The hyperbolic case is under discussion. New properies of unpredicable funcions are discovered. The presence of he soluions confirms he exisence of Poincaré chaos. Simulaions illusraing he chaos are provided. Keywords: Unpredicable soluions; Poincaré chaos; Linear non-homogeneous sysems 1 Inroducion and Preliminaries The concep of he unpredicable funcions was inroduced in he paper [2]. The descripion of such funcions relies on he dynamics of unpredicable poins, which were presened in he sudy [1] for he firs ime in he lieraure. Considering unpredicable poins he auhors exended he limis of he heory of classical dynamical sysems, which was founded by H. Poincaré and G. Birkhoff. The definiion in [2] considers he funcions as poins of he Bebuov dynamics [6]. The meric of he dynamics is no convenien for applicaions in he heory of differenial equaions. Therefore, in paper [4], i was suggesed o uilize he opology of uniform convergence on compac subses of he real axis. This definiion is possibly he mos effecive one for mehods of qualiaive analysis. The paper [4] was devoed o he invesigaion of sufficien condiions for he exisence of unpredicable soluions of quasilinear differenial equaions in he case ha marices of coefficiens admi all eigenvalues wih negaive real pars as well as discree equaions. The presen sudy has wo principal novelies wih respec o he previous resuls in he field. The firs one is ha we consider he hyperbolic case, when he eigenvalues of he marix of coefficiens can admi posiive real pars. The second one is ha we propose a simpler and more comprehensible proof for he unpredicabiliy propery his ime. As i was confirmed in papers by Akhme and Fen [1]-[4], he Corresponding Auhor Tel.: , Fax: , mara@meu.edu.r 1
exisence of unpredicable soluions simulaneously means he presence of Poincaré chaos, i.e., unpredicable soluions are irregular". This makes he subjec aracive for applicaions. Finally, we consider new properies of he funcions. Sufficien condiions are provided such ha a linear ransformaion of an unpredicable funcion is unpredicable, and i is proved ha he sum of an unpredicable funcion and a periodic funcion is an unpredicable funcion. In he remaining par of he paper, we will make use of he usual Euclidean norm for vecors and he norm induced by he Euclidean norm for square marices. The definiion of unpredicable funcions is as follows. Definiion 1.1 [4] A uniformly coninuous and bounded funcion ϑ : R R m is unpredicable if here exis posiive numbers ǫ 0, δ and sequences { n }, {u n } boh of which diverge o infiniy such ha ϑ(+ n ) ϑ() 0 as n uniformly on compac subses of he axis and ϑ(+ n ) ϑ() ǫ 0 for each [u n δ,u n +δ] and n N. For he convenience of he nex discussion, we will call he convergence of he funcion s shifs on compac subses as Poisson sabiliy and he exisence of he number ǫ 0 as unpredicabiliy propery of he funcion. Thus, a funcion is unpredicable, if i is Poisson sable and admis he unpredicabiliy propery. I is worh noing ha in he lieraure a large number of resuls are obained for periodic, quasiperiodic and almos periodic soluions of differenial equaions due o he esablished mahemaical mehods and imporan applicaions. On he oher hand, recurren and Poisson sable soluions are also crucial for he heory of differenial equaions [5, 6]. The proposal by Akhme and Fen can revive ineres of specialiss in differenial equaions heory for wo reasons. The firs one is relaed o he verificaion of he unpredicabiliy which requess more sophisicaed echnique han for recurren and Poisson sable soluions. Thus he problem of he exisence of unpredicable soluions is a challenging one. Anoher crucial reason is ha he presence of unpredicable soluions is necessarily accompanied by he exisence of chaos, which is called Poincaré chaos in papers [1]-[4]. Consequenly, he research of differenial equaions wih unpredicable soluions will definiely help o acivae sudy and applicaions of chaos. The main objec of he presen paper is he following sysem of linear differenial equaions, x () = Ax()+g(), (1.1) where x R n, n is a fixed naural number and R is he se of all real numbers. Moreover, we assume ha all eigenvalues of he consan marix A R n n have nonzero real pars, and he funcion g : R R n is uniformly coninuous and bounded. Assume ha Reλ i < 0,i = 1,2,...,q, and Reλ i > 0,i = q + 1,...,p,1 q < p, where λ i,i = 2
1,...,p, are eigenvalues of he marix A. I is known ha one can find a regular marix B such ha he ransformaion x = By changes he sysem (1.1) o he equaion y () = B 1 ABy()+B 1 g(), (1.2) wih he diagonal marix of coefficiens. This is why, wihou loss of generaliy one can assume ha he marix A is equal o diag(a,a + ), where eigenvalues of marices A and A + are wih negaive and posiive real pars respecively. From he equaion (1.2), i implies ha he following auxiliary asserion will be needed. Lemma 1.1 The funcion f() = B 1 g() is unpredicable. The proof of he lemma immediaely follows he inequaliies f(+ n ) f() B 1 g(+ n ) g() and f(+ n ) f() 1 B g(+ n) g(). For furher applicaions of he main resul of he paper, he following lemma can be useful. Lemma 1.2 Assume ha g() is an unpredicable funcion, and a funcion f() is coninuous and periodic. Then he sum g +f is an unpredicable funcion. Proof. Consider he sum h() g()+f(). Le n be he sequence such ha g(+ n ) converges o g() uniformly on all compac subses of he axis. Since of periodiciy of f(), one can find a subsequence of n (we will assume, wihou loss of generaliy ha i is he sequence n iself) ha saisfyf(+ n ) f() 0 uniformly on he axis. Consequenly, h(+ n ) h() = (g(+ n ) g())+(f(+ n ) f()) 0 uniformly on compac subses of he axis as n. The Poisson sabiliy is proved. Consider, now, he sequence u n and posiive numbers η,σ, such ha g( + n ) g() η for [u n σ,u n + σ]. Again, due o he periodiciy, one can find a subsequence of u n, le say he sequence iself, such ha f( + n ) f() < η/2 if [u n σ,u n + σ]. Then, h( + n ) h() g( + n ) g() f( + n ) f() > η η/2 = η/2 for [u n σ,u n + σ]. The unpredicabiliy propery is proved. 2 Main resul In wha follows we will denoe g = (g,g + ), where he vecor-funcions g and g + are of dimensions q and p q, respecively. As i is known from he heory of differenial equaions, sysem (1.1) admis a unique soluion ϕ() = (ϕ (),ϕ + ()) which is bounded on R, where ϕ () = e A ( s) g (s)ds, ϕ + () = e A+( s) g + (s)ds. (2.3) 3
One can confirm ha he bounded soluion is periodic, quasi-periodic, or almos periodic if he perurbaion funcion g is respecively of he same ype. The following heorem is concerned wih he unpredicable soluion of sysem (1.1). Theorem 2.1 If all eigenvalues of he marix A admi non-zero real pars, and he funcion g() is unpredicable, hen he sysem (1.1) possesses a unique unpredicable soluion. If addiionally, all he eigenvalues are wih negaive real pars, hen he unpredicable soluion is uniformly asympoically sable. Proof. From he condiions of he heorem i implies ha he sysem admis a bounded soluion and i is uniformly asympoically sable if he marix of coefficiens admis all eigenvalues wih negaive real pars. This is why, i is sufficien o prove ha he soluion (2.3) is an unpredicable funcion. We will show, firs, ha he soluion is Poisson sable. Since he eigenvalues of he marix A in sysem (1.1) have non-zero real pars, here exis numbers K 1 and α > 0 such ha e A Ke α for 0 and e A+ Ke α for 0. Since he funcion g is Poisson sable here exiss a sequence n such ha g(+ n ) g() 0 uniformly on compac subses of he axis. One can easily find ha and ϕ (+ n ) ϕ () = = e A ( s) [g (s+ n ) g (s)]ds g (s) ds ϕ + (+ n ) ϕ + () = = g + (s) ds e A ( s) g (s+ n )ds Ke α( s) g (s+ n ) g () ds, e A+( s) g + (s+ n )ds e A+( s) [g + (s+ n ) g + (s)]ds Ke α( s) g + (s+ n ) g + () ds. e A ( s) g (s)ds e A ( s) g (s+ n ) e A+( s) g + (s)ds e A+( s) g + (s+ n ) Fix an arbirary posiive number ǫ and a secion [a,b], < a < b <, of he real axis. We will show ha for sufficienly large n i is rue ha ϕ(+ n ) ϕ() < ǫ on [a,b]. Denoe M = sup R g, and choose numbers c < a,b < d,ξ > 0, such ha 2MK α e α(a c) < ǫ 4, 2MK α e α(d b) < ǫ 4 Consider n sufficienly large such ha g(+ n ) g() < ξ on [c,b]. Then for all [a,b] ϕ (+ n ) ϕ () c c c Ke α( s) g (s+ n ) g (s) ds Ke α( s) g (s+ n ) g (s) ds+ c Ke α( s) 2Mds+ Ke α( s) ξds 2MK α e α(a c) + Kξ α ǫ 4 + ǫ 4 = ǫ 2, and Kξ α < ǫ 4. 4
and similarly one can show ha ϕ + (+ n ) ϕ + () d d d Ke α( s) g + (s+ n ) g + (s) ds Ke α( s) g + (s+ n ) g + (s) ds+ d Ke α( s) ξds+ Ke α( s) 2Mds Kξ α + 2MK α e α(d b) ǫ 4 + ǫ 4 = ǫ 2. We have obained ha for sufficienly large n i is rue ha ϕ(+ n ) ϕ() ϕ + (+ n ) ϕ + () + ϕ (+ n ) ϕ () < ǫ for [a,b]. The Poisson sabiliy of he soluion ϕ is proved. Le us check ha he soluion possesses he unpredicabiliy propery. Since he funcion g is unpredicable, here exis a sequence u n and posiive numbers η, κ such ha g(u n +) g(u n ) η for [u n κ,u n +κ]. One can easily check ha eiher g (u n +) g (u n ) η/2 or g + (u n +) g + (u n ) η/2 for he same. Assume ha he firs inequaliy is valid, since anoher case can be considered very similarly. Then, here is a number, wihou loss of generaliyκ iself, such ha g (+ n ) g () η/4 for all [u n κ,u n +κ]. Wihou loss of generaliy we assume ha g ( + n ) g () η for all [u n κ,u n +κ]. A firs we assume ha inf n ϕ(u n + n ) ϕ(u n ) = 0. This conradics he equaliy ϕ(+ n ) ϕ() = ϕ(u n + n ) ϕ(u n )+ A(ϕ(s+ n ) ϕ(s))ds+ (g(s+ n ) g(s))ds, u n u n since he las inegral is a posiive number larger han η and oher erms end o zero as n for each posiive fixed momen from he inerval [u n κ,u n +κ]. This is why, i is rue ha inf n ϕ(u n + n ) ϕ(u n ) = 2ǫ 0, where ǫ 0 is a posiive number. Fix a posiive number σ such ha 2ησe A κ < ǫ 0. Now, we have ha ϕ(+ n ) ϕ() = ϕ(u n + n ) ϕ(u n )+ e A( s) [g(s+ n ) g(s)]ds 2ǫ 0 ησe A κ > ǫ 0, u n for [u n σ,u n +σ]. The unpredicabiliy is proved. The proof of he heorem is compleed. 5
3 Examples One of he possible ways o confirm he presence of chaos is hrough simulaions. The concep of unpredicable soluions mainain he series of oscillaors, bu from he oher side he chaos accompanies unpredicabiliy. Consequenly, we can look for a confirmaion of he resuls for unpredicabiliy observing irregulariy in simulaions. The approach is effecive for asympoically sable unpredicable soluions, and i is jus illusraive for hyperbolic sysems wih unsable soluions. In he laer case we rely on he fac ha any soluion becomes unpredicable ulimaely. In he following examples we will uilize he funcion Θ() = e 2( s) Ω(s)ds, (3.4) which was discussed in paper [4]. The funcion Ω() is defined by Ω() = ψ i for [i,i+1), i Z, where {ψ i }, i Z, is an unpredicable soluion of he logisic map λ i+1 = 3.91λ i (1 λ i ) (3.5) inside he uni inerval [0,1]. The funcion Θ() is bounded on he whole real axis such ha sup Θ() R 1/2, and i is uniformly coninuous since is derivaive is bounded. I was proven in paper [4] ha Θ() is an unpredicable funcion. Example 3.1. Consider he sysem x 1 = 2x 1 +2x Θ() sin(10) x 2 = x 1 3x 2 150Θ()+cos(10) (3.6) where he eigenvalues of he marix of coefficiens are 2 and 0.5. One can confirm ha he perurbaion funcion (259Θ() sin(10), 150Θ() + cos(10)) is unpredicable in accordance wih Lemma 1.2. By he main resul of our paper, here is an asympoically sable unpredicable soluion (ϕ 1 (),ϕ 2 ()) of sysem (3.6). Consequenly, any soluion of he equaion behaves irregularly ulimaely. This is seen from he simulaion of he soluion wih x 1 (0) = 0,18, x 2 (0) = 0,01 in Figures 1 and 2. The nex example is devoed o a sysem wih hyperbolic linear par such ha he marix of coefficiens admi boh posiive and negaive eigenvalues. 6
Figure 1: The ime series of he x 1 and x 2 coordinaes of sysem (3.6) wih he iniial condiions x 1 (0) = 0,18, x 2 (0) = 0,01. The figure manifess he presence of Poincaré chaos. Figure 2: The rajecory of sysem (3.6) wih he iniial poin (0,0,01). Example 3.2. Le us ake ino accoun he he sysem u 1 = 52098u ϕ 2 () u 2 = 9.5u u ϕ 1 (), (3.7) where (ϕ 1 (),ϕ 2 ()) is he unpredicable soluion of sysem (3.6). The eigenvalues of he marix of coefficiens of sysem (3.7) are and According o he resul of Theorem 2.1, sysem (3.7) possesses a unique unpredicable soluion. 7
In order o show he irregular behavior, we consider he sysem y 1 = 52098y x 2 () y 2 = 9.5y y x 1 (), (3.8) where (x 1 (),x 2 ()) is he soluion of (3.6) depiced in Figures 1 and 2. The simulaion resuls for sysem (3.8) corresponding o he iniial condiions y 1 (0) = 0 and y 2 (0) = 0 are shown in Figures 3 and 4. Boh of he figures confirm he presence of unpredicabiliy in he dynamics of sysem (3.8). Figure 3: The ime series for he y 1 and y 2 coordinaes of sysem (3.8) wih he iniial condiions y 1 (0) = 0, y 2 (0) = 0. The irregular behavior of he soluion reveals he presence of an unpredicable soluion in he dynamics of (3.8). Figure 4: The rajecory of he soluion of sysem (3.8) wih y 1 (0) = 0 and y 2 (0) = 0. 8
