1 FUNCTIONAL EQUATION FO THETA SEIES JAE-HYUN YANG arxv: v5 [ath.nt] 6 Sep 008 Abstract. In ths short paper, we fnd the transforaton forula for the theta seres under the acton of the Jacob odular group on the Segel-Jacob space. Ths forula generalzes the forula (5.1 obtaned by Muford n [3, p.189]. For a gven fxed postve nteger g, we let 1. Introducton H g {Ω C (g,g Ω t Ω, IΩ > 0 } be the Segel upper half plane of degree g and let Γ g {γ Z (g,g t γj g γ J g } be the Segel odular group of degree g, where F (k,l denotes the set of all k l atrces wth entres n a coutatve rng F for two postve ntegers k and l, t M denotes the transpose atrx of a atrx M, I Ω denotes the agnary part of Ω and J g ( 0 Ig I g 0 For two postve ntegers g and, we consder the Hesenberg group H (g, Z : { (λ,µ;κ λ, µ Z (,g, κ Z (,, κ + µ t λ syetrc } endowed wth the followng ultplcaton law. (λ,µ;κ (λ,µ ;κ : (λ + λ,µ + µ ;κ + κ + λ t µ µ t λ. We let Γ g, : Γ g H (g, Z (se-drect proudct be the Jacob odular group endowed wth the followng ultplcaton law (γ,(λ,µ;κ (γ,(λ,µ ;κ ( γγ,( λ + λ, µ + µ ;κ + κ + λ t µ µ t λ wth γ,γ Γ g, λ,λ,µ,µ Z (,g, κ, κ Z (, and ( λ, µ (λ,µγ. Then Γ g, acts on the Segel-Jacob space H g, : H g C (,g properly dscontnuously by (1.1 (γ,(λ,µ;κ (Ω,Z ( (AΩ + B(CΩ + D 1,(Z + λω + µ(cω + D 1, ( where γ Γ C D g, λ,µ Z (,g, κ Z (, and (Ω,Z H g, (cf. [8], [9],[11], [1]. A fundaental doan for Γ g, \H g, was found by the author n [10]. Let Γ ϑ,g be the theta Subject Classfcaton: Prary 11F7, 11F37, 11F50 Keywords and phrases: theta seres, odular fors of half ntegral weght, Jacob fors. 1
2 JAE-HYUN YANG ( group consstng of all eleent γ Γ C D g such that the dagonal entres of atrces t AC and t BD are even ntegers. We set Γ ϑ,g, : Γ ϑ,g H (g, Z. We consder the theta seres (1. Θ(Ω,Z : Here σ(t denotes the trace of a square atrx T. A Z (,g e π σ(aω ta+a tz, (Ω,Z H g,. In [3, p.189], Muford consdered the case 1 and proved the followng functonal equaton (1.3 Θ ( (AΩ + B(CΩ + D 1,Z(CΩ + D 1 ζ(γe π{ Z(CΩ+D 1 C t Z } det(cω + D 1/ Θ(Ω,Z, ( where γ Γ C D ϑ,g and ζ(γ s an eghth root of 1. In ths short artcle, we consder the case of an arbtrary postve nteger and then prove the followng functonal equaton. ( Theore 1.1. For any γ (γ,(λ,µ;κ Γ ϑ,g, wth γ Γ C D ϑ,g, we obtan the followng functonal equaton (1.4 Θ ( (AΩ + B(CΩ + D 1,(Z + λω + µ(cω + D 1 ζ( γe π σ{(z+λω+µ(cω+d 1 C t (Z+λΩ+µ λω t λ λ t Z} det(cω + D Θ(Ω,Z, where ζ( γ s an eghth root of 1. We observe that the forula (1.4 generalzes the forula (1.3 wth 1 and λ µ 0. For a postve nteger N, we put {( a b Γ 0 (N SL(, Z } c 0(od N c d and θ(τ r In [, (Werke pp ], Hecke showed that e π rτ, τ H 1. (1.5 θ ( (aτ + b(cτ + d 1 ( c ǫ 1 d (cτ + d d 1/ θ(τ, ( a b Γ c d 0 (4, where ǫ d 1 or accordng to d 1 or 3 (od 4 and ( c d denotes the quadratc resdue sybol(cf. [6, p. 44]. Notatons: We denote by Z and C the rng of ntegers, and the feld of coplex nubers respectvely. C denotes the ultplcatve group of nonzero coplex nubers. The sybol : eans that the expresson on the rght s the defnton of that on the left. For two postve ntegers k and l, F (k,l denotes the set of all k l atrces wth entres n
3 FUNCTIONAL EQUATION FO THETA SEIES 3 a coutatve rng F. For a square atrx A F (k,k of degree k, σ(a denotes the trace of A. For any M F (k,l, t M denotes the transpose atrx of M. I n denotes the dentty atrx of degree n. We put 1. For z C, we defne z 1/ z so that π/ < arg(z 1/ π/. Further we put z κ/ ( z 1/ κ for every κ Z.. Proof of Theore 1.1 ( Let γ (γ,(λ,µ;κ be an eleent of Γ g, wth γ Γ C D g and (Ω,Z H g, wth Ω H g and Z C (,g. If we put (Ω,Z : γ (Ω,Z, then we have Ω γ Ω (AΩ + B(CΩ + D 1, Z (Z + λω + µ(cω + D 1. Frst of all we shall show that f the forula (1.4 holds for γ 1, γ Γ g,, then t hold for γ 1 γ. To prove ths fact, we consder the functon J : Γ g, H g, C defned by J ( γ,(ω,z : e π σ{ (Z+λΩ+µ(CΩ+D 1 C t (Z+λΩ+µ λω t λ λ t Z κ µ tλ}, ( where γ (γ,(λ,µ;κ Γ g, wth γ Γ C D g, λ,µ Z (,g, κ Z (, and (Ω,Z H g,. By a drect coputaton or a geoetrcal ethod (cf, [9, p.133], we can show that J s an autoorphc factor for Γ g, on H g,, that s, t satsfes the followng relaton J ( γ 1 γ,(ω,z J ( γ 1, γ (Ω,Z J ( γ,(ω,z for any γ 1, γ Γ g, and (Ω,Z H g,. It s easy to see that the ap J : Γ g, H g, C defned by J ( γ,(ω,z : J ( γ,(ω,z det(cω + D ( s an autoorphc factor for Γ g, on H g,, where γ (γ,(λ,µ;κ Γ g, wth γ Γ C D g and (Ω,Z H g,. It s easly seen that J ( γ,(ω,z can be wrtten as J ( γ,(ω,z e π σ(κ+µ t λ e π σ{(z+λω+µ(cω+d 1 C t (Z+λΩ+µ λω t λ λ t Z} det(cω+d. We observe that e π σ(κ+µ t λ ±1 because σ(κ + µ t λ s an nteger. Thus we see that f the forula (1.4 holds for γ 1, γ Γ g,, then t hold for γ 1 γ. We recall (cf. [1, p.36], [3, p.10] that Γ g s generated by the followng eleents ( Ig B t 0 (B : wth any B 0 I t B Z (g,g, g ( t α 0 g 0 (α : 0 α 1 wth any α GL(g, Z, ( 0 Ig J g :. I g 0

Therefore the followng eleents s(λ,µ;κ, t(b, g(α and σ g of Γ ϑ,g, defned by s(λ,µ;κ ( I g,(λ,µ;κ wth λ,µ Z (,g and κ Z (,, (( Ig B t(b,(0,0;0 wth any B 0 I t B Z (g,g even dagonals, g (( t α 0 g(α 0 α 1,(0,0;0 wth α GL(g, Z, (( 0 Ig σ g,(0,0;0 I g 0 generate the group Γ ϑ,g,. Case I. γ s(λ,µ;κ wth λ,µ Z (,g and κ Z (,. In ths case, we have Then we have Ω Ω and Z Z + λω + µ. Therefore ths proves the forula (1.4 n the case γ s(λ,µ;κ. Case II. γ t(b wth B t B Z (g,g even dagonal. In ths case, we have Ω Ω + B and Z Z.

Now we ay take ζ( γ 1. Therefore ths proves the forula (1.4 n the case γ t(b. (( t α 0 Case III. γ g(α 0 α 1,(0,0;0 wth α GL(g, Z. In ths case, we have Then we obtan Ω t αω α Θ( t αω α,zα and Z Zα. A Z (,g e π σ{a( tαω α ta + A t(z α} A Z (,g e π σ{(a tα Ω t(a tα + (A tαz } Θ(Ω,Z. We observe that the forula (1.4 reduces to the forula (.1 Θ ( t αω α,zα ζ( γ ( det α 1 / Θ(Ω,Z. If we take ζ( γ ( det α /, the forula (.1 concdes wth Θ(Ω,Z. Snce detα ±1, ζ( γ s a fourth root of 1. Therefore ths proves the forula (1.4 n the case γ g(α wth α GL(g, Z. (( 0 Ig Case IV. γ σ g,(0,0;0. I g 0 In ths case, we have Ω Ω 1 and Z ZΩ 1. We can prove the forula (1.4 usng the Posson Suaton Forula. Lea.1. For a fxed eleent (Ω,Z H g,, we obtan the followng ( ( e π σ(xω t x+x t Ω Z dx 11 dx g det e π σ(zω 1 tz, (,g where x (x j (,g.
6 6 JAE-HYUN YANG Proof. By a sple coputaton, we see that e π σ(xω t x+x t Z e π σ(zω 1 t Z e π σ{(x+zω 1 Ω t (x+zω 1 }. Snce the real Jacob group Sp(g, H (,g acts on H g, holoorphcally, we ay put Ω A t A, Z V, A (g,g, V (v j (,g. e π σ(xω t x+x tz dx 11 dx g (,g e π σ(zω 1 t Z e π σ[{x+v (A ta 1 }(A t A t {x+v (A ta 1 }] dx 11 dx g (,g e π σ(zω 1 t Z e π σ[{x+v (A ta 1 }A t A t {x+v (A ta 1 }] dx 11 dx g (,g e π σ(zω 1 t Z e π σ{(ua t (ua} ( du 11 du g Put u x + V (A t A 1 (u j (,g e π σ(zω 1 t Z e π σ(w tw (deta ( dw 11 dw g Put w ua (wj (,g g e π σ(zω 1 tz (det A e π w j dw j 1 j1 e π σ(zω 1 t Z (det A ( because e π σ(zω 1 t Z ( det ( A t A ( ( e π σ(zω 1 t Z Ω det. e π w j dw j 1 for all,j Ths copletes the proof of Lea.1. For an eleent (Ω,Z H g,, we defne the functon f Ω,Z on (,g by (. f Ω,Z (x : e π σ(xω t x+x t Z, x (x j (,g. By the Posson suaton forula, we obtan A Z (,g f Ω,Z (A A Z (,g fω,z (A, where f Ω,Z s the Fourer transfor of f Ω,Z gven by f Ω,Z (y f Ω,Z (xe π σ( txy dx 11 dx g. (,g Then we have

Therefore we obtan the forula (.3 Θ ( Ω 1,ZΩ 1 e π σ(zω 1 t Z ( ( Ω / det Θ(Ω,Z. The fact that ζ( γ 8 1 follows fro the forula (.3. Indeed we ay take ζ( γ Ig / det(. Therefore ths proves the forula (1.4 n the case γ σg. Fnally we coplete the proof of Theore 1.1. eark.1. Let be an odd postve nteger. Accordng to the forula (1.4, we see that Θ(Ω,0 s a odular for of half ntegral weght wth respect to Γ ϑ,g (cf.[3, p.00], [6]. We ay say that the theta seres Θ(Ω,Z s a Jacob for of half ntegral weght and ndex I wth respect to Γ ϑ,g (cf. [8],[9]. Ths eans that Θ(Ω,Z ay be regarded as an autoorphc for on a two-fold coverng of the Jacob group (cf. [5]. Indeed the theta seres Θ(Ω,Z s closely related to the Wel representaton of the Jacob group (cf. [7], [13]. The functon f Ω,Z s a covarant ap for the Wel-Schrödnger representaton (cf. [13]. eark.. Olav K. chter [4] obtaned the transforaton forula for theta functons that s ore general than the forula (1.4. It s y pleasure to thank h for lettng e know hs paper [4]. But our proof s qute dfferent fro hs. In fact, our forula (1.4 s a cobnaton of the transforaton laws ( and (3 n [4].
