1 ESTIMATES FOR EIGENVALUES OF THE PANEITZ OPERATOR* arxiv: v1 [math.dg] 7 Jul 01 QING-MING CHENG Abstract. For a -dimesioal compact submaifold i the Euclidea space R N, we study estimates for eigevalues of the Paeitz operator o. Our estimates for eigevalues are sharp. 1. Itroductio For compact Riema surfaces M, Li ad Yau [13] itroduced the otio of coformal volume, which is a global ivariat of the coformal structure. They determied the coformal volume for a large class of Riema surfaces, which admit miimal immersios ito spheres. I particular, they proved that for a compact Riema surface M, if there exists a coformal map from M ito the uit sphere S N 1), the the first eigevalue λ 1 of the Laplacia satisfies λ 1 volm ) V c N,M ) ad the equality holds oly if M is a miimal surface i S N 1), where V c N,M ) is the coformal volume of M. For -dimesioal compact Riemaia maifolds, Paeitz [15] itroduced a fourth order operator P g defied by, lettig div be the divergece for the metric g, 1.1) P g f = f div [ 3 Rg Ric) f], forsmoothfuctiosf om, where ad deotethelaplaciaadthegradiet operator with respect to the metric g o M, respectively, ad R ad Ric are the scalar curvature ad Ricci curvature tesor with respect to the metric g o M. Furthermore, Braso [1] has geeralized the Paeitz operator to a -dimesioal Riemaia maifold. For a -dimesioal Riemaia maifold,g), the operator P g is defied by 1.) P g f = f div [ a Rg +b Ric) f ] + Qf, where Q = c Ric +d 1 1) R 001 Mathematics Subject Classificatio: 53C0, 58C0. It is kow that Paeitz operator is coformally ivariat of bi-degree, + ), thatis, udercoformaltrasformatioofriemaiametricg = e w g 0, thepaeitz operator P g chages ito 1.3) P g f = e + w P g0 e w f). Let M ) be the set of Riemaia metrics o. For each g M ), the total Q-curvature for g is defied by Q[g] = Qdv. Whe =, from the Gauss-Boet theorem for dimesio, we have 1.) Q[g] = 1 W dv+8π χm ), M where W is the Weyl coformal curvature tesor ad χm ) is the Euler characteristic of M. Hece, we kow that the total Q-curvature is a coformal ivariat for dimesio. I[1], Nishikawa has studied the variatio of the total Q-curvature for a geeral dimesio. He has proved that a Riemaia metric g o a )- dimesioal compact maifold is a critical poit of the total Q-curvature fuctioal with respect to a volume preservig coformal variatio of the metric g, if ad oly if the Q-curvature with respect to the metric g is costat. Sice the Paeitz operator P g is a elliptic operator ad P g 1 = 0 for =, we kow that λ 0 = 0 is a eigevalue of P g. Gursky [10] show that if the Yamabe ivariat of M is positive ad the total Q-curvature is positive, the first eigevalue λ 1 is positive. For 6, Yag ad Xu [16] have proved the Paeitz operator P g is positive if the scalar curvature is positive ad Q-curvature is oegative. Furthermore, see [,, 6, 1]. For 3, we cosider the followig closed eigevalue problem o a -dimesioal compact maifold : 1.5) P g u = λu. Sice P g is a elliptic operator, the spectrum of P g o is discrete. We assume for ad for =, 0 < λ 1 < λ,λ k + 0 = λ 0 < λ 1 λ,λ k +.
3 EIGENVALUES OF THE PANEITZ OPERATOR 3 Whe =, Yag ad Xu [17] have itroduced a N-coformal eergy E c N,M ) if M ca be coformally immersed ito the uit sphere S N 1) ad have obtaied a upper boud for the first eigevalue λ 1 : λ 1 volm ) E c N,M ), where vol ) deotes the volume of. Furthermore, Che ad Li [8] have also studied the upper boud o the first eigevalue λ 1 whe M is cosidered as a compact submaifold i a Euclidea space R N. They have proved λ 1 M 16 H + 3 R) dv M H dv { volm ) } ad the equality holds if ad oly if M is a miimal submaifold i a sphere S N 1 r) for N > 5 ad M is a roud sphere S r) for N = 5. I [9], the secod eigevalue λ of the Paeitz operator P g is studied. By makig use of the coformal trasformatio itroduced by Li ad Yau [13], Che ad Li proved, for 7, λ vol ) 1 ) H dv + M Qdv if is a compact submaifold i the Euclidea space R N. Here H deotes the mea curvature of i R N. As they remarked, their method does ot work for 3 6. The purpose of this paper is to study eigevalues of the Paeitz operator P g i - dimesioal compact Riemaia maifolds. Our method is very differet from oe used by Che ad Li [9] ad Xu ad Yag [17]. From Nash s theorem, we kow that each compact Riemaia maifold ca be isometrically immersed ito a Euclidea space R N. Thus, we ca assume is a -dimesioal compact submaifold i R N. Theorem 1.1. Let M,g) be a -dimesioal compact submaifold with the metric g i R N. The, eigevalues of the Paeitz operator P g satisfy λ 1 M j 16 H + R) dv H 3 M dv volm ) ad the equality holds if ad oly if M is a roud sphere S r) for N = 5 ad M is a compact miimal submaifold with costat scalar curvature i S N 1 r) for N > 5. Corollary 1.1. Let M,g) be a -dimesioal compact submaifold with the metric g i the uit sphere S N 1). Remark 1.1. I our theorem 1., we do ot eed to assume the positivity of the Paeitz operaator P g. If the Paeitz operator P g is a positive operator, we have Theorem 1.3. 9 EIGENVALUES OF THE PANEITZ OPERATOR 9 We shall use the same idea to prove the theorem 1.. But, i this case, we eed to use the first eigefuctio u 1, which is ot costat i geeral.
