Ode s Lemm for Reulr Tree Lues rxiv: v1 [cs.cc] 23 Oct Itroductio Mrco Kuhlm Dept. of Liuistics d Philoloy Uppsl Uiversity, Swede 29th October 2018 Pumpi lemmt re elemetry tools for the lysis of forml lues. While they usully cot be mde stro eouh to fully cpture clss of lues, it is eerlly desirble to hve s stro pumpi lemmt s possible. However, this is couterblced by the experiece tht stro pumpi lemmt my be hrd to prove, or, worse, hrd to use this experiece hs bee mde, for exmple, i the study of the output lues of tree trsducers, where other proof techiques, so-clled bride theorems, mke better tools (Eelfriet d Meth, 2002). The purpose of this squib is to strethe the stdrd pumpi lemm for the clss of reulr tree lues (Gécse d Steiby, 1997), without scrifici its usbility, i the sme wy s Ode stretheed the pumpi lemm for cotext-free stri lues (Ode, 1968). The pper is structured s follows. Sectio 2 itroduces our ottio. Sectio 3 presets the mi lemm d motivtes it usi smll, forml exmple. Filly, Sectio 4 cotis the proof of the mi lemm. 2 Prelimiries We ssume the reder to be fmilir with the stdrd cocepts from the theory of tree lues. The ottio tht we use i this pper is mostly I wish to thk Mthis Möhl d oymous reviewer for poiti out errors, d for commets tht helped to improve the qulity of the presettio. The work reported i this pper ws prtilly fuded by the Germ Reserch Foudtio. 1
ideticl to the oe used i the survey by Gécse d Steiby (1997); the mjor differece is our wy of deoti substitutio ito cotexts. We write N for the set of o-etive turl umbers, d [] s bbrevitio for the set { i N 1 i }. Give set A, we write A for the crdility of A, d A for the set of ll stris over A. Let Σ be rked lphbet. For tree t T Σ, we write t to deote the size of t, defied s the umber of odes of t. A pth i t is sequece of odes of t i which ech ode but the first oe is child of the ode precedi it. Let be symbol with rk zero tht does ot occur i Σ. Recll tht cotext over Σ is tree c over Σ { } i which occurs exctly oce. We cll the (lef) ode t which the symbol occurs the hole of the cotext. We write c to deote the size of the cotext c, defied s the umber of o-hole odes of c. Filly, ive cotext c d tree t, we write c t for the tree obtied by substituti t ito c t its hole. Note tht Gécse d Steiby deote this tree by t c or c(t). A subset L T Σ is tree lue over Σ. A tree lue is reulr, if there is fiite-stte tree utomto tht ccepts L. 3 Motivtio To motivte the eed for stro pumpi lemm for reulr tree lues, we strt with look t the stdrd oe (Gécse d Steiby, 1997) 1 : Lemm 1 For every reulr tree lue L T Σ, there is umber p 1 such tht y tree t L of size t lest p c be writte s t = c c t i such wy tht c 1, c t p, d c c t L, for every N. Just s the pumpi lemm for cotext-free stri lues, Lemm 1 is most ofte used i its cotrpositive formultio, which specifies strtey for proofs tht lue L T Σ is ot reulr: show tht, for ll p 1, there exists tree t L of size t lest p such tht for y decompositio c c t of t i which c 1 d c t p, there is umber N such tht c c t / L. It is helpful to thik of proof ccordi to this strtey s me ist imied dversry, where our objective is to prove tht L is o-reulr, d dversry s objective is to foil this proof. The me cosists of four lterti turs: I the first tur, dversry must choose umber p 1. I the secod tur, we must respod to this choice 1 The lemm ive here is i fct slihtly stroer th the oe ive by Gécse d Steiby (1997) (Propositio 5.2), d mkes pumpbility depedet o the size of tree, rther th o its heiht. 2
f f h h m 1 m 2 h h () L 1 (b) L 2 Fiure 1: Two tree lues tht re ot reulr by providi tree t L of size t lest p. I the third tur, dversry must choose decompositio of t ito frmets c c t such tht c 1 d c t p. I the fourth d fil tur, we must provide umber N such tht c c t / L. If we re ble to do so, we wi the me; otherwise, dversry wis. We c prove tht L is o-reulr, if we hve wii strtey for the me. Cosider the lue L 1 = { f(, ) 1 }, show schemticlly i Fiure 1. Usi Lemm 1, it is esy to show tht this lue is o-reulr: we lwys wi by preseti dversry with the tree t = f( p, p ). To see this, otice tht i whtever wy dversry decomposes t ito frmets c c t such tht c 1, the pumped tree c c 2 t does ot belo to L 1. I prticulr, if c is rooted t ode tht is lbelled with, the the pumped tree violtes the costrit tht the two brches hve the sme leth. Ufortutely, Lemm 1 sometimes is too blut tool to show the oreulrity of tree lue. Cosider the lue L 2 = { f( h m1, h m2 ), m 1, m 2 1 } (see Fiure 1b). It is ot uresoble to believe tht L 2, like L 1, is oreulr, but it is impossible to prove this usi Lemm 1. To see this, otice tht dversry hs wii strtey for p 2: for every tree t L 2 tht we c provide i the secod tur of the me, dversry c choose y decompositio c c t i which c = h( ) d t =. I 3
this cse, c 1, c t p, d both deleti d pumpi c yield oly vlid trees i L 2. Ituitively, we would like to force dversry to choose decompositio tht cotis -lbelled ode, thus trsferri our wii strtey for L 1 but this is ot wrrted by Lemm 1, which merely sserts tht pumpble cotext does exist somewhere i the tree, but does ot llow us to delimit the exct reio. The pumpi lemm tht we prove i this pper mkes stroer ssertio: Lemm 2 For every reulr tree lue L T Σ, there is umber p 1 such tht every tree t L i which t lest p odes re mrked s distiuished c be writte s t = c c t such tht t lest oe ode i c is mrked, t most p odes i c t re mrked, d c c t L, for ll N. Note tht, i the specil cse where ll odes re mrked, Lemm 2 reduces to Lemm 1. Lemm 2 c be see s the turl correspodet of Ode s Lemm for cotext-free stri lues (Ode, 1968). Its cotrpositive correspods to the followi modified me for tree lues L: I the first tur, dversry hs to choose umber p 1. I the secod tur, we hve to choose tree t L d mrk t lest p odes i t. I the third tur, dversry hs to choose decompositio c c t of t i such wy tht t lest oe ode i c d t most p odes i c t re mrked. I the fourth d fil tur, we hve to choose umber N such tht c c t / L. I this modified me, we c implemet our ide from bove to prove tht the lue L 2 is o-reulr: we c lwys wi the me by preseti dversry with the tree t = f( p h(), p h()) d mrki ll odes tht re lbelled with s distiuished. The, i whtever wy dversry decomposes t ito semets c c t, the cotext c cotis t lest oe ode lbelled with, d the tree c c 2 t does ot belo to L 2. 4 Proof Our proof of Lemm 2 builds o the followi techicl lemm: Lemm 3 Let Σ be rked lphbet. For every tree lue L T Σ d every k 1, there exists umber p 1 such tht every tree t L i which t lest p odes hve bee mrked s distiuished c be writte s t = c c 1 c k t i such wy tht for ech i [k], the cotext c i cotis t lest oe mrked ode, d the tree c 1 c k t cotis t most p mrked odes. 4
Proof Let m be the mximl rk of y symbol i Σ. Note tht if m is zero, the ech tree over Σ hs size oe, d the lemm trivilly holds with p = 2. For the remider of the proof, ssume tht m 1. Put Σ () = i=0 mi, d ote tht Σ () < Σ ( + 1), for ll N. We will show tht we c choose p = Σ (k). Let t L be tree i which t lest oe ode hs bee mrked s distiuished. We cll ode u of t iteresti, if it either is mrked, or hs t lest two childre from which there is pth to iteresti ode. It is esy to see from this defiitio tht from every iteresti ode, there is pth to mrked ode. Let d(u) deote the umber of iteresti odes o the pth from the root ode of t to u, excludi u itself. We mke two observtios bout the fuctio d(u): First, there is exctly oe iteresti ode u with d(u) = 0. To see tht there is t most oe such ode, let u 1 d u 2 be distict iteresti odes with d(u 1 ) = d(u 2 ) = ; the the lest commo cestor u of u 1 d u 2 is iteresti ode with d(u) = 1. To see tht there is t lest oe such ode, recll tht every mrked ode is iteresti. For the secod observtio, let u be iteresti ode with d(u) =. The umber of iteresti descedts v of u with d(v) = +1 is t most m. To see this, otice tht ech pth from u to v strts with u, cotiues with some child u of u, d the visits oly o-iteresti odes w util rechi v. From ech of these o-iteresti odes w, there is t most oe pth tht leds to v. Therefore, the pth from u to v is uiquely determied except for the choice of the child u, which is choice mo t most m ltertives. Tke toether, these observtios imply tht the umber of iteresti odes u with d(u) k 1 is bouded by the vlue Σ (k 1). Now, let t be tree i which t lest Σ (k) odes hve bee mrked s distiuished. The there is t lest oe iteresti ode u with d(u) = k, d hece, t lest oe pth tht visits t lest k + 1 iteresti odes. Choose y pth tht visits the mximl umber of iteresti odes, d let u be suffix of tht pth tht visits exctly k + 1 iteresti odes, cll them v 1,..., v k+1. We use u to idetify decompositio c 1 c k t of t s follows: for ech i [k], choose v i s the root ode of c i, choose v i+1 s the hole of c i, d choose v k+1 s the root ode of t. This decompositio stisfies the required properties: To see tht the tree c 1 c k t cotis t most p mrked odes, otice tht, by the choice of u, o pth i t tht strts t v 1 cotis more th k+1 iteresti odes, d hece the totl umber of iteresti odes i the subtree rooted t v 1 is bouded by Σ (k) = p. To see tht every cotext c i, i [k], cotis t lest oe mrked ode, 5
let v be oe of the iteresti odes i c i, d ssume tht v is ot itself mrked. The v hs t lest two childre from which there is pth to iteresti, d, ultimtively, to mrked ode. At most oe of these pths visits v i+1 ; the mrked ode t the ed of the other pth is ode of c i. With Lemm 3 t hd, the proof of Lemm 2 is strihtforwrd, d essetilly ideticl to the proof ive for the stdrd pumpi lemm (Gécse d Steiby, 1997): Proof (of Lemm 2) Let L T Σ be reulr tree lue, d let M be tree utomto with stte set Q tht recoizes L. We will pply Lemm 3 with k = Q. Let t L be tree i which t lest p odes re mrked s distiuished, where p is the umber from Lemm 3. The t c be writte s c c 1 c k t such tht for ech idex i [k], the cotext c i cotis t lest oe mrked ode, d the tree c 1 c k t cotis t most p mrked odes. Note tht ech cotext c i, i [k], is ecessrily o-empty. Sice M hs oly k sttes, it must rrive i the sme stte t the root odes of t lest two cotexts c i, i [k], or t the root ode of some cotext c i, i [k], d the root ode of t. A decompositio of t of the required kid is the obtied by cutti t t these two odes. Note tht by choosi k = m Q i this proof, where m 1, it is esy to eerlize Lemm 2 s follows: Lemm 4 For every reulr tree lue L T Σ d every m 1, there is umber p 1 such tht every tree t L i which t lest p odes re mrked s distiuished c be writte s t = c c 1 c m t such tht for ech i [m], t lest oe ode i c i is mrked, t most p odes i c 1 c m t re mrked, d c c 1 c m t L, for ll N.
