N =1 and N =2 cosets from gauged supersymmetric WZW models José M Figueroa-O Farrill a,1,2 and Sonia Stanciu b,3 arxiv:hep-th/ v2 2 Dec 1995 a Department of Physics, Queen Mary and Westfield College, Mile End Road, London E1 4NS, UK Abstract b ICTP, P.O. Box 586, I Trieste, ITALY We present a derivation of the N =1 and N =2 superconformal coset constructions starting from a supersymmetric WZW model where a diagonal subgroup has been gauged. We work in the general framework of self-dual (not necessarily reductive) Lie algebras; but even in the reductive case these results are new. We show that the BRST cohomology of the gauged supersymmetric WZW model contains the N=1 (and if it exists also the N=2) coset generators. We also extend the BRST analysis to show that the BRST cohomology of the supersymmetric WZW model agrees with that of an ordinary bosonic WZW model (in a representation twisted by the presence of the coset fermions). In particular, in the case of the topological G/G coset, the supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric theories agree. 1 Introduction The relationship between the coset construction [2,12,6] G/H and the gauged Wess Zumino Witten (WZW) model is well-known. The judicious use of the Polyakov Wiegmann identity and the careful consideration on the path integral jacobians allows one to write the gauged WZW model in terms of the original (ungauged) WZW model on G, an auxiliary WZW model on H, and some anticommuting H-ghosts [15,6]. Further analysis of this gauge theory reveals that in the BRST cohomology one has a realisation of the coset Virasoro algebra, and when G is compact, restricting to a suitable subclass of 1 Supported in part by the EPSRC under contract GR/K mailto:j.m.figueroa@qmw.ac.uk 3 mailto:sonia@ictp.trieste.it Preprint submitted to hep-th/ February 2008
representations of the affine Lie algebra, one recovers [10] precisely the unitary series of Virasoro representations expected from the construction in [12]. The supersymmetric situation is somewhat different. The N=1 and N=2 coset constructions were studied originally in [16,21], where only reductive that is, semisimple abelian Lie algebras were considered. However a satisfactory derivation of these coset constructions from a supersymmetric gauged WZW model was lacking. 4 Correct path integral constructions were written down in [25], derived in [18] (for a particular model) and in [24] (in general). However a conformal field theoretical derivation of the supersymmetric coset constructions from a gauged WZW model, in the style of [15], does not exist. The point of this letter is to remedy this situation. This letter is organised as follows. In Section 2 we briefly set the notation and review the conformal field theory describing the N=1 supersymmetric WZW model and the gauging of a diagonal subgroup. We then describe the superconformal field theories described by these models: the N=1 (affine) Sugawara construction in Section 3 and the N=1 coset construction in Section 4. In Section 5 we prove that the natural N=1 Virasoro algebra of the gauged N=1 WZW model is both BRST invariant and BRST cohomologous to the one coming from the coset construction. In Section 6 we discuss the N=2 cosets and we prove that when these cosets exist, the extra N=2 generators are also BRST invariant. In Section 7 we prove that the BRST cohomology of the gauged supersymmetric WZW model reduces to that of a gauged bosonic WZW model coupled to the coset fermions. In particular, when discussing the topological gauging G/G, the two theories supersymmetric and bosonic agree. Finally a note on the notation. Because this work arose as part of the programme initiated in [6] and continued in [8] on WZW models based on Lie groups which are not necessarily compact, we work under the assumption that Lie algebras are self-dual, but not necessarily reductive. For nonreductive Lie algebras the notion of level does not make sense and is replaced by that of an invariant metric, which need not be proportional to any canonical metric (as is the case in simple Lie algebras, for example). Similarly, the dual Coxeter number is now replaced (roughly) by the Killing form. 4 Superconformal field theories were obtained in [20] (see also [17]) from gauged supersymmetric WZW models, but these theories do not coincide with the N =1 coset constructions they have different central charges. 2
2 The gauged supersymmetric WZW model The N=1 WZW model is defined classically by the action (i α) 1 I S Ω[G] = G 1 DG, G 1 DG Σ S + G 1 t G, [ G 1 DG, G 1 DG ], B S where Σ S is a super-riemann surface, B S a supermanifold with boundary Σ S and G is a superfield whose θ-independent component takes values in a Lie group G which we assume posses a bi-invariant metric Ω. 5 Expanding into components and solving for the auxiliary fields, the above model has a particularly simple description in terms of a bosonic G-valued field g and Majorana Weyl fermions ψ and ψ with values in the Lie algebra g: I S Ω [G] = I Ω[g] + I Ω [ψ, ψ; g], (1) where I Ω [g] is the bosonic WZW action defined in [6], and I Ω [ψ, ψ; g] is the action for Majorana Weyl fermions axially coupled to the bosonic currents. The quantum theory is described by the path integral Z = [dg][dψ][d ψ]e I Ω[g] I Ω [ψ, ψ;g], (2) or equivalently, by an N=1 affine Lie algebra [3,1,9,14] with data (g, Ω), where we let Ω also denote the invariant metric on g. Such Lie algebras are known as self-dual. (Of course, the theory has both a holomorphic and an antiholomorphic sector, but as usual we concentrate on the holomorphic one.) Fix once and for all a basis X a for g, relative to which Ω has components Ω ab and such that the structure constants are f ab c. This N=1 affine Lie algebra is generated by currents I a (z) and fermions ψ a (z), obeying the following OPEs: I a (z)i b (w)= Ω ab () + f ab c I c (w) 2 I a (z)ψ b (w)= f ab c ψ c (w) ψ a (z)ψ b (w)= Ω ab. (3) 5 Ω is written as, above to avoid cluttering the notation. 3
Because Ω is nondegenerate, we can decouple the fermions from the affine currents. Indeed, in terms of the modified currents: J a (z) I a (z) 1 2 Ωbd f ab c (ψ c ψ d )(z) (4) the OPEs (3) become J a (z)j b (w)= Ω ab 1 κ 2 ab + f ab c J c (w) () 2 J a (z)ψ b (w)= reg ψ a (z)ψ b (w)= Ω ab, (5) where κ ab = f ac d f bd c is the Killing form on g. Since g is not necessarily semisimple, κ need not be nondegenerate. Nevertheless, as shown in [6,7], Ω 1 2 κ will generically be nondegenerate. Now let h g be a Lie subalgebra such that the restriction Ω h of Ω to h remains nondegenerate. Assume that we have chosen the basis for g in such a way that a sub-basis X i is a basis for h. The condition on h means that Ω ij is an invariant metric on h. (In particular, h is also self-dual.) In [8] it is proven that this is a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the N=1 coset construction g/h. In this letter we will see that the diagonally gauged supersymmetric WZW model reproduces this coset construction. As shown in [18,24,8] gauging both the fermionic and bosonic symmetries corresponding to the diagonal subalgebra h gives rise to the following path integral: Z = [dg][dψ][d ψ][d h][d ψ][d ψ][db][dc][dβ][dγ][d b][d c][d β][d γ] e I Ω[g] I Ω [ψ, ψ;g] e I Ω[ h]+i Ω [ ψ, ψ; h] e I gh[b,c, b, c,β,γ, β, γ], where (b, c) and ( b, c) are the ghosts familiar from the nonsupersymmetric gauged WZW model, and (β, γ) and ( β, γ) are the (bosonic) ghosts corresponding to the gauged fermionic symmetry. Notice that unlike in the nonsupersymmetric case, the metric of the auxiliary h-sector does not get shifted. This is because the jacobian responsible for the shift receives now an equal but opposite contribution from the new fermionic sector. We may also describe this quantum theory as a superconformal field theory consisting of three sectors coupled by a constraint, where again we omit the antiholomorphic sector: 4
the original N=1 affine Lie algebra with data (g, Ω); a second N=1 affine Lie algebra with data (h, Ω h ) generated by Ĩi(z) and ψ i (z) subject to the OPEs: Ĩ i (z)ĩj(w)= Ω ij () + f ij k Ĩ k (w) 2 Ĩ i (z) ψ j (w)= f ij k ψk (w) ψ i (z) ψ j (w)= Ω ij ; (6) a supersymmetric ghost system with fermionic (b i, c i ) and bosonic (β i, γ i ) generators subject to the OPEs: b i (z)c j (w) = δj i and β i(z)γ j (w) = δj i. The ghost sector also carries a realisation of the N=1 affine Lie algebra with data (h, 0). Indeed, we can define I gh i (z) f ij k b k c j f ij k β k γ j and ψ gh i (z) f ij k β k c j, which obey the OPEs I gh i (z)i gh j (w)= f ij k I gh k (w) I gh i (z)ψ gh j (w)= f ij k ψ gh k (w) ψ i (z)ψ j (w)=reg. (7) Notice that since the metric is zero, the fermions ψ gh k yet this will not represent any problem. cannot be decoupled; Tensoring the three sectors we obtain a realisation of the N=1 affine Lie algebra with data (h, 0) generated by the total fields: Ii tot (z) I i (z) + Ĩi(z) + I gh i (z) and ψi tot (z) ψ i (z) + ψ i (z) + ψ gh i (z). The absence of central terms in the algebra generated by Ii tot (z) and ψi tot (z) just reiterates the fact that we have gauged a non-anomalous symmetry and 5
implies that the BRST charge 6 d = [j BRST, ] 1, defined by j BRST = (I i + Ĩi)c i (ψ i + ψ i )γ i f ij k β k c i γ j 1 2 f ij k b k c i c j (8) squares to zero. In fact, the first order pole [j BRST, j BRST ] 1 actually vanishes. It will be convenient to introduce the linear combinations: ψ ± i ψ i ± ψ i. 3 The N=1 Virasoro algebras Associated with any N=1 affine Lie algebra based on a self-dual Lie algebra, there is a supersymmetric Sugawara construction which yields an N=1 Virasoro algebra. For the algebra defined by (3) we define: G g Ω ab J a ψ b 1 6 fabc ψ a ψ b ψ c and T g 1 2 Ωab J a J b Ωab ψ a ψ b, where f abc Ω ad Ω be f de c. Notice that we have used the decoupled currents J a defined by equation (4). G g and T g satisfy an N=1 Virasoro algebra with central charge c g = 3 2 dim g 1 2 Ωab κ g ab, where we now let κg denote the Killing form of g. Similarly for the N=1 affine Lie algebra defined by (6) one defines G h Ω ij Ji ψj 1 6 fijk ψi ψj ψk and Th 1 2 Ωij Ji Jj 1 2 Ωij ψ i ψj, where J i are the decoupled currents in this sector which are defined similarly to those in equation (4) but with metric Ω ij. The N=1 Virasoro algebra satisfied by G h and T h has central charge c h = 3 2 dim h Ωij κ h ij. Finally we define the N=1 Virasoro algebra for the ghost system. Since the fermionic ghosts have weights (1, 0) and the bosonic ghosts have weights ( 1 2, 1 2 ), we write G gh b i γ i + β i c i and T gh b i c i ( βi γ i β i γ i). The N=1 Virasoro algebra satisfied by G gh and T gh has the expected central charge c gh = 3 dim h. 6 We use the [, ] n notation for operator product expansions. The properties of these brackets are summarised for example in [11,22]. 6
Tensoring all three N=1 Virasoro algebras together we find a realisation with total central charge c tot c g + c h + c gh = 3 2 (dim g dim h) 1 2 ( Ω ab κ g ab Ωij κ h ij ), (9) which as we will see presently is the central charge of the N=1 coset construction. 4 The N=1 coset construction Given a self-dual Lie algebra (g, Ω) and a Lie subalgebra h g such that the restriction Ω h is nondegenerate, we can define an N=1 coset construction. This is done as follows [8]. Define currents Ĵi I i 1 2 Ωjl f ij k ψ k ψ l. Notice that Ĵ i is not equal to the modified current defined in (4) (unless g = h) but that nonetheless the new currents are decoupled from the h-fermions: Ĵ i (z)ψ j (w) = reg, and still define a realisation of an affine Lie algebra based on h: Ĵ i (z)ĵj(w) = Ω ij 1 2 κh ij () + f ij k Ĵ k (w) 2, where now κ h ij is the Killing form on h, which need not agree with the restriction to h of the Killing form on g. By assumption, the restriction of the metric Ω on g to h is nondegenerate, so we can decompose g = h h, which, because of the invariance of the metric, is not just a decomposition of vector space but also one of h-modules. If we let X α denote a basis for h, we can summarise this discussion by saying that Ω iα = 0 and that f iα j = 0. (Notice, however, that there is no restriction on f αβ γ, hence the above decomposition, although reductive, need not be symmetric.) Define now the following N=1 Virasoro generators: G h Ω ij Ĵ i ψ j 1 6 fijk ψ i ψ j ψ k and T h 1 2 Ωij Ĵ i Ĵ j Ωij ψ i ψ j, whose central charge is given by c h = 3 2 dim h 1 2 Ωij κ h ij. 7
The N=1 coset theory is generated by G g/h G g G h and T g/h T g T h. These fields obey an N=1 Virasoro algebra with central charge c g/h c g c h which agrees with (9), and, more importantly, they have regular OPEs with G h and T h. 5 N=1 coset theory in BRST cohomology The equality between the central charge c g/h of the coset construction and the central charge c tot of the gauged supersymmetric WZW model suggests that the two theories are actually equivalent. In fact, we now show that the BRST cohomology of the gauged supersymmetric WZW model admits a realisation of the coset theory. Just like in the nonsupersymmetric case [15,6], all we need to show is that the generators of the coset SCFT (G g/h, T g/h ) and of the gauged supersymmetric WZW SCFT (G tot, T tot ) are not just BRST-invariant but also BRST-cohomologous, so that their differences G G tot G g/h and T T tot T g/h are BRST-exact. Since the BRST operator d is a derivation over the operator product and since, under the operator product, it is G tot and G g/h which generate the algebra, it is enough to show our claim on these generators. Indeed, a short calculation shows that both G tot and G g/h are BRST-invariant, and moreover that G tot G g/h = dθ, with Θ = 1 2 Ωij b i ψ j Ωij β i (I j Ĩj) fijk β i ( ψj ψ k + ψ j ψk ψ j ψk ). 6 N=2 cosets Under certain circumstances the N=1 coset theory admits an extra supersymmetry giving rise to an N=2 coset. For g a reductive Lie algebra that is, semisimple abelian this is the celebrated Kazama Suzuki construction [16,21,11]. For a general self-dual Lie algebra (g, Ω) the conditions for the existence of an N=2 theory extending the N=1 coset g/h are the following [8]. Let k h g be the orthogonal complement of h g. Then k must possess an h-invariant, integrable complex structure compatible with the restriction to k of the metric Ω. Comparing with [13], this condition supports our intuition that 8
the CFT defined by the N=2 coset is indeed described (at least classically) by a σ-model on the coset space G/H. Let A : k k denote the complex structure. Relative to the basis X α for k, A has components A α β. Because A is compatible with the metric A αβ = A βα, where A αβ = A α γω βγ. Define J and G 2 by 2i J A αβ ψ α ψ β A αβ f αβ c I c G 2 A αβ J α ψ β Aαα A ββ A γγ f αβγ ψ α ψ β ψ γ. Then together with G 1 G g/h and T T g/h, they obey an N=2 Virasoro algebra. If the gauged supersymmetric WZW model is to describe the N=1 coset theory, any extended symmetry of the N=1 Virasoro algebra which the coset theory admits, must be already present (maybe up to BRST-exact terms) among the BRST-invariant fields in the WZW model. Therefore we expect that the N=2 extension, whenever it exists, must be BRST-invariant or, in this case, since they don t involve the ghosts, actually gauge invariant. Since J and G 1 generate the rest of the N=2 Virasoro algebra, and G 1 is already BRST-invariant, all we need to show is that J is BRST-invariant. But this follows trivially from the h-invariance of the complex structure. This proves that the gauged supersymmetric WZW model does provide a lagrangian realisation of the N=2 coset construction. 7 Decoupling the h-fermions The structure of the BRST current j BRST is very suggestive. Notice that it can be written as the sum of two terms whose charges separately square to zero. Indeed, let us write j BRST = j 0 + j 1, where j 0 = ψ + i γ i and j 1 = (I i + Ĩi)c i f ij k β k c i γ j 1 2 f ij k b k c i c j. The subscripts refer to the (b, c) ghost number. Given that both (b, c) and (β, γ) ghosts numbers are separately conserved, we have that the respective differentials d 0 [j 0, ] 1 and d 1 [j 1, ] 1 form a double complex: d 2 0 = d 2 1 = d 0 d 1 + d 1 d 0 = 0. Moreover the form of j 0 is reminiscent of a Koszul complex. Indeed, (ψ ± i, β i, γ i ) forms a Kugo Ojima quartet (see, for instance, [5] for the relevant notions) and decouple from the theory. We can see this in either of two ways. 9
First of all, as in all double complexes, there is a spectral sequence converging to the BRST cohomology whose E 1 and E 2 terms are the cohomology H d0 of d 0 and H d1 (H d0 ) respectively. Since the cohomology of d 0 is isomorphic to the CFT obtained by decoupling the above Kugo Ojima quartet, the spectral sequence degenerates at the E 2 term. Thus the BRST cohomology is isomorphic to the cohomology of d 1 acting on the remaining fields. Alternatively, we can just change variables. Let s introduce the field r(z) 1 2 Ωjl f ij k β l ψ k ci. Let R = r(z) denote its charge. If φ(z) is any field, we define the conjugation by R as follows: e R φ(z) e R k 0 1 [r, [r, [r, φ(z)] 1 ] 1 ] 1. k! }{{} k It is easy to see that with the r(z) defined above, this sum is actually finite. Applying this conjugation to the BRST current, we find e R j BRST e R = j 0 + j, where j = (Ĵi + J i )c i 1 2 f ij k b k c i c j. Notice that now j 0 and j are completely decoupled, since j involves the currents Ĵi and J i which do not interact with the h-fermions. At the level of the fields, conjugation by R induces a change of variables which, as will be shown in [8], factorises the path integral. In the factor involving the Kugo Ojima quartet, the contribution from the bosonic ghosts cancels precisely the contribution coming from the h-fermions, including the zero modes: since all fields (β i, γ i ) and ψ i ± have weight 1. At the end of the day, one is left with a 2 theory of coset fermions ψ α and a WZW model in which we have gauged the diagonal h symmetry. Notice that the coset fermions are gauged, since it is Ĵi and not J i which appears in j. This theory is precisely the starting point of [25]. As a consequence we have two equivalent descriptions of the physical sector of the supersymmetric gauged WZW model (or equivalently of the N=1 coset theory): the cohomology of d acting on the superconformal field theory generated by (I a, Ĩi, ψ a, ψ i, b i, c i, β i, γ i ); and the cohomology of d [j, ] 1 acting on the superconformal field theory generated by (Ĵa, J i, ψ α, b i, c i ). 10
When h = g, there are no coset fermions, and the gauged supersymmetric WZW model reduces to an ordinary bosonic gauged WZW model. Finally let us remark that from the results in [4] where the above operator R was introduced it follows that any given bosonic gauged WZW model embeds into a supersymmetric gauged WZW model in such a way that their BRST cohomologies are the same. What we have proven above is that in the case of the topological gauging h = g, the converse also holds. In other words, the bosonic and supersymmetric G/G gauged WZW models are equivalent.
