2018 Senior External Examination Physics Paper Two Question book Thursday 1 November :15 pm to 3:25 pm Time allowed Perusal time: 10 minutes Working time: 2 hours Examination materials provided Paper Two Question book Paper Two Response book Paper Two Resource book Equipment allowed QCAA-approved equipment ruler graduated in millimetres non-programmable calculator graphing calculator Paper Two is an open-book examination. You may refer to any paper-based material that you have brought into the examination room. Directions Do not write during perusal time. Paper Two has six questions that assess complex reasoning processes. Attempt all questions. Assessment Paper Two assesses the following assessment criterion: Complex reasoning processes Assessment standards are at the end of this book. After the examination session The supervisor will collect this book when you leave.

Planning space

Complex reasoning process Paper Two has six questions. Atttempt all questions. Write your responses in the response book. Show all working. Question 1 The circuit diagrams below (circuit A and circuit B) each contain three different resistors: R1, R2 and R3. R1 has the same value in both circuits, as do R2 and R3. The reading on the ammeters in the circuits are A1 = 13.3 A, A2 = 5.00 A, A3 = 18.3 A and A4 = 1.67 A. Determine possible values of R1, R2 and R3 that can be applied to both circuits. 1

Question 2 A mass of 10 kg is placed onto an inclined plane as shown below. Given a frictional force directed against the motion of the mass of 15 N, how long does it take to reach the bottom of the slope? 2 m 45 Question 3 A bow with spring constant of 400 N/m is drawn (stretched) 0.5 m before launching an arrow with a mass of 0.05 kg straight up. Find the maximum height reached by the arrow. Question 4 Two motors, A and B, are rated at 500 W each. They are used to pull a mass of 500 kg vertically into the air and are attached to the mass via a pulley system as shown below. Not drawn to scale A 500 kg B What is the minimum time the motors could take to lift the mass 5 metres vertically? Assume that the angle the ropes make with the mass does not change significantly over this time. Question 5 5 A rocket has a mass of kg, which includes kg of fuel. It expels gases from its engines at a velocity of 5000 ms 1 at a rate of 100 kg s 1 until its fuel supply is exhausted. Assuming the rocket is in space and not significantly influenced by gravitational fields, what is its average acceleration during the time of engine operation? 2

Question 6 A light ray strikes a homogeneous rectangular block of glass of thickness w at an angle i as indicated in the diagram below. The glass block is surrounded by air. The ray emerges at point B at an angle i'. NA and NB represent the normal lines at the points of entry and exit of the block. i. Provide a mathematical justification that shows the incident and the emerging rays are parallel. ii. Given that the refractive index of air (n 1 ) is 1.0, the refractive index of glass (n 2 ) is 1.55, w = 3.0 cm, i' = 32, calculate the length of the line OB. End of Paper Two 3

Assessment standards from the Physics Senior External Syllabus 2000 (amended 2003) Paper Two Criteria Very High Achievement High Achievement Sound Achievement Limited Achievement Very Limited Achievement Complex reasoning processes A high ability to use complex reasoning in challenging situations involving the candidate s understanding of subject matter and a high ability to use scientific processes at an advanced level. Competence in using complex reasoning in challenging situations involving the candidate s understanding of subject matter and competence in using scientific processes at an advanced level. Some success in using complex reasoning in challenging situations involving the candidate s understanding of subject matter and some success in using scientific processes at an advanced level. 4
