We develop he concep of a Cheeger deformaion on he conex of fiber bundles wih compac srucure group. This procedure is used o provide merics wih posiive Ricci curvaure on he oal space of such bundles, generalizing he resuls in Nash [10] and Poor [11]. 1. Inroducion The meric deformaion known as Cheeger deformaion was firsly inroduced on [3]. Is main goal was o produce merics wih non-negaive secional curvaure on manifolds wih symmeries. Since hen, Cheeger deformaions were used in [6, 5] o produce new examples of manifolds wih non-negaive and posiive secional curvaure; in [12, 13, 7] o sudy curvaure properies on homogeneous spaces and biquoiens and on [14] o lif posiive Ricci curvaure from a meric quoien M/G o M. On he oher hand Nash [10] and Poor [11] proved ha he oal space of some classes of fiber bundles admi merics of posiive Ricci curvaure: for insance, linear sphere bundles, vecor bundles and principal bundles over manifolds wih posiive Ricci curvaure. In paricular, heir resuls provide merics of posiive Ricci curvaure on exoic spheres. The main idea of he presen paper is o esablish an analogous o he Cheeger deformaion on a specific class of merics on fiber bundles. We use such deformaion o unify and exend he works of Nash [10] and Poor [11], providing posiive Ricci curvaure on a broader class of fiber bundles: Theorem 1.1. Le F M π B be a fiber bundle from a compac manifold M wih fiber F, compac srucure group G and base B. Suppose ha (1) B has a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure, addresses: ( ) ra136503@ime.unicamp.br, ( ) speranca@unifesp.br. Key words and phrases. 2 2 A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS (2) The principal orbi of he G-acion on F has finie fundamenal group, (3) F has a G-invarian meric such ha F/G, wih he orbi disance meric, has Ric F/G 1. Then M carries a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure. For he exposiion, we follow [9, 16], inroducing a suiable reparamerizaion of 2-planes and a non-decreasing formula for he deformed secional curvaure (see (3.1)). The class of admissible merics for he presen deformaion includes any submersion meric whose fibers merically are homogeneous spaces wih respec o he srucure group (which is assumed o be compac). On Secion 2 we recall he basic conceps and noaion of Cheeger deformaions following [16]. On Secion 3 we inroduce he new deformaion and prove Theorem Cheeger deformaions Here we quickly recall he procedure according o Ziller [17] and M. Müer [9]. Le (M,g) be a Riemannian manifold wih an isomeric G-acion, where G is a compac Lie group and Q is a biinvarian meric on g, he Lie algebra of G. For each poin p M he orbi Gp hrough p is a submanifold of M saisfying Gp = G / G p, where G p is he isoropy subgroup of he G-acion a p. Le m p be he Q-orhogonal complemen of g p, he Lie algebra of G p. Observe ha m p is isomorphic o he angen space o he orbi Gp. The isomorphism is induced by compuing acion fields: given an elemen U g, define Up = d e U p. d =0 The map U Up is a linear morphism whose kernel is g p. We call he angen space T p Gp as he verical space a p, V p, and is orhogonal complemen, H p, as he horizonal space. A angen vecor X T p M can be uniquely decomposed as X = X +Up, where X is horizonal and U m p. The main idea in he Cheeger deformaion is o consider he produc manifold M G, observing ha he acion (1) r(p,g) := (rp,gr 1 ) is free and isomeric for he produc meric g 1 Q, > 0. Is quoien space is diffeomorphic o M since he projecion π : M G M (p,g) gp is a principal bundle for acion (1). I induces a family of merics g on M. Nex, we define useful ensors: (1) The orbi ensor a p is he linear map P : m p m p defined by g(u,v ) = Q(PU,V), U,V V p (2) For each > 0 we define P : m p m p as g (U,V ) = Q(P U,V), U,V V p (3) The meric ensor of g, C : T p M T p M is defined as g (X,Y) = g(c X,Y), X,Y T p M
A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS 3 All he hree ensors above are symmeric and posiive definie. The nex proposiion shows how hey are relaed: Proposiion 2.1 (Proposiion 1.1 in [17]). The ensors above saisfy: (1) P = (P 1 +1) 1 = P(1+P) 1, (2) If X = X +U hen C (X) = X +((1+P) 1 U). The meric ensor C 1 can be used o define an suiable reparamerizaion of 2-planes. Using his reparamerizaion we can observe ha Cheeger deformaions do no creae new planes wih zero secional curvaure. More generally: Theorem 2.2. Le X = X+U, Y = Y +V be angen vecors. Then κ (X,Y) := R g (C 1 X,C 1 Y,C 1 Y,C 1 X) saisfies (2) κ (X,Y) = κ 0 (X,Y)+ 3 4 [PU,PV] 2 Q +z (X,Y), where z is non-negaive. (See [16, Proposiion 1.3] for deails.) Nex we provide a formula for he Ricci curvaure of Cheeger deformed meric (compare wih [15, Equaion (57)]) Ricci curvaure. Le {v 1,...,v k } be a Q-orhonormal basis of eigenvecors of P : m p m p, wih eigenvalues λ 1... λ k. Given a g-orhonormal basis {e k+1,..,e n } for H p, we fix he g-orhonormal basis {e 1,...,e k,e k+1,...,e n } for T p M, where e i = λ 1/2 i vi for i k. I follows ha: Claim 1. The se {C 1/2 e i } n is a g -orhonormal basis for T p M. Moreover, C 1/2 e i = (1+λ i ) 1/2 e i for i k and C 1/2 e i = e i for i > k. Define he horizonal Ricci curvaure as (3) Ric h (X) := R(X,e i,e i,x). Lemma 1. For {e 1,...,e n } as above, (4) Ric g (X) = Ric h g (C X)+ + k 1 ( 1+λ i κ 0 (λ 1/2 i i=k+1 z (C 1/2 e i,c X) vi,c X)+ λ ) i 4 [v i,p(1+p) 1 X g ] 2 Q. Proof. A sraighforward compuaion following equaion (2) gives Ric g (C 1 X) = = = Ric h g (X)+ n κ 0 (C 1/2 e i,x)+ R g (C 1/2 e i,c 1 X,C 1 X,C 1/2 e i ) = z (C 1/2 e i,x)+ z (C 1/2 e i,x)+ 3 4 k k [PC 1/2 λ 1/2 i κ (C 1/2 e i,x) v i,px g ] 2 Q 1 ( κ 0 (λ 1/2 i vi 1+λ,X)+λ i 3 ) i 4 [v i,px g ] 2 Q.
4 A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS Equaion (4) now follows by replacing X by C X. 3. Cheeger deformaions on fiber bundles We use Cheeger deformaion o produce deformed merics on fiber bundles wih compac srucure group. Le F M π B be a fiber bundle from a compac manifold M, wih fiber F, compac srucure group G and base B. We sar by recalling ha he srucure group of a fiber bundle is he group where some choice of ransiion funcions on M ake values. Precisely, if G acs effecively on F, hen G is a srucure group for π if here is a choice of local rivializaions {(U i,φ i : π 1 (U i ) U i F)} such ha, for every i,j wih U i U j, here is a coninuous funcion ϕ ij : U i U j G saisfying (5) φ i φ 1 j (p,f) = (p,ϕ ij (p)f), for all p U i U j. The exisence of {ϕ ij } allows us o consruc a principal G-bundle overb (see [8, Proposiion 5.2] for deails) ha we shall denoe by P. Furhermore, here exiss a principal G-bundle π : P F M whose principal acion is given by (6) r(p,f) := (rp,rf). (For deails see he consrucion on he proof of [4, Proposiion 2.7.1].) For each pair g and g F of G-invarian merics on P and F, respecively, here exiss a meric h on M induced by π. Denoe by M he se of all merics obained in his way (for insance, if G is ransiive on F hen every meric on M such ha he holonomy acs by isomeries on each fiber belongs o M). The se M is he se of admissible merics for our deformaion: Definiion 1 (The deformaion). Given h M, consider g g F a produc meric on P F such ha π : (P F,g g F ) (M,h) is a Riemannian submersion. We define h as he submersion meric induced by g g F, where g is he ime Cheeger deformaion associaed o g. As i can be seen, he deformaion iself is well-defined for a broader class of merics (for insance, P F could have any meric such ha each slice {p} F has a G-invarian meric), however, if he meric is no a produc meric, he deformed curvaure is harder o conrol and Theorem 3.1 below does no hold. Fix (p,f) P F. Any X T (p,f) (P F) can be wrien as X = (X+V,X F + W ), where X is orhogonal o he G-orbi on P, X F is orhogonal o he G-orbi on F and, for V,W g, V and W are he acion vecors relaive o he G-acions on P and F respecively. Le P, P F and P be he orbi ensors associaed o g, g F and g, respecively. We claim ha X is g g F -orhogonal o he G-orbi of (6) if and only if (7) X = (X (P 1 P F W),X F +W ). for some W m f. A vecor (X + V,X F + W ) is horizonal if and only if, for every U g: 0 = g g F ((X +V,X F +W ),(U,U )) = g(v,u )+g F (W,U ) Since U is arbirary, we conclude ha V = P 1 P F W. = Q(P V +P F W,U).
A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS 5 Keeping in mind ha he poin (p,f) is fixed, we abuse noaion and denoe (8) d π (p,f) (X,X F +U ) := X +X F +U. (9) (10) Define he ensors P, C : m f m f, P := P F (1+P 1 P F ) 1 = (P 1 F +P 1 ) 1, C := C P 1 P = P 1 P. Claim 2. Le L π : T π(p,f) M T (p,f) (P F) be he horizonal lif associaed o π. Then, (11) L π (X +X F +U ) = (X (P 1 P U),X F +(P 1 F P U) ). Proof. Firs observe ha he righ-hand-side of (11) is of he form (7): ake W = P 1 P F U, so P 1 P U = P 1 P F W. Therefore, i is sufficien o verify ha d π(x (P 1 P U),X F +(P 1 F P U) ) = X +X f +U. Since kerd π = {(U,U ) U g}, convenion (8) gives d π(u,0) = U, hus d π(x (P 1 since P = (P 1 P U),X F +(P 1 F P U) ) = X+X F +((P 1 +P 1 F ) P U) = X+X f +U +P 1 F ) 1. Nex, we prove ha he unreduced secional curvaure is non-decreasing for reparamerized planes (Theorem 3.1). For he reparamerizaion, exend C o T π(p,f) M via (12) C (X +X F +U ) := X +X F +( C U). Denoe κ ( X,Ỹ) = R h ( C X, C Y, C Y, C X). Theorem 3.1 (Secional curvaure). Le h M and g g F be as in Definiion 1. Then, for every pair X = X +X F +U, Ỹ = Y +Y F +V, κ ( X,Ỹ) = κ (X+U,Y+V )+K gf (X F (P 1 F PV) )+ z ( X,Ỹ), where κ is as in Theorem 2.2 and z is non-negaive. Proof. The proof follows from a direc use of Gray O Neill curvaure formula and Claim 2. Observe ha L π C 1 L π ( C 1 X) = (C 1 (X +U ),X F (P 1 F PU) ). Le z be hree imes he norm squared of he inegrabiliy ensor of π applied o X,L π C 1 Ỹ (see [4] for deails). Then, R h ( C X, C Y, C Y, C X) = K g (C 1 (X +U ),C 1 (Y +V )) +K gf (X F (P 1 F PV) )+ z ( X,Ỹ) = κ (X+U,Y+V )+K gf (X F (P 1 F PV) )+ z ( X,Ỹ). Alhough, he erm z plays no role on he applicaions in his paper, we claim ha i is, acually, non-decreasing wih respec o. This is a crucial observaion since z 0 isanessenialparofheiniialcurvaure: since π : (P F,g g F ) (M,h)
6 A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS ischosenobe ariemanniansubmersion, z 0 ishe A-ensorermonhe submersion formula. Or, equivalenly, aking = 0 in Theorem 3.1, K h ( X,Ỹ) = κ 0( X,Ỹ) = κ 0 (X+U,Y+V )+K gf (X F (P 1 F PV) )+ z 0 ( X,Ỹ) = K g (X+U,Y+V )+K gf (X F (P 1 F PV) )+ z 0 ( X,Ỹ) Applicaions o Ricci curvaure. We use of he heory developed so far o prove Theorem 1.1. We begin by consrucing an appropriae basis for he horizonal space of π wih respec o g g F. Consider a Q-orhonormal basis {v k (0)} of m f and define Lemma 2. The se (13) {( P 1 v k () = P 1/2 v k (0). P v k (),P 1 P F v k () )} = {( P 1 P 1/2 v k (0),P 1 1/2 F P v k (0) )} is g g F -orhonormal and g g F orhogonal o (U,U ), for every U g. Proof. Noe ha he elemens in (13) are of he form (11). Thus, i is sufficien o show ha he se (13) is orhonormal. A sraighforward compuaion gives: g g F (( P 1 P v i (),P 1 P F v i () ),( P 1 P v j (),P 1 P F v j () )) = Q( P v i (),P 1 where we have used ha (P 1 = Q( P v i (),(P 1 P v j ())+Q( P v i (),P 1 F P v j ()) +P 1 F ) P v j ()) = Q( P v i (),v j ()) = Q( P 1/2 v i (0), P 1/2 v j (0)) = δ ij, +P 1 1 F ) = P and ha P is symmeric. Le {e B i } and{ef j } be orhonormalbasesforhe spacesnormalo he orbisonp and on F, respecively. We complee he se on Lemma 2 o a g g F -ohornormal basis for he π-horizonal space: { (14) B := (e B i,0),( P 1 P 1/2 v k (0),P 1 1/2 F P v k (0) } ),(0,e F j ). Denoe by e 1,...,e n he elemens in B. Theorem 1.1 follows from he nex wo lemmas. Lemma 3. For any (p,f) P F and X +X F +U T π(p,f) M, (15) lim Ric h (X +X F +U ) Ric h g (X)+Rich g F (X F )+ k Proof. Using he basis B, from (14), and Theorem 3.1, we have: i + j Ric h ( X) = κ ( C X, C e i ) κ (X (C P 1 P U),e B i )+ k K gf (X F +(P 1 F P U),e F j )+ k κ (C X (C P 1 P U), C P [v k(0),u] 2 Q. P 1/2 v k (0) ) K gf (X F +(P 1 P F U),P 1 1/2 F P v k (0) ).
A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS 7 On he oher hand, he P saisfy: (16) (17) lim P = 1, lim P 1 P = 1. In paricular, P 0 as. Boh (16) follows since P = P F (P +P F ) 1 P, P 0 and P 1. Equaion (17) follows since lim P 1 P = lim (P ) 1 lim P = 1. Using (16), we observe ha lim K gf (X F +(P 1 P F U),e F j )+ j k (18) Moreover, using equaion (2) and ha C P 1 = P 1, (19) lim i κ (X (C P 1 For he remaining erm: κ (C X (C P 1 P U), C P 1 K gf (X F +(P 1 P F U),P 1 1/2 F P v k (0) ) = Ric h g F (X F ). P U),e i ) lim Ric h g (X (P 1 P U) ) = Ric h g (X). P 1/2 v k (0) ) K g (X (P 1 P U) 1, P P1/2 v k (0) )+ 3 4 [ P U, Using (16) and (17), we obain 1/2 P v k (0)] 2 Q (20) lim κ (C X (C P 1 P U), C P 1 P 1/2 v k (0) ) 1 4 [v k(0),u] 2 Q. Lemma 3 follows by puing ogeher (18), (19) and (20). Lemma 4. Le F be a G-manifold. Assume ha he orbis of he G-acion on F have finie fundamenal group and ha he orbial disance meric on F / G has Ricci curvaure Ric F/G 1. Then here is a G-invarian g F on F wih Ric h g F > 0. Proof. Le g F be a G-invarian meric on F where he orbis of G have finie fundamenal group. Then, g F has posiive horizonal Ricci curvaure if and only if he Ricci curvaure of any arbirarily large Cheeger deformaion of g F is posiive. This is decoded in he following way: (21) lim Ric (gf) (X) = Ric h (X), where (g F ) is he Cheeger defomormaion of g F. Noe ha he hypohesis on Lemma 4 are he same as he ones in [14, Theorem A]. Under such hypohesis, he auhors consruced a G-invarian meric g F whose Ricci curvaure was posiive afer arbirarily large Cheeger deformaion (see[14, Theorems 6.1, 6.2]), proving Lemma 4. Proof of Theorem 1.1. Le g F be as in Lemma 4. Assume by conradicion ha, for each > 0, here is a poin x M and a h-uniary vecor X +(X F ) +U
8 A METRIC DEFORMATION ON FIBER BUNDLES AND APPLICATIONS such ha Ric h (X + (X F ) + U ) 0. Then, considering = n N, we ge a sequence X n +(X F ) n +Un such ha lim Ric h n (X n +(X F ) n +U n n ) 0. Since P and F are compac and he horizonal lif is an isomery, here is a limi poin x and a non-zero vecor X +X F +U such ha (22) Ric h g (X)+ 1 [v j (0),U] 2 Q 4 +Rich g F (X F ) 0. j Recall ha he sum k 1 4 [v k(0),u] 2 Q is he Ricci curvaure of he Q-normal homogeneous space G/G f in he direcion U. We claim ha G/G f has finie fundamenal group, whenever f is on he principal par or no. Le H < G be a principal isoropy group for he G-acion on F. By hypohesis, π 1 (G/H) is finie. Following Bredon [2, secion IV.3], we can assume (up o conjugaion) ha H < G f. The long homoopy sequence of G f /H G/H G/G f gives: π 1 (G/H) π 1 (G/G f ) π 0 (G f /H) Therefore, π 1 (G/G f ) is finie if and only if G f /H has a finie number of conneced componens. However, G f is a compac manifold, since i is a closed subgroup of he compac Lie group G. Therefore, π 1 (G/G f ) is finie. j [v j(0),u] 2 Q C U 2 Q (see We conclude ha here is a C > 0 such ha 1 4 e.g. Proposiion 3.4 in Nash [10], Proposiion 6.6 in [14] or Theorem 1 in [1]). Therefore, Ric h g(x)+ric h g F (X F )+C U 2 Q 0, which is a conradicion. Nex, we lis he resuls from Nash [10] and Poor [11] which are Corollary o Theorem 1.1. Corollary 3.2 ([10] Theorem 3.5.). Le (E,M,G/H,G,π) be a fibre bundle such ha M is compac and admis a meric g wih Ric g > 0. If G is compac and G / H admis a meric wih Ric 1 (equivalenly, if π 1 (G/H) is finie), hen E admis a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure. Corollary 3.3 ([10] Corollary3.6.). Le (E,M,S n,o(n+1),ˆπ), n 2, be a sphere bundle whose basis is compac and possesses a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure. Then E admis a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure. Corollary 3.4 ([10]Theorem3.8.). Le (E,M,F,G,ˆπ) be a bundle wih M compac admiing a meric g wih Ric g > 0. If G is compac, possesses finie fundamenal group and acs freely on F, which is compac such ha F/G admis a meric wih Ric 1, hen E admis a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure. Corollary 3.5 ([11] Main Theorem). Le M and F be compac Riemannian manifolds such ha he Ricci curvaure of M and he secional curvaure of F are posiive. Suppose π : FM M is a bundle wih fiber F for which he srucural group G acs on F by isomeries. Then FM admis a meric of posiive Ricci curvaure in which he fibers of π are oally geodesic and muually isomeric in FM.
