1 A LEVEL PHYSICS Specimen Assessment Materials 00 COMPONENT ELECTRICITY AND THE UNIVERSE MARK SCHEME GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS The mark scheme should be applied precisely and no departure made from it. Recording of marks Examiners must mark in red ink. One tick must equate to one mark (except for the extended response question). totals should be written in the box at the end of the question. totals should be entered onto the grid on the front cover and these should be added to give the script total for each candidate. Marking rules All work should be seen to have been marked. Marking schemes will indicate when explicit working is deemed to be a necessary part of a correct answer. Crossed out responses not replaced should be marked. Credit will be given for correct and relevant alternative responses which are not recorded in the mark scheme. Extended response question A level of response mark scheme is used. Before applying the mark scheme please read through the whole answer from start to finish. Firstly, decide which level descriptor matches best with the candidate s response: remember that you should be considering the overall quality of the response. Then decide which mark to award within the level. Award the higher mark in the level if there is a good match with both the content statements and the communication statement.

2 A LEVEL PHYSICS Specimen Assessment Materials 0 Marking abbreviations The following may be used in marking schemes or in the marking of scripts to indicate reasons for the marks awarded. cao = correct answer only ecf = error carried forward bod = benefit of doubt

4 A LEVEL PHYSICS Specimen Assessment Materials 03 (a) (i) Diagram or set-up D Wire shown along with movable contact (accept crocodile clip). D Metre ruler. D3 Method for measuring resistance shown e.g. correct circuit with ohmmeter or correct circuit with voltmeter and ammeter appropriately connected. D4 Micrometer or digital callipers or vernier scales. Method M Vary length. M Measure resistance (or I and V). M3 Measure diameter or thickness. M4 Repeat readings of resistance and length and the mean values obtained. M5 Repeat readings of diameter (or thickness) and the mean value obtained. M6 Diameter (thickness) measured in different places along the wire. M7 Measure zero error of ohmmeter. Results R - Plot graph of resistance against length. R Measure gradient. R3 Intercept should be zero. R4 - RA quoted. l R5 - = gradient area R6 Area = r where r d 5-6 marks All of D D4 present. All of M M3 and M5 and either M6 or M7 present. All of R, R, R4, R5 and R6 present

5 A LEVEL PHYSICS Specimen Assessment Materials 04 There is a sustained line of reasoning which is coherent, relevant, substantiated and logically structured. 3-4 marks Expect any 3 from D D4. Expect M, M and M3. Expect R, R and R4. There is a line of reasoning which is partially coherent, largely relevant, supported by some evidence and with some structure. - marks Expect any from D D4. Expect M and M. Expect R. There is a basic line of reasoning which is not coherent, largely irrelevant, supported by limited evidence and with very little structure. 0 marks No attempt made or no response worthy of credit. (ii) Substitution into R l A () = [ m] () (b) Because R [for equivalent lengths] () A Therefore there is an increased resistance [per metre] () Therefore higher values of R for equivalent lengths lead to a steeper gradient () Resistivity does not change because the material of the wire does not change () 4 4 total 7 3 0
