Serdica Math J 25 (999), NULL CONDITION FOR SEMILINEAR WAVE EQUATION WITH VARIABLE COEFFICIENTS Fabio Catalano Communicated by V Petkov Abstract In this work we analyse the nonlinear Cauchy problem ( tt )u(t, x) = ( ( λg + O ( + t + x ) a )) t,x u(t, x), t,x u(t, x), whit initial data u(, x) = ǫ u (x), u t (, x) = ǫ u (x) We assume a, x R n (n 3) and g the matrix related to the Minkowski space It can be considerated a pertubation of the case when the quadratic term has constant coefficient λg (see Klainerman [6]) We prove a global existence and uniqueness theorem for very regular initial data The proof avoids a direct application of Klainermann method (Null condition, energy conformal method), because the result is obtained by a combination beetwen the energy estimate (norm L 2 ) and the decay estimate (norm L ) 99 Mathematics Subject Classification: 35L5 Key words: wave equation, conformal group, energy estimates, hyperbolic rotations, nonlinear Cauchy problem, null condition, Sobolev spaces, Von Wahl estimates The author was partially supported by MURST Progr Nazionale Problemi Non Lineari
322 Fabio Catalano Introduction In this work we study the nonlinear Cauchy problem for the wave equation () ( tt )u(t,x) = F(t,x, t,x u(t,x)), u(,x) = ǫu (x), u t (,x) = ǫu (x) Here x R n, the space dimension is n 3 and the nonlinear term F(t,x,w) is assumed to be a quadratic function in w with variable coefficients depending on t, x This quadratic form we can represent as follows F(t,x,w) = Q(t,x)w,w, where w R n+ and, denotes the scalar product in R n+ For the matrix Q(t,x) we assume ( Q(t,x) = λg + O ( + t + x ) a where a, a is an integer, and g is the matrix related to the Minkowski space R n+ g = The constant coefficient case, that is Q(t,x) = λg, was studied by S Klainerman: Theorem [SKlainerman, 984] If u (x),u (x) C (Rn ) and the nonlinear term F(t,x, t,x u(t,x)) satisfies the Null Condition, there is ǫ, sufficiently small, so that, for all < ǫ ǫ, the solution of the Cauchy problem () with Q(t,x) = λg exists in the class C (R + R n ) Remark The choice Q(t,x) = λg in the above theorem of Klainerman is closely connected with the null condition definition (see [4, 6]) Recall that the quadratic form Qw, w ),
Null condition for semilinear wave equation 323 (Q being a constant symmetric matrix) satisfies the null condition, if the condition gw,w = implies that Qw,w = Therefore, for any null co-vector w (ie on the surface gw, w = ) we have Q w, w = Our goal is to study the case when Q(t,x) has additional perturbation term of type ( ) O ( + t + x ) a Under the assumption a, a an integer, we aim at proving the existence of global solution for the Cauchy problem () with small initial data ǫu (x),ǫu (x) C (Rn ) It seems that the case of quadratic form with variable coefficients needs a specific approach, since the method of Klainerman (see [6]) can not be applied directly for this case More precisely, we need a suitable apriori estimate for quadratic forms with variable coefficients Nevertheless, exploiting the fact that the decay rate of the perturbed coefficients is a we are able to adapt the method of Klainerman for this problem Our main result is the following Theorem Let n 3, u (x),u (x) C (Rn ) and s 2([n/2] + 2) There is ǫ = ǫ ( u H s, u H s ), sufficiently small, so that, for all < ǫ ǫ, there exists a unique solution to the Cauchy problem () u(t,x) C s k ([,+ [;H k (R n )) k=,,s Moreover we have the decay estimate u(t, ) L (R n ) C ( + t) n 2 The main idea of the proof is based on a combination between energy inequality and decay estimates A direct application of Klainerman method is complicated due to the fact we have variable coefficients Moreover, modifiyng the pointwise estimates from Klainerman it is possible to obtein a suitable estimate for F(t,x, t,x u(t,x)) L x
324 Fabio Catalano On the basis of a direct application of Fourier transform we establish conformal energy estimate for the solution and its higher derivatives A combination beetwen this energy estimate and decay estimate for wave equation leads to global existence result and gives also informations about the decay of solution of nonlinear wave equation The plan of the work is the following In Section we present the differential operators of Poincarè group In Section 2 we give some L estimates about the nonlinear term F(t,x, t,x u(t,x)) In Section 3 we prove a generalized energy estimate and, finally, in Section 4 we show the global existence of the solution to the problem () Remark 2 It s possible to improve the estimates presented in this work In fact, in Theorem we need s 2([n/2]+2); this follows because we use a subset (the Poincarè group and the radial scalar field (Scaling)) of the conformal group The generators of the Poincarè group We consider the Minkowski space R R n with x = t, x = (x,,x n ) and g = If x = (x,x) R R n, the metrics in the Minkowski space is defined by (2) [x] 2 = g ab x a x b = t 2 x 2, where x is the euclidean metrics Set = t and i = xi, for i =,,n We have (3) ( tt ) = g ab a b, with a,b =,,,n Let s introduce the following differential operators: the classical partial derivates a, for a =,,,n,
Null condition for semilinear wave equation 325 the spatial rotations Ω ij = x i j x j i, for i,j =,,n, the spatial-time rotations Ω i = t i + x i t, for i =,,n, the radial vector field (Scaling) S = t t + x + + x n n It s clear that these operators satisfy the standard commutative proper- a) [Ω ab,( tt )] =, for a,b =,,,n, b) [S,( tt )] = 2( tt ), c) [S,Ω ab ] =, for a,b =,,,n, d) [S, a ] = a, for a =,,,n Therefore,we can choose A as the family of operators whose elements are: ties: Ω = {Ω ab } a,b=,,n, = { a } a=,,n, and the scalar field S In this way, A results a subset of the conformal group Let s now denote z = {z k } k=,,p A We are able to introduce a generalized Sobolev norm, as follows: (4) u(t, ) 2 z,s = z α u(t, ) 2 L 2 (R n ), α s where (5) z α = α z k k k=,,p 2 Preliminary results Let us consider the Cauchy problem ( ( )) ( tt )u(t,x) = λg + o ( + t + x ) a t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x), (6) u(,x) = ǫu (x), u t (,x) = ǫu (x) In order to obtain a-priori estimate for the quadratic term (7) λg t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) = λ ( t u(t,x) 2 + x u(t,x) 2)
326 Fabio Catalano we use the generator (8) Ω i = t i + x i t, and we express the usual partial derivatives as follows (9) Substituting in (7), we get i = Ω i t x i t t λg t,x u, t,x u = = λ tu t t u + x i i u + Ω i u i u t t i n i n = = λ tu t Su + Ω i u i u t i n Therefore, for t > and Ω = (Ω,,Ω n ), we have the estimate () λg t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) C( λ ) t (S,Ω )u(t,x) t,x u(t,x) Remark 3 For t = the estimate () is not valid: in fact, the identity (9) works well only for t On the other hand, for t + x +, ( () O (+t+ x ) a ) t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) (+t+ x ) a t,x u(t,x) 2 Remark 4 By the Huygens principle (the support of u(t,x) travels in this way: x R + t ), we find (2) ( + t + x ) a ( + t) a If we want to give similar estimates for t near,we have to modify (9) For this, we proceed as follows We divide (8) for ( + t): (3) Ω i + t = t i + t + x i t + t,
Null condition for semilinear wave equation 327 and we express the partial derivatives as follows (4) i = i + t + Ω i + t x i t + t By a straightforward calculation, we get λg t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) [( λg t u, x ) ( t u +t,, x n t u +, Ω u +t +t,, Ω )] nu,( t u, u,, n u) + +t (4) + λg (, u + t,, ) nu,( t u, u,, n u) + t Now, the first term in the right side of the above expression is equal to λ ( tu) 2 x t u + t u x n t u + t nu + Ω u + t u + + Ω nu + t nu = = λ tu ( + t) t u + x i i u + Ω i u + t + t iu i n i n λ tu t t u + x i i u + Ω i u + t + t iu + λ tu + t tu i n i n From this estimates it follows that this term is not greater than C( λ ) + t (S,Ω )u t,x u + C( λ ) + t tu t u (5) For the second term in the right side of (4) we have ( u λg, + t,, ) nu,( t u, u,, n u) C( λ ) + t + t xu 2 Therefore, for any t, we give the estimate (6) λg t,x u(t,x),, t,x u(t,x) C( λ ) + t (S,Ω,Ω, t, x )u(t,x) t,x u(t,x)
328 Fabio Catalano So, by () and (6), we obtein a suitable estimate for F(t,x, t,x u(t,x)) = Q(t,x) t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x), where ( Q(t,x) = λg + O ( + t + x ) a This is our main a priori estimate for the quadratic non-linearity ) 3 Generalized energy estimate The classical energy estimate for (7) ( tt )u(t,x) = F(t,x), u(, x) =, u t (,x) = gives t,x u(t, ) L 2 C ds F(s, ) L 2 To control the L 2 norm of the solution u(t,x) to problem (7), one can use the conformal energy method developed by Klainerman (see [6]) But, in this section, our approach is more direct and simplified In fact we shall use Fourier transform û(t,ξ) = dxe ixξ u(t,x) in combination with the Hardy inequality In particular, we prove Lemma If supp(f(s,y)) { y s+r}, we can establish for problem (7) the estimate u(t, ) L 2 C ds(r + s) F(s, ) L 2 To prove Lemma, we cite Lemma 2 Let χ(t,ξ) be an integrable function with respect to the time and space Then t ds χ(s, ) ds χ(s, ) L 2 L 2 ξ ξ
Null condition for semilinear wave equation 329 Proof of L emma 2 We have ( ( d t ) 2 ) dξ ds χ(s,ξ) = dt R n ( ) = 2 dξ χ(t, ξ) ds χ(s,ξ) ; R n By Scwhartz inequality, the last term is less than 2 ds χ(s, ) χ(t, ) L 2; L 2 ξ ξ By integrating with respect to t, we prove Lemma 2 Proof o f L emma By using the Fourier transform, problem (7) becomes tt û(t,ξ) + ξ 2 û(t,ξ) = The Duhamels principle gives û(t,ξ) = In a standard way, we find û(t,ξ) ds sin ((t s) ξ ) ξ û(, ξ) =, û t (,ξ) = ˆF(t,ξ), sin((t s) ξ ) ds ˆF(s,ξ) ξ ˆF(s,ξ) ds ˆF(s,ξ) ξ and ( R n dξ û(t,ξ) 2 ) ( 2 t dξ R n ds ˆF(s,ξ) ξ ) 2 2 The Plancharel identity u(t, ) L 2 x = (2π) n/2 û(t, ) L 2 ξ
33 Fabio Catalano in combination with Lemma 2, give u(t, ) L 2 x C ds ˆF(s,ξ) ξ L 2 ξ Now, by the Huygens principle, it s clear that, for every fixed s, F(s,x) C (Rn ) For this, its Fourier transform with respect to the space decay very rapidly at infinity We apply the Hardy inequality (we are working in the case n = 3) and we get: ˆF(s,ξ) ds C ds ξ ξ ˆF(s,ξ) L 2 ξ L 2 ξ Since ξ ˆF(s,ξ) = i ˆ (xf)(ξ), we finally prove that u(t, ) L 2 x C C ds xf(s,x) L 2 x ds(r + s) F(s,x) L 2 { x R+s} Our next step is to obtein higher order derivative estimates involving the operators in the family A This complete the proof of the global existence and uniqueness to the solution of problem () Let s denote, for semplicity, z = (Ω,Ω,S, t, x ) (8) Proposition We have the following energy estimate: z α u(t, ) L 2 (R n ) C z α u(, ) L 2 (R n ) + α s α s +C α s ds( + s) z α F(s, ) L 2 (R n ) Let s recall, for the moment, the commutative properties ) [( tt ),Ω ij ] =, for i,j =,,n, 2) [( tt ),Ω i ] =, for i =,,n, 3) [( tt ),S] = 2( tt )
Null condition for semilinear wave equation 33 Proof of Proposition In general, for the problem (9) ( tt )u(t,x) = F(t,x), u(,x) = u (x), u t (,x) = u (x), we know the standard estimate for the solution u(t,x): (2) u(t, ) L 2 C u(, ) L 2 + C ds y F(s, ) L 2 Remark 5 As we said before, S Klainerman proved similar energy estimates by using the energy conformal method Here, instead, we have initial data with compact support and F(t,x, t,x u(t,x)) is a quadratic term in t,x u(t,x) We can therefore only work with Fourier transform We proceed in the proof of Proposition We analyse two different cases: ) If Γ = α x or k t or Ω or Ω, then [( tt ),Γ] = and (2) ( tt )Γ α u(t,x) = Γ α F(t,x), with initial data Γ α u(,x) and Γ α u t (,x); 2) If, instead, we have the operator S, then (22) ( tt )Su(t,x) = (2 + S)F(t,x), with initial data Su(,x) and Su t (,x) (23) So, in general, for z = (Ω,Ω,S, t, x ), ( tt )z α u(t,x) = β α C α β zβ F(t,x), with initial data z α u(,x) e z α u t (,x) By denoting u (α) (t,x) = z α u(t,x) and F (α) (t,x) = β α C α β zβ F(t,x),
332 Fabio Catalano we find (see (2)) (24) u (α) (t, ) L 2 C u (α) (, ) L 2 + C The Huygens principle states that (25) z α u(t, ) L 2 C z α u(, ) L 2 + C or, equivalently, α s z α u(t, ) L 2 C z α u(, ) L 2 + C and that (26) Finally z α u(t, ) L 2 C α s We recall that ( ( F(t,x, t,x u) = λg + o ds y F (α) (s, ) L 2 ds ( + s) β α ds ( + s) z α u(, ) L 2+C ( + t + x ) a α s β α Cβ α zβ F(s, ) C α β L 2 z β F(s, ) L 2 ds (+s) z α F(s, ) L 2 )) t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) λg t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) C( λ ) + t (S,Ω,Ω, t, x )u(t,x) t,x u(t,x) Moreover, if we consider the higher derivatives, we find z α λg t,x u, t,x u = λ z β g z γ t,x u,z δ t,x u = = λ γ+δ=α β+γ+δ=α C α γ,δ C α β,γ,δ g z γ t,x u,z δ t,x u Before getting on in the proof of Proposition, we need to prove the identity (27) z α t,x u = C β t,x z β u β α
Null condition for semilinear wave equation 333 Proof of identity (27) For simplicity, we show that [ t,x,(ω,ω,s, t, x )] = c i i i=,,n In fact it s sufficient to show that [ i,ω km ] = [ i,x k m ] [ i,x m k ] = δ ik m δ im k with c i the Kronecker deltas (28) By using (27) we write (26) in the equivalent expression λ g t,x z γ u, t,x z δ u γ+δ α C α γ,δ So λ g t,x z γ u, t,x z δ C( λ ) (29) u +t (S,Ω,Ω, t, x )z γ u(t,x) t,x z δ u(t,x) and, in L 2 norm, (3) λ g t,x z γ u, t,x z δ u L 2 C( λ ) + t (S,Ω,Ω, t, x )z γ u(t, ) L 2 t,x z δ u(t, ) L On the other hand, ( o ( + t + x ) a ) t,x u(t, ), t,x u(t, ) L 2 ( + t + x ) a t,x u(t, ) L t,x u(t, ) L 2 and, for generical derivatives z α we proceed as follows First, we consider ( ) z o α (3) ( + t + x ) a t,x u(t,x), t,x u(t,x) = = α +α 2 +α 3 =α ( ) z α ( + t + x ) a (z α 2 t,x u(t,x)) (z α 3 t,x u(t,x)) ;
334 Fabio Catalano then, we exchange, by (27), z α with t,x Finally we prove: zβ ( + t + x ) a C (32) ( + t + x ) a for every z β Proof o f i dentity (32) We consider, for semplicity, z = Ω i = t i + x i t ; in this case we get (t i + x i t ) ( + t + x ) a a t ( + t + x ) a+ + a x ( + t + x ) a+ Since supp(u(t,x)) { x + t}, for t + x +, the expression above decay as C ( + t) a (33) Therefore, for n = 3, α s ( o zα α s γ+δ α C α γ,δ ( + t + x ) a ) t,x u(t, ), t,x u(t, ) ( + t) a t,x z γ u(t, ) L 2 t,x z δ u(t, ) L, where we can also assume that γ s/2 This complete the proof of Proposition 4 The global existence In this last section we prove the global existence of the solution to the problem () For this purpose we use the continuation principle of differential equations Let s define (34) f(t) = z α u(t, ) L 2 and (35) We first prove: (36) g(t) = α s α s/2 ( + t) z α u(t, ) L f(t) Cǫ + dτ f(τ)g(τ) ( + τ) L 2
