Under certain condition, we give an etimate from above on the number of differential equation of order r+1 with precribed regular ingular point, precribed exponent at ingular point, and having a quai-polynomial flag of olution. The etimate i given in term of a uitable weight ubpace of the tenor power U(n ) (n 1), where n i the number of ingular point in C and U(n ) i the enveloping algebra of the nilpotent ubalgebra of gl r+1. Dedicated to Akold Khovankii on the occaion of hi 60 th birthday. Conider the differential equation 1. Introduction F(x) u (x) + G(x) u (x) + H(x) u(x) = 0, where F(x) i a polynomial of degree n, and G(x), H(x) are polynomial of degree not greater than n 1, n 2, repectively. If F(x) ha no multiple root, then all ingular point of the equation are regular ingular. Write (2) F(x) = n (x z ), G(x) F(x) = n m x z for uitable complex number m, z. Then 0 and m +1 are exponent at z of equation (1). If l i one of the exponent at, then the other i l 1 n m. 2 2 E. MUKHIN, V. TARASOV, AND A. VARCHENKO (a) find a polynomial H(x) of degree at mot n 2 uch that equation (1) ha a polynomial olution of degree l ; (b) find the number of olution to Problem (a). If H(x), u(x) i a olution to Problem (a), then the correponding equation (1) i called a Lame equation and the polynomial u(x) i called a Lame function. Example. Let F(x) = 1 x 2, G(x) = α β +(α+β +2)x. Then H = l(l+α+β +1) and the correponding polynomial olution of degree l, normalized by the condition u(1) = ( ) l+α (α,β) l, i called the Jacobi polynomial and denoted by P l (x). The following reult i claical. of mul- Theorem 1.1 (Cf. [Sz], Ch. 6.8, [St]). Let u(x) be a polynomial olution of (1) of degree l with root t 0 1,...,t 0 l tiplicity one. Then t 0 = (t 0 1,..., t0 l ) i a critical point of the function l n Φ l,n (t; z; m) = (t i z ) m (t i t ) 2, 1 i< l where z = (z 1,...,z n ) and m = (m 1,...,m n ). Let t 0 be a critical point of the function Φ l,n ( ; z; m), then the polynomial u(x) of degree l with root t 0 1,...,t0 l i a olution of (1) with H(x) = ( F(x)u (x) G(x)u (x))/u(x) being a polynomial of degree at mot n 2. The function Φ l,n ( ; z; m) i called the mater function. The mater function i a ymmetric function of the variable t 1,..., t l. Therefore, the ymmetric group S l naturally act on the et of critical point of the mater function by permuting the coordinate. By Theorem 1.1, the S l -orbit of critical point are in one-to-one correpondence with olution H(x), u(x) of Problem (a) uch that u(x) ha no multiple root. The following reult i alo claical. Theorem 1.2 ( Cf. [Sz], Ch. 6.8, [H], [St] ). If z 1,...,z n are ditinct real number and m 1,...,m n are negative number, then the number of olution to Problem (a) i equal to ( ) l+n 2 l. Under thee condition on z and m, the mater function ha exactly ( ) l+n 2 Sl -orbit l of critical point, ee [Sz] and [V3]. The number ( ) l+n 2 l ha the following repreentation theoretical interpretation. The univeral enveloping algebra U(n ) of the nilpotent ubalgebra n gl 2 i generated by one element e 21 and i weighted by power of the generator. The number ( ) l+n 2 l i the dimenion of the weight l part of the tenor power U(n ) (n 1).
HIGHER LAME EQUATIONS AND CRITICAL POINTS 3 The cae of nonnegative integer m 1,...,m n i intereting for application to the Bethe anatz method in the Gaudin model. For a nonnegative integer m, let L m be the m + 1-dimenional irreducible l 2 -module. If m 1,...,m n are nonnegative integer and m = n m 2l i a nonnegative integer, then for any ditinct z 1,...,z n the number of S l -orbit of critical point of the mater function function Φ l,n ( ; z; m) i not greater than the multiplicity of the l 2 -module L m in the tenor product n L m. Moreover, for generic z 1,...,z n, the number of S l -orbit i equal to that multiplicity, ee [ScV]. The goal of thi paper i to generalize the formulated reult. We conider linear differential equation of order r+1 with regular ingular point only, located at z 1,...,z n,, and having precribed exponent at each of the ingular point. We introduce the notion of a quai-polynomial flag of olution for uch a differential equation. (For a econd order differential equation, a quai-polynomial flag i ut a olution of the form y(x) n (x z ) λ where y(x) i a polynomial and λ 1,...,λ n are ome complex number.) We prove two fact: Differential equation with a quai-polynomial flag, precribed ingular point and exponent are in one-to-one correpondence with uitable orbit of critical point of ome gl r+1 -mater function. Under explicit generic condition on exponent (they mut be eparated), we how that the number of orbit of critical point of the correponding mater function i not greater than the dimenion of a uitable weight ubpace of U(n ) (n 1), where n i the nilpotent ubalgebra of gl r+1. The proof are baed on reult from [MV2, BMV]. Thi paper wa motivated by dicuion with B. Shapiro of hi preprint [BBS] in which another generalization of Problem (a) and (b) i introduced for differential equation of order r + 1. The author thank B. Shapiro for ueful dicuion of hi preprint. 2. Critical point of gl r+1 -mater function 2.1. Lie algebra gl r+1. Conider the Lie algebra gl r+1 with tandard generator e a,b, a, b = 1,..., r + 1, and Cartan decompoition gl r+1 = n h n +, n = a>b C e a,b, h = r+1 a=1 C e a,a, n + = a<b C e a,b. Set h a = e a,a e a+1,a+1 for a = 1,..., r. Let e 1,1,...,e r+1,r+1 h be the bai dual to the bai e 1,1,...,e r+1,r+1 h. Set α a = e a,a e a+1,a+1 for a = 1,..., r. Fix the calar product on h uch that (e a,a, e b,b ) = δ a,b. Let U(n ) be the univeral enveloping algebra of n, U(n ) = l Z r 0 U(n )[l],
4 E. MUKHIN, V. TARASOV, AND A. VARCHENKO where for l = (l 1,...,l r ), the pace U(n )[l] conit of element f uch that r [f, h] = h, l i α i f. The element i e a i,b i with a i > b i belong to the graded ubpace U(n ) [l], where l = i l i with l i = (0, 0,..., 0, 1 b, 1 b+1,..., 1 a 1, 0, 0,..., 0). Chooe an order on the et of element e a,b with r + 1 a > b 1. Then the ordered product a>b en a,b a,b form a graded bai of U(n ). The grading of U(n ) induce the grading of U(n ) k for any poitive integer k, Denote U(n ) k = l U(n ) k [l]. d(k, l) = dim U(n ) k [l]. For a weight Λ h, denote by L Λ the irreducible gl r+1 -module with highet weight Λ. Let Λ = (Λ 1,...,Λ n ), Λ h, be a collection of weight and l = (l 1,...,l r ) a collection of nonnegative integer. Let L Λ = L Λ1 L Λn be the tenor product of irreducible gl r+1 -module. Let L Λ = l Z r 0 L Λ [l] be it weight decompoition, where L Λ [(l 1,...,l r )] i the ubpace of vector of weight n Λ r l iα i. Let Sing L Λ [l] L Λ [l] be the ubpace of ingular vector, i.e. the ubpace of vector annihilated by n +. Denote δ(λ, l) = dim Sing L Λ [l]. It i well-known that for given l and a generic et of weight Λ, we have d(n 1, l) = δ(λ, l). For given Λ and l, introduce the weight n Λ = Λ r l i α i h and the equence of number m 1,...,m r+1, m, where m = { m,1,...,m,r+1 } and m,i = Λ, e i,i. Having equence m 1,...,m r+1, m, we can recover Λ and l a follow: r+1 r n (3) Λ = m,i e i,i and l i α i = Λ Λ.
HIGHER LAME EQUATIONS AND CRITICAL POINTS 5 We ay that the et of equence m 1,..., m r+1, m of complex number i admiible, if all of the number l = (l 1,..., l r ), defined by (3), are nonnegative integer Mater function. Let z = (z 1,..., z n ) C n be a point with ditinct coordinate. Let Λ = (Λ 1,...,Λ n ), Λ h, be a collection of gl r+1 -weight and l = (l 1,...,l r ) a collection of nonnegative integer. Set l = l l r. Introduce a function of l variable by the formula (4) Φ(t; z;λ; l) = r l i n = =1 (t (i) t = (t (1) 1,...,t (1) l 1,...,t (r) 1,...,t (r) l r ) z ) (Λ,α i) r (t (i) 1 < l i r 1 t (i) )2 l i l i+1 (t (i) =1 k=1 t (+1) k ) 1. The function Φ i a (multi-valued) function of t, depending on parameter z,λ. The function i called the mater function. The mater function arie in the hypergeometric olution of the KZ equation [?, V1] and in the Bethe anatz method for the Gaudin model [RV, ScV, MV1, MV2, MV3, V2, MTV]. The product of ymmetric group S l = S l1 S lr act on variable t by permuting the coordinate with the ame upper index. The mater function i S l -invariant. A point t with complex coordinate i called a critical point of Φ( ; z;λ; l) if the following ytem of l equation i atified (5) n (Λ, α i ) z t (i) n (Λ, α 1 ) z l i, t (1) t (i) 2 t (i) n (Λ, α r ) z t (r) + l 1, l i 1 l r, t (i) t (r) 2 t (1) t (1) 1 t (i 1) 2 t (r) l 2 l i+1 l r 1 t (i) t (r) 1 t (1) t (2) 1 t (i+1) 1 t (r 1) = 0, = 0, = 0, where = 1,..., l 1 in the firt group of equation, i = 2,...,r 1 and = 1,..., l i in the econd group of equation, = 1,...,l r in the lat group of equation.
6 E. MUKHIN, V. TARASOV, AND A. VARCHENKO In other word, a point t i a critical point if ( ) 1 Φ Φ (t; z;λ; l) = 0, i = 1,...,r, = 1,...l t (i) i. In the Gaudin model, equation (5) are called the Bethe anatz equation. The et of critical point i S l -invariant The cae of iolated critical point. We ay that the pair Λ, l i eparating if r r r (2Λ + c i α i, c i α i ) + 2 c i 0 for all et of integer {c 1,..., c r } uch that 0 c i l i, i c i 0. For example, if Λ i dominant integral, then Λ, l i eparating. Lemma 2.1 (Theorem 16 [ScV], Lemma 2.1 [MV2]). If the pair Λ, l i eparating, then the et of critical point of the mater function Φ( ; z;λ; l) i finite. By Lemma 2.1, for given l and generic Λ, the mater function Φ( ; z;λ; l) ha finitely many critical point. Theorem 2.2. Aume that the pair Λ, l i eparating, then the number of S l -orbit of critical point counted with multiplicitie i not greater than d(n 1, l). The multiplicity of a critical point t i the multiplicity of t a a olution of ytem (5). Proof. It i hown in [BMV] that, if Λ 1,...,Λ n, Λ i a collection of dominant integral weight, then the number of S l -orbit of critical point counted with multiplicitie i not greater than δ(λ, l). Together with equality d(n 1, l) = d(λ, l) for generic Λ, thi prove the theorem. 3. Differential operator with quai-polynomial flag of olution 3.1. Fundamental differential operator. For the S l -orbit of a critical point t of the mater function Φ( ; z;λ; l), define the tuple y t = (y 1,...,y r ) of polynomial in variable x, y i (x) = l i =1 (x t (i) ), i = 1,...,r. Since t i a critical point, all fraction in (5) are well-defined. Therefore, the tuple y t ha the following propertie: (6) (7) (8) Every polynomial y i ha no multiple root. Every pair of polynomial y i and y i+1 ha no common root. For every i = 1,...,r and = 1,...,n, if m,i m,i+1 0, then y i (z ) 0.
HIGHER LAME EQUATIONS AND CRITICAL POINTS 7 A tuple of monic polynomial (y 1,...,y r ) with propertie (6)-(8) will be called off-diagonal. Define quai-polynomial T 1,...,T r+1 in x by the formula n T i (x) = (x z ) m,i (9). Conider the linear differential operator of order r + 1, D t = ( d dx ln ( T r+1 y r dx ln ( y rt r y r 1 ))...( d dx ln ( y 2T 2 y 1 dx ln (y 1 T 1 )) where ln (f) denote (df/dx)/f for any f. We ay that D t i the fundamental operator of the critical point t. Theorem 3.1. Aume that the pair Λ, l i eparating. Then (i) All ingular point of D t are regular and lie in z 1,...,z n,. The exponent of D t at z are m,1, m,2 + 1,..., m,r+1 + r for = 1,...,n, and the exponent of D t at are m,1, m,2 1,..., m,r+1 r. (ii) The differential equation D t u = 0 ha olution u 1,...,u r+1 uch that and for i = 2,...,r + 1 we have u 1 = y 1 T 1 Wr (u 1,..., u i ) = y i T i T i 1... T 1 where Wr(u 1,...,u i ) denote the Wronkian of u 1,...,u i and y r+1 = 1. Proof. Part (ii) follow from the preentation of D t a a product. To prove part (i) conider the operator D t = T1 1 D t T 1, the conugate of D t by the operator of multiplication by T 1. Then D t = ( d dx ln ( T r+1 y r T 1 dx ln ( y rt r y r 1 T 1 ))...( d dx ln ( y 2T 2 y 1 T 1 dx ln (y 1 )). It i enough to how that (iii) All ingular point of Dt are regular and lie in {z 1,...,z n, }. (iv) The exponent of Dt at z are 0, m,1 m,2 + 1,..., m,1 m,r+1 + r, for = 1,...,n, and the exponent of Dt at are l 1, m,1 + m,2 1 l 1,..., m,1 + m,r+1 r l 1.
8 E. MUKHIN, V. TARASOV, AND A. VARCHENKO If all highet weight in the collection Λ 1,..., Λ n, Λ are integral dominant, then tatement (iii-iv) are proved in [MV2], Section 5. Hence tatement (iii-iv) hold for arbitrary eparating Λ 1,...,Λ n, l Quai-polynomial flag. Let z = (z 1,...,z n ) C n be a point with ditinct coordinate. Let m 1,...,m r+1, m be an admiible et of equence of complex number a in Section 2.1. Let D = dr+1 dx r+1 + A 1(x) dr dx r A r (x) d dx + A r+1(x) be a differential operator with rational coefficient. We ay that D i aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m, if All ingular point of D are regular and lie in z 1,...,z n,. The exponent of D at z are m,1, m,2 +1,..., m,r+1 +r for = 1,...,n. The exponent of D at are m,1, m,2 1,..., m,r+1 r. Define quai-polynomial T 1,...,T r+1 in x by formula (9). We ay that an operator D, aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m, ha a quaipolynomial flag, if there exit a tuple y = (y 1,..., y r ) of monic polynomial in x, uch that (i) For i = 1,..., r, deg y i = l i. (ii) The tuple y i off-diagonal in the ene of (6)-(8). (iii) The differential equation D u = 0 ha olution u 1,...,u r+1 uch that and for i = 2,..., r + 1 we have where y r+1 = 1. u 1 = y 1 T 1 Wr(u 1,...,u i ) = y i T i T i 1... T 1, Propoition 3.2. An operator D, aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m, ha a quaipolynomial flag if and only there exit a tuple y = (y 1,...,y r ) of monic polynomial in x with propertie (i-ii) and (iv) The differential operator D can be preented in the form D = ( d dx ln ( T r+1 y r dx ln ( y rt r y r 1 ))...( d dx ln ( y 2T 2 y 1 dx ln (y 1 T 1 )). Proof. The equivalence of (iii) and (iv) follow from the next lemma. Lemma 3.3. Let u 1,...,u r+1 be any function uch that Wr (u 1,...,u i ) = y i T i T i 1... T 1,
HIGHER LAME EQUATIONS AND CRITICAL POINTS 9 for i = 1,...,r + 1. Then u 1,...,u r+1 form a bai of the pace of olution of the equation Du = 0 with D = ( d dx ln ( T r+1 y r dx ln ( y rt r y r 1 ))...( d dx ln ( y 2T 2 y 1 dx ln (y 1 T 1 )). Proof. It i enough to prove that D u i = 0 for i = 1,..., r + 1. By induction on i, we obtain that ( d dx ln ( y it i ))...( d y i 1 dx ln ( y 2T 2 y 1 dx ln (y 1 T 1 )) u = W(u 1,..., u i, u) y i T i T i 1... T 1 from which the tatement follow. Example of differential operator with quai-polynomial flag are given by Theorem 3.1. If t i a critical point of the mater function Φ( ; z;λ; l), then by Theorem 3.1, the fundamental differential operator D t i aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m and ha a quai-polynomial flag. Having z, m 1,...,m r+1, m, define Λ, l by (3) and the mater function Φ( ; z;λ; l) by (4). Having a tuple y = (y 1,...,y r ), y i (x) = l i =1 (x t(i) ), denote by (10) t = (t (1) 1,...,t(1) l 1,...,t (r) 1,...,t(r) l r ) a point in C l, whoe coordinate are root of the polynomial of y. The tuple y uniquely determine the S l -orbit of t. Theorem 3.4. Aume that an operator D i aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m and ha a quai-polynomial flag. Let y be the correponding tuple of polynomial. Then the point t, introduced in (10), i a critical point of the mater function Φ( ; z;λ; l). Proof. Let u 1,...,u r+1 be the et of olution of the differential equation D u = 0 giving the quai-polynomial flag. Introduce the function ỹ 1,...,ỹ r by the formula u 2 = ỹ 1 T 1 and for i = 2,...,r, ỹ i T i T i 1... T 1 = Wr (u 1,...,u i 1, u i+1 ). The function ỹ 1,...,ỹ r are multi-valued function. Singularitie of all branche of all of thee function lie in z 1,...,z n. It follow from the Wronkian identitie of [MV2], that Wr(ỹ 1, y 1 ) = T 2 T 1 y 2, Wr (ỹ r, y r ) = T r+1 T r y r 1, Wr (ỹ i, y i ) = T i+1 T i y i 1 y i+1
10 E. MUKHIN, V. TARASOV, AND A. VARCHENKO for i = 2,...,r 1. Thee two propertie of function ỹ 1,...,ỹ r imply equation (5) for root of polynomial y 1,...,y r, ee [MV2]. Thi how that the point t i a critical point. The correpondence between critical point and differential operator with quaipolynomial flag i reflexive. If t i a critical point of the mater function Φ( ; z; Λ; l), which correpond by Theorem 3.4 to the differential operator D, then D i the fundamental differential operator of the critical point t Concluion. Let z = (z 1,...,z n ) C n be a point with ditinct coordinate. Let m 1,...,m r+1, m be an admiible et of equence of complex number a in Section 2.1. Define Λ 1,...,Λ n, Λ, l by (3). Aume that l i fixed and Λ 1,...,Λ n are eparating (that i generic). Then the number of differential operator D, aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m and having a quai-polynomial flag, i not greater than d(n 1, l), ee Theorem 2.2 and 3.4. It i intereting to note that if Λ 1,...,Λ n, Λ, are dominant integral, then the number of differential operator D, aociated with z, m 1,...,m r+1, m and having a quaipolynomial flag, i not greater than the multiplicity δ(λ, l), which could be a maller number.
