We prove some asymptotic results concerning global weak) solutions of compressible isentropic Navier Stokes equations. More precisely, we establish the convergence towards solutions of incompressible Euler equations, as the density becomes constant, the Mach number goes to and the Reynolds number goes to infinity. Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS. Introduction From a physical point of view, one can formally derive incompressible models from compressible ones, when the Mach number goes to zero and the density becomes almost constant. In Lions and the author [], this problem is investigated starting form the global solutions of the compressible Navier Stokes equations constructed by Lions []. We have shown the convergence towards the incompressible Navier Stokes equations as well as the convergence towards the incompressible Euler equations if the viscosity coefficients go to zero and if the initial data are well prepared ). These results have been precised and extended in different works see [3,,,4]). In this paper, we extend the result shown in [] concerning the convergence to the Euler system to the case of more general initial data. In fact if the viscosity goes to zero too, we loose spatial compactness properties. In order to circumvent this difficulty, we use energy arguments. Hence, we have to describe precisely) the oscillations that take place and include them in the energy estimates. Ideas of this type were introduced by address: masmoudi@cims.nyu.edu N. Masmoudi). 2 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) 99 4 Schochet [7], see also [4]) and extended to the case of vanishing viscosity coefficients in [6]. Let us now precise the scalings, we are going to use, which are the same as those used in []. The unknowns ρ,v) are respectively the density and the velocity of the fluid gaz). We scale ρ and v and thus p) in the following way ρ = ρx,εt), v = εux,εt), ) and we assume that the viscosity coefficients µ, ξ ξ µ, µ are called the volumic and dynamical viscosity coefficients) are also small and scale like µ = εµ ε, ξ = εξ ε, ) where ε, ) is a small parameter and the normalized coefficient µ ε,ξ ε satisfy µ ε >, ξ ε + µ ε >. Moreover, we assume that µ ε as ε goes to +. 3) With the preceding scalings, the compressible Navier Stokes system reads ρ + divρu) =, ρ, t ρu + divρu u) µ ε u ξ ε div u + a t ε ργ =. 4) One can always assume that a = /γ by replacing ε by aγε. All throughout this paper the domain will be the the whole space R N or the torus T N in this last case, all the functions are defined on R N and assumed to be periodic with period πa i in the ith variable). We recall here that the inviscid limit, namely the convergence of the Navier Stokes equations to Euler equations in the case of a domain with boundary is an open problem even in the incompressible case, which seems to be easier see [5] for a partial result)... Statement of the results... The whole space case Let us begin with the case of the whole space. We consider a sequence of global weak solutions ρ ε,u ε ) of the compressible Navier Stokes equations 4) and we assume that ρ ε L, ; L γ ) C[, ), Lp ) for all p<γ,where Lp ={f L loc, f f L p, f f L }, u ε L,T; H ) for all T, ) with a norm which can explode when ε goes to ), ρ ε u ε L, ; L ) and ρ ε u ε C[, ); L γ/γ+) w) i.e. is continuous with respect to t with values in L γ/γ+) endowed with its weak topology. We require 4) to hold in the sense of distributions and we impose the following conditions at infinity ρ ε as x +, u ε as x +. 5)
3 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) 99 4 Finally, we prescribe initial conditions ρ ε t= = ρ ε, ρ εu ε t= = m ε, 6) where ρε, ρ ε Lγ, m ε Lγ/γ+), m ε = a.e.on{ρ ε = } and ρ ε u ε L, denoting by u ε = m ε /ρ ε on {ρ ε > }, u ε = on{ρ ε = }. The initial conditions also satisfy the following uniform bounds ρε u ε + ρ )γ ε ε γ ρ ε ) C, 7) where, here and below, C denotes various positive constants independent of ε. Letus notice that 7) implies in particular that, roughly speaking, ρε is of order + Oε). In the sequel, we will use the following notation ρ ε = + εϕ ε. Notice that if γ<, we cannot deduce any bound for ϕ ε in L,T; L ). This is why we prefer to work with the following approximation Φ ε = ε a ρ γ ε γ γρ ε ) ). Furthermore, we assume that ρε u ε converges strongly in L to some ũ. Then, we denote by u = P ũ,wherep is the projection on divergence-free vector fields, we also define Q the projection on gradient vector fields), hence ũ = P ũ +Qũ. Moreover, we assume that Φε converges strongly in L to some ϕ. This also implies that ϕε converges to ϕ in L γ. Our last requirement on ρ ε,u ε ) concerns the total energy: we assume that we have t E ε t) + D ε s) ds Eε a.e. t, where and E ε t) = E ε = de ε dt + D ε in D, ), 8) ρ ε u ε a t) + ρε ) γ γρ ε ε ) ) t), γ ) D ε t) = ρ ε µ ε Du ε t) + ξ ε div u ε ) t) u a ) ε + ρ γ ε γ ) ε γ ρ ε )). We now wish to emphasize the fact that we assume the existence of a sequence of solutions with the above properties, and we shall also assume that γ>n/. We recall
4 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) 99 4 the results of Lions [] which yield the existence of such solutions precisely when γ>n/ifn 4, γ 9/5 ifn = 3andγ 3/ ifn =. We also refer to [] for the proof of the uniform bounds. When ε goes to zero and µ ε goes to, we expect that u ε converges to v, the solution of the Euler system { t v + divv v) + π =, div v = v t= = u, in C[,T ); H s ). We show the following theorem 9) THEOREM. The whole space case). We assume that µ ε ε such that µ ε + ξ ε > for all ε) and that P ũ H s for some s>n/ +,thenp ρ ε u ε ) converges to v in L,T; L ) for all T<T,wherev is the unique solution of the Euler system in L loc [,T ); H s ) and T is the existence time of 9). In addition ρ ε u ε converges to v in L p,t; L loc ) for all p<+ and all T<T.... The periodic case Now, we take = T N and consider a sequence of solutions ρ ε,u ε ) of 4), satisfying the same conditions as in the whole space case the functions are now periodic in space and all the integration are performed over T N ). Of course, the conditions at infinity are removed and the spaces L p can be replaced by Lp. Here, we have to impose more conditions on the oscillating part acoustic waves), namely we have to assume that Qũ is more regular than L. In fact, in the periodic case, we do not have a dispersion phenomenon as in the case of the whole space and the acoustic waves will not go to infinity, but they are going to interact with each other. This is way, we have to include them in the energy estimates to show our convergence result. For the next theorem, we assume that Qũ, ϕ H s and that there exists a nonnegative constant ν such that µ ε + ξ ε ν >forallε. For simplicity, we assume that µ ε + ξ ε converges to ν. THEOREM. The periodic case). We assume that µ ε ε such that µ ε + ξ ε ν >) and that P ũ H s for some s>n/ +, and Qũ,ϕ H s then P ρ ε u ε ) converges to v in L,T; L ) for all T<T,wherev is the unique solution of the Euler system in L loc,t ; H s ) and T is the existence time of 9). In addition ρ ε u ε converges weakly to v in L,T; L ). In the above theorem, one can remove the condition ν >. In that case, we still have the result of Theorem. but only on an interval of time,t ) which is the existence interval for the equation governing the oscillating part, which will be given later on. THEOREM.3 The periodic case, ν = ). We assume that µ ε ε such that µ ε + ξ ε ) and that ũ H s for some s>n/ +, and ϕ H s then P ρ ε u ε ) converges to v in L,T; L ) for all T<infT,T ),wherev is the unique solution of the Euler system in L loc,t ; H s ), T is the existence time of 9) and T the existence time of 3), with ν =. In addition ρ ε u ε converges weakly to v in L,T; L ).
5 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) The whole space case We recall that in the case of the whole space, we do not assume any extra condition on the viscosity ξ ε, neither do we assume any regularity more than L ) for the gradient part of the initial data. The proof relies on the dispersion property of the wave equation [8,] and the notion of non dissipative solutions for the Euler system [,]. First, using the energy bounds, we deduce that ρ ε convergestoinl,t; L γ ) and that there exists some u L,T; L ) and a subsequence ρ ε u ε converging weakly to u. Hence, we also deduce that ρ ε u ε converges weakly to u in L γ/γ+).we next introduce the following group Lτ), τ R) defined by e τl where L is the operator defined on D D ) N,by ) ) ϕ div v L =. ) v ϕ It is easy to check that e τl is an isometry on each H s H s ) N for all s R and for all τ. Let us rewrite the energy inequality for almost all t t ρ ε u ε t) + Φε t) + µ ε Du ε + ξ ε div u ε ) ρε u ε + Φε ). 4) Then, the conservation of energy for v reads v t) = and using the fact that L is an isometry on L, we obtain for all t ψ ε,δ t) + q ε,δ t) = u, 5) ψ ε,δ ) + q ε,δ ). 6) Next, the weak formulation of the conservation of mass yields for almost all t ψ ε,δ ϕ ε t) + ε t divρ ε u ε )ψ ε,δ + div q ε,δ )ϕ ε = ψ ε,δ ϕ ε ), 7) while the weak formulation of 4) implies that we have for almost all t t ρ ε u ε.vt) + t t ρ ε u ε. q ε,δ t) + t + t ρ ε u ε u ε. v + µ ε ρ ε u ε.v. v + p) t u ε. v = ) t ρ ε u ε. ε ψ ε,δ µ ε u ε. m ε,δ + ξ ε divu ε ) divm ε,δ ) ε ϕ ε + γ Φ ε ) div q ε,δ ) = ρ ε u ε.u, 8) ρ ε u ε u ε. m ε,δ ρ ε u ε.m ε,δ. 9) Summing up 4), 5), 6) and subtracting 7), 8), 9), we deduce from straightforward computations the following inequality

Finally, we can also deduce the local strong convergence of ρ ε u ε to v in L p,t; L B)). Indeed let us denote by B a bounded domain of R N. Then, we have for all t ρ ε u ε v L B) ρ ε u ε m ε,δ v L B) + m ε,δ L B) ρ ε u ε m ε,δ v L B) + m ε,δ L q B) for any q>. Then, using the fact that for all δ, m ε,δ L p,t ;L q B)) converges to as ε goes to, we conclude easily by taking the limit in ε andtheninδ as above. 3. The periodic case As in the case of the whole space, we can deduce, using the energy bounds, that ρ ε converges strongly to in L,T; L γ ). Then, using the bound on ρ ε u ε in L,T; L ), we may extract a subsequence which converges weakly to some u. To pass to the limit in the equation, we need to describe the oscillations in time and show that they will not affect the limit equation. We next introduce, as in the whole space case, the following group Lτ), τ R) defined by e τl where L is the operator defined on D D ) N,whereD ={ϕ D, ϕ = },by ) ) ϕ div v L =. 5) v ϕ In the sequel, we will use the following notations U ε = ϕ ε,qρ ε u ε ) ) and V ε = L t/ε) ϕ ε,qρ ε u ε ) ), and for some technical reasons related to the L integrability, we will also use the following approximations Ū ε = Φ ε,q ρ ε u ε ) ) and V ε = L t/ε) Φ ε,q ρ ε u ε ) ), which satisfy U ε Ū ε L L γ/γ+) ) when ε. Eq. 7) yields that t U ε = ε LU ε +,F ε ), which can be rewritten as t V ε = L t/ε),f ε ). It is easy to check that F ε is bounded in L H s ) for some s R), hence V ε is compact in time the oscillations have been cancelled). If we had enough compactness in space we could pass to the limit in this equation and recover the following limit system for the oscillating part t V + Q u, V)+ Q V, V) ν V =, 8) where Q and Q are respectively a linear and a bilinear forms in V which will be defined and computed later on) and the term ν V explained below. In fact, as in [7] see also [6]), we consider L t/ε),f ε ) as an almost periodic function in τ = t/ε and compute its mean value, which yields 8). DEFINITION 3.. For all divergence-free vector field u L ) N and all V = ψ, q) L ) N+, we define the following linear and bilinear symmetric forms in V τ ) Q u, V ) = lim L s) ds, 9) τ τ divu L s)v + L s)v u) and τ ) Q V, V ) = lim L s) τ τ div L s)v L s)v ) + γ L ds. 3) s)v ) The convergences stated above takes place in W, and can be shown by using almost-periodic functions see [6] and the references therein). Indeed the functions inside the integral in 9) and 3) are almost periodic in W, and Q u, V ), Q V, V ) are their mean value. We will come back to this issue in the next section. We also remark that in Eq. 8) the viscosity term was divided by and that it applies for both component of the vector V. This is due to the following proposition, which can be proved easily using almost periodic functions see also [5] and [3]). PROPOSITION 3.. Under the same hypothesis on V, we have τ ) ν V = lim L s) ds. 3) τ τ ν L s)v
11 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) Nevertheless, the fact that the viscosity applies now for both components of V is not sufficient to yield compactness in space for V ε. To recover compactness in space, we will use the regularity of the limit system and extend the method used in [] to the case of general initial data as was done in [6]. Let V be the solution of the following system { t V + Q v, V ) + Q V,V ) ν V =, V t= = ϕ,qũ ), 3) where v is, as in the case of the whole space, the solution of the incompressible Euler equations with initial data u. The existence of global strong solutions for the system 3) and local solutions if the viscosity term is removed) as well as the exact computations of the two forms Q and Q will be detailed in the next section. We only need the following two propositions. PROPOSITION 3.3. For all u, V, V and V regular enough to define all the products), we have Q u, V )V = and Q V, V )V =, 33) Q u, V )V + Q u, V )V =, 34) Q V,V )V + Q V,V )V =. 35) The proof of 33) will be given in the next section, 34) can be shown by applying the first part of 33) to V + V and to V V. Finally 35) can be shown by applying the second part of 33) to V + XV and identifying the term of degree. The next proposition is a very simple consequence of the theory of almost-periodic functions see for instance Lemma.3 of [6]). PROPOSITION 3.4. For all u L p,t; L ) and V L q,t; L ), we have the following weak convergences p and q are such that the product are well defined ) w- lim L t ) ) ε ε div u L t ) ε V + t ) ) = Q u, V ) 36) L ε V u and w- lim L t ) ) ε ε div L t ) ε V t ) ) L ε V + γ L t ) ) = Q V, V ). 37) ε V Using the symmetry of Q, we deduce easily the following proposition. PROPOSITION 3.5. Eq. 37) of Proposition 3.4 can be extended to the case where we take V and V using the symmetry of Q, namely

It is also possible to extend it to the case where we replace V in the left hand side by a sequence V ε ε such that V converges strongly to V in L p,t; H s ). In order to show the convergence in Theorem., we will try to estimate t )V ρε u ε v L ε t Φ ε L )V ε L + We also introduce the following notations w ε = ρ ε u ε v L t/ε)v and β ε = Φ ε L t/ε)v. We expect that the following computations will be used in a forthcoming investigation of a new numerical approach to slightly compressible flows. 4.. Computation of Q We recall that = T N and that T N is a periodic domain with periods πa,..., πa N ), where for all i, a i >. Then, we can decompose L ) { q,q H )} into

In the sequel L ) denotes the space of L functions with zero average) ) V k + X) = k e ik.x TN k sgk)k and ) Vk X) = k e ik.x, TN k sgk)k where k is the vector whose components are defined by k i = k i /a i for all i N with k i Z and where the notation k is defined by k = i k i and T N =π) N i a i. Moreover, sgk) is a generalization of the function sign, defined on R N {} by sgk) =+ if and only if there exists i, i N, such that for all j<i,wehave k j = andk i >. Otherwise sgk) =. We think that the introduction of this notation yields much simpler formulae. We only point out that we have LV + k X) = isgk) k V + k X) and LV k X) = isgk) k V k X). Decomposing V on this basis, we have V = k Z N a + k V + k + a k V k. 5) We want to remark here that V k + = V k + and that a+ k = a+ k,sincev is a real function. The same holds with + replaced by. Then, applying the group L, we obtain Ls)V = a k + V k + eisgk) k s + ak V k eisgk) k s. 5) k Z N Next, we can compute easily the term inside the integral in the right hand side of 3) ) L s) ak α aβ l i k + l).[αβsgk) sgl)k l]+ γ k + l) k l k,l α=±,β=± eik+l).x T N k l eiαsgk) k +βsgl) l )s. 5) Projection on Vm γ and on divergence-free vector fields, the function written above can be rewritten as follows F = PF + QF) QFs) = ak α aβ l χ αβγ klm V m γ exp iαsgk) k +βsgl) l γsgm) m )s ), 53) k+l=m α,β,γ =± PFs) = k+l=m α,β=± a α k aβ l U αβ klm exp iαsgk) k +βsgl) l )s ), 54)

Moreover, it is easy to see that F is almost-periodic in s with periods of the form αsgk) k +βsgl) l γsgk + l) k + l and αsgk) k +βsgl) l. Hence, to obtain the limit term in 3), we have to compute the mean value of 5). This is the same as where χ αβγ klm looking at the resonant terms, namely terms which do not depend on s. The resonance condition between k,α),l,β),m,γ)), namely V α k,vβ l,v γ m ) is { k + l = m, αsgk) k +βsgl) l =γsgm) m. 55) Hence, k.l = αsgk)βsgl) k l, which means that k is parallel to l. Rewriting this product again and using that k is parallel to l, we deduce that k.l = sgk) sgl) k l. This yields that we have α = β and then we can see easily that 55) is equivalent to { k + l = m, sgk) k +sgl) l =sgm) m, α = β = γ. 56) More precisely, we can only get resonances between the triplet V k +,V+ l,v m + ) and Vk,V l ) separately. This was the reason why we have introduced the notation,v m sgk). On the other hand, the possible contribution on the divergence-free part requires the following resonance condition αsgk) k +βsgl) l = and hence k = l. Next, using the symmetry between k and l,weget [ u αβ klm + uβα lkm = P α βsgk)sgl)k + l).l k+ k + l).kl ) e ik+l)x + γ ] k + l) k l e ik+l)x =. 57) The above relationship has already been used by Lions and the author in [] to show the weak convergence of the compressible Navier Stokes equations towards the incompressible Navier Stokes equations. It means in some sense that the acoustic waves do not perturb the incompressible flow. Finally, we deduce that Q V, V ) = k+l=m,α=± sgk) k +sgl) l =sgm) m a α k aα l χ α klm V α m, 58) where χ is symmetric in k and l. It only remains to compute χ. By projecting 3) on Vm α,weget χklm α = αsgm)m) TN 3 k l m isgk) sgl)m.kl + γ ) i k l m 59) γ + )sgm) m = iα 4. 6) T N Inorder to understand more the structure of Q, we introduce the set P of prime vectors p, wherep Z N is such that the N components of p are prime in their set.
19 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) This is equivalent to saying that there does not exist any couple n, q) N Z N such that p = nq and n. Then, we define W p X) = k Z, k=kp a sgp) k V sgp) k X). 6) We can associate to the above vector value function the following real value function w p z) = γ + 4 T N k Z, k=kp a sgp) k e ikz. 6) We notice that both W p and w p are real. Indeed, this is a consequence of the fact that V is real. Moreover, we remark that sgp)sgk) k = p k and that for all s R,wehave The following proposition is very easy. π γ + 4 T N W p H s T N ) = p s w p H s T). 63) PROPOSITION 4.. For all p, q P, p q, we have Q W p,w q ) = and the following differential equations are equivalent t V + Q V, V ) ν V =, 64) p P, t w p + p z wp ν p z w p =. 65) This shows that we have to solve an infinite collection of viscous Burgers equations. However, our initial equation is even more complicated and we will see that this collection of viscous Burgers equations is coupled by a coupling coming from the term Q. 4.. Computation of Q We recall that if u is divergence-free it may be written as u = k U k e ik.x, 66) where k.u k =, for all k. Then, using the fact that u is real, we deduce that U k = U k, for all k. Hence, the term inside the integral in the right hand side of 9) is given by L s) ) ak α k,l TN k i e ik+l).x e iαsgk) k s. αsgk)k + l).[ k U l + U l k] α=± 67) Now, we have to look at the resonant terms as we did in the preceding section for Q. The resonance condition between k,α),l,m,γ)), namely Vk α,u l,vm γ ) is { k + l = m, αsgk) k =δsgm) m. 68)
20 8 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) 99 4 We just notice that if Vk α,u l,vm δ ) is a resonant triplet than it is also true for V m δ,u l,v k α ). We will see that this yields the conservation of energy. Of course, we also get other resonances for instance for V k α,u l,v m δ )...Next, we get where Q u, V ) = k+l=m αsgk)=δsgm) k = m a α k σk,u l)v δ m, 69) σk,u l ) = δsgm)m) iαsgk) [m.k U l + k.u l k] ) k m 7) = i m.k k m U l.k. 7) Moreover, using the fact that l.u l =, we get that σ m,u l ) = σk,u l ).Itmustbe noticed that while Q V, V ) is formed by resonances between modes oscillating in the same direction, Q u, V ) is formed by resonances between modes oscillating with the same frequency. This induces some coupling in the limit equation 3) which can be seen as a an infinite collection of coupled viscous Burgers equations. However, we will see that for suitable choices of the periods of the domain this coupling is low. Next, we introduce the following set, that we call the set of trivial resonances A p ={q P, i, q i =±p i }. 7) PROPOSITION 4.. For almost all choices of a,...,a N ) R +N, Q u, V ) reduces to trivial resonances, namely Q u, V ) = More precisely if,..., a an k A m,αsgk)=δsgm) a α k σ α k,u m k )V δ m. 73) are Q independent then the above conclusion holds. The proof of this proposition is very easy. In fact, if,..., a an then the equation are Q independent, N i= k i a i = N i= m i a i 74) has only trivial solutions, namely k i = m i, which means that k A m. Moreover in this case the resonance also holds for the prime represent of k,α) and m,δ), namely q and p such that sgq) = α, k = kq and sgp) = δ, m = mp, sincek = m in this case. However, in the general case, the resonances couple all the different modes.
21 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) To be able to use the notations W p to analyze the limit system, we define C p u, W q ) which is the contribution of W q on W p C p u, W q ) = k+l=m k=kq, m=mp m p =k q a sgq) k σk,u l )V sgp) m. 75) Indeed, using that k = kq, m = mp, the second equation in 68) yields sgq)sgk) k =sgp)sgm) m, 76) from which we deduce the condition m p =k q. We also introduce the corresponding notation for w p c p u, w q ) = With these notations, we can see that k+l=m, k=kq, m=mp, m p =k q a sgq) k σk,u l )e imz. 77) PROPOSITION 4.3. Solving the system 3) for V = p P W p is equivalent to solving the system ICVB) of infinite coupled viscous Burgers equations ICVB) p P, t w p + p z w p ν p z w p + q P c p u, w q ) =. 78) We also notice that, when ν =, the system reduces to an infinite coupled Burgers equations ICB) p P, t w p + p z w p + q P c p u, w q ) =. 79) The proof of the existence of solutions will rely on the energy estimates. Therefore, we begin by proving Proposition 3.3, which is the essence of the conservation of the energy Proof of Proposition 3.3 Let us start by proving the first part of Eq. 33). It is easy to see that if Vk α,u l,vm δ ) is resonant then it is also true for V m δ,u l,v k α ). Moreover using that V is real, we deduce that a k + = a+ k and hence the following computations are obvious Q u, V )V = ak α σk,u l)am α = =. k+l=m, αsgk)=δsgm) k = m k+l=m, αsgk)=δsgm) k = m i m.k Ul.kak α k m aα m U l.mak α m) aα
22 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) 99 4 For the second part of Eq. 33), we just remark that if Vk α,vα l,vm α ) is a resonant triplet, it is also true for Vk α,vα m,vα l ) and V m α,vα l,v k α ). Hence Q V, V )V = ak α aα l χ klm α aα m k+l=m, α=± = γ + ) iα 3 k+l=m, α=± 4 sgm) m a α T N k al α aα m + sg l) l ak α aα m aα l + sg k) k al α ) aα m aα k = Existence of global solutions for the coupled system ICVB) In this subsection, we give a sketch of proof of existence and uniqueness of solutions to ICVB) and hence for 3). Let u L H s ), with s N/ + be a given function the regularity of u can be weakened but u L H s ) is the regularity we get from the fact that u is a solution of the Euler system) and V = p W p H s,wealsodefinew p as above. Then, the following theorem holds THEOREM 4.4. There exists a unique global strong solution for ICVB), with p P, w p L H s T) ) L H s T) ). 8) And hence, we obtain a unique strong solution for 3), with V = p W p L H s T N )) L H s T N )). We are just going to give the a priori bounds we can derive for this system. The existence result is then easily deduced by solving some approximated systems. For instance, we can solve ICVB M ) for all M N, definedbyp M ={p P, p M} and ICVB M ) p P M, t w p + p z wp ν p z w p + c p u, w q ) =. 8) q P M Of course all the a priori estimates we are going to show for ICVB) can be easily extended to ICVB M ). Then, we have just to take the limit M and use a compactness method to pass to the limit. To solve ICVB M ) for fixed M, we can use any classical type of regularization. For instance, one can use a Galerkin approximation method. Now, we turn to the proof of the a priori bounds. If Proposition 3.3 is sufficient to get L energy estimates, we need the following Proposition to get higher order estimates. PROPOSITION 4.5. For all p, q, P and all j N, we have T z j c pu, w q ) p j z j w p + T j z c qu, w p ) q j j z w q =. 8)
23 N. MASMOUDI / Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. non linéaire 8 ) 99 4 Proof. It relies upon the following observations. Since for all resonant triplet Vk α,u l,vm δ ) with sgq) = α, k = kq and sgp) = δ, m = mp), we know that V m δ,u l,v k α ) is also resonant and σ m,u l) = σk,u l ), we obtain a m δ σ m,u l) k j ak α + aα k σk,u l) m j a m δ =. 83) Here, we have also used that m j = m j p j = k j = k j q j. Then, we conclude easily. Using Proposition 3.3, we get the following L energy estimate for all t p P t w p L t) + ν p z w p L w p L ) = C V L. 84) p P Next, for all j N and all p P, wehave t j w p L + ν p j+ w p L + p j+ wp) j w p + T p P T j c p u, w q ) j w p =. 85) q To estimate T j+ w p ) j w p, we need the following PROPOSITION 4.6. Using interpolation inequality, we get j+ wp) j w p C w p L j w L p j+ w L p. 86) T Proof. Indeed, by Hölder inequality, we find j+ w ) p j w p ) j + r w p L s w L r 4 p 4 j w L p T s+r=j+ j r, s + w p L j+ w p L j w L p. 87) Then, using Gagliardo Nirenberg s inequality, we deduce r w p L 4 C w p θ L j+ w p θ L, 88) where 4 s = θ j + )). And, since r + s = j +, we also have and the proposition is proved. s w p L 4 C w p θ L j+ w p θ L 89) Then, multiplying 85) by p j and summing up in p,weget

This yields the following estimate t V H t) + ν j ) C V H C V j+ H exp. 93) j ν The argument, we presented here uses the fact that j N. However, it can be easily adapted to the case where s R, hence we get that and we conclude. t V H s t) + ν ) C t V H C V s+ H s exp, 94) ν 3/ 4.5. Existence of local solutions for the coupled system ICB) In this case the proof is the same, apart from the fact that we can no longer use the effect of the viscosity. Hence, inequality 86) should be replaced by j+ wp) j w p z w p L j w p L. 95) T

Besides, inequality 9) must be replaced by T T t V H j C V 3 H j. 98) In fact, since j>3/, we deduce that z w p L j w p L. Finally, it is easy to see that 98) yields the local existence for ICB).
