A METRIC DISCREPANCY RESULT FOR GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION WITH RATIO /2 arxiv: v [math.nt] 0 Mar 208 Katusi Fukuyama Dedicated to Professor Norio Kôno on his 80th birthday. Abstract. We prove the law of the iterated logarithm for discrepancies of the sequence {/2 k x}.. Introduction A sequence {x k } of real numbers is said to be uniformly distributed mod u.d. mod if lim N # {k N x k [a,b} = b a for all 0 a < b, N where x denotes the fractional part x [x] of x. Since the convergence is uniform in a and b, we use the following discrepancy D N {x k } to measure the speed of convergence: D N {x k } = sup # {k N x k [a,b} b a N. 0 a<b For a sequence {n k } with n k+ n k C > 0, Weyl [] proved D N {n k x} 0 for almost every x. Erdős-Gál conjecture Cf. [2] statedthat{n k x}imitatesthebehaviorofindependentrandomvariables and satisfies ND N {n k x} = ON loglogn /2 under Hadamard s gap condition n k+ /n k q >. Philipp [9] applied the method oftakahashi [0] and solved the conjecture affirmatively by proving 4 2 lim ND N {n k x} a.e. N 2N loglogn 2 q /2 The research is partially supported by JSPS KAKENHI 6K05204 and 5KT006.
2 K. Fukuyama Recently the upper bound was replaced by /2 +4/ q /2 Cf. [6] and the lower bound by /2 2 Cf. []. For geometric progressions {θ k x} with θ >, we can prove the law of the iterated logarithm in exact form as below [, 4]: lim N ND N {θ k x} 2N loglogn = Σ θ a.e. x. Here Σ θ /2 is a constant determined by θ in the following way. If θ k / Q for all k =, 2,..., then Σ θ = 2. Otherwise denote by r the smallest positive k with θ k Q, and denote θ r = p/q by p Z and q N with gcdp,q =. We can prove that the value Σ θ does not depend on r and is determined only by p and q, i.e., Σ θ = Σ p/q. When both of p and q are odd numbers, then [, 4] Σ p/q = p q + 2 p q. If p is odd, q is even and p /q 9/4, or if p is even, q is odd and p /q 4, then [8] p q I + p q p q I v 2 p q Σ p/q = + 2 p qi I p q I p q mv q m p q, 2 p q m= where I = min{n N q n = ± mod p q} and vx = x x. In particular, when q =, we have Σ p = p + or Σ p = p + p p 2 2 p 2 p according as p is odd or p 4 is even. These cases are included in the above formula, but the proof should be done separately [, 4]. As excluded examples of the fomula, we have [, 5] Σ 2 = 9 42 and Σ 2 =
A metric discrepancy result for geometric progression with ratio /2 From now on we restrict ourselves to the case of positive p. If p is positive, we can prove [], Σ 2 θ = sup σθ 2 a = sup Va,a+2 0 a 0 a k= V p k a, q k a p k q k, where Vx,ξ = x ξ xξ. When pq is even and p/q is large, the formula derived from p q /2 2 Σ p/q = σ p/q. p q There is a tendency that V p k a, q k a has large local maximum when p k a = q k a or a = n/p k q k holds for some n N. Actually we can find several p/q such that n Σ p/q = σ p/q p k q k holds for some n N, and we say that p/q is of type k. The formula 2 shows that p/q is of type I if pq is even and p/q is large. Since we have Σ 2 = σ , we see that 2 = 2/ is of type II. We are now in a position to state our result. It asserts that /2 is of type VI. Theorem. We have 277 Σ /2 = σ / = Before closing introduction, we state related results. Although /6 is less than the threshold, we can still prove that it is of type I: Σ /6 = σ /6 =
4 K. Fukuyama We can also find numbers of types II, III, IV, and V: 24 Σ 4/ = σ 4/ 4 2 2, Σ 8/ = σ 8/ 8 2 2, Σ 0/ = σ 0/ 0 2 2, Σ 2/5 = σ 2/ , Σ 7/8 = σ 7/ , Σ 9/0 = σ 9/0 9 0, Σ 2/7 = σ 2/ , Σ 8/5 = σ 8/ These results will be proved in a separate paper [7]. We do not know if there exists number of type k for all k. 2. Preliminary We denote σ/2 2 x simply by σ2 x and put c = = By 2 6 = 6 = mod 665, we see 2 k+6j c = 2 k c, k+6j c = k c, and 6 σ 2 c = Vc,c+2 k= j=0 = Vc,c k+6jv 2 k+6j c, k+6j c 6 k= 6 kv 2 k c, k c = By 0 Vx,ξ /4, we can verify 4 2 n=n 6 nv 2 n x, n x 0 6 N. If x > y, then we have Vx,y = y x, V x x,y y < 0, and V y x,y = x > 0. If x < y, then we have Vx,y = x y, V x x,y = y > 0, and V y x,y x < 0. Since one of V x x,y and V y x,y is positive and the other is negative, we see d dx V 2 n x, n x = 2 n V x 2 n x, n x + n V y 2 n x, n x n and 5 2 n=n d 6 n dx V 2 n x, n x 2 N 2 a.e.
A metric discrepancy result for geometric progression with ratio /2 5 We can easily prove V 2 n x, n x = x d 0 dt V 2 n t, n t dt and σ 2 x σ 2 x 0 = x d x 0 dt V t, t + 2 n= d 6 n dt V 2 n t, n t dt. Hence we have d dx σ2 x = d dx V x, x +2 n= d 6 n dx V 2 n x, n x and we can conclude σ 2 d x is increasing in x a,b if dx σ2 x > 0 for a.e. x a,b. Put hx = σ 2 x σ 2 c and η = σ 2 c. Since we have σ 2 x = σ 2 x and σ 2 /2 = /2 Cf. [], it is sufficient to prove hx < 0 for x [0,/2 \ {c}.
