1 NOTE ON DOLBEAULT COHOMOLOGY AND HODGE STRUCTURES UP TO BIMEROMORPHISMS DANIELE ANGELLA, TATSUO SUWA, NICOLETTA TARDINI, AND ADRIANO TOMASSINI arxiv: v1 [math.dg] 24 Dec 2017 Abstract. We investigate the stability of the property of satisfying the -Lemma under modifications of compact complex manifolds. More precisely, we study the Dolbeault cohomology of the blowing-up X Z of a compact complex manifold X along a submanifold Z admitting a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood, and we prove that X satisfies the -Lemma if both X and Z do. We use Čech cohomology theory. Similar results have been recently proven in [RYY17, YY17] with different techniques. By considering the orbifold case and resolutions, we provide new examples of compact complex manifolds satisfying the -Lemma. Introduction The -Lemma is a strong cohomological decomposition property defined for compact complex manifolds, which is satisfied for example by algebraic projective manifolds and, more generally, by compact Kähler manifolds. By definition, it means that the Dolbeault cohomology provides a Hodge structure on the de Rham cohomology. It yields strong topological obstructions: the real homotopy type of a compact complex manifold satisfying the -Lemma is a formal consequence of its cohomology ring [DGMS75]. Complex non-kähler manifolds usually do not satisfy the -Lemma: for example, it is never satisfied by nontori compact quotients of nilpotent Lie groups [Has89]. On the other hand, some examples of compact complex non-kähler manifolds satisfying the - Lemma are provided by Moišhezon manifolds and manifolds in class C of Fujiki thanks to [DGMS75, Theorem 5.22], see [Hir62] for a concrete example, or among twistor spaces thanks to the results in [LP92, Theorem 1], [Cam91, Corollary 3.13] and thanks to the stability property of -Lemma Date: December 27, Mathematics Subject Classification. 32Q99, 32C35, 32S45. TOMASSINI for small deformations [Voi02, Proposition 9.21], or among solvmanifolds [AK17, AK17, Kas13b]; other examples are given by Clemens manifolds [Fri91, Fri17], which are constructed by combining modifications and deformations. In particular, [DGMS75, Theorem 5.22] states that, for a modification X X of compact complex manifolds, the property of -Lemma is preserved from X to X. So, it is natural to ask whether it is in fact an invariant property by modifications. This holds true, for example, for compact complex surfaces, thanks to the topological Lamari s and Buchdahl s criterion [Lam99, Buc99]. Note that, in higher dimension, the Kähler property is not stable under modifications; but there are metric properties that are, for example the balanced condition in the sense of Michelsohn [AB96, Corollary 5.7] or the strongly-gauduchon condition in the sense of Popovici [Pop13, Theorem 1.3]. In fact, it is conjectured that the metric balanced condition and the cohomological -Lemma property are strictly related to each other, see for example [Pop15b, Conjecture 6.1], see also [TW13, Pop15a]; and this provides another motivation for the above question. In this note, we compute the Dolbeault cohomology of the blowing-up along a submanifold, under the assumption that the centre admits a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood. We deduce that, in this situation, if both the manifold and the centre satisfy the -Lemma, then the same holds true for the blowing-up, see Theorem 2.1. The argument is an adaptation from the de Rham case in [Voi02, Theorem 7.31] to the Dolbeault case, where we have to consider the -Thom isomorphism with the reduced relative Dolbeault cohomology in [Suw09]. The assumptions include the case when we blow-up a manifold satisfying the -Lemma at a point, see also the explicit computations in Example 2.3. The same argument can be adapted when X is an orbifold in the sense of Satake [Sat56] given by a quotient of a smooth compact complex manifold by a finite group of automorphisms, see Theorem 3.1. We can use such orbifolds to construct new examples of compact complex non-kähler manifolds satisfying the -Lemma, see Examples 3.2 and 3.3. In particular, starting from a manifold isomorphic to the Iwasawa manifold, which does not satisfy the -Lemma, we can construct an orbifold whose smooth resolution is a simply-connected compact complex non-kähler manifold satisfying the -Lemma and endowed with a balanced metric; see Proposition 3.4. Hopefully, a further study of the cohomological properties of submanifolds (see Question 2.4) and a deeper use of techniques as the MacPherson s deformation to the normal cone (see Question 2.5), and thanks also to the Weak Factorization Theorem for bimeromorphic maps in the complexanalytic category [AKMW02, Theorem 0.3.1], [Wlo03], may allow to prove in full generality the stability of -Lemma under modifications, see Remark 2.6. During the preparation of this work, we were informed that Sheng Rao, Song Yang, and Xiangdong Yang solved the same problem in [RYY17, YY17] but with different techniques. While their results and applications are similar, they use sheaf cohomology (both for Dolbeault and for Bott-Chern cohomology) instead of Čech cohomology theory. We also study the orbifold

Dolbeault cohomology of the projectivization of a holomorphic vector bundle We first study the Dolbeault cohomology of the projectivization of a holomorphic vector bundle. Proposition 1.1. Let X be a compact complex manifold satisfying the -lemma and E X be a holomorphic vector bundle of rank r. Then H, (P(E)) is generated by ζ as a H, (X)-algebra, where ζ is the first Chern class of the tautological bundle on P(E). Proof. First of all we consider the bundle P(E) X. Since the fibres are Kähler, by Borel [Hir78, Appendix Two], see also [CF01, Theorem 5], there exists a spectral sequence (E r,d r ) such that E r is 4-graded by the fiber degree, the base degree and the type. The spaces p,q Er u,v are trivial if p+q u+v or if any p,q,u,v is negative. Moreover, since the fibre is Kähler, if p+q = u+v then the second term of the spectral sequence is p,q E u,v 2 k H k,u k (X) H p k,q u+k (P r 1 ) and the sequence converges to H, (P(E)). SinceX satisfies the-lemma, and thanks to the description of the de Rham cohomology of P(E) in [GH78, Proposition page 606], we can conclude. We recall that a compact complex manifold X is said to satisfy the - Lemma if the Dolbeault cohomology provides a Hodge structure in de Rham cohomology, namely, we have natural decompositions HdR k (X;C) = p+q=k H p,q (X) and Hp,q(X) = Hq,p (X), see [DGMS75]. Equivalently, a compact complex manifold X satisfies the -Lemma if the natural map H, BC (X) H dr (X;C) induced by the identity is injective [DGMS75, Proposition 5.1], where H, ker ker BC (X) = denotes the Bott-Chern cohomology. A numerical characterization of the -Lemma in terms of the dimension of the Bott-Chern im cohomology and the Betti numbers is provided in [AT13]. Corollary 1.2. Let X be a compact complex manifold satisfying the lemma and E X be a holomorphic fibre bundle of rank r. Then P(E) satisfies the -lemma. Proof. The statement follows by the explicit expressions of the de Rham cohomology of P(E) as in [GH78, Proposition page 606], and of the Dolbeault cohomology of P(E) as in Proposition 1.1. Remark 1.3. Recall that if we consider τ: XZ X the blowing-up of a compact complex manifold X along a submanifold Z, then the exceptional divisor is isomorphic to P(N Z X ), i.e. the projectivization of the normal bundle of Z in X. In particular, if we assume that Z satisfies the -lemma, then we can apply Proposition 1.1 to study the Dolbeault cohomology of P(N Z X ) and to conclude that also the exceptional divisor satisfies the - Lemma. 2. Stability of strong Hodge decomposition under blowing-ups We can now prove the main theorem. Compare also [YY17, Theorem 1.3] for a similar results using Bott-Chern cohomology. Here, we assume that Z has a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood, that is, U Z with r: U Z holomorphic such that r Z = id. Theorem 2.1. Let X be a compact complex manifold of complex dimension n, and j: Z X be a submanifold of complex dimension d and codimension k := n d, and consider τ: XZ X the blowing-up of X along the centre Z. Assume that Z has a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood. If both X and Z satisfy the -Lemma, then also X Z does satisfy the -Lemma. Proof. Let E denote the exceptional divisor of the blowing-up. We claim that, under the assumption on Z, for the de Rham, respectively Dolbeault

By excision, the inclusion map (V,V \Z) (X,X \Z) induces isomorphism in relative cohomology; moreover, we use homotopy invariance and the Thom isomorphism; finally we have H +2k (X,X \ Z;C) H +2k (V,V \ Z;C) H +2k (D,S;C) H (Z;C), where D Z and S Z are the disc bundle, respectively the unit sphere bundle with respect to some fixed metric on V. Similarly, H +2 ( X, X \E;C) H (E;C). Finally we get H 2k (Z;C) H (X;C) H 2 (E;C) H ( X;C), and H ( X;C) is universal, so the pushout. In the Dolbeault case, we argue in the same way by using the -Thom isomorphism with the reduced relative Dolbeault cohomology in [Suw09]. (Compare also [RYY17, Main Theorem 1.1] for a different argument, and [YY17, Theorem 1.2] for a similar formula for Bott-Chern cohomology.) Consider the relative Dolbeault cohomology for the pair (X, Z), respectively ( X,E), which is defined as relative cohomology with values in the sheaf of holomorphic forms, or as relative Cech-Dolbeault cohomology as in [Suw09]. We have the exact sequence H p,q 1 (X,X\Z) H p,q (X,X\Z) H p,q (X) H p,q (X\Z), and similar for ( X,E). So, as before, we are reduced to study the diagram H p,q (X,X \Z) H p,q (X) H p,q ( X, X \E) H p,q ( X).

We first notice that, if Z admits a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood U, then the same happens for E: set Ũ = τ 1 (U) such a neighbourhood for the exceptional divisor. By excision, we are reduced to study the groups H p,q (U,U \Z) and Hp,q(Ũ,Ũ \E). In this situation, we can construct the -Thom homomorphisms [Suw09, Section 7] as splitting for the sequences 0 ker π H p+k,q+k (U,U \Z) π H p,q (Z) 0, respectively 0 ker π H p+1,q+1 π (Ũ,Ũ \E) H p,q (E) 0, where π denotes the integration along the fibres of r: U Z, respectively r: Ũ E. Differently from the de Rham case, the -Thom homomorphism T U : H p,q (Z) Hp+k,q+k(U,U \Z) is not an isomorphism, becauseh p+k,q+k (U, U\Z) has an infinite-dimensional (U,U \Z) = ker π depending on the normal direction of Z in part Ȟp+k,q+k X, and a finite dimensional part Ĥp+k,q+k (U,U \Z) := im T U ; but it is an isomorphism [Suw09, Theorem 7.5, Remark 7.9] on the image, that is, if we restrict to the reduced relative Dolbeault cohomology Ĥp+k,q+k (U,U \Z): T U : H p,q (Z) Ĥp+k,q+k (U,U \Z). The same happens for E: so we decompose H p+1,q+1 (Ũ,Ũ \E) as the sum of an infinite-dimensional part Ȟp+1,q+1 (Ũ,Ũ \ E) = ker π, and a finitedimensional part Ĥp+1,q+1 (Ũ,Ũ \E) = im TŨ, and we have a Thom isomorphism TŨ: H p,q (E) Ĥp+1,q+1 (Ũ,Ũ \E). We claim that the infinite-dimensional parts in the relative cohomologies for E and Z are the same, since τ: Ũ \E U \Z is a biholomorphism. Then the above diagram reduces to H p k,q k (Z) H p,q (X) H p 1,q 1 (E) H p,q ( X), where H p,q ( X) is universal. We recall that the -Lemma for X is characterized by isomorphisms p+q= Hq (X;Ω p ) H (X;C) inducing a -weighted Hodge structure on H (X;Z) [DGMS75, 5.21]. By naturality of the limit, if we assume that this condition holds for both X and Z, and also for E thanks to Corollary 1.2, then it holds for X Z, too. Indeed, the morphisms of the existing Hodge structures and the universality of the pushout induces a Hodge structure on H ( X;C) in terms of H, ( X), proving the statement.

The condition regarding Z in Theorem 2.1 holds true, for example, if Z is a point (see Example 2.3), or if X is a fibration (e.g. a Hopf manifold) with Z a fibre. Example 2.3 (Blowing-up in a point; see also [YY17, Proposition 3.6]). The very particular case when Z is a point is easier, and follows by the description of the Dolbeault cohomology in [GH78]. For completeness we outline the proof in this situation. Let X be a compact complex manifold and consider τ: X X the blow-up of X on a point p. If X satisfies the -Lemma, then also X does. We denote with E = P n 1 = τ 1 (p) the exceptional divisor of the blowup. We recall that the de Rham and Dolbeault cohomologies of X and X are related as follows (see [GH78, pages ]): for k / {0, 2n}, for (p,q) / {(0,0), (n,n)}, H ( X,C) = H (X,C) H (E,C) and H, ( X) = H, (X) H, (E). In particular, h p,p ( X) = h p,p (X)+1 and h p,q ( X) = h p,q (X) for p q. H t,v ( X) The statement follows by the characterization of the -Lemma in [DGMS75, Proposition 5.17]. Question 2.4. We ask whether a submanifold of a manifold satisfying the -Lemma, still satisfies the -Lemma. Note that, in general, existence of Hodge structures is not preserved by blowing-ups: Claire Voisin suggested to us an example that appears in [Vul12] by Victor Vuletescu: take the blowingup of a Hopf surface inside S 3 S 3 P 1. (Compare also [YY17, Concluding Remarks].) Question 2.5. We ask whether if X and Z satisfy the -Lemma, then we can perform constructions like the deformation to the normal cone for (X, Z) that still satisfies the -Lemma. We recall that the deformation to the normal cone by MacPherson [Ful84, Chapter 5] allows to modify the pair (X,Z) to the pair (N Z X,Z) as deformation, where clearly Z has the property of admitting a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood in its normal bundle N Z X. We briefly recall the construction, see also [Suw09, Section 8]: consider a 1-dimensional disc D; define X := Bl Z {0} (X D)\Bl Z {0} (X {0}) that provides a deformation path through X t = X to X 0 = N Z X. We

We also recall that satisfying the -Lemma is an open property under deformations [Voi02, Proposition 9.21], but in general it is not closed [AK17]. Remark 2.6. If Questions 2.5 and 2.4 have positive answers, then we would have that the -Lemma property is defined inside the localization of the category of holomorphic maps with respect to bimeromorphisms, equivalently, modifications. More precisely: Let f: M N be a bimeromorphic map between compact complex manifolds of the same dimension. Then M satisfies the -Lemma if and only if N does. (The same would be true assuming M Kähler without Question 2.4.) Indeed, this will follow by the Weak Factorization Theorem for bimeromorphic maps between compact complex manifolds [AKMW02, Theorem 0.3.1], [Wlo03]. It states that f can be functorially factored as a sequence of blowing-ups and blowing-downs with non-singular centres. For a blowing-up ϕ: V V, we have that: if V satisfies the -Lemma, then V does by [DGMS75, Theorem 5.22]; if V satisfies the -Lemma, then V does by Theorem 2.1. (Compare also [RYY17, Question 1.2].) 3. The orbifold case We now consider the orbifold case, adapting the argument by means of the orbifold Dolbeault cohomology studied in [Bai54, Bai56]. Recall that an orbifold, also called V-manifold [Sat56], is a singular complex space whose singularities are locally isomorphic to quotient singularities C n /G, where G GL(n;C) is a finite subgroup. Tensors on an orbifold are defined to be locally G-invariant. In particular, this yields the notions of orbifold de Rham cohomology and orbifold Dolbeault cohomology, for which we have both a sheaf-theoretic and an analytic interpretation [Sat56, Bai54, Bai56], and Hodge decomposition in cohomology defines the orbifold -Lemma property. The following result generalizes Theorem 2.1 to orbifolds of global-quotient type, namely, X/G, where X is a complex manifold and G is a finite group of biholomorphisms of X. That is, we can interpret this case as the smooth case with the further action of a group G: for example, an orbifold morphism Z/H X/G is just an equivariant map Z X. The orbifold Dolbeault cohomology of X/G is the cohomology of the complex of G-invariant forms, ( (, X) G, ). The notion of -Lemma for orbifolds refers to the cohomological decomposition for the double complex ( (, X) G,, ). This result will let us construct new examples of compact complex manifolds satisfying the -Lemma, as resolutions of orbifolds obtained starting for example from compat quotient of solvable Lie group. Theorem 3.1. Let X o = X/G be a compact complex orbifold of complex dimension n, and j o : Z o = Z/G X o be a suborbifold of complex dimension d and codimension k := n d, and consider τ o : XZ o X o the blowing-up of X o along the centre Z o. Assume that Z o has a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood. If both X o and Z o satisfy the -Lemma, then also X Z does satisfy the -Lemma.
9 DOLBEAULT COHOMOLOGY FOR BIMEROMORPHISMS 9 Proof. We first notice that X Z itself is a (possibly smooth) orbifold of globalquotient type. Indeed, by the universal property of blowing-up, see e.g. [GH78, page 604], the action G X yields the action G X Z. We also notice that H dr (Xo ;C) = H dr (X)G, that is, the G-invariant subgroup of the cohomology. Indeed, the map [α] H dr (Xo ;C) H dr (X)G, where α ( X) G, is clearly well-defined. It is injective: indeed, if α = dβ, ( 1 ordg then α = 1 ordg g G g α = d g G g 1 β where ordg g G g β ( X) G. Finally, it is surjective: indeed, take a G-invariant metric on X; since X also is compact, then, by elliptic Hodge theory, any class in H dr (X) admits a unique harmonic representative with respect to g; by uniqueness of the harmonic representative, it is the same as the harmonic representative on X o whose existence is assured by [Bai56, Theorem H]. The argument goes in the same way for Dolbeault cohomology, where existence of harmonic representatives on orbifolds is proven in [Bai56, Theorem K]. Now, we notice that the maps in (1) are G-equivariant, so the de Rham and the Dolbeault cohomologies of X o are the pushout of the corresponding diagrams for the orbifold. The same argument as in Theorem 2.1 yields the statement. Example 3.2 (resolution of an orbifold covered by the Nakamura manifold). In this first example, starting with the completely-solvable Nakamura manifold [Nak75], which does satisfy the -Lemma, we construct a complex orbifold and its resolution, both satisfying the -Lemma. Let X be the compact complex manifold given by X = (C ϕ C 2 )/((az+b 1Z) φ Γ ), ) where φ(x+ 1y) = ( ) exp(x) 0, b πz, 0 exp( x) and a R and Γ is a lattice of C 2, say, Γ = Z[ 1] 2. See [Nak75, page 90] and [FMS03, Example 3.1]; see also case (C) in [Kas13a, Example 1]. The underlying differentiable structure can be described as follows. Fix λ R such that exp(λ) + exp( λ) Z\{2}. The manifold X is a compact quotient of a completely-solvable Lie group G by a discrete co-compact subgroup Γ. Since X is a completely-solvable solvmanifold, then it admits no Kähler structures by [Has89], see also [FMS03, Theorem 3.3]. The complex structure of X is induced by the linear complex structure on g defined by Je 1 := e 2, Je 3 := e 5, Je 4 := e 6. By a result of Kasuya s [Kas13a], also the Dolbeault cohomology of the complex manifold X can be computed by means of a finite-dimensional subcomplex of the complex of forms, and it turns out that the Dolbeault cohomology is invariant, too. Now, starting from X, we construct a complex orbifold. Let σ be the subgroup of Aut(X) defined by σ(x 1,x 2,x 3,x 4,x 5,x 6 ) := ( x 1, x 2, x 4,x 3, x 6,x 5 ). We notice that σ is linear and that Γ is σ-invariant; therefore we call X o the orbifold given by the global quotient X o := X/ σ.

Clearly, X o still satisfies the -Lemma. In order to obtain a smooth compact complex manifold satisfying the -lemma, we resolve the singularities. Note that the singular locus of X o consists just of 2 6 isolated points. By blowing-up, each point is replaced by an exceptional divisor on which the action is, in local coordinates centered at the point, σ: [z 1 : z 2 : z 3 ] [z 1 : z 3 : z 2 ]. The space is still a non-smooth orbifold, since the fixed point of the action are [1 : 0 : 0], [ 0 : 1 : 1 ] and [ 0 : 1 : 1 ]. The first blowing-up still gives fixed points [0 : 1 : 1] and [0 : 1 : 1] in local coordinates centered at the point. At the end of the procedure, we get a smooth resolution X by just blowing-up points. By Theorem 3.1, X still satisfies the -Lemma. Notice that the Hermitian metric j=1 ϕj ϕ j on X is σ-invariant and therefore it descends to the orbifold giving a Hermitian metric on X o. It turns out to be balanced. Therefore we can get a balanced metric on X thanks to [AB96]. Example 3.3 (resolution of an orbifold covered by the Iwasawa manifold). In this example, starting from a smooth compact complex manifold which does not satisfy the -lemma, we construct a simply-connected smooth compact complex manifold that does. TOMASSINI It is a nilpotent Lie group, and it is endowed with a left-invariant complex structure defined by the coframe of (1,0)-forms They have structure equations ϕ 1 := dz 1, ϕ 2 := dz 2, ϕ 3 := dz 3 z 1 dz 2. dϕ 1 = 0, dϕ 2 = 0, dϕ 3 = ϕ 1 ϕ 2. Let ξ 1 be a cubic root of the unity, and Λ be the lattice generated by 1 and ξ. Consider the subgroup Γ in G consisting of matrices with entries in Λ. The compact quotient M := G/Γ is a holomorphically-parallelizable nilmanifold. By [Nom54, Sak76], the de Rham and Dolbeault cohomologies of M are the same as the cohomologies of the Iwasawa manifold, which are computed for instance in [Sch07]. We consider the following action of the finite group Z 3 on G: σ: (z 1,z 2,z 3 ) (ξz 1,ξz 2,ξ 2 z 3 ). It is easy to check that the action is linear, and since ξ 2 = 1 ξ then Γ is σ-invariant. Therefore we get an action on the quotient M, and a complex space M o := M/ σ with orbifold singularities. The action on the global co-frame of (1,0)-forms becomes σ (ϕ 1 ) = ξϕ 1, σ (ϕ 2 ) = ξϕ 2, σ (ϕ 3 ) = ξ 2 ϕ 3. We compute the orbifold de Rham and Dolbeault cohomologies by taking the σ-invariant forms. We have M o = ( M) σ = 1,ϕ 13,ϕ 23,ϕ 1 1,ϕ 1 2,ϕ 2 1,ϕ 2 2,ϕ 3 3,ϕ 1 3,ϕ 2 3,ϕ 12 3,ϕ as an algebra, with the only non-trivial differentials dϕ 3 3 = ϕ 12 3 ϕ 3 1 2, dϕ 12 3 = dϕ = ϕ It is straightforward to check that this complex satisfies the -Lemma, that is, the orbifold M o satisfies the -lemma. Now we resolve the singularities of M o in order to obtain a simplyconnected smooth compact complex manifold satisfying the -lemma. The procedure is similar to the one described in [FM08]. The singular locus of M o consists of 3 3 isolated singular points. By blowing-up each point, we get an exceptional divisor CP 2 /Z 3, where the action is given by σ: [z 1 : z 2 : z 3 ] [z 1 : z 2 : ξz 3 ]. The singular locus consists now of the isolated point q := [0 : 0 : 1] and of the complex projective line L := {[z 1 : z 2 : 0]} CP 2, which both admit a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood. Finally, by blowing-up the qs and the Ls, we get a smooth model M. Thanks to Theorem 3.1, the performed operations mantain the -Lemma property. In fact, the same argument as [FM08, Proposition 2.3] adapted to our manifold M, which is a principal 2-torus bundle over a 4-torus, yields that M is simply-connected. Moreover, the metric 1 3 ω := ϕ j ϕ j 2 j=1

Starting from a manifold isomorphic to the Iwasawa manifold, one can construct M a simply-connected compact complex non-kähler manifold such that: it is non-kähler, in fact it does not belong to class C of Fujiki; it satisfies the -Lemma; and it is endowed with a balanced metric.
