ON THE HOCHSCHILD (CO)HOMOLOGY OF QUANTUM EXTERIOR ALGEBRAS PETTER ANDREAS BERGH arxv: v1 [math.kt] 29 Aug 2007 Abstract. We compute the Hochschld cohomology and homology of the algebra Λ = k x,y /(x 2,xy +qyx,y 2 ) wth coeffcents n 1 Λ ψ for every degree preservng k-algebra automorphsm ψ: Λ Λ. As a result we obtan several nterestng examples of the homologcal behavor of Λ as a bmodule. Introducton Throughout ths paper, let k be a feld and q k a nonzero element whch s not a root of unty. Denote by Λ the k-algebra Λ = k x,y /(x 2,xy +qyx,y 2 ), and by Λ e ts envelopng algebra Λ op k Λ. All modules consdered are assumed to be rght modules. Durng the last years, ths 4-dmensonal graded Koszul algebra, whose module category was classfed n [7], has provded several examples (or rather counterexamples) gvng negatve answers to homologcal conjectures and questons. Among these are the conjecture of Auslander on local Ext-lmtatons (see [1, page 815], [6] and [8]) and the queston of Happel on the relaton between the global dmenson and the vanshng of the Hochschld cohomology (see [5] and [2]). We shall study the Hochschld cohomology and homology of Λ. More precsely, for every degree preservng k-algebra automorphsm ψ: Λ Λ we compute HH (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = Ext Λ e(λ, 1Λ ψ ) and HH (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = Tor Λe (Λ, 1Λ ψ ), that s, the Hochschld cohomology and homology of Λ wth coeffcents n the twsted bmodule 1 Λ ψ (the acton of Λ e on 1 Λ ψ s defned as λ(λ 1 λ 2 ) = λ 1 λψ(λ 2 )). As a result we obtan several nterestng examples, both n cohomology and homology, of the homologcal behavor of Λ as a bmodule. 1. The Hochschld Homology Denote by D the usual k-dual Hom k (,k), and consder the map φ: Λ Λ D(Λ Λ ) of left Λ-modules defned by φ(1)(α+βx+γy +δyx) def = δ. It s easy to show that ths s an njectve map and hence also an somorphsm snce dm k Λ = dm k D(Λ), and therefore Λ s a Frobenus algebra by defnton. Now take any element λ Λ, and consder the element φ(1) λ D(Λ) (we consder D(Λ) as a Λ-Λ-bmodule). As φ s surjectve, there s an element λ Λ such that λ φ(1) = φ(λ ) = φ(1) λ, and the map λ λ defnes a k-algebra automorphsm ν 1 : Λ Λ whose nverse ν s called the Nakayama automorphsm of Λ (wth respect to the map φ). Straghtforward calculatons show that x φ(1) = 2000 Mathematcs Subject Classfcaton. 16E05, 16E40, 16P10. 1
2 PETTER ANDREAS BERGH φ(1) ( q 1 x) and y φ(1) = φ(1) ( qy), hence snce x and y generate Λ over k we see that ν s the degree preservng map defned by x q 1 x, y qy. The map φ nduces a bmodule somorphsm 1 Λ ν 1 D(Λ), whch n turn gves an somorphsm (νψ) 1 Λ ν 1 (νψ) 1 D(Λ) 1 for any automorphsm ψ of Λ. Furthermore, snce (νψ) 1 Λ ν 1 s somorphc to 1 Λ ψ and (νψ) 1D(Λ) 1 = D( 1 Λ (νψ) 1), we get an somorphsm 1 Λ ψ D( 1 Λ (νψ) 1) of bmodules. Now from [3, Proposton VI.5.1] we get HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = Ext n Λ e(λ, 1Λ ψ ) Ext n ( Λ e Λ,D(1 Λ (νψ) 1) ) ) D (Tor Λe n (Λ, 1 Λ (νψ) 1) = D ( HH n (Λ, 1 Λ (νψ) 1) ), thus when computng the (dmenson of the) Hochschld cohomology group HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) we are also computng the Hochschld homology group HH n (Λ, 1 Λ (νψ) 1). Moreover, as ψ ranges over all degree preservng k-algebra automorphsms of Λ, so does (νψ) The Cohomology Complex We start by recallng the constructon of the mnmal bmodule projectve resoluton of Λ from [2]. Defne the elements f 0 0 = 1, f 1 0 = x, f 1 1 = y, f 1 n = 0 = fn n+1 for each n 0, and for each n 2 defne elements f n}n =0 Λ k k Λ nductvely by }} n copes f n = f n 1 1 y +q f n 1 x. Denote by P n the Λ e -projectve module n =0 Λ kf n kλ, and by f n the element 1 f n 1 P n (and f 0 0 = 1 1). The set f n}n =0 generates Pn as a Λ e -module. Now defne a map δ n : P n P n 1 by f n [ x f n 1 It s shown n [2] that +( 1) n q fn 1 x ] [ ] + q n y f n 1 1 +( 1)n fn 1 1 y. n+1 δn+1 (P,δ): P P n δ n P n 1 s a mnmal Λ e -projectveresoluton ofλ. Denote the drect sum of n copes of 1 Λ ψ by 1 Λ n ψ, and consder ts standard k-bass en 1,xe n 1,ye n 1,yxe n 1 } =0 n 1. Defne a map d n : 1 Λ n ψ 1Λ n+1 ψ by λe n 1 [ xλ+( 1) n q λψ(x) ] e n + [ q n 1 yλ+( 1) n λψ(y) ] e n +1. Applyng Hom Λ e(, 1 Λ ψ ) to the resoluton (P,δ), keepng n mnd that Hom Λ e(p n, 1 Λ ψ ) and 1 Λ n+1 ψ are somorphc as k-vector spaces, we get the commutatve dagram Hom Λ e(p n 1, 1 Λ ψ ) δ n Hom Λ e(p n, 1 Λ ψ ) δ n+1 1Λ n ψ d n 1Λ n+1 ψ d n+1
ON THE HOCHSCHILD (CO)HOMOLOGY OF QUANTUM EXTERIOR ALGEBRAS 3 of k-vector spaces. In order to compute HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = Ext n Λ e(λ, 1Λ ψ ) for n > 0 we compute the cohomology Kerd n+1 /Imd n of the bottom complex n the above commutatve dagram. We do ths by fndng dm k Imd n ; once we know dm k Imd n, we obtan dm k Kerd n (and therefore also dm k Kerd n+1 ) from the equaton We then have dm k Kerd n +dm k Imd n = dm k 1 Λ n ψ = 4n. dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = dm k Kerd n+1 dm k Imd n. Now let ψ be a degree preservng k-algebra automorphsm of Λ. Then there are elements α 1,α 2,β 1,β 2 k such that ψ(x) = α 1 x+α 2 y and ψ(y) = β 1 x+β 2 y. Snce ψ(x 2 ) = ψ(y 2 ) = ψ(xy +qyx) = 0, we have the relatons α 1 α 2 = β 1 β 2 = α 2 β 1 = 0. If α 2 0, then α 1 = β 1 = 0, mplyng x / Imψ. Smlarly, f β 1 0, then α 2 = β 2 = 0, mplyng y / Imψ. Therefore α 2 = β 1 = 0, and ths forces α 1 and β 2 to be nonzero. Thus the degree preservng k-algebra automorphsms of Λ are precsely those defned by x αx, y βy for two arbtrary nonzero elements α,β k. For such an automorphsm, the result of applyng d n to the bass vectors e n 1,xe n 1,ye n 1,yxe n 1 } =0 n 1 of 1Λ n ψ s e n 1 [ 1+( 1) n q α ] xe n + [ q n 1 +( 1) n β ] ye n +1 xe n 1 [ q n 1 +( 1) n+1 qβ ] yxe n +1 [ q +( 1) n q α ] yxe n yxe n 1 0 for 0 n 1. Note that the nequalty dm k Imd n 2n+1 always holds. ye n 1 3. The Hochschld Cohomology We start by computng HH 0 (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ). Rather than computng ths vector space drectly usng the dentfcatons HH 0 (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = z 1 Λ ψ λ z = z λ for all λ Λ} = z 1 Λ ψ λz = zψ(λ) for all λ Λ} = z 1 Λ ψ xz = zψ(x),yz = zψ(y),yxz = zψ(yx)} = z 1 Λ ψ xz = αzx,yz = βzy,yxz = αβzyx}, we use our cohomologycomplex and the somorphsmhh 0 (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) Kerd 1. From the above we see that the map d 1 s defned by and so calculaton gves e 0 0 [1 α]xe 1 0 +[1 β]ye 1 1 xe 0 0 [1+qβ]yxe 1 1 ye 0 0 [q +α]yxe 1 0 yxe 0 0 0, dm k HH 0 (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 3 when α = q,β = q 1 2 when α = 1,β = 1 2 when α = q,β q 1 2 when α q,β = q 1 1 otherwse whenthecharacterstcofk snot2. Inthecharacterstc2casewereplace q, q 1 and 1 n the above formula by ±q,±q 1 and ±1, respectvely.
4 PETTER ANDREAS BERGH Now we turn to the cohomology groups HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) for n > 0. To compute the dmenson of Imd n, we dstngush between four possble cases dependng on whether or not α and β belong to the set Σ = ±q } Z The case α,β Σ: Ths s the easest case; d n (e n 1 ),d n (xe n 1 ) and d n (ye n 1 ) are all nonzero for 0 n 1, hence dm k Imd n = 2n+1 for all n. Then dm k Kerd n = 2n 1, mplyng dm k Kerd n+1 = 2n+1 and therefore that HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 0 for n > 0. Remark. We can relate the vanshng of cohomology to the conjecture of Tachkawa statng that over a selfnjectve rng the only fntely generated modules havng no self extensons are the projectve ones. Namely, let M be a fntely generated Λ- module such that Λ has no bmodule extensons by Hom k (M,M). Then from [3, Corollary IX.4.4] we get Ext n Λ(M,M) HH n (Λ,Hom k (M,M)) = 0 for n > 0. Snce Tachkawa s conjecture holds for Λ (see [7, Proposton 4.2]), the module M must be projectve and therefore (Λ s local) somorphc to Λ t for some t N. Ths gves Hom k (M,M) (Λ k D(Λ)) t2 (Λ e ) t2. In partcular, f HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 0 for n > 0 then there cannot exst a Λ-module M such that Hom k (M,M) s somorphc to 1 Λ ψ, snce ths would mply the contradcton 1 Λ ψ (Λ e ) t The case α Σ,β Σ: Snce [ q n 1 +( 1) n β ] and [ q n 1 +( 1) n+1 qβ ] are nonzero, we have d n (e n 1 ) 0 and d n (xe n 1 ) 0 for 0 n 1. Therefore dm k Imd n 2n, and the problem s now whether or not the bass vector yxe n 0 belongs to Imd n. Ths s the case f and only f d n (ye0 n 1 ) 0, that s, f and only f (C1) q +( 1) n α 0 holds. We now break down ths case nto three cases. () The case α ±q: Snce (C1) holds we have dm k Imd n = 2n + 1, and so HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 0 for n > 0. () The case α = q: When the characterstc of k s not 2, the condton (C1) holds f and only f n s odd. Therefore 2n for n even dm k Imd n = 2n+1 for n odd, and so dm k Kerd n+1 = 2n+1 for n even 2n+2 for n odd. Ths gves dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 1 for n > 0. When k s of characterstc 2 we see that (C1) never holds, hence dm k Imd n = 2n. Then dm k Kerd n+1 = 2n+2, gvng dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 2 for n > 0.
ON THE HOCHSCHILD (CO)HOMOLOGY OF QUANTUM EXTERIOR ALGEBRAS 5 () The case α = q: As n the prevous case, we get dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 1 for n > 0 when k s not of characterstc 2, and dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 2 for n > 0 n the characterstc 2 case. Remark. From ths case we obtan an example showng that symmetry n the vanshng of Ext over Λ e does not hold. Namely, defne ψ by x q 1 x, y βy for some element β not contaned n Σ. For n > 0, case () above gves Ext n Λ e(λ, 1Λ ψ ) = 0, whereas from case () we see that dm k Ext n Λ e(λ, 1Λ ψ 1) s ether 1 or 2, dependng on the characterstc of k. Now t s easy to see that Ext n Λ e(λ, 1Λ ψ 1) s somorphc to Ext n Λ e( 1Λ ψ,λ) The case α Σ,β Σ: The algebra Λ s somorphc to the algebra k u,v /(u 2,uv +q 1 vu,v 2 ) va the map x v, y u, hence ths case s symmetrc to the case α Σ,β Σ treated above. Namely, when β ±q 1 the result s as n (), whereas when β = ±q 1 the result s as n () and () The case α Σ,β Σ: The bass vectors yxe n 0 and yxen n can only be the mage of yen 1 0 and xen 1 n 1, respectvely, whereas for 1 n 1 the bass vector yxe n can be the mage of both ye n 1 and xe n 1 1. Therefore we break ths case down nto four cases, each dependng on whether or not α = ±q and β = ±q 1. () The case α = ±q,β = ±q 1 : We have d n (e n 1 ) = [ 1±( 1) n q +1] xe n + [ q n 1 ±( 1) n q 1] ye n +1, and snce the term [ 1±( 1) n q +1] must be nonzero. Therefore d n (e n 1 ) 0. Applyng d n to xe n 1 and ye n 1 gves [ q n 1 ±( 1) n+1] yxe n +1 and [ q ±( 1) n q +1] yxe n, respectvely, hence when the characterstc of k s not 2 we get d n (xe n 1 ) = d n (ye n 1 ) = 0 for = n 1,β = q 1,n even 0 for = n 1,β = q 1,n odd 0 otherwse, 0 for = 0,α = q,n even 0 for = 0,α = q,n odd 0 otherwse. There are four possble pars (α,β) to consder. If α = q and β = q 1, then the above gves 2n 1 for n even dm k Imd n = 2n+1 for n odd, and therefore dm k Kerd n+1 = 2n+1 for n even 2n+3 for n odd. Ths mples dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 2 for n > 0. Smlar computaton gves dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 2 for n > 0 also for the other three possble pars.
6 PETTER ANDREAS BERGH When k s of characterstc 2 then d n (xe n 1 ) = d n (ye n 1 ) = 0 for = n 1 0 otherwse, 0 for = 0 0 otherwse, and so dm k Imd n = 2n 1 for all n > 0. Consequently dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 4 for n > 0. Remark. Note that, n ths partcular case, we have computed the (dmenson of the) Hochschld homology HH (Λ) = Tor Λe (Λ,Λ) of Λ. Namely, t follows from Secton 1 that for each n > 0 the k-vector spaces HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ν 1) and D(HH n (Λ)) are somorphc, where ν s the Nakayama automorphsm of Λ. Then ν 1 s defned by x q 1 x, y qy x qx, y q 1 y, hence 1 Λ ν 1 s precsely the sort of bmodule we have just consdered n terms of Hochschld cohomology. Consequently dm k HH n (Λ) = 2 for n > 0 when the characterstcof k s not 2, whereasdm k HH n (Λ) = 4 for n > 0 n the characterstc 2 case. () The case α = ±q,β ±q 1 : As n () the element d n (e n 1 ) s nonzero for 0 n 1. Moreover, snce β ±q 1 the bass element yxe n n always les n Imd n, as does the bass elements yxe n for 1 n 1. Therefore dmimd n 2n, and the queston s whether or not yxe n 0 belongs to Imd n,.e. whether or not d n (ye0 n 1 ) s nonzero. When the characterstc of k s not 2, then from () we see that d n (ye n 1 0 ) = 0 for α = q,n even 0 for α = q,n odd 0 otherwse, and computaton gves dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 1 for n > 0. However, when the characterstc of k s 2 then d n (ye0 n 1 ) = 0, gvng dm k Imd n = 2n and consequently dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 2 for n > 0. () The case α ±q,β = ±q 1 : Usng the somorphsm Λ k u,v /(u 2,uv+q 1 vu,v 2 ) from the case α Σ,β Σ, we see that the present case s symmetrc to the case () above. Thus when the characterstc of k s not 2 then dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 1 for n > 0, whereas dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 2 for n > 0 n the characterstc 2 case. (v) The case α ±q,β ±q 1 : We now have α = ±q s and β = ±q t where s Z\1} and t Z\ 1}, and therefore the bass elements yxe n 0 and yxe n n both le n the mage of d n. To compute the dmenson of Imd n, we must fnd out when d n (e n 1 ) = 0 for some 0 n 1 and when yxe n Imd n for some 1 n 1. We have dn (e n 1 ) = 0 for some 0 n 1 } ( ) 1+( 1) n q α = 0 and q n 1 +( 1) n β = 0 }
ON THE HOCHSCHILD (CO)HOMOLOGY OF QUANTUM EXTERIOR ALGEBRAS 7 and ( ) yxe n Imd n for some 1 n 1} q +( 1) n q α = 0 and q n +( 1) n+1 qβ = 0 }, and when the characterstc of k s not 2 ths happens precsely when we have the followng: (C2) s 0, t 0, α = ( 1) t s q s, β = ( 1) t s q t. In the characterstc 2 case we may relax ths condton; n ths case ( ) and ( ) occur precsely when we have the followng: (C3) s 0, t 0. However, both when the characterstc of k s not 2 and (C2) holds, and n the characterstc 2 case when (C3) holds, we see that ( ) occurs for n = t s + 1, whereas ( ) occurs for n = t s+2. Therefore, when the characterstc of k s not 2 the dmenson of Imd n s gven by 2n when (C2) holds and n = t s+1 dm k Imd n = 2n when (C2) holds and n = t s+2 2n + 1 otherwse, mplyng the dmenson of Kerd n+1 s gven by 2n+2 when (C2) holds and n = t s dm k Kerd n+1 = 2n+2 when (C2) holds and n = t s+1 2n+1 otherwse. Consequently, the dmenson of HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) for n > 0 s gven by 1 when (C2) holds and n = t s dm k HH n 2 when (C2) holds and n = t s+1 (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = 1 when (C2) holds and n = t s+2 0 otherwse. When the characterstcof k s 2, we obtan the exact same formulas, but wth (C2) replaced by (C3). Remark. () In the case consdered above, we see that the cohomology s zero except possbly n three degrees, dependng on what condtons s, t, α and β satsfy. As a consequence, we construct a counterexample to the followng conjecture by Auslander (see [1, page 815]): f M s a fntely generated module over an Artn algebra Γ, then there exsts a number n M such that for any fntely generated module N we have Ext Γ (M,N) = 0 for 0 Ext Γ (M,N) = 0 for n M. The frst counterexample to ths conjecture appeared n [6], where the algebra consdered was a fnte dmensonal commutatve Noetheran local Gorensten algebra. A counterexample over our algebra Λ = k x,y /(x 2,xy +qyx,y 2 ) was gven n [8]. As for a counterexample usng Hochschld cohomology, defne for each natural number t an automorphsm ψ: Λ Λ by x q t x and y q t y, and denote the bmodule 1 Λ ψ by M t. Then condton (C2)/(C3) s satsfed (wth s = t,α = q t and β = q t ), and so Ext n 0 for n = 2t+2 Λ e(λ,m t) = 0 for n > 2t+2.
8 PETTER ANDREAS BERGH () Even though the above conjecture of Auslander fals to hold n general, Auslander hmself proved (unpublshed, see [1, page 815]) that f the conjecture holds for the envelopng algebra Γ e of a fnte dmensonal algebra Γ over a feld, then the fntstc dmenson suppd Γ X X fntely generated Γ-module wth pd Γ X < } ofγsfnte. Invewoftheaboveremark,weseethattheconversetothsresultdoes not hold; our algebra Λ, beng selfnjectve, trvally has fnte fntstc dmenson, whereas the conjecture of Auslander does not hold for Λ e. () The computaton of the Hochschld cohomology HH (Λ) = Ext Λe(Λ,Λ) of Λ s covered by the last of the above cases. When ψ s the dentty automorphsm we have s = t = 0, and the condton (C2)/(C3) s satsfed. Ths gves 2 for n = 1 dm k HH n (Λ) = 1 for n = 2 0 for n 3, and so our algebraλ s a counterexampleto the followng queston rasedby Happel n [5]: f the Hochschld cohomology groups of a fnte dmensonal algebra vansh n hgh degrees, does the algebra have fnte global dmenson? The counterexample above frst appeared n [2], where t was shown that the generatng functon n=0 HHn (Λ)t n of HH n (Λ) s 2+2t+t 2. The converse to the queston of Happel s always true when the algebra modulo ts Jacobson radcal s separable over the ground feld. More specfcally, f Γ s a fnte dmensonal algebra over a feld K wth Jacobson radcal r, and the semsmple algebra Γ/r s separable over K, then by [4, 3] the mplcaton gl.dmγ < pd Γ e Γ < holds. In partcular the Hochschld cohomology groups HH n (Γ) = Ext n Γe(Γ,Γ) and the homology groups HH n (Γ) = Tor Γe n (Γ,Γ) of Γ vansh for n 0 when the global dmenson of Γ s fnte. It s not known whether the vanshng of the Hochschld homology groups n hgh degrees for a fnte dmensonal algebra mples the global dmenson of the algebra s fnte. (v) Because of the equalty dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ ψ ) = dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ (νψ) 1) whch follows from Secton 1, the somewhat strange behavor n Hochschld cohomology revealed n the last case consdered above can also be transferred to Hochschld homology. When the automorphsm ψ s gven by ψ(x) = ±q s x and ψ(y) = ±q t y, then the automorphsm θ def = (νψ) 1, where ν s the Nakayama automorphsm, s gven by x q 1 s x, y q (t+1) y. Thus for such an automorphsm θ, when s Z\1} and t Z\ 1} we get 1 when (C2)/(C3) holds and n = t s 2 when (C2)/(C3) holds and n = t s+1 dm k HH n (Λ, 1 Λ θ ) = 1 when (C2)/(C3) holds and n = t s+2 0 otherwse. when n > 0. In these formulas condton (C2) apples when the characterstc of k s not 2, and condton (C3) apples n the characterstc 2 case. Acknowledgement I would lke to thank my supervsor Øyvnd Solberg for valuable suggestons and comments.
