arxiv:5.038v6 [math.nt] 6 May 207 An alternative proof of the Dirichlet prime number theorem Haifeng Xu May 7, 207 Abstract Dirichlet s theorem on arithmetic progressions called as Dirichlet prime number theorem is a classical result in number theory. Atle Selberg[] gave an elementary proof of this theorem. In this article we give an alternative proof of it based on a previous result of us. Also we get an estimation of the prime counting function in the special cases. MSC200: A4. Keywords: Dirichlet prime number theorem, prime counting function, periodicity and mirror symmetry of the pattern. Definitions and some basic facts recalled For the details of the notations, definitions and theorems in this section please refer to the paper [2]. Let tp,p 2,...,p n,...u be the set of all primes, where p n denotes the n-th prime number. πpx is the number of primes which are less than or eual to x. N is the set of positive numbers. Let M pn N t2k,3k,5k,...,p n k k P Nu, and D pn be the set of difference of two consecutive numbers in M pn, that is, D pn td k d k x k` x k,x i P M pn u, where x i is the i-th number in M pn. We call the minimum subset P pn occurs periodically in D pn as the pattern of D pn. The number of elements in the pattern P pn is called the period of D pn. We write it as T pn and it is T pn p2 p3 p5 pp n. 2 Note that it is also the number of elements of D pn. The length of the pattern P pn is defined as the sum of the elements in the pattern. WewriteitasLpP pn, anditiseualto ś n. Itisalsorelatedtothe last element in Mp p0 n. Here Mp p0 n denotes the first block of M pn corresponding to P pn (just like M p0 7 in Figure ). In fact, the last element in Mp p0 n is `LpP pn. A useful observation is that the number of the elements in Mp p0 n can be computed as follows: p p p p 2 p p m p T pm. It shows the relation with the zeta function ζps in case of s. Theorem.. The gap seuence except the last element in the pattern is mirror symmetric. Corollory.2. The last element in every pattern P pn is 2. Theorem.3. (i) The multiplicities of skips 2 and 4 are always same and odd. In fact, it is eual to p3 2 p5 2 pp k 2 for D pk. (ii) The central gas always 4, and the multiplicities of all gaps except 2 and 4 are even. Proposition.4. The numbers in the set are consecutive primes. t P M pn p n ă ă p n p n`, p 2 nu In this paper, we always write logx to stand for lnx. 2 Dirichlet s theorem We will use the Erdős estimate about Chebyshev s ineuality to prove Dirichlet s theorem. Lemma 2. (Chebyshev). There are two positive constant c ď ď c 2, such that x c logx ă πpx ă c x 2 logx holds for all x ě N for some positive integer N. If set N 2, then we can choose c 3 log2, and c 2 6log2. Erdős [3] proved the following ineuality in 932. Lemma 2.2 (Erdős). for all x ě 3. plog2 x x ă πpx ă p2log2 logx logx, 2
The original proof by Dirichlet in 837 used the characters of finite abelian groups and L-seires. In this section we give an alternative method to prove the theorem of Dirichlet. Theorem 2.3 (Dirichlet, 837 [4, 5]). For any two positive coprime integers a and d, there are infinitely many primes of the form a ` nd, where n is a non-negative integer. Proof. First, for the convenience, we just copy the figure from [2] here M p M p M p Figure : Obtain M 7 from M 5 by deleting the 7h, h P M Figure 2: M 7 We look at the columns of Figure 2, LpP Thus, the columns consist the arithmetic progressions: x ik a i ` pk 20, where a i P M p0 7 t,3,7,9,23,29,3,37,4,43,47,...,209,2u. 3
First, there exists at least one number a i0 P M p0 7 such that the set tx i0k x i0k a i0 `pk 20u contains infinitely many primes since there are infinitely many primes. Suppose that all a j P M p0 7 except a i0 such that each set tx jk x jk a j ` pk 20u contains finite primes. That is for k ą K large enough, the number x jk a j `pk 20is alwaysa composite number. Let L ai0 denote the column or line where the set tx i0k x i0k a i0 ` pk 20u is located in Figure 2. Choose a prime p m on the line L ai0 satisfying p m ą a i0 `20pK. Then by Proposition.4, the first several items in M pm will not contain the gap (or skip) 2. But every pattern P pm has skip 2. In fact by Theorem.3, there are p3 2p5 2p7 2 pp m 2 gaps of skip 2 in P pm. We can choose some of the corresponding pair of composite numbers in P pm which are located in the adjacent two columns denoted by L u and L v. Here u,v P M p0 7 and v u 2. Note that there are 5 p3 2p5 2p7 2 gaps of 2 in D 7. And the same number of gap 4 in D 7. Hence, we can assume that L u and L v are not the column passing through a i0. Since every two odd composite numbers with gap 2 are coprime, the elements at the same level of L u and L v (i.e., they are the form like u `20pk s and v `20pk s ) have different prime divisors. Hence, without loss of generality, we can choose L u and L v such that on them there are at least N : j p3 2p5 2p7 2 pp m 2 5 pairs of composite numbers with gap 2 in Mp p0 m. Each pair of such composite numbers have at least four distinct prime divisors. In the Figure 3, is a central position (not a number) in Mp p0 m. For the pairs of red points in the figure, they only can be eliminated by the primes in the set tp m`,p m`2,...,p m`k u. Here p m`k is the largest prime less than a X{2, and X `LpP pn ` śm is the last number in M p0 p m.? X{2 20 pair of red points with skip 2 on the lines L u There are at least N and L v. They should be eliminated by these primes p m`,p m`2,...,p m`k. During the process of the elimination by the primes, we should take into account the composite numbers with same prime divisors. Note that the largest value of the red points is greater or eual than 20 ˆ 5 a X{2 p 2 20 ` ax{2 4 p 2. () Thus we should have the following ineuality 4 p 2 p p p ď πpx m. (2) p m` p m`2 p m`k 4
2 L u L v M pm m` p m`2. a p m`k ă X{2 X Figure 3: Here is the center of the M p0 p m 5
Note that the left hand side 4 p 2 i m` p 28 2 ź m`k p 28 p m`k ź p ą 4 p 4 p By Merten s estimates[6] in Lemma 3., we have p p 4 p p p i p i e γ e γ 4pX `Op `Op logp m logp m logp m`k logp m`k e γ e γ ą3x logp m logp m`k 3 X ą e 2γ logp m log a X{2 26 X ą e 2γ logp m logx. It will violate the ineuality (2) if the prime number p m satisfies 26 e 2γ logp m ě 2log2 due to the ineuality (2.2). Note that e γ « [7]. Let p m ď e 5.9 «365.04, then we will have 26 e 2γ logp m ą 2log2. If p m ą e 5.9, we change M 7 to some M pn with longer period. Then the coefficient in () will be ś n { ś n p 2. Next we follow the same arguments. In detail, euation () becomes ˆ a ś X{2 n ś n pp p 2 ś i 2 n `ax{2 p p i ś n i p 2 p 2. And (2) becomes ś n ś n p 2 pp i 2 p p p ď πpx m. (3) p m` p m`2 p m`k 6
The left hand side becomes ś n p i ś n p 2 p ą i m` p m`k 2 ź p p i p m`k ź p p By Merten s estimates, we have 2 2 ąp2 ąp2 ą 2p2 ś n 2 p e γ px 2 2 X p logp m ˆ e 2γ logp m logp m`k 2 X e 2γ logp m 2 e 2γ logp m p `Op logp m log a X{2 X logx : α X logx. p p. e γ ˆ logp m`k Claim. For this p m, there exists a number n with p n ă p m, such that 2p2 2 ą p2log2 e2γ logp m. That is, α ą 2log2. Hence, if denote the left hand side of (3) as LHS, then X LHS ą p2log2 logx ą πpx, `Op logp m`k which violates the ineuality (3). Thus our assumption is wrong. Note that here we work on the table of M pn similar with Figure 2 and Figure 3. Hence, there exists at least another a j0 7
such that the set tx j0k x j0k a j0 ` pk ś n u contains infinitely many primes. In fact by above argument we have proved that each line of the pair L u and L v with gap 2 or 4 in the table about M pn contains infinitely many primes. Obviously, it infers that each line of the pair L u and L v with gap 2 or 4 in the table about M 7 (see Figure 3) contains infinitely many primes. And it also true that for the table of M 3 and M 5. Therefore, since the bigger gap such as 6 comes from add 2 and 4, we conclude that the pair lines L u and L v with gap 6 also both contains infinitely many primes. Therefore, every column tx jk x jk a j ` pk ś n u (the j-th column) contains infinitely many primes. Here n,2,3,... By using the same idea, we can prove that if fix one of rows of the block M 7 in Figure 2, then the set tx in x in a i `npk 0 20, n,2,3,...u (4) also contains infinitely many primes. For the general arithmetic progression A : tak ` d k P Nu, pa,d. First we can choose suitable p k such that d or ah `d belongs the set M pk for some h. Then fix this p k, considering the similar rectangle as Figure 2. We consider the subset tap k `d k,2,...u. Thus it contains infinitely many primes. It completes the proof of the theorem of Dirichlet. 3 Estimation of the prime counting function in special cases In M p0 p m, there are T pm elements in it. Then after deleting the numbers of the form h, i m `,m ` 2,...,m ` K, the left are all prime numbers. Here we assume p m`k is the largest prime number which is less than or eual to X : LpP pm ` śm. Hence we have πpx m ě T pm p p p p m` p m`2 p m`k ś m`k p p p i ś m p p i m`k ź p p i 8
Recall the Euler s product formula for zeta function 8ÿ ζps n s ź p s. n p prime For the case s, we will use the following lemma. Lemma 3. (Merten s estimates[6]). ź p e γ ˆ p `Op logx logx, pďx where γ is Euler s constant. Lemma 3.2. For any positive integer N, we have the ineuality logp `N ă Nÿ n Hence, by the above lemmas, we have πpx ě n ă `logn. m`k ź p p i `m On the other hand, it is easy to see that e γ ˆ px `Op logx logx `m. πpx ď T pm 2 p p p p m` p m`2 p m`k ź 2 m`k Therefore, we have e γ X ˆ `Op logx logx p p i `m e γ ˆ 2pX `Op logx logx `m. `m ď πpx ď 2 e γ X ˆ logx Since e m ă `p p 2 p m X, m ă logx. Thus we have πpx X logx, where X `p p 2 p m. `Op logx `m. Therefore, we get an ineuality of prime counting function like the Chebyshev s ineuality.
