8, coefficients c n, for n (), form an alternating sequence, c n n 0 as n and c m+ > c m+ for m. Therefore by Leibniz Criterion sin tanh = ( ) 4 4 and sin tanh for all [0,). Now f() is a conve function on [0,) and f () is nondecreasing on [0,) with f (0) = 0. Therefore f() is nondecreasing and f() f(0) = 0. ii) The claim holds true if the function g() = cosh(+cos) is nonnegative on[0,π/). By the series epansion ofcos we havecos + / 0 and therefore by the series epansion of cosh g() and the assertion follows. iii) Clearly we have (+ ) (+cos) = cos + + cos cos + 0 (+cos )(+sin ) = +sin cos, which implies the first inequality of the claim. The second inequality is trivial since cos (0,)..5 Theorem. Let (0,π/). Then i) the function is increasing on (, ), ii) the function is decreasing on (, ), f(t) = cos t t g(t) = sin t t iii) the functions f(t) = cosh t (/t) and g(t) = sinh t (/t) are decreasing on (0, ). 5
Proof. i) Let us consider instead of f() the function f (y) = y logcosy, for y (0,). Note that f(t) = ep(f (/t)) and therefore the claim is equivalent to the function f (y) being decreasing on (0,). We have f (y) = y(logcosy +ytany) and f (y) 0 is equivalent to f (y) = logcosy +ytany 0. Since f (y) = y/cos y 0 we have f (y) f (0) = 0. Therefore f(t) is increasing on (, ). ii) We will consider instead of g() the function g (y) = y logsiny, for y (0,). Note that g(t) = ep(g (/t)) and therefore the claim is equivalent to the function g (y) being increasing on (0,). We have g (y) = y(y/tany logcosy) and g (y) 0 is equivalent to g (y) = y/tany logcosy 0. Since g (y) = ((/cosy) (y/siny))/siny 0 we have g (y) f (0) =. Therefore g (y) 0 and the assertion follows. iii) We will show that h (y) = (/y)logcoshy is increasing on (0, ). Now h (y) = ((ytanhy logcoshy))/y, d(ytanhy logcoshy) dy = y cosh y > 0 and ytanhy logcoshy 0. Therefore the function h (y) is increasing on (0, ) and f(t) is decreasing on (0, ). We will show that h (y) = (/y)logsinhy is increasing on (0, ). Now h (y) = ((ycothy logsinhy))/y, d(ycothy logsinhy) dy = y sinh y < 0 and cothy (logsinhy)/y lim y cothy (logsinhy)/y = 0. Therefore the function h (y) is increasing on (0, ) and g(t) is decreasing on (0, ). We net will improve the upper bound of (.). 6
.6 Theorem. For ( 7/5, 7/5) cos sin ( ) cos Proof. The first inequality of (.7) follows from (.). By the series epansions of sin and cos sin ( 8 +cos. (.7) ) ( ) cos, where the second inequality is equivalent to 4 (7 5 )/960 0 and the second inequality of (.7) follows. By the identity cos = (cos+cos)/4 the upper bound of (.7) is equivalent to cos 9 cos(/). By the series epansion of cos 8+cos 9cos(/) = n= and by the Leibniz Criterion the assertion follows. ( ) n n 9 n (n)! n Hyperbolic Jordan s inequality In this section we will find upper and lower bounds for the functions /sinh and cosh.. Theorem. For ( π/,π/) 6 sin π. Proof. We obtain from the series epansion of sin sin 6, which proves the lower bound. By using the identity cos = sin (/) the chain of inequalities (.) gives sin sin (/) and the assertion follows from inequality sin (/) (/π). 7
. Remark. Li -Li have proved [LL, (4.9)] that ) sin ( < p() < π π, 0 < < π, where p() = / +(/π) 4 <. This result improves Theorem... Lemma. For (0,) i) sinh < + 5, ii) cosh < + 5 9, iii) cosh <. Proof. i) For (0,) we have ( ) > 0 which is equivalent to By Theorem., Theorem. and (.4) sinh sin ii) Since (n)! > 6 n for n we have < + /6 5. (.4) < + /6 5. cosh = 8 n (n)! n= 8 (n)! n= ( ) = 7 (n)! n= ( ) 7 6 n > 0. iii) By the series epansion of cosh we have ) ) cosh ( (+ )( = >. n= 8
Proof of Theorem.4. The lower bound of / sinh follows from Lemma. and Theorem. since ) ( < ( cosh < ). 6 sinh The upper bound of /sinh holds true if the function g() = sinh 4 4 cosh is positive on (0,). By the series epansion it is clear that By Lemma. and (.5) g() > (+ 6 and the assertion follows..6 Theorem. For (0, π 4 ) sinh > + /6. (.5) ) 4 ) (+ 4 = 6 96 ( ) > 0 cosh < cos (cos) (sin). Proof. The upper bound of cosh holds true if the function f() = cos cosh (cos sin ) is positive on (0,π/4). Since we have f () = 4sin()sinh() > 0 f () = sin()sinh() cos()cosh() > f (0) = 0. Therefore f() > f(0) = 0 and the assertion follows..7 Theorem. For (0, π 4 ) < cosh < (cos) / cos. Proof. The upper bound of cosh holds true if the function f() = coscosh is positive on (0,π/4). Since f () = sinsinh > 0 the functionf () = coshsin cossinh is increasing. Thereforef () > f (0) = 0 and f() > f(0) = 0. 9
The lower bound ofcosh holds true if the functiong() = cos cosh is positive on (0,π/4). By the series epansions we have g() > ( ) ) (+ = ( ). By a straightforward computation we see that the polynomial h() = is strictly decreasing on (0,π/4). Therefore h() > h(π/4) and the assertion follows. = 6 π π4 + π π8 6 5 > = > Remark. Á. Baricz and S. Wu have shown in [BW, pp ] that the right hand side of Theorem. is true for (0,π) and the right hand side of Theorem.7 is true for (0,π/). Their proof is based on the infinite product representations. Note that for (0,π/4) cos cos (cos) (sin). Hence, the upper bound in Theorem.7 is better that in Theorem.6. 4 Trigonometric inequalities 4. Theorem. For (0,) the following inequalities hold i) ii) iii) iv) arcsin sin, arcsinh sinh, arctan tan, arctanh tanh. 0
Proof. i) By setting = sint the assertion is equivalent to sinct sinc(sint), which is true because sinct = (sint)/t is decreasing on (0,π/) and sint t. ii) By the series epansions of sinh and arcsinh we have by Leibniz Criterion ) (sinh) arcsinh (+ )( = 0080 ( ) and since > 77 on (0,) the assertion follows. iii) By the series epansions of tan and arctan we have by Leibniz Criterion (tan)arctan ( = ( ) ) )( and since > 4 on (0,) the assertion follows. iv) By the series epansions of tanh and arctanh we have by Leibniz Criterion ) (tanh) arctanh ( )( = 6 45 (4 ) and since 4 > on (0,) the assertion follows. 4. Remark. Similar inequalities to Theorem 4. have been considered by E. Neuman in [N, pp. 4-5]. 4. Theorem. Let k (0,). Then i) for (0,π) ii) for > 0 sin sin(k) k, sinh sinh(k), k
iii) for (0,) tanh tanh(k). k Proof. i) The claim follows from the fact that sinc is decreasing on (0,π). ii) The claim is equivalent to saying that the function f() = (sinh)/ is increasing for > 0. Since f () = (cosh)/ (sinh)/ 0 and f () 0 is equivalent to tanh the assertion follows. iii) The claim is equivalent to tanh(k) ktanh 0. By the series epansion of tanh we have tanh(k) ktanh = k 4 n+ (4 n+ )B (n+) n+ (k n ), (n+)! n= where B j is the jth Bernoulli number (B 0 =, B = /, B = /6,...). The assertion follows from the Leibniz Criterion, if k k for all (0,). Since (4.4) is equivalent to (k k5 ) 5 > 0 (4.4) 5 < 5 (+k ) the assertion follows from the assumptions k (0,) and (0,).
