Fast and Accurate Computation of Exact Nonrefecting Boundary Condition for Maxwe s Equations Xiaodan Zhao and Li-Lian Wang Division of Mathematica Sciences Nanyang Technoogica University, Singapore, zhao1@e.ntu.edu.sg; iian@ntu.edu.sg arxiv:13.595v1 [math-ph] 4 Feb 13 Abstract: We report in this paper a fast and accurate agorithm for computing the exact spherica nonrefecting boundary condition (NRBC) for time-dependent Maxwe s equations. It is essentiay based on a new formuation of the NRBC, which aows for the use of an anaytic method for computing the invoved inverse Lapace transform. This too can be genericay integrated with the interior sovers for chaenging simuations of eectromagnetic scattering probems. We provide some numerica exampes to show that the agorithm eads to very accurate resuts. Keywords: Exact nonrefecting boundary conditions, Maxwe s equations, convoution. 1. Introduction The time-domain simuations, which are capabe of capturing wide-band signas and modeing more genera materia inhomogeneities and noninearities, have attracted much attention [18, 9, 1]. A ongstanding issue in many simuations resides in how to dea with the unbounded computationa domain. Various approaches incuding the perfecty matched ayer (PML) (cf. [3]), the boundary integra methods (cf. [5]), nonrefecting (absorbing or transparent) boundary conditions (cf. [8, 6]), and many others, have been proposed to surmount this obstace. Athough the use of exact nonrefecting boundary conditions (NRBCs) is desirabe and beneficia, the practitioners are usuay pagued with their compications and computationa inefficiency. Indeed, these time-domain NRBCs are goba in both time and space, and invoving Lapace inversion of specia functions. It is worthwhie to highight some works on efficient agorithms for exact NRBCs for acoustic wave equations, see e.g., [17,, 13, 1, 19]. However, there has been significanty ess study of the NRBCs for Maxwe s equations, where one finds the existing formuations (see e.g., [7, 4]) actuay present a great chaenge for evauation. In this paper, we reformuate the NRBC for the three-dimensiona Maxwe s equations, and extend the techniques for the NRBC of the acoustic wave equation in [, 19] for computing it in a fast and accurate manner. It is important to point out that it is quite generic to integrate this sort of semi-anaytic too with any sover for the interior truncated probem (for exampe, the finite eement/spectra eement methods, and the boundary perturbation technique [16]), with the aid of the Spherepack [1] or certain hybrid mesh interpoation [11]. Typicay, we consider an eectromagnetic scattering probem with a homogeneous background transmission medium, and with a bounded scatterer D. Assume that the source current (or excitation source), other inputs and inhomogeneity of media are supported in a ba of radius b, that is, B :={x R 3 : x <b}. Then the anaytic method of Lapace transform and separation of variabes can be appied to sove the time-dependent Maxwe s system (exterior to B) with free source, homogeneous initia data and the Siver-Muer radiation condition t E T + c ˆx t H=o( x 1 ), t>; c=1/ εµ, (1) where{e, H} are the eectric and magnetic fieds, ˆx= x/ x, and E T = ˆx (E ˆx) is the tangentia component of E. The eectric permittivity ε and magnetic permeabiity µ are positive constants. The underying soution (cf. Hagstrom and Lau [7]) can be expressed in terms of vector spherica harmonic functions (VSHs) with the coefficients determined by the eectric fied on B: ( E= E r m Y m ˆx+ E (1) m S Y m + E () ) m Tm, at r=b, () where the VSHs { Y m ˆx, S Y, m T m := S Y m ˆx } are the orthogona basis of (L (S )) 3 with S being the unit sphere (see e.g., [14]), and { Y m } being the spherica harmonics as normaized in [15]. Note that in
[7], the exact NRBC is expressed as a system of E and H, which is actuay equivaent to the formuation (cf. [4]) by using the VSH notation here: where the eectric-to-magnetic (EtM) operator: T b [E]= c b t E T c ˆx ( E)=T b [E], at r=b, (3) (( ρ E (1) m ) S Y m + ( σ E () ) ) m T m. (4) Here,ρ andσ (termed as the nonrefecting boundary kernes (NRBKs)) are defined by ( ρ (t)=l [z 1 z k (z) )] [ k (z)+z k (z)+ 1 (t), σ (t)=l 1 1+z+z k (z) k (z) ] (t) with z= sb c, (5) wherel 1 is the inverse Lapace transform (in s-domain), and k (z) is the modified spherica Besse function defined by k (z)= /(πz)k +1/ (z), with K +1/ being the modified Besse function of the second kind of order +1/ (cf. []). The invoved convoution is defined as usua: ( f g)(t) = t f (τ)g(t τ)dτ. Now, the centra task is to compute the NRBC in (3)-(5). Notice that the eectric fied E at r=b is unknown as the NRBC serves as the boundary condition for the interior probem. Here, we resort to the Spherepack [1] to communicate between the eectric fied and the VSH expansion coefficients. Thus, some hybrid mesh interpoation technique (cf. [11]) is necessary if the spatia discretization of the interior sover (e.g., the finite/spectra eement methods) uses a different set of grids on the sphere. Thus, the critica issue becomes how to compute the NRBKs in (5), and tempora convoutions in (4) at any time t efficienty. This wi be the topic of the foowing section.. The Agorithm for Computing the NRBC The NRBKσ appears in the NRBC for the transient wave equation, which has an expicit formua (see (9) beow) derived from the Residue theory (see e.g., [7, 19]). However, this anaytic too for inverse Lapace transform can not be appied to computeρ, since we ack information on the zeros of k (z)+zk (z) (i.e., the poes of the integrand in the inverse Lapace transform), whie that of k (z) is avaiabe. In fact, there is no stabe way to directy compute the NRBKρ. A. Aternative formuation oft b [E]. Observe from (4) that the EtM operator ony invoves the VSH expansion coefficients { E (1) (). In fact, there hods the foowing reation between Em r and E(1) m : m, E() m Êm r (s)=(+1) k (z) k (z)+z k Ê(1) (z) m (s), z= sb, at r=b, (6) c where { Êm r (s), Ê(1) m (s)} are Lapace transforms of { Em r, } E(1) m, respectivey. The derivation of (6) is quite invoved, so we wi provide the proof in the extended paper. This eads to the foowing aternative formuation, from which the efficient agorithm stems. Theorem 1. The EtM operatort b [E] in (4) can be reformuated as: T b [E]= c b whereσ is defined in (5), andω is given by ( ω Em r (+1) S Y m + ( σ E () m } in ) ) T m, (7) ω (t)=l [z (1+z+z 1 k (z) )] (t)= b σ k (z) c( (t)+σ ()δ(t) ), z= sb c, (8) withδbeing the Dirac deta function.
B. Expicit formuas of the NRBKsσ andω. As aready mentioned, the NRBKσ appears in the exact NRBC for the wave equation, and the expicit formua derived from the Residue theory (see e.g., [7, 19]) is of the form: σ (t)= c z j b e c b z j t, 1, t, (9) where{z j } are the zeros of K +1/(z). Hence, it foows from (8) that ω (t)= c b (z j ) e b c z j t +δ(t) z j, 1, t. (1) Remark 1. We find from [] that (see Figure 1 (eft)): (i) K +1/ has exacty zeros, which appear in conjugate pairs and ie in the eft-haf of z-pane; and (ii) the zeros approximatey sit aong the boundary of an eye-shaped domain that intersects the imaginary axis approximatey at ±i, and the negative rea axis at a, where a We point out that a practica agorithm in [1] coud be used to find the zeros of K +1/ (z) for any 1 accuratey in negigibe time. Im(z j ) =3 =5 =7 = Re(z ) j Imaginary part =5 =7 = Rea part Figure 1: Left: distributions of the zeros of K +1/ (z). Right: distributions of poes in [](red coor), and used zeros (bue coor), which ies on the right of the vertica dashdot ine βa withβ=.4. Armed with the expicit formuas (9)-(1), we can compute the NRBKs at any time. Observe that as the rea part of z j is negative, e c b z j t becomes exponentiay sma when z j is far away from the imaginary axis and t is sighty arge. This motivates us to drop many insignificant zeros by using the agorithm described in [19] (see Figure 1 (right)). C. Fast agorithms for tempora convoution. Observe from (9)-(1) that the time variabe t ony appears in the exponentias. This aows for a fast recursive tempora convoution as shown in []. More precisey, given a generic function g(t), we define f (t; r) := e c b rt g(t)= t e c b r(t τ) g(τ) dτ, (11) and find t+ t f (t+ t; r)=e c b r t f (t; r)+ e b c r(t+ t τ) g(τ) dτ, (1) t where t is the time step size. We see that at each time step, the computation narrows down to computing the integra of the current interva [t, t + t]. This essentiay eiminates the burden of history dependence induced by the tempora convoution. Using this notion, we deduce from (9)-(11) that [σ g](t)= c t z j e b c z j (t τ) g(τ)dτ= c z j b b f (t; z j ), (13) [ω g](t)= c b t (z j ) e b c z j (t τ) g(τ)dτ+g(t) z j = c b (z j ) f (t; z j )+g(t) z j. (14)
Given g at grids for time discretization, we ony need to store{ f (t; z j )} for previous steps to compute the convoutions at current time. It is optima for storage requirement. D. Summary of the agorithm. For carity, we summarize the whoe agorithm and outine two strategies to further reduce the compexity reated to arge. The agorithm is intended to computet b [E](t) in (7) at t=t n = n t, n, and on the coatitude-ongitude grids adopted by the Spherepack [1] from E on the same grids. Agorithm for computingt b [E] in (7) Step 1. Use the Spherepack to compute { Em r, } E(1) m from E. Step. Compute the zeros{z j } for 1. Step 3. Computeσ E () m andω Em r via (13)-(14). Step 4. Use the Spherepack to computet b [E] via (7). It is cear that the number of zeros to be used is determined by the truncation of the expansion (). If is arge, we can adopt the strategies (i) dropping insignificant zeros (cf. [19]) and (ii) compression agorithm (cf. []) to reduce the compexity in Step 3. Here, we outine the main idea. (i). Since e c b z j t becomes exponentiay sma when z j is far away from the imaginary axis and t is sighty arge, for some t >, we modify the NRBKsσ andω in (9)-(1) as foows σ (t)= c b z j e b c z j t, ω (t)= c b j Υ β (z j ) e b c z j t +δ(t) j Υ β z j, t>t, (15) whereυ β = { z j : Re(z j ) βa} with a.6674 andβ (, 1) (β tunes the number of used zeros). We pot in Figure 1 (right) the used zeros forβ=.4. This can reduce the zeros from 1 to 1 (see the marker on the right of vertica dashdot ine) and eads to quite accurate approximation. We refer to the anaysis in [19] on how to adjustβand t to achieve a good accuracy. (ii). Apert et a. [] proposed a compression technique by a rationa approximation of the NRBK in s-domain, which required to sove a noninear east square probem. This ed to the approximate poes{ z d j }d with d (see Figure 1 (right, marked by ) with a reduction from =1 to d=1 and error toerance 1 8 ). Correspondingy,σ andω coud be approximated by ˆσ (t)= c b d α d j e b c zd j t, ˆω (t)= c b d α d j zd j e b c zd j t +δ(t) d α d j, t>, (16) where{α d j }d are the coefficients occurring in the rationa partia fraction:αd j /(s c zd j /b). Some sampes of{α d j, zd j }d are avaiabe from the website: 3. Numerica Resuts and Discussions In this section, we provide some numerica exampes to show the accuracy of computing the NRBC. We aso test a spectra-gaerkin with (second-order) Newmark s time integration for Maxwe s equations in a spherica she{a< x <b}, where the NRBC is set at the outer spherica surface r=b. In the foowing tests, we generate the exact soution through the fied: ( ˆx E) r=a = g, and with homogeneous initia data and source term. More precisey, we take g(θ,φ, t)= [ ( [ c sin 6 (6t) g m,1 S Y m + L 1 sa + k (sa/c) ] ) ] (t) sin 8 (4t) g m, k (sa/c) Tm,
where{g m,1, gm, } are the expansion coefficients in terms of{ S Y, m T m }, of the the function (( ( g(θ,φ)=b cos x 1 x ) ) 5 x 3 + (, x ( ) ) 3 3 sin x1 x + 1 ( ( ) ) 7), x 1.5 cos x x Note that x=(x 1, x, x 3 ) (with x =1) is the corresponding Cartesian coordinates. Here, we compute {g m,1, gm, } accuratey by using the Spherepack [1]. We first test the accuracy of the agorithm for the NRBC (3). Let E N be the truncated exact soution E (the incuded modes are 1 N θ ; m ). Define the error: e(b, t)= ( t ET N c ˆx ( EN ) ) T b [E N ], (17) Nθ,N φ where Nθ,N φ denotes the discrete L -norm associated with N θ N φ coatitude and ongitude grids. Here, we take a=, c=5, N θ = 4 and N φ = N θ. We aim to test the accuracy for computingt b [E N ], so the differentiations in t and cur are cacuated anayticay. In Tabe 1, we tabuate e(b, t) for different t and b (note: the magnitude of E is actuay between 1 and, so the waves cross the artificia boundary). We see that in a cases, the computation of the NRBC is very accurate. Tabe 1: The error e(b, t) for different t and b t b=3 b=5 b=5 b= E E E E E E E E E E E E E E E E-13 Next, we set the NRBC as the boundary condition and sove the Maxwe s equation in cur-cur formuation with homogeneous initia conditions and free source in a spherica she. In this case, we can expand the interior eectric fied in VSHs, and reduce the probem to a sequence of equations in radia direction. Then we sove the systems by using the spectra-gaerkin method in space and the second-order Newmark scheme in time. Moreover, we use the Richardson extrapoation to improve the time discretization to fourth-order. We refer to [19] for simiar idea for the acoustic wave equations, and report the detais in the extended version. Under the same setting of the reference soution and other data, we provide in Tabe, the discrete L -norm errors (in space with sufficient resoution): Err(t) (Newmark scheme), Err R (t) (Richardson extrapoation), and the convergence order in time at different time t. As expected, we observe the secondorder convergence for the Newmark scheme and the fourth-order convergence for the extrapoation. We have proposed in this paper an efficient agorithm for computing the spherica NRBC for the Maxwe s equations. This too can be integrated we with various interior sovers in bounded domain for simuating scattering probems in many situations. We wi report the works aong this ine in the forthcoming papers.
