1 Aim: Scientific Notation Essential Question: How can I convert between scientific notation and standard form? Vocabulary: Scientific notation, decimal notation, standard notation, power of ten, units of measure is used for very LARGE and very SMALL numbers.

Scientific notation is used to write really big numbers. The amount of moves will give you the exponent value.

4 Using a Calculator with Scientific Notation Being able to perform computations by hand is a very good review of the properties of exponents. Once the concept is understood, a calculator can be used to check our work. The calculator is using the notation 9.3 E 7 to mean 9.3 x To insert the E into a calculation, press 2nd (x -1 ), The face of the calculator reads EE above the x -1 key, but only one E will appear on the screen for your. Use negative exponents for very small numbers = 7.89 x 10 4 A negative exponent means to divide by moving the decimal to the left.
