1 UPPER AND LOWER BOUNDS FOR EIGENVALUES OF THE CLAMPED PLATE PROBLEM* arxiv:2.63v [math.dg] 3 Ja 22 QING-MING CHENG AND GUOXIN WEI Abstract. I this paper, we study estimates for eigevalues of the clamped plate problem. A sharp upper boud for eigevalues is give ad the lower boud for eigevalues i [] is improved.. Itroductio A membrae has its trasverse vibratio govered by equatio u = λu, i with the boudary coditio u =, o, where is the Laplacia i R ad is a bouded domai i R. It is classical that there is a coutable sequece of eigevalues < λ < λ 2 λ 3, ad a sequece of correspodig eigefuctios u,u 2,,u k, such that u k = λ k u k, i. The eigefuctios form a orthoormal basis of L 2 ). O the other had, the vibratio of a stiff plate differs from that of a membrae ot oly i the equatio which govers its motio but also i the way the plate is fasteed to its boudary. A plate spaig a domai i R has its trasverse vibratios govered by 2 u = Γu, i,.) u = u ν =, o, where ν deotes the outward uit ormal to the boudary. Namely, ot oly is the rim of the plate firmly fasteed to the boudary, but the plate is clamped so that lateral motio ca occur at the edge. Oe calls it a clamped plate problem. It is kow that this problem has a real ad discrete spectrum < Γ Γ 2 Γ k +, where each Γ i has fiite multiplicity which is repeated accordig to its multiplicity. 2 Mathematics Subject Classificatio: 35P5. Key words ad phrases: The clamped plate problem, upper bouds for eigevalues, lower bouds for eigevalues. * The first author was partly supported by a Grat-i-Aid for Scietific Research from JSPS. 2 2 QING-MING CHENG AND GUOXIN WEI For the eigevalues of the clamped plate problem.), Agmo [] ad Pleijel [22] gave the followig asymptotic formula, This implies that.2) k Γ k 6π 4 B vol) ) 4 k 4, k. Γ j 6π 4 B vol) ) k 4 4, k, j= where B deotes the volume of the uit ball i R. Furthermore, Levie ad Protter [7] proved that the eigevalues of the clamped plate problem.) satisfy k Γ j 6π 4 B vol) ) k 4 4. j= The formula.2) shows that the coefficiet of k 4 is the best possible costat. Thus, it will be iterestig ad very importat to fid the secod term o k of the asymptotic expasio formula of Γ k. The authors [] have made effort for this problem. We have improved the result due to Levie ad Protter [7] by addig to its right had side two terms of lower order i k:.3) where Γ j j= +2 + k + 6π 4 ) 4 Bvol) k 4 2) 52 2 ) ) vol) I) 576) )) +2 ) vol) I) 4π 2 ) 2 Bvol) ) 2, I) = mi x a a R 2 dx is called the momet of iertia of. O the other had, if oe ca obtai a upper boud with optimal order of k for eigevalue Γ k, the oe ca kow the exact secod term o k. From our kowledge, there is o ay result o upper bouds for eigevalue Γ k with optimal order of k. I [2], Cheg ad Yag have established a recursio formula i order to obtai upper bouds for eigevalues of the Dirichlet eigevalue problem of the Laplacia. Hece, if oe ca get a sharper uiversal iequality for eigevalues of the clamped plate problem, we ca also derive a upper boud for eigevalue Γ k by makig use of the recursio formula due to Cheg ad Yag [2]. O the ivestigatio of uiversal iequalities for eigevalues of the clamped plate problem, Paye, Pólya ad Weiberger [2] proved Γ k+ Γ k 8+2) 2 k Γ i. i= k 2
3 UPPER AND LOWER BOUNDS FOR EIGENVALUES 3 Che ad Qia [7] ad Hook [4], idepedetly, exteded the above iequality to 2 k 2 8+2) i= Γ 2 i Γ k+ Γ i Γ 2 i. Recetly, aswerig a questio of Ashbaugh [2], Cheg ad Yag [2] have proved the followig remarkable estimate: i= Γ k+ Γ i ) 8+2) 2 ) 2 i= Γ i Γ k+ Γ i )) 2. Furthermore, Wag ad Xia [25] cf. Cheg, Ichikawa ad Mametsuka [8], [9]) have proved Γ k+ Γ i ) 2 8+2) Γ 2 k+ Γ i )Γ i. i= The first author has cojectured the followig: Cojecture. Eigevalue Γ j s of the clamped plate problem.) satisfy.4) Γ k+ Γ j ) 2 8 j= i= i= Γ k+ Γ j )Γ j. If oe ca solve the above cojecture, the from the recursio formula of Cheg ad Yag [2], we ca derive a upper boud for the eigevalue Γ k with the optimal order of k. But it seems to be hard to solve this cojecture. I this paper, we will try to use a fact that eigefuctios of the clamped plate problem.) form a orthoormal basis of the Sobolev Space W 2,2 ) to get a upper boud for eigevalues of the clamped plate problem.). A similar fact for the Dirichlet eigevalue problem of the Laplacia is also used by Li ad Yau [8] ad Kröger [5]. Furthermore, we will give a improvemet of the iequality.3).
