This is attributed to padding changes in the document and errata revisions. Errata: Below is a table containing submitted errata, and the resolutions that OpenStax has provided for this latest text. Location Preface Light, Sec 4: Total Internal Reflection Light, Sec 6: Huygen's Principle, Figure 1.31 Detail Update contributor list. There is an error in the second paragraph: θ₁>θ₂ should be θ₂>θ₁ Surface rays and wavefront lines are not perpendicular Resolution Notes Update contributor list. In the parenthetical statement in the 2nd paragraph, revise "θ₁ > θ₂" to "θ₂ > θ₁". Eliminate the middle picture and add a label "very wide opening" on the left side. Move the arrows on the left side so that they are on the curved section of the blue curve and not on Error Type Other

2 Light, Sec 7: Polarization, Exercise 1 Light, Sec 7: Polarization, Exercise 75 Light, Sec 7: Polarization, Figures The solution to Exercise 1 is not a complete sentence. Exercise 75 (scuba diver) is confusing ('scuba diver' suggests that the observer is underwater so the light he sees cannot be reflected unless it does not come from the Sun; solution is given for the reflected angle) Figures are at best misleading, at worst plain wrong. If the polarizers are meant to be metal (like you would use for microwave optics), it is wrong. With the slits oriented vertically, vertically polarized light will be quenched due to ohmic loss in the metal. If the drawings are meant to be conceptual then it will lead students to the conclusion that the light "slips" through the flat vertical part. solution to exercise 1 as follows: Light can be modeled as a ray when devices are large compared to wavelength, and as a wave when devices are comparable or small compared to wavelength. Revise exercise 75 as follows: 75. A scuba diver sees light reflected from the water s surface. Mnet = di obj (f eye + 25 cm)/f obj f eye = (18.6 cm)(5.00 cm + 25 cm)/(0.620 cm)(5.00 cm) = 180 is incorrectly 1)missing the minus sign in the first formula line as should have been by Eq.(2.34); in the second numerical line 2) the wrong value of cm for fobj and 3) wrong value for Mnet. The solutions for module 2.4 conceptual questions are This equation appears correctly in the Key Equations section. Switch the labels d_o and d_i. last equation in the solution of Example 2.11 as follows: Mnet = - di obj (feye + 25 cm)/fobj f eye = (18.6 cm)(5.00 cm + 25 cm)/(0.600 cm)(5.00 cm) = 186. None

Please confirm. Where Question 72 says "he slide is illuminated from above..." it should be "The slide is illuminated from above..." The text states that the next maxima after the central maxima has a value of phi of 3 pi and beta of 3 pi over 2. This is not correct. Differentiating the intensity equation and setting it to zero leads to the transcendental equation that tangent (beta) = beta. A solution to this is close to 3 pi over 2 but not equal to 3 pi over 2-the solution near 3 pi over 2 is roughly at beta = 4.5. The book derives that I1=0.045I_zero. At a phi of 9, the intensity is 0.047I_zero (which is more than the stated I1 maximum). The book later states that the next maxima is at phi = 5 pi and beta = 5 pi over 2 and this is also incorrect. The values given for phi maximize only the numerator, not the entire expression. I would recommend showing the calculus of differentiating the intensity equation and looking at all solutions: both minima and maxima. This can be seen from phasor diagrams also, but space doesn't allow the explanation. Exercises 34 and 25 should link to Example 5.3, not equal signs to approximatel y equal signs.
