Black Holes and Fireballs at the LHC MPP Munich, Anastasios Talio7s Vrije Universiteit Brussel arxiv: ; published in JHEP
Outline Review Shockwave collisions in GR Trapped surface analysis, an elementary introduc7on Flat backgrounds, applica7ons to BHs produc7on at the LHC and extra dimensions AdS backgrounds and applica7ons to QGP produc7on at the LHC Summary/conclusions/take home message
Review Shockwave collisions Studied by many authors in both backgrounds [Ads:,Albacete,Kovcegov,Talio7s;Romatscke,Mateos- Solana- van der Schee,,Heller,Janik,Peschanski,Wu, Chesler,Yaffe, Flat: t HooZ,D Eath, Payne,Giddings,Tomaras,Talio7s, Herdeiro et.al ] Single shock wave geometry
Essen7al formulas Restricted SO(3) invariant shocks: ds 2 =!2dx+ dx! + dx 2 " + EG 5 z!(q(z, x " ))"(x! )(dx! ) 2 q = x z 2 / L 2 2! + (z " z 0 ) 2 4zz 0 R!! + 4 L g ~ 2!!!(x! )" q2 " = 8#G 5 J!! = EG 5 $(q)!(x! ) z o es7mates the center of ρ in the 5 th dimension. z o is also the width of T μν in gauge theory side. Although expected, NOT trivial to show this for any ρ.
What does this describe in gauge theory? Can show g - - bdry ~ T - -. Since g - - bdry ~ f(x_perp)δ(x - ) It implies that this geometry describes a thin fast glueball along x- having a having a transverse profile. z=z 0 Figure taken from GYP T - -
Superimpose two shocks: Add another one along the opposite direc7on Shocks talk each other at x - >0, x + >0 2D Plasma at t=0, Highly anisotropic
Introduc7on to TS 7
Important Clarifica7ons What this method does not do: does NOT provide info for g μν on future LC What this method can do: provides a sugges7on that a BH is formed by reducing to unusual BV problem. In what follows we will assume that a BH is always formed. TS yields a lower bound on entropy produc7on S trap S prod [Giddings,Eardly,Nastase,Kung,Gubser,Yarom,Pufu,Kovchegov,Shuryak,Lin,kiritsis,Talio7s,Aref eva, bagrov, JoukovskayaVenezianoAlvarez- Gaume,Gomez,Vera,Tavanfar,Vazquez- Mozo, Romatscke...]
Trapped surface analysis introduc7on (D=4, flat backgrounds) If there is a func7on ψ and some curve C s.t.! " 2 (! #") = 0 " C = 0, # $ ".# $ " C =1 then there exists a trapped surface and it is enclosed inside the curve C. Example: Let the shock φ=eg 4 Log(kx ) ala AS Then ψ=eg 4 Log(x /EG 4 ) and C : x ;C =EG 4 And S = A/4G 4 ~ d 2 x ~E 2 G 4 [Giddings & Eardley, 2002]
AdS Backgrounds and QGP
Trapped Surface Condi7on q c # (1+ 2q) q(1+ q)"(q) dq 0 (1+ 2q c )(1+ q c ) = L3 G 5 $ k E Where k 1/z o (the transverse scale if the colliding glue- ball in the QFT side). Note the dimensionless parameter controlling the TS: E/k Vs E k in flat backgrounds. Interes7ng!! We will classify ρ s under the assump7ons (i) ρ is posi7ve definite (ii) ρ is integrable. (i)+(ii)=> 3+1 cases (iii) (qρ(q)) =0 has at most one root in (0, )=> 3 cases The 3 cases depend on how ρ behaves at small q s!
Case I. Always a single TS Case I.: ρ ~ 1/q n +sub- leading, q<<1, 3/2>n>1/2. (always a single TS) q c # (1+ 2q) q(1+ q)"(q) dq 0 (1+ 2q c )(1+ q c ) = L3 G 5 $ k E
Case II. A marginal case: A single TS for sufficiently large E / k ρ ~ 1/ q +sub- leading, q<<1 (a single TS if E>>k). q c # (1+ 2q) q(1+ q)"(q) dq 0 (1+ 2q c )(1+ q c ) = L3 G 5 $ k E
Case III. Two TS for sufficiently large E / k Case III. ρ ~ 1/q n +sub- leading, q<<1, n<1/2. (2 co- eccentric TSs if E>>k) q c # (1+ 2q) q(1+ q)"(q) dq 0 (1+ 2q c )(1+ q c ) = L3 G 5 $ k E RN- like scenario in the absence of charge [Mureika,Nicoli,Spallucci;Talio7s]
The 3 rd +1 case Remove the (xρ(x)) =0 has a single root
Can show that any ρ: Universal Results Yields a φ s.t. at q>>1 decays as 1/q 3 as dictated by holographic renormaliza7on considera7ons [Skenderis, Papadimitriou, de Haro, Solodukhin, ]. The TS, in the HE limit: k/e<<1, grows as q c3 =E/k with k NOT dropping out. In the HE limit can show S ~ q c 2 and so S~ (E/k) 2/3.
Desired feature captured Seen that a BH, hence QGP, may exist if E>>k. But k is the transverse scale of the SE tensor in QFT; that is scale of colliding glue- balls. Tempted to iden7fy k with Λ QCD This would imply forming QGPó E>>Λ QCD Although expected, it is first 7me in literature such feature is described theore7cally; in present context holographically.
Incorpora7ng strong- weak coupling physics and satura7on scale: a phenomenological approach
A emp7ng to fit RHIC and LHC data A phenomenological approach Relate S with total mul7plici7es N Use CGC model, in par7cular the satura7on scale. Incorporate weak- strong coupling physics.
Mul7plici7es N ch iniaal state QGP and hydrodynamic expansion hadronic phase and freeze- out pre- equilibrium hadronizaaon Up to 15% viscous correc7ons; Heinz et al d 3 N N ch = N ch;i =! " ch;i dy d 2 p dyd 2 p = T T! i i 20
Rela7ng S with N ch Since N CH ~ S GT =AdS/CFT=S ST >S TS. Numerical works [Hogg,Romatschke,Wu] show S ST =bs TS where b is collision energy independent On the other hand, overall constants (gravity parameters s.t. G5/L 3 ) must be fi ed with data. Hence schema7cally work as N ch = (fit b) S TS 21
Connec7on with data Seen that N CH ~S~(E/k) 2/3 k could generally be E dependent Take k=q s (E) and use Q s from pqcd results This means that the transverse scale of colliding ultra- fast pancakes is set by Q s rather than Λ QCD.
Then N ~ (E/Q s (E)) 2/3 ~ (s/λ QCD ) 1/3(1- λ), λ=[0.1,0.2] where λ~0.2 for AA collisions Q s 2 (s NN ) = (0.2GeV ) 2 A 1/3 ( s ) 2! NN Hence N ~ (s/λ QCD ) 0.26 and fit constant using the data. Choosing the (s independent) constant 300 yields
Summary Gave an elementary intro to TS/review known results. Classified transversally symmetric distribu7ons according to the TSs that can create (for flat and AdS backgrounds). Found universal results in both, the geometries at large distances and at the S in the HE limit.
Take home messages Applied to BHs at LHC: No ED=>No BHs but ED=>BHs open scenario (did not study this here). QGPó E>>Λ QCD. First 7me to be described theore7cally.
