EQUICONTINUOUS FAMILIES OF MARKOV OPERATORS IN VIEW OF ASYMPTOTIC STABILITY SANDER C. HILLE, TOMASZ SZAREK, AND MARIA A. ZIEMLAŃSKA arxiv: v1 [math.pr] 6 Oct 2017 Abstract. Reation between equicontinuity the so-caed e property and stabiity of Markov operators is studied. In particuar, it is shown that any asymptoticay stabe Markov operator with an invariant measure such that the interior of its support is nonempty satisfies the e property. 1. Introduction This paper is centered around two concepts of equicontinuity for Markov operators defined on probabiity measures on Poish spaces: the e-property and the Cesàro e-property. Both appeared as a condition (among others) in the study of ergodicity of Markov operators. In particuar they are very usefu in proving existence of a unique invariant measure and its asymptotic stabiity: at whatever probabiity measure one starts, the iterates under the Markov operator wi weaky converge to the invariant measure. The first concept appeared in [8, 12] whie the second was introduced in [14] as a theoretica generaisation of the first and aowed the author to extend various resuts by repacing the e-property condition by apparenty weaker the Cesàro e-property condition, among others. Interest in equicontinuous famiies of Markov operators existed aready before the introduction of the e-property. Jamison [6], working on compact metric state spaces, introduced the concepts of (dua) Markov operators on the continuous functions that are uniformy stabe or uniformy stabe in mean to obtain a kind of asymptotic stabiity resuts in this setting. Meyn and Tweedie [10] introduced the so-caed e-chains on ocay compact Hausdorff topoogica state spaces, for simiar purposes. See aso [15] for resuts in a ocay compact metric setting. The above mentioned concepts were used in proving ergodicity for some Markov chains (see [11, 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 13]). Date: September 19, Mathematics Subject Cassification. 37A30, 60J05. Key words and phrases. Markov operator, asymptotic stabiity, e-property, Cesàro e-property, equicontinuity, tightness. 2 2 SANDER C. HILLE, TOMASZ SZAREK, AND MARIA A. ZIEMLAŃSKA It is worth mentioning here that simiar concepts appear in the study of mean equicontinous dynamica systems mainy on compact spaces (see for instance [9]). However it must be stressed here that our space of Bore probabiity measures defined on some Poish space is non-compact. Studing the e property the natura question arose whether any asymptoticay stabe Markov operator satisfies this property. Proposition in [10] says that this hods when the phase space is compact. In particuar, the authors showed that the stronger e chain property is satisfied. Unfortunatey, the proof contains a gap and it is quite easy to construct an exampe showing that some additiona assumptions must be then added. On the other hand, striving to repair the gap of the Meyn-Tweedie resut mentioned above, we show that any asymptoticay stabe Markov operator with an invariant measure such that the interior of its support is nonempty satisfies the e property. 2. Preiminaries Let (S,d) be a Poish space. By B(x,r) we denote the open ba in (S,d) of radius r, centered at x S and B(x,r) denotes its boundary. Further E, Int S E denote the cosure of E S and the interior of E, respectivey. By C b (S) we denote the vector space of a bounded rea-vaued continuous functions on S and by B b (S) a bounded rea-vaued Bore measurabe functions, both equipped with the supremum norm. By L b (S) we denote the subspace of C b (S) of a bounded Lipschitz functions (for the metric d on S). For f L b (S), Lipf denotes the Lipschitz constant of f. By M(S) we denote the famiy of a finite Bore measures on S and by P(S) the subfamiy of a probabiity measures in M(S). For µ M(S), its support is the set suppµ := {x S : µ(b(x,r)) > 0 for a r > 0}. An operator P : M(S) M(S) is caed a Markov operator (on S) if it satisfies the foowing two conditions: (i) (Positive inearity) P(λ 1 µ 1 +λ 2 µ 2 ) = λ 1 Pµ 1 +λ 2 Pµ 2 for λ 1,λ 2 0; µ 1,µ 2 M(S); (ii) (Preservation of the norm) Pµ(S) = µ(s) for µ M(S). A measure µ is caed invariant if Pµ = µ. A Markov operator P is asymptoticay stabe if there exists a unique invariant measure µ P(S) such that P n µ µ weaky as n for every µ P(S). For brevity we sha use the notation: f,µ := f(x)µ(dx) S for f B b (S), µ M(S).
EQUICONTINUOUS FAMILIES OF MARKOV OPERATORS 3 A Markov operator P is reguar if there exists a inear operator U : B b (S) B b (S) such that f,pµ = Uf,µ for a f B b (S), µ M(S). The operator U is caed the dua operator of P. A reguar Markov operator is a Feer operator if its dua operator U maps C b (S) into itsef. Equivaenty, P is Feer if it is continuous in the weak topoogy (cf. [14], Proposition 3.2.2). A Feer operator P satisfies the e property at z S if for any f L b (S) we have (1) imimsup U n f(x) U n f(z) = 0, x z i.e., if the famiy of iterates {U n f : n N} is equicontinuous at z S. We say that a Feer operator satisfies the e property if it satisfies it at any z S. D. Worm sighty generaized the e property introducing the Cesáro e property (see [14]). Namey, a Feer operator P wi satisfy the Cesáro e property at z S if for any f L b (S) we have 1 n (2) imimsup U k f(x) 1 n U k f(z) x z n n = 0. k=1 Anaogousy a Feer operator satisfies the Cesáro e property if it satisfies this property at any z S. The foowing simpe exampe shows that Proposition in [10] fais. Exampe 2.1. Let S = {1/n : n 1} {0} and et T : S S be given by the foowing formua: T(0) = T(1) = 0 and T(1/n) = 1/(n 1) for n 2. The operator P : M(S) M(S) given by the formua Pµ = T (µ) (the pushforward measure) is asymptoticay stabe but it does not satisfy the e property at 0. Jamison [6] introduced for a Markov operator the property of uniform stabiity in mean when {U n f : n N} is an equicontinuous famiy of functions in the space of rea-vaued continuous function C(S) for every f C(S). Here C is a compact metric space. Since the space of bounded Lipschitz functions is dense for the uniform norm in the space of bounded uniform continuous functions, this property coincides with the Cesáro e property for compact metric spaces. Now, if the Markov operator P on the compact metric space is asymptoticay stabe, with the invariant measure µ M 1, then 1 n n i=1 Ui f f,µ pointwise, for every f C(S). According to Theorem 2.3 in [6] this impies that P is uniformy stabe in mean, i.e., has the Cesáro e property. Exampe 2.2. Let (k n ) n 1 be an increasing sequence of prime numbers. Set S := {( k i n 1 times k=1 0,...,0, i/k n,0,...) : i {0,...,k n },n N}.
4 SANDER C. HILLE, TOMASZ SZAREK, AND MARIA A. ZIEMLAŃSKA The set S endowed with the -norm is a (noncompact) Poish space. Define T : S S by the formua and T(( k i n 1 times T((0,...)) = T(( 0,...,0, i/k n,0,...)) = ( k kn n 1 times 0,...,0, 1,0,...)) = (0,...,0,...) for n N k i+1 n 1 times 0,...,0, (i+1)/k n,0,...) for i {1,...,k n 1},n N. The operator P : M(S) M(S) given by the formua Pµ = T (µ) is asymptoticay stabe but it does not satisfy the Cesáro e property at 0. Indeed, if we take an arbitrary continuous function f : S R + such that f((0,...,0,...)) = 0 and f(x) = 1 for x S such that x 1/2 we have 1 k n k n i=1 k n 1 U i f(( 0,...,0,1/k n,0,...)) 1 k n U i f((0,...)) 1/2. k n We are in a position to formuate the main resut of our paper: Theorem 2.3. Let P be an asymptoticay stabe Feer operator and et µ be its unique invariant measure. If Int S (suppµ ), then P satisfies the e property. Its proof invoves the foowing emma: Lemma 2.4. Let P be an asymptoticay stabe Feer operator and et µ be its unique invariant measure. Let U be dua to P. If Int S (suppµ ), then for every f C b (S) and any ε > 0 there exists a ba B suppµ and N N such that (3) U n f(x) U n f(y) ε for any x,y B, n N. Proof. Fix f C b (S) and ε > 0. Let W be an open set such that W suppµ. Set Y = W and observe that the subspace Y is a Baire space. Set and observe that Y n is cosed and Y n := {x Y : U m f(x) f,µ ε/2 for a m n} Y = Y n. n=1 By the Baire category theorem there exist N N such that Int Y Y N. Thus there exists a set V Y N open in the space Y and consequenty a ba B in S such that B Y N suppµ. Since condition (3) is satisfied. U n f(x) f,µ ε/2 for any x B and n N, We are ready to prove Theorem 2.3. i=1
EQUICONTINUOUS FAMILIES OF MARKOV OPERATORS 5 Proof. Assume, contrary to our caim, that P does not satisfy the e property. Therefore there exist a function f C b (S) and a point S such that Choose ε > 0 such that im sup x im sup x imsup U n f(x) U n f( ) > 0. imsup U n f(x) U n f( ) 3ε. Let B := B(z,2r) be a ba such that condition (3) hods. Since B(z,r) suppµ, we have γ := µ (B(z,r)) > 0. Choose α (0,γ). Since the operator P is asymptoticay stabe, we have (4) im inf Pn µ(b(z,r)) > α by the Aexandrov theorem (see [3]). for a µ P(S), Let k 1 be such that 2(1 α) k f < ε. By induction we are going to define two sequences of measures (ν i ) k i=1, (µ i ) k i=1 and a sequence of integers (n i ) k i=1 in the foowing way: et n 1 1 be such that (5) P n 1 δ x0 (B(z,r)) > α. Choose r 1 < r such that P n 1 δ x0 (B(z,r 1 )) > α and P n 1 δ x0 ( B(z,r 1 )) = 0 and set (6) ν 1 ( ) = Pn 1 δ x0 ( B(z,r 1 )) P n 1 δx0 (B(z,r 1 )) and (7) µ 1 ( ) = 1 1 α (Pn 1 δ x0 ( ) αν 1 ( )). Assume that we have done it for i = 1,...,, for some < k. Now et n +1 be such that (8) P n +1 µ (B(z,r)) > α. Choose r +1 < r such that P n +1 µ (B(z,r +1 )) > α and P n +1 µ ( B(z,r +1 )) = 0 and set (9) ν +1 ( ) = Pn +1 µ ( B(z,r +1 )) P n +1 µ (B(z,r +1 )) and (10) µ +1 ( ) = 1 ( P n +1 µ ( ) αν +1 1 α ( )). We are done. We have P n n k δ x0 ( ) = αp n n k ν 1 ( )+α(1 α)p n n k ν 2 ( ) α(1 α) k 1 ν k ( )+(1 α)k µ k ( ). By induction we check that νi x ν i 0 and µ x i µ i 0 weaky as d(x, ) 0. Indeed, if i = 1, then ν1 x ν 1 0 weaky (as d(x, ) 0), by the fact that P is a Feer operator and im d(x,x0 ) 0P n 1 δ x (B(z,r 1 )) = P n 1 δ x0 (B(z,r 1 )), by the Aexandrov theorem due to the
6 SANDER C. HILLE, TOMASZ SZAREK, AND MARIA A. ZIEMLAŃSKA fact that P n 1 δ x0 ( B(z,r 1 )) = 0. On the other hand, the weak convergence µ x 1 µ 1 0 as d(x, ) 0 foows directy from the definition of µ x 1. Moreover, observe that for x sufficienty cose to we have P n 1 δ x (B(z,r)) > α and therefore µ x 1 P(S). Assumenowthatwehaveprovedthatν i x ν i 0andµ x i µ i 0weakyasd(x, ) 0 for i = 1,...,. We show that ν+1 x ν +1 0 and µx +1 µ +1 0 weaky as d(x,) 0 too. Anaogousy, im d(x,x0 ) 0P n +1 µ x (B(z,r +1)) = P n +1 µ (B(z,r +1 )), by the Aexandrov theorem due to the fact that P n +1 µ ( B(z,r +1 )) = 0 and from the definition of ν+1 x we obtain that νx +1 ν +1 0 weaky as d(x,) 0. The weak convergence µ x +1 µ +1 0 as d(x,) 0 foows now directy from the definition of µ x +1 and for x sufficienty cose to we have P n +1 µ x (B(z,r)) > α and therefore µ x +1 P(S). We are done. Observe that for any x sufficienty cose to and a n n n k we have P n δ x ( ) = αp n n 1 ν x 1 ( )+α(1 α)pn n 1 n 2 ν x 2 ( )+... +α(1 α) k 1 P n n 1... n k ν x k ( )+(1 α)k P n n 1... n k µ x k ( ), where suppν x i B(z,r) for a i = 1,...,k. Thus im sup f,p n νi x f,p n ν (11) i = imsup ε/2+ε/2 = ε for a i = 1,...,k and x sufficienty cose to. Hence 3ε < imsup x imsup U n f(x) U n f( ) = imsup U n f f,µ,ν x i U n f f,µ,ν i x imsup f,p n δ x f,p n δ x0 ε(α+α(1 α)+...α(1 α) k 1 )+2(1 α) k f ε+ε = 2ε, which is impossibe. This competes the proof. Acknowedgements. We thank Kaudiusz Czudek for providing us with Exampe 1. References [1] Czapa, D.
