General expressions in terms of the Fox H function M. Baes and E. Van Hese Sterrenkundig Oservatorium, Universiteit Gent, Krijgslaan 8 S9, B-9 Gent, Belgium maarten.aes@ugent.e April 8, 3 ABSTRACT The Sérsic model is the de facto standard to descrie the surface rightness distriution of hot stellar systems. An important inconvenience of this analytical model is that the corresponding luminosity density and associated properties cannot e expressed using elementary functions or even standard special functions. We present a set of compact and elegant analytical expressions for the luminosity density, cumulative luminosity and potential for the Sérsic model in terms of the Fox H function for general values of the Sérsic index. Furthermore, we present explicit series expansions of these quantities and discuss the asymptotic ehaviour. Our analysis completes the work of Mazure & Capelato ( and Baes & Gentile ( and demonstrates the power of the underestimated Fox H function as a tool for analytical work. Key words. methods: analytical galaxies: photometry. Introduction The Sérsic (968 surface rightness profile, has ecome the preferred model to descrie the surface rightness profile of earlytype galaxies and the ulges of spiral galaxies (e.g. Davies et al. 988; Caon et al. 993; D Onofrio et al. 994; Cellone et al. 994; Andredakis et al. 995; Prugniel & Simien 997; Möllenhoff & Heidt ; Graham & Guzmán 3; Allen et al. 6; Gadotti 9. Many analytical properties of this model have een discussed in the literature (e.g. Ciotti 99; Ciotti & Lanzoni 997; Ciotti & Bertin 999; Trujillo et al. ; Mazure & Capelato ; Cardone 4; Graham & Driver 5; Elíasdóttir & Möller 7; Baes & Gentile. An important inconvenience of the Sérsic model is that its deprojected luminosity density, i.e. the spatial 3D luminosity density ν(r that projects on the plane of the sky to the Sérsic surface rightness profile, cannot e expressed using elementary functions or even in terms of standard special functions. It was long thought that no analytical expression could e otained. Quite unexpectedly, Mazure & Capelato ( came up with an analytical expression for ν(r in terms of the Meijer G function for all integer Sérsic indices m. Baes & Gentile (, hereafter BG took this analysis one step further and showed that the deprojection of the Sérsic surface rightness profile for general values of m can e solved elegantly using Mellin integral transforms and gives rise to a Mellin- Barnes integral. The result is that the Sérsic luminosity density can e written compactly in terms of a Fox H function, which reduces to a Meijer G function for all rational values of m. BG also calculated analytically a numer of additional properties of the Sérsic model for rational m, including the asymptotic expansion of the luminosity density at small and large radii, the cumulative light profile and the gravitational potential. This was possile thanks to the many analytical properties of the Meijer G function. The goal of this paper is two-fold. Foremost, we extend and complete the analysis presented in Mazure & Capelato ( and BG: we will provide compact and elegant expressions for the density, potential and luminosity profiles in terms of the general Fox H function, which are valid for all values of the Sérsic index m rather than just for integer or rational m. We also present a completely general series expansion of these functions that enales oth a numerical evaluation and a straightforward analytical study of the asymptotic ehaviour. Besides providing these useful characteristics on one of the most used models in extragalactic astronomy, our work also has a secondary ojective, namely to demonstrate the power of the Fox H function for analytical work. The Fox H function is, to use an understatement, not the most mainstream special function: it is even not contained in the standard works on special functions such as Gradshteyn & Ryzhik (965 or the Wolfram Functions Site. We feel that this is not justified: it is in fact a very elegant and powerful tool for analytical work and it is ecoming more and more used in mathematics and applied sciences, including physics, iology, engineering and earth sciences. It is also gradually eing used in astrophysics, e.g. for solar and stellar structure models, fractional reaction-diffusion equations and stellar dynamics (Hauold et al. 7, ; Baes & van Hese 7; Van Hese et al. 9; De Rijcke et al.. With our analysis, we wish to illustrate its useful properties and advocate its use in theoretical astrophysical research. In Section we derive compact expressions for the luminosity density, cumulative luminosity and potential for the Sérsic model, and in Section 3 we deduce detailed power and logarithmic-power series expressions for these important quantities. We discuss the asymptotic ehaviour of our functions in Section 4, and we sum up our results in Section 5. In Appendix A we present the Fox H function and we discuss some of its properties that were used for our analysis.
M. Baes & E. Van Hese: Analytical expressions for the deprojected Sérsic model II. Analytical properties of the Sérsic model The Sérsic model is defined y the intensity profile projected on the plane of the sky, ( /m R I(R = I exp R. ( e The 3D, deprojected luminosity density ν(r of a spherically symmetric system can e recovered from the surface rightness profile I(R using the standard deprojection formula ν(r = π r di dr (R dr R r. ( Sustituting the Sérsic profile ( into ( we otain an integral that cannot readily e evaluated using the standard ways or look-up tales. BG applied a Mellin integral transform technique to convert this integral to a Mellin-Barnes contour integral, ν(r = I r π πi L Γ( x Γ ( + x Γ(x ( m x r dx, (3 or, given the definition (A. of the Fox H function, to the compact expression ν(r = I m u H, (, π, Re (,, (, u, (4 where we have used the reduced coordinate R e u = m r R e. (5 BG converted this general expression (or actually, a slightly different ut equivalent expression to expressions in terms of the Meijer G function for integer and rational values of the Sérsic index m. As a check on these formulae, they calculated the total luminosity of the Sérsic model for rational m y integrating the luminosity density over the entire space. To otain the results, they used the integration properties of the Meijer G function, comined with several applications of Gauss multiplication theorem. As a generalization of this result, and as a nice example of the power of the Fox H function, we calculate the total luminosity from the general formula (4, i.e. L = 4π ν(r r dr = 4m π I R e H,, (, (,, (, t dt. (6 To evaluate this integral, one should remind that equation (A. defined the Fox H function as an inverse Mellin transform of a comination of gamma functions. As a result, the Mellin transform of a Fox H function reads H m,n (a, A mj= (, B z Γ( z s j + B j s n j= Γ( a j A j s dz = q j=m+ Γ( j B j s p j=n+ Γ(a j + A j s. (7 Applying this to (6 with s =, we otain L = 4m π I R e Γ( Γ( 3 = π m I R e Γ(m, (8 Γ( in agreement with the value otained y integrating the surface rightness profile ( over the plane of the sky (Ciotti 99. From the luminosity density, a numer of other important quantities can e derived, most importantly the cumulative luminosity profile L(r and the gravitational potential Ψ(r, L(r = 4π Ψ(r = G Υ r r ρ(r r dr. (9 L(r dr r, ( where the Υ is the mass-to-light ratio. Mazure & Capelato ( and BG calculated these quantities for the Sérsic model for integer and rational values of the Sérsic parameter, respectively, using the integration properties of the Meijer G function. It is,
M. Baes & E. Van Hese: Analytical expressions for the deprojected Sérsic model II 3 however, possile to calculate these properties for general m in an elegant way y directly applying the integrations on the Mellin- Barnes integral form of the luminosity density. For the cumulative luminosity profile we find L(r = 8m r Γ( x Γ ( π I + x ( m r x dx πi L Γ(x R e r dr = 8m Γ( x Γ ( π I + x ( m x r r x dr dx πi L Γ(x R e = 4m π I r Γ( x Γ ( + x Γ( x u x dx πi L Γ(x Γ( x = 4m π I R e u H, (,, (,,3 (,, (,, (, u. ( For the gravitational potential we find after a similar calculation Ψ(r = π G Υ I R e m u H,,3 (,, (, (,, (,, (, u. ( The formulae (4, ( and ( form a triplet of formulae that descrie three important spatial properties of the Sérsic model in a compact way. A straightforward way of checking these formulae is to look at the model that corresponds to m =. In this case, all components of the vectors A and B are equal to one, such that the Fox H function reduces to a Meijer G function. We find ν(r = I ( u G, π, Re, u = I e u, (3 π Re L(r = π I R ( e u G,,,3,, u = π I R e erf u π u e u, (4 ( π G Υ I R e Ψ(r = u G,,,3,, u = π G Υ I R e erf u u. (5 These expressions can also e derived y sustituting the intensity profile I(R = I e R /R e in the expressions (, (9 and ( and directly evaluating the resulting integrals. More generally, one can check that the formulae (4, ( and ( reduce to the equations (, (4 and (44 of BG for rational values of m. 3. Explicit series expansions While the expressions (4, ( and ( form an triplet of compact formulae that are useful for analytical work, they are not readily useful to numerically evaluate the spatial properties of the Sérsic model. For rational values of m, the Fox H functions reduce to Meijer G functions, and some numerical software packages have this function now implemented. However, the numerical evaluation of Meijer G functions with large parameter vectors (which easily occurs in our case for rational values of m, as can e seen in BG, proves to e difficult, in particular in cases where second-order poles are present in the integrand of the inverse Mellin transform. Moreover, for general values of m, the expressions (4, ( and ( cannot e written in terms of the Meijer G function or any other special function, and we are not aware of any implementations in numerical software that can evaluate general Fox H functions. In this section, we derive explicit series expansions for ν(r, L(r and Ψ(r, which oth enales the numerical calculation and again highlights the power of Fox H function as a useful mathematical tool. The expansions uild on the general series expansion of the Fox H function as power or power-logarithmic series (details can e found in Appendix A. The form of the series expansion depends on the multiplicity of the poles of the gamma functions Γ( j + B j s. For ν(r and L(r, the poles of these gamma functions are found at k / and / k with k and k any natural numer. The gamma functions corresponding to the expression of the potential Ψ(r contain the same poles with an additional pole at /. The good news is that each pole can at most occur twice, the ad news is that this happens quite often: for all integer m and rational m = p/q where the denominator q of the fraction is odd, doule poles do occur. In the case of simple poles of the gamma functions Γ( j + B j s, the expansion of the Fox H function is a power series, given y equation (A.6. Applied to our case, we find in case m is non-rational or rational with an even denominator, the expansions ν(r = I m π Re L(r = 4m π I R e Ψ(r = π G Υ I R e m Γ ( k k= Γ ( ( k k Γ ( k k= Γ ( ( k k Γ ( k k= Γ ( ( k k u k/m u k/m+ k Γ( m k Γ ( ( k k u k, (6 Γ( m k Γ ( ( k u k+3 k k + 3, (7 Γ(m k Γ ( ( k u k k k +. (8 u k/m+ k + +
4 M. Baes & E. Van Hese: Analytical expressions for the deprojected Sérsic model II Notice that the term k = in the first sums is omitted, since the factors Γ( in the denominator make those terms vanish. In fact, if m is a rational numer p/q with q even, then the terms in the first sums for which k =, p, p,... vanish; if p =, these first sums vanish completely. A particularly interesting case is (again m =, where we find ν(r = I ( k u k = I e u, (9 π Re π Re L(r = 4 π I R e Ψ(r = π G Υ I R e ( k u 3+k k + 3 = π I R e ( k erf u π u e u, ( u k k + = π G Υ I R e erf u u, ( in agreement with formulae (3, (4 and (5. When the gamma functions Γ( j +B j s have multiple poles, the expansion of the Fox H function is a logarithmic-power series, the complexity of which increases with increasing multiplicity of the poles. The full expression for the case where two gamma functions share poles is given in equation (A.. For our present case, this means that we otain logarithmic-power series expansions for ν(r, L(r and Ψ(r if the Sérsic index m is integer or rational with an odd denominator. If we define k = (q + /, one otains after quite some algera ν(r = I m π Re L(r = 4m π I R e u3 π k= k mod p (k+k mod q= Ψ(r = π G Υ I R e m + u π (k+k mod q= Γ ( k Γ ( k π (k+k mod q= k= k mod p Γ ( ( k ( p k Γ ( k u k/m + (k+k mod q Γ( m k Γ ( ( k k (k +! ( u k ( u ln + ψ(k + + m ψ(km + m ψ(k + (km + m! ( k ( p (k +! km + 3m (km + m! k= k mod p u k/m+ k + + Γ ( k Γ ( ( k k ( p (k +! km + 3m (km + m! (k +! (k+k mod q ( u k ( u ln + u k/m+ k + ( u k ( u ln + u k Γ( m k Γ ( ( k k u k+3 k ψ(k + + m ψ(km + m ψ(k + k + 3 (k+k mod q Γ( m k Γ ( ( k u k+ k (k +! k Γ(m π, (, (3 k ψ(k + + m ψ(km + m ψ(k + k + 3 In these expressions, ψ(s = Γ (s/γ(s is the digamma function. In Ψ(r, the third term Γ(m/ π corresponds with the residue of the pole. Again, the terms in the first sums for which k =, p, p,... vanish, and these first sums vanish completely if p =. On the other hand, if q =, i.e. if m is an integer value, the second sums vanish, since then the integrands for ν(r and L(r have no simple poles β,k, while for Ψ(r only the pole remains as a single pole. On the crossroad of these two cases we have m = : for this model, oth the first and second sums in the expansions (-(4 vanish completely, apart from a single term for the potential. Astrophysically, the Sérsic model with m = corresponds to a model with an exponential surface rightness profile, often used for the description of low-luminosity elliptical galaxies and pseudo-ulges. BG calculated the luminosity density of the exponential model y directly deprojecting the surface rightness profile and through its representation as a Meijer G function. For the luminosity density we get ν(r = I. (4 ( u k ( u ln + ψ(k + = I K (u, (5
M. Baes & E. Van Hese: Analytical expressions for the deprojected Sérsic model II 5 with K ν (z the modified Bessel function of the second kind. This expression is in agreement with equation (4 of BG. Similarly, we otain for the cumulative luminosity L(r = 4 I R e 8 ( u k+3 ( u ln + (k + 3 = π I R e + ψ(k + k + 3 u K (u L (u + K (u L (u 4 3π u K (u, (6 with L ν (u the modified Struve function. Finally, for the potential of the exponential model we get the expansion Ψ(r = 4 G Υ I R e ( u k+ ( u ln + (k + 3 (k +! = π G Υ I R e k k + + ψ(k + K (u L (u + K (u L (u + 3π u K (u These last two expressions can also e otained y sustituting the luminosity density (5 into the recipes (9 and (.. (7 4. Asymptotic ehaviour With all the explicit power series of Section 3 availale, it is fairly straightforward to examine the asymptotic ehaviour of the spatial function of the Sérsic model at small radii, generalizing the results of Ciotti (99 and BG. The density has the following rich ehaviour, depending on the value of m: ν(r I m ν(r I /3 ν(r I m Γ( m + Γ( 3m u ( Γ ( ( u 3 ln + γ u Γ( m + π ν(r I ( u ln γ Γ ( Γ ( for < m < 3 or m =, for m = 3, (8a (8 u /m for 3 < m < and m, (8c for m =, ν(r I m Γ ( π Re Γ ( u /m for m >. (8e with γ the Euler-Mascheroni constant. The luminosity ehaves as L(r 4 I R e 3 Γ( m u3 for m <, (9a L(r 4 I R e 3 L(r I R e π + (8d ( u ln γ + u 3 for m =, (9 3 Γ ( Γ ( u /m+ for m >. (9c
6 M. Baes & E. Van Hese: Analytical expressions for the deprojected Sérsic model II Finally, the potential approaches r as Ψ(r G Υ I R e 4 m Γ( + m 3 Γ( m u for m <, (3a Ψ(r G Υ I R e Ψ(r G Υ I R e m 4 + ( ( u ln + γ 3 5 u 6 4 Γ( + m + π + If we set r = in the expressions (3, we recover the central potential for every real value m >, in agreement with equation ( of Ciotti (99. for m =, (3 Γ ( Γ ( u /m+ for m >. (3c Ψ = 4 G Υ I R e m Γ(m +, (3 5. Conclusions This paper is a companion paper to BG that deals with the derivation of analytical expressions for the luminosity density ν(r, cumulative luminosity L(r and gravitational potential Ψ(r of the Sérsic model. Our work extends the work initiated y Mazure & Capelato (, who managed to express these properties in terms of the Meijer G function for integer values of the Sérsic index m. In BG we extended this analysis y demonstrating that these expressions can e derived using a Mellin integral transform and that they are also valid for half-integer values of m. We also derived more general expressions in terms of the Meijer G function for these spatial properties for Sérsic models with rational m. Actually, the Mellin integral transform approach directly led to an expression in terms of the Fox H function for the luminosity density valid for general values of m. Not fully aware of the rich power of the Fox H function and attracted y the availaility of implementations of the Meijer G function oth in symolic computer algera packages and as high-performance computing code, we focused our attention in BG on the study of the Sérsic model with integer and rational m. In this paper, we have extended this analysis to aritrary values of m, now fully making use of the Fox H function. We have derived compact and elegant expressions for the luminosity density, cumulative luminosity and gravitational potential that are valid for all values of m. We have used the properties of the Fox H function to deduce explicit power and logarithmic-power expansions for ν, L and Ψ that can e used to evaluate these important spatial properties for aritrary values of m. These series expansions also provide a direct way to proe the rich asymptotic ehaviour of the Sérsic model at small radii; our results are in full agreement with the more ad hoc analysis of BG. Our work fits into a significant effort of analytical work on the Sérsic model: apart from the spatial properties discussed here, also its photometric (Graham & Driver 5, dynamic (Ciotti 99; Ciotti & Lanzoni 997 and lensing (Cardone 4; Elíasdóttir & Möller 7 properties have studied extensively through analytical means. Given that the Sérsic model is the de facto standard model to descrie the surface rightness distriution of hot stellar systems, this comined range of analytical properties has plenty of applications. For example, they can e used for the construction of self-consisting dynamical models for elliptical galaxies, serve as a realistic starting point for numerical N-ody or smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations, or serve as a template for radiative transfer or gravitational lens modelling. We are convinced that the exact analytical results for the spatial properties of the Sérsic models will e a useful contriution in this respect. Besides this practical use, we hope to have demonstrated the power of the Fox H as a tool for analytical work. We are aware that the Fox H function is not the most every day s special function and that its unfamiliar definition through inverse Mellin transform alone might already seem daunting. However, the Fox H function is gradually appearing more in mathematics and applied sciences and there are now several volumes of comprehensive literature availale on its properties (e.g. Mathai & Saxena 978; Srivastava et al. 98; Kilas & Saigo 4; Mathai et al. 9. Through this work, we advocate the use of the Fox H function in theoretical astrophysics. References Allen, P. D., Driver, S. P., Graham, A. (A. It was introduced y Fox (96 in his attempt to find the most general symmetric Fourier kernel. The Fox H function is a generalization of the Meijer G function, ut includes also many other special functions, including Mittag-Leffler functions and generalized Bessel functions. For details on the definition, convergence and many useful properties of the Fox H function, we refer to Mathai & Saxena (978, Srivastava et al. (98, Kilas & Saigo (4 or Mathai et al. (9, and the references therein. We will now derive a series expansion of the Fox H function. Let us write the Fox H function in the form with H m,n (a, A (, B z = πi L ϕ(s z s ds, mj= Γ( j + B j s n j= Γ( a j A j s ϕ(s = q j=m+ Γ( j B j s p j=n+ Γ(a j + A j s. Under certain conditions (which are always satisfied for the Fox H functions we consider in this paper; see e.g. Kilas & Saigo (999 or Mathai et al. (9 for details, the Fox H function is an analytical function, and the contour integral can e evaluated using the residue theorem. If we introduce for the poles of the functions Γ( i + B i s the short-hand notation β i,k = ( i + k/b i, then H m,n (a, A m (, B z = Res ϕ(s z s. (A.4 s=β i,k i= If β i,k is a simple pole, then the corresponding residue is fairly straightforward: we find Res ϕ(s z s = lim (s β i,k ϕ(s z s = ϕ i (β i,k ( k s=β i,k s β i,k (A. (A.3 z β i,k B i, (A.5 where ϕ i (s is ϕ(s/γ( i + B i s. As a result, if all gamma functions Γ( i + B i s have only single poles, we get as a series expansion, H m,n (a, A m (, B z ( k mj=, j i Γ ( j B i +k nj= j B = i Γ ( a j + A i +k B q i= i j=m+ Γ ( j + B i +k p j=n+ Γ ( z (i+k/bi, (A.6 a j A i +k in agreement with equation (3. in Kilas & Saigo (999. However, if several gamma functions share the same pole, then this pole is of second order, and the calculation ecomes more cumersome. Kilas & Saigo (999 demonstrate that the Fox H function can then e expressed as a logarithmic-power series rather than a simple power series. They present a generic expression valid for all orders of pole multiplicity. Here, we present a less general, ut more explicit, series expansion in the case that two gamma functions Γ( j + B j s share at least one pole. Without loss of generality, we can place these two gamma functions at the front, so that we can write ϕ(s = Γ( + B s Γ( + B s φ(s, (A.7 with mj=3 Γ( j + B j s n j= Γ( a j A j s φ(s = q j=m+ Γ( j B j s p j=n+ Γ(a j + A j s. (A.8
8 M. Baes & E. Van Hese: Analytical expressions for the deprojected Sérsic model II Now, suppose there is a tuple (k, k of indices so that β,k = β,k. The residue of this second-order pole is then, after some algera, { Res ϕ(s z s } { d = lim (s β,k ϕ(s z s} s=β,k s β,k ds = φ(β,k ln z + B ψ(k + + B ψ(k + + φ (β,k ( k ( k z β,k, (A.9 φ(β,k (k! (k! B B with ψ(s = Γ (s/γ(s the digamma function. Moreover, note that φ(s is a product and quotient of gamma functions, so that φ (s/φ(s can also e expressed as a sum of digamma functions. This means that all the machinery is availale to express the Fox H function as the rather daunting-looking series expansion H m,n (a, A (, B z = + i,k with the constants C k defined as k ( k B i mj=, j i Γ ( j B i +k nj= Γ ( a j + A i +k j q j=m+ Γ ( j + B i +k p j=n+ Γ ( z (i+k/bi a j A i +k mj=3 Γ ( j B i +k nj= Γ ( a j + A i +k q j=m+ Γ ( j + B i +k p j=n+ Γ ( z ( (i+k/bi C a j A i +k k ln z, (A.a ( k+k k! k! The prime in the first summation in (A.a indicates that this sum covers only the single poles, and the doule prime in the second summation indicates that this summation runs over the second-order poles. In the latter summation, we set k = B ( + k /B.
