1 THE SATURATION NUMBER FOR CAYLEY S CUBIC SURFACE YUCHAO WANG arxiv: v [math.nt] 26 Jun 204 Abstract. We investigate the density of rational points on Cayley s cubic surface whose coordinates have few prime factors. The key tools used are the circle method and universal torsors.. Introduction Cayley s cubic surface is defined in P 3 by the equation S 0 : x 2 x 3 x 4 `x x 3 x 4 `x x 2 x 4 `x x 2 x 3 0. It has singularity type 4A. Moreover, there are 9 lines in the surface, three of which have the form x i `x j x k `x l 0, and the remaining six have the shape x i x j 0. We shall write U 0 for the complement of these lines in the surface S 0. Heath-Brown[7] considered the density of rational points on Cayley s cubic surface. Let Z 4 prim be the set of vectors x px,x 2,x 3,x 4 q P Z 4 with gcdpx,x 2,x 3,x 4 q. Then we set NpBq #tx P Z 4 prim : rxs P U 0,max x i ď Bu. Manin (see Batyrev and Manin []) has given a very general conjecture which would predict in this case that there is a suitable positive constant c such that NpBq cbplogbq 6, as B Ñ 8. Heath-Brown [7] showed that BplogBq 6! NpBq! BplogBq 6. The approach combines analytic methods with the theory of universal torsors. For details of universal torsors for singular del Pezzo surfaces, we refer the reader to Derenthal [4]. In this paper we are concerned with the almost prime integral points on Cayley s cubic surface. Let P r indicate an r-almost prime, which is a number with at most r prime factors, counted with multiplicity. For any cubic surface S, we write U for the complement of the lines in the surface S. Then we define the saturation number rpsq to be the least number r such that the set of x P Z 4 prim for which rxs P U and x x 2 x 3 x 4 P r, is Zariski dense in U. The main aim of this paper is to show that rps 0 q ă Mathematics Subject Classification. D25, P32, P55. Key words and phrases. universal torsors, circle method.
2 2 YUCHAO WANG Bourgain, Gamburd and Sarnak [2] and Nevo and Sarnak [0] established upper bounds for saturation numbers for orbits of congruence subgroups of semi-simple groups acting linearly on affine space. Moreover, Liu and Sarnak [9] considered the saturation number for certain affine quadric surfaces. Note that Derenthal and Loughran [5, 6] have shown that Cayley s cubic surface is not an equivariant compactification of a linear algebraic group. Thus the methods of [2] or [0] do not apply to S 0. To prove that a set of rxs P U 0 is Zariski dense, it suffices to prove that given ε ą 0 and any ξ P R 4 satisfying rξs P U 0, there exists B P N sufficiently large and at least one point rxs in the set, such that x B ξ ă ε. We will prove the following. Theorem. Let rξs P U 0 and define M U0 pξ,b,rq #tx P Z 4 prim : rxs P U 0, x x 2 x 3 x 4 P r u. Then for sufficiently large B, we have M U0 pξ,b,2q " BplogBq 7. x B ξ! plogbq, The implicit constants are allowed to depend on ξ. In particular, the saturation number satisfies rps 0 q ď 2. Define rps 0 q to be the least number r such that the set of x P Z 4 prim for which rxs P U 0 and the product x x 2 x 3 x 4 has at most r distinct prime factors, is Zariski dense in U 0. Then it is worth pointing out that our methods give rps 0 q ď 4. The idea of the proof is to apply the theory of universal torsors to specify some integral solutions in a particular form, whose coordinates have few prime factors, and then give a lower bound for the number of such solutions which are close to some fixed real solution via the circle method. More precisely, we use the circle method to count the number of solutions to the equation β p `β 2 p 2 `β 3 p 3 `β 4 p 4 0, where p i are primes which lie in certain intervals and β i P t, u, for i,...,4. It seems likely that similar methods will apply to several other singular cubic surfaces. Let S Ă P 3 be the cubic surface given by the equation x x 2 x 3 x 4 px `x 2 `x 3 q 2. There is a unique singular point which is of type D 4. The density of rational points of bounded height on S has been studied by Browning
3 THE SATURATION NUMBER FOR CAYLEY S CUBIC SURFACE 3 [3] and Le Boudec [8]. Arguing similarly as in this paper, we can show that rps q ď 2. Acknowledgements. Write L logb, P L D, B 3 P 3, where D is a sufficiently large parameter to be chosen later. Furthermore, denote S j pαq p j PI j logp j epβ j p j αq.
4 4 YUCHAO WANG Then we have RpBq ` S pαqs 2 pαqs 3 pαqs 4 pαqdα. By Dirichlet s lemma on rational approximation, each α P p, ` s may be written in the form qďp ďaďq pa,qq α a q `λ, λ ă q, for some integers a, q with ď a ď q ď and pa,qq. Now we define the sets of major and minor arcs as follows: M ď ď a q q, a q ` ı, m ` q, ` zm. Then RpBq M S pαqs 2 pαqs 3 pαqs 4 pαqdα ` m S pαqs 2 pαqs 3 pαqs 4 pαqdα. 2.. The major arcs. We first estimate the contribution of the integral over the major arcs. For any α P M, there exist integers a and q such that α a q Hence S j pαq βj ap j logp j e q p j PI j Let and `λ, ď q ď P, pa,qq and λ ă q. q χ mod q h ph,qq W j pχ,λq xw j pχ,λq epβ j λp j q βj ah e χphq logp j χpp j qepβ j λp j q. q p j PI j pλpm j qχpm j q δ χ qepβ j λm j q, p j PI j logp j χpp j qepβ j λp j q δ χ epβ j λm j q, where δ χ or 0 according as χ is principal or not. Then we have (2.) W j pχ,λq xw j pχ,λq logp j χpp k j qepβ jλp k j q! B 6 L. kě2 p k j PI j

The main tool here is a short intervals version of Siegel-Walfisz theorem. Using (6) in Perelli and Pintz [], we see that Λpm j qχpm j q δ χ `OpB L 5D 3 q. Therefore, integration by parts gives W j pχ,λq epβ j λuqd` pλpm j qχpm j q δ χ q I j m j ďu,! pλpm j qχpm j q δ χ q ` λ epβ j λuq` pλpm j qχpm j q δ χ q du I j m j ďu, Thus we obtain!p ` λ B 3 L qb 3 L 5D. Thus we obtain S pαqs 2 pαqs 3 pαqs 4 pαqdα (2.4) M qďp µ 2 pqq φ 4 pqq! BL D. q a pa,qq q q epλf pm,m 2,m 3,m 4 qqdλ

Now we estimate the contribution of the integral over the minor arcs. For any α P m, there exist integers a and q such that P ď q ď, pa,qq and α a ă q q. Using the non-trivial upper bound for the exponential sums over primes in short intervals, we get S pαq! B 3 plogbq A, provided D is chosen tobesufficiently large. Sucharesult canbefound in several references, for example see Theorem 2 in Zhan [2]. Also, we have the following mean-value estimate: ` By Cauchy s inequality, we obtain ` Thus we have (2.6) Combining (2.5) and (2.6), we get m S j pαq 2 dα! B 3. S 2 pαqs 3 pαq dα! B 3. 7 THE SATURATION NUMBER FOR CAYLEY S CUBIC SURFACE The singular series. For the singular series, we have µpqq2 ď 3 3. Note that Thus we obtain S ź p ` pp q 3 SpP q S! qąp Since JpBq! BplogBq 3, then we have 8 µpqq 2 3 ". q 3! L D. RpBq JpBqS `OpBplogBq A q. Now we establish the lower bound for JpBq. For j,2,3, we fix m j P rη j B 3 B 3 plogbq,η 3 j B 3 ` B 3 plogbq s. Recall that 3 β η `β 2 η 2 `β 3 η 3 `β 4 η 4 0, thus we have β m `β 2 m 2`β 3 m 3 P r β 4 η 4 B 3 B 3 plogbq, β 4 η 4 B 3 `B 3 plogbq s. Since I 4 rη 4 B 3 B plogbq 3,η 4 B 3 `B plogbq 3 s, then we obtain JpBq " BplogBq 3. Therefore we prove the lemma. 3. The universal torsor In this section, we use a passage to the universal torsor for Cayley s cubic surface. Details can be found in Section 2 of Heath-Brown [7]. It is shown that the universal torsor for Cayley s cubic surface is an open subvariety in A 3 SpecZrv 2,v 3,v 4,y,y 2,y 3,y 4,z 2,z 3,z 4,z 23,z 24,z 34 s, defined by six equations of the form and three equations of the form z ik z il y j `z jk z jl y i z ij v ij v ij v ik z 2 ily j y k z 2 jky i y l, where z ij z ji, v ij v ji, and v ij v kl. In fact, we are not working with the full universal torsor. We need the following lemma, which is essentially a restatement of Lemma in Heath-Brown [7].
8 8 YUCHAO WANG Lemma 2. Let rxs P U 0 be a primitive integral solution. Then either x or x takes the form x z 2 z 3 z 4 y 2 y 3 y 4, x 2 z 2 z 23 z 24 y y 3 y 4, x 3 z 3 z 23 z 34 y y 2 y 4, x 4 z 4 z 24 z 34 y y 2 y 3, with non-zero integer variables y i and positive integer variables z ij constrained by the conditions gcdpy i,y j q, gcdpy i,z ij q, gcdpz ab,z cd q, for ta, bu, tc, du distinct, and satisfying the equation z 23 z 24 z 34 y `z 3 z 4 z 34 y 2 `z 2 z 4 z 24 y 3 `z 2 z 3 z 23 y 4 0. Moreover, none of z 23 z 24 z 34 y ` z 3 z 4 z 34 y 2, z 23 z 24 z 34 y ` z 2 z 4 z 24 y 3 or z 23 z 24 z 34 y ` z 2 z 3 z 23 y 4 may vanish. Conversely, if y i and z ij are as above, then the vector x taking the above form, will be a primitive integral solution lying on U The proof of the theorem Recall that rξs P U 0. Thus we get ξ ξ 2 ξ 3 ξ 4 0, and ξ k `ξ l 0 for k l. Now fix? 3 ξ ξ 2 ξ 3 ξ 3? 4 ξ ξ 2 ξ 3 ξ 4 η j, βj sgn, ξ j for j,2,3,4. Then we obtain that η, η 2, η 3 and η 4 are positive numbers, satisfying β k η k `β l η l 0, for k l, and β η `β 2 η 2 `β 3 η 3 `β 4 η 4 0. By Lemma 2, we obtain that for sufficiently large B, there exists a suitable positive constant c, such that there are at least cbplogbq 7 solutions to the equation ξ j β p `β 2 p 2 `β 3 p 3 `β 4 p 4 0, with p j P I j. Among these solutions, there are at most OpB 2 3 plogbq 2 q ones with µpp p 2 p 3 p 4 q 0. Thus we still have at least c BplogBq 7 solutions satisfying µpp p 2 p 3 p 4 q 0, where c is a positive constant. In Lemma 3, we fix z 2 z 3 z 4 z 23 z 24 z 34. Then the relations become y `y 2 `y 3 `y 4 0, gcdpy i,y j q,
9 THE SATURATION NUMBER FOR CAYLEY S CUBIC SURFACE 9 and none if y `y 2, y `y 3 or y `y 4 may vanish. We also have x y 2 y 3 y 4, x 2 y y 3 y 4, x 3 y y 2 y 4, x 4 y y 2 y 3. Now we set y j β j p j. Thus we obtain x i 4ź β j p j. j j i Obviously, we get x P Z 4 prim, rxs P U 0 and x primitive. For x, we have x B β 2β 3 β 4 η 2 η 3 η 4! plogbq. Note that β 2 β 3 β 4 η 2 η 3 η 4 ξ, then x B ξ! plogbq. Arguing similarly as above, we get x B ξ! plogbq. Thus the proof is concluded. References [] V.V.BatyrevandYu.
