1 Analytic solutions and Singularity formation for the Peakon b Family equations arxiv:.4983v [math.ap] 3 Feb G. M. Coclite, F. Gargano, and V. Sciacca Abstract. Using the Abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski Theorem we prove that the b-family equation admits, locally in time, a unique analytic solution. Moreover, if the initial data is real analytic and it belongs to H s with s > 3/, and the momentum density u u, does not change sign, we prove that the solution stays analytic globally in time, for b. Using pseudospectral numerical methods, we study, also, the singularity formation for the b-family equations with the singularity tracking method. This method allows us to follow the process of the singularity formation in the comple plane as the singularity approaches the real ais, estimating the rate of decay of the Fourier spectrum. Spectral Analysis and Comple singularities and b-family equation and Analytic Solution and Abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem. Introduction In 3 Holm and Staley [3, 4] introduced, as a one-dimensional version of active fluid transport, the b-family equation (.) m t + um }{{} + bmu =, }{{} t >, R, convection stretching where b is a real parameter, u = u(,t) the fluid velocity, and m = u u the momentum density. The quadratic terms in (.) represent the competition and balance, in fluid convection between nonlinear transport and amplification due to b-dimensional stretching. The parameter b characterizes the equations because it is the ratio of stretching to convective transport and also the number of covariant dimensions associated with the momentum density m. Within this family of evolutionary equations we have both the Camassa-Holm equation [4, 5] in correspondence of b= and the Degasperis-Procesi equation [8] in correspondence of b = 3 as special cases. Using the method of asymptotic integrability, it has been shown that these are the unique two cases in which (.) is completely integrable [8]. A quite complete list of references on the Camassa- Holm, the Degasperis-Procesi equations and the b family equations can be found in [6, 7, 5, 6, 7, 8]. We can rewrite (.) is the following third order form in terms only of the unknown u (.) u t u t +(b+)uu = bu u +uu, t >, R. Moreover, (.) and (.) are also equivalent to the following hyperbolic elliptic system (.3) u t +uu +P =, P +P = b u + 3 b u.
2 G. M. COCLITE, F. GARGANO, AND V. SCIACCA Since e /is thegreen s function ofthe Helmholtz operator wecan rewrite (.3) in the following integro-differential form e y ( b u t +uu + sign(y ) u (y,t)+ 3 b ) u (y,t) dy =. R In this paper we are concerned with the initial value problem associated to (.), therefore we augment the equation with the initial condition (.4) u(,) = u (), R. Assuming that u H s (R), s > 3, u u, has constant sign using the Kato s theory and giving a precise description of the blow-up scenario, Gui, Liu, and Tian proved the eistence of global in time solutions. The rest of the paper is organized as follows. In Section. we introduce the functional spaces in which our results hold. Section. is devoted to the local in time eistence of solutions for the Cauchy problem associated to (.). The eistence of global in time analytical solution for (.) is proved in Section 3. In Section 4 we analyze the singularity formation using the singularity tracking method for different values of b >.. Local in time result.. Functional settings and the ACK Theorem. In this section we introduce the functional spaces where local in time analyticity for the b-family equations will be proved (see [7][8][]). We consider a comple variable, with R and I respectively its real and imaginary part. We consider f() a comple function analytic in (.) D(ρ) = { C : I ρ} and f L (Γ(I)) for I ( ρ,ρ). The path where the L integration is performed is: (.) Γ(b) = { C : I = b}. This means that if I is inside ( ρ,ρ), then f(r + ii) is a square integrable function of R. We denote by H,ρ the set of comple functions f() with the above properties and such that (.3) f ρ = sup f( +ii) L (Γ(I)) < I ( ρ,ρ) is satisfied. We denote by H k,ρ the space of all comple functions f() such that (.4) j f H,ρ, for j k; and f k,ρ = i f ρ. j k In term of the Fourier transform ˆf(ξ) of f, the previous norm can be rewritten as ( / (.5) f k,ρ = e ρ ξ (+ ξ ) k ˆf(ξ) dξ). We denote by H,ρ β,t the space of all functions f(,t) C ([,T],H,ρ ) and f,ρ,β,t = sup f(,t),ρ βt + sup t f(,t),ρ βt + sup f(,t),ρ βt t T t T t T is finite. In an analogous way, H k,ρ β,t is the space of all functions f C k ([,T],H k,ρ ) and f k,ρ,β,t <.
3 ANALYTIC SOLUTIONS AND SINGULARITY FORMATION FOR THE PEAKON B FAMILY EQUATIONS3 We conclude this section recalling the ACK theorem in the form given by Safonov []. Consider the problem u = F(u,t), where u X ρ and X ρ is a Banach space with norm denoted by ρ. Theorem. ACK Theorem: Suppose that R >, ρ >, and β > such that if < t ρ /β, the following properties hold: () for all < ρ < ρ ρ and u X ρ such that sup t T u(,t) ρ R, the map F(u,t) : [,T] X ρ is continuous; () for all < ρ < ρ the function F(,t) : [,ρ /β ] {u X ρ : sup u(,t) ρ R} t T is continous and F(,t) ρ R < R; (3) for all < ρ < ρ(s) ρ and for all w and u {u X ρ : sup t T u(,t) ρ βt R}, results F(u,t) F(w,t) ρ C t u w ρ(s) ρ(s) ρ ds; then there eists β > β such that for all < ρ < ρ equation () has a unique solution u(,t) X ρ with t [,(ρ ρ)/β ] and moreover sup ρ<ρ βt u(,t) ρ R... First main theorem: short time eistence of analytic solution. In this section we proof the following first main theorem: Theorem. Local in time analyticity: Let the initial data for the b-family u H,ρ. Then there eists β > such that for any ρ, with < ρ < ρ, there eists a unique continuously differentiable w.r.t. time solution u of the b-family equation with the following property: [ u(,t) H,ρ and t u(,t) H,ρ, when t, ρ ρ β Proof. We apply the abstract Cauchy-Kovalevskaya (ACK) theorem to the b-family equation to prove the short time eistence of analytic solution. We remand to [8] for the details and here we give only a sketch of the proof. To apply the ACK theorem to the b-family equation, we write the b-family equation as: (.6) u t +uu = A ( b u + 3 b u where A = ( ), and, with an integration in time, we transform (.6) in (.7) u = F(u,t), F(u,t) = u ), ]. with [ ( b uu +A u + 3 b ) u t ] dt. It is clear that properties and of the ACK theorem are satisfied by the operator F(u,t) given in (.7). For the validity of hypothesis 3, one considers first the norm F(u,t),ρ, where the bound is easily obtained using the following estimates which are a direct consequence of the Cauchy estimate on the derivative of analytic function ([7][]): Lemma. Let u,w H,ρ and ρ < ρ, then uw wu,ρ c u w,ρ ρ ρ. Finally, the bound on F(u,t),ρ is obtained using the fact that the operator A is bounded.
4 4 G. M. COCLITE, F. GARGANO, AND V. SCIACCA 3. Global in time analyticity In this section we prove that the b-family equation admits a strong solution in Gevrey-class functional space of inde. This analysis gives an eplicit lower bound on the shrinking of the radius of analyticity of the solution of the b-family equation with given analytical initial data, and assuming suitable regularity in Sobolev space. We consider the space D(A r e ρa ), which consists of the real restriction of comple analytic functions on the strip D(ρ). The operator A r e ρa is the Gevrey operator with A = ( ). The space D(A r e ρa ) is equivalent to the space H r,ρ defined in section., with norm given by (.5), then we define the Gevrey class G of inde by (see [6]): (3.) G = ρ>h r,ρ. We suppose that the initial data u D(A r e ρa ), with ρ and r positive. In this section we prove the following second main theorem: Theorem 3. Global in time analyticity: Let b and A = ( ). Let u D(A r e ρa ), with r > 3/, ρ > and m = u u does not change sign. Then the unique solution u of the b-family equation lies in Gevrey class of inde globally in time. Proof. We start the energy type estimate on D(A r e ρa ) for the b-family equation. Supposing that ρ is a decreasing, positive C function of the time t with ρ() = ρ, we consider the L -scalar product of the b-family equation (.6) with A r e ρa u: (3.) d dt Ar e ρa u ρ A r+/ e ρa u = ( b = A r e ρa uu,a r e ρa u + A r e ρa u + 3 b ) u,a r e ρa u A r e ρa uu,a r e ρa u + b Ar e ρa( u ),Ar e ρa u + b 3 A r e ρa( u ),Ar e ρa u. Now, we start to estimate the three terms on the second member of (3.), I = A r e ρa uu,a r e ρa u, I = A r e ρa( u ),Ar e ρa u and I 3 = A r e ρa( ) u,ar e ρa u. From Lemma 3 below, we have (3.3) I C A r u 3 +C ρ A r e ρa u A r+/ e ρa u. Using Cauchy estimate and Lemma below we obtain: (3.4) I A r e ρa u,a r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u 3 C A r u 3 +ρc A r+/3 e ρa u 3 C A r u 3 +ρc ( A r e ρa u /3 A r+/ e ρa u /3) 3 C A r u 3 +ρc A r e ρa u A r+/ e ρa u ;
5 ANALYTIC SOLUTIONS AND SINGULARITY FORMATION FOR THE PEAKON B FAMILY EQUATIONS5 (3.5) I 3 A r e ρa u,a r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u A r e ρa u 3 C A r u 3 +ρc A r+/3 e ρa u 3 C A r u 3 +ρc ( A r e ρa u /3 A r+/ e ρa u /3) 3 C A r u 3 +ρc A r e ρa u A r+/ e ρa u. Collecting all the previous estimates (3.3),(3.5) and (3.6), we obtain d (3.6) dt Ar e ρa u ( ρ+c ρ A r e ρa u ) A r+/ e ρa u +C A r u 3, where constants C and C depend only on b and ρ. The last inequality (3.6) implies that u D(A r e ρa ) with (3.7) ρ(t) = ρ e C t ( A r e ρ A u +C ( t Ar u 3 dt )) dt. To prove the global in time analyticity of the solution u, it is necessary to have a priori Sobolev estimate on A r u. To do that we use the global eistence result for the b-family equation, given by the result of Lemma (4) below. Lemma. Let ρ and let u,v D(A r e ρa ) with r > /; and let w D(A r+s e ρa ), with ρ,r,s. There eists constants C,C and C, depending only on r, such that A r e ρa (uv) C A r e ρa u A r e ρa v ; where is the usual L norm. Proof. See [6]. A r e ρa w C A r w +ρc A r+s e ρa w. Lemma 3. Let v D(A r e ρa ) and u D(A r+/ e ρa ), with ρ and r > 3/, then there eists constants C and C, depending only on r, such that A r e ρa vu,a r e ρa u C A r v A r u +C ρ A r e ρa v A r+/ e ρa u. Proof. See [] and [8]. Lemma 4. Let b and let u H s (R) L (R), with s > 3/ and m = u u does not change sign, then the corresponding solution does eists globally. Proof. See [] for the proof. 4. Singularity formation for the b-family equation In this section we present the analysis of the singularity formation for the b- family equation using the singularity tracking method for different values of the parameter b. The singularity tracking method is based on the following Laplace asymptotic formula (see [5]) for the Fourier spectrum of a comple function u(z): (4.) û k C k (+α) ep( δ k )ep(i k ), where z = + iδ is the nearest comple singularity to the real ais, α is the algebraic type, and at the singularity u(z) (z z ) α. Therefore an estimation of δ and gives the comple location of the singularity. Resolving the rate of algebraic decay + α, one can classify the singularity type. In particular, when one deals with a PDE with solution u(t), if at a critic time t s results that δ(t s ) = then the width of analyticity of the solution is zero and one can observe a blow up of the solution or a blow up of its derivatives. The reader is invited to see [3, 9,,,, 3, 4] for more details on this method.
6 6 G. M. COCLITE, F. GARGANO, AND V. SCIACCA To apply the singularity tracking method to the b-family, we numerically solve the equations in the spatial domain [ π, π], employing periodic boundary conditions. We write the b-family equations in pseudodifferential form u t +uu = A ( b u + 3 b u and the dynamic of the kth Fourier mode of u is described by the following ODE [ (4.) t û k = (uu ) k + ik ( b (u +k ) k + 3 b )] (u ) k. Dividing the time interval [,T] in N sub intervals of size t = T/N, we approimate the solution u as u(,n t) K/ k= K/ û n k eik ; and we solve the system of ODEs (4.) using eplicit Runge Kutta method of the 4th order with initial conditions given by û k = û k, where û k are the Fourier coefficients of the initial data u(,) = u (). The reader is referred to [9] for the analysis of the convergence properties of this numerical scheme for the Camassa Holm equation case, which is the b-family equation with b =. The estimation ofthe parametersc, α and δ in the Laplaceasymptotic formula (4.) is performed with the technique of the sliding fitting with length 3 (see [3, 9, 9,, 3] for details). This procedure is based on the local estimation of the wanted values for each k mode, by the formulas: ) û k+ log(ûk û α(k) = k (4.3) ( ), (4.4) (4.5) δ(k) = log [ log k (k )(k+) ( ûk û k+ ) +αlog ), ( )] k, k + logc(k) = log û k +α(k)log(k)+kδ(k). The asymptotic values for large k can be computed with an etrapolation process using the epsilon algorithm of Wynn (see [9]), giving the wanted values C, α and δ. For all the numerical simulations we shall present in this work, we have used up to 496 Fourier modes calculated with 3-digit(using the ARPREC package[]). 4.. Numerical solutions. For the numerical results we consider two different initial data: the first one is u = sin() and the second one is u = +sin(), and in the sequel we call them type I e II respectively. These initial conditions does not satisfy the hypothesis of theorem, therefore the solutions are candidate to develop a singularity in a finite time. This work want to etend the results found in [9], where the singularities formation for Camassa Holm equation was analyzed. In particular, for initial condition of type I, Camassa Holm equation develops a singularity in a finite time of algebraic type 3/5, weaker with respect to the cubic root singularity developed by Burgers equation [4], probably due to the presence of the dispersive terms. For initial condition of type II, Camassa Holm equation develops in a finite time singularity of algebraic type /3, which is the behavior of the peakons solution for Camassa Holm equation.

The behaviors in time of the numerical solutions and their derivatives of the Degasperi Procesi equation with initial condition I and II, are shown respectively in Fig. and Fig.. The critical times when singularities develop are respectively t s =.895 and t s = At these critical times, it is evident a blow up of the first derivatives of the solutions. The analysis of the singularities formation and their characterization is remanded in the sequel, where we perform a complete analysis for all the b-family equations. 5. Classifications of comple singularities: initial data u = sin(). In this section we report the results obtained by applying the singularity tracking method to the b family equation with initial datum of type I. In Fig.3 it is shown the behavior in time of the spectrum of the Degasperi Procesi numerical solution (b = 3), starting at time t =.35 up to singularity time

SCIACCA t s =.895 with increments of.5: at critical time t s the spectrum totally loss eponential decay, as a singularity of cubic root type hits the real ais, with the blow up of the first derivative of the solution. The etrapolation of δ(t) and α(t) (on Fig.4) is obtained by the sliding fitting procedure of length 3 log u k 5 b=3 u =sin() k Figure 3. On the bottom, the evolution in time of the algebraic character α. The algebraic character at singularity time is α(t s ) =.33. We have also performed several other numerical simulations for the initial condition I, by varying the parameter b >. We have obtained that in each case a singularity develops in a finite time, and in Fig.5 and Fig.6 the algebraic character of the singularities and the times of singularity formation are shown with respect to the parameter b. We remember that for b = the solution for the initial datum of type I is a traveling wave solution, and therefore in this case the solution is globally analytic in time.

In this section we report the results obtained by applying the singularity tracking method to the b-family equation with initial datum of type II. In Fig.7 it is shown the behavior in time of the spectrum of of the Degasperi Procesi numerical solution, starting at time t =.4 up to singularity time t s =.8875 with increments of.5. On Fig.8 the evolutions in time of the width of the analyticity strip δ and the algebraic character α are shown. One can see that at the singularity time t s =.8875 the algebraic character is α(t s ) =.4, meaning that a blow up of the first derivative of the solution occurs. The results are also obtained by applying the sliding fitting procedure with length 3. Also for the initial condition of type II we have performed several other numerical simulations by varying the parameter b. The singularity time and the algebraic character of the singularities are shown in Fig.9 and Fig. w.r.t the parameter b. As observed in the case of the initial condition of type I, for b = the solution for the initial data of type II is a traveling wave solution, and therefore the solution is globally analytic in time.

On the bottom, the evolution in time of the algebraic character α. The algebraic character at singularity time is α(t s ) = Conclusions In this paper we have considered the b-family equations, introduced by Holm and Staley [3, 4]. Our main interest has been to show the well-posedness of the b-family equation in analytic function spaces. Using the Abstract Cauchy- Kowalewski Theorem, we prove that the b-family equation admits a unique analytic solution, both locally in time (Theorem ()) then globally in time (Theorem (3)). An interesting problem in the theory of PDEs is the singularity formation and how to detect it from a numerical point of view. One of the most effective method to achieve this goal is the singularity tracking method. It consists to follow the singularity in the comple plane before the appearance as a blow up of the solution. The distance of the singularity from the real ais can be estimated through the study of the eponential rate of decay of the Fourier spectrum. The algebraic character of the singularity is determinate, instead, by the the study of the algebraic rate of decay of the Fourier spectrum. We use numerical pseudospectral methods to
