Interfacial behaviors of the backward forward diffusion convection equations arxiv: v1 [math.ap] 6 Dec 018 Lianzhang Bao School of Mathematics, Jilin University, Changchun, Jilin 13001, China, and School of Mathematical Science, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 31007, China (lzbao@jlu.edu.cn) Abstract This paper is devoted to the interfacial behaviors of a class of backward forward diffusion convection equations. Under the assumption that the equations have classical solutions in one dimension, we prove that the backward region shrinks and the forward region expands with a positive rate. Keywords: Backward forward parabolic equations, free boundary problem, degenerate diffusion. 1. Introduction In this paper, we study the interfacial behaviors for a class of one dimensional backward-forward diffusion convection equations of the form: u t = (Φ(u x )) x +Ψ(x,u x ), (x,t) Q T = Ω (0,T), (1) where Ω R is an open bounded domain and T > 0. The diffusion flux function Φ = Φ(s) is assumed to be of a backward-forward type, including the well-known Perona-Malik type [0]. More precisely, we assume that there exist numbers α < β such that: Φ(s) C (R), () Φ (s) > 0, s (α,β), (3) Φ (s) < 0, s (,α) (β,+ ). (4) The non-monotonicity of Φ leads to a backward-forward partial differential equation (1) of parabolic type. A typical example of the backward-forward parabolic equation was considered by Höllig [11]. Similar equations to (1) Preprint submitted to Elsevier December 7, 018
with different types of nonmonotone flux functions Φ can also be found in fluid mechanics [6], image processing [8], [15], [16], [0], and gradient flows associated with nonconvex energy functionals [3],[19]. Mathematical biology also provide many backgrounds to the backwardforward parabolic equations. Anguige et al. [1], Bao and Zhou[5], Horstmann et al. [1], and Turchin [1] all constructed the following backward forward equations: u t = (D(u)u x ) x, (5) where u is the population density, and the diffusion coefficient D(u) have positive and negative values corresponding to different physical interpretations. Backward-forward parabolic equations with low order terms are also wildly studied. Wang et al. [] investigated the properties of the Young measure solutions of the backward-forward convection-diffusion equation. Kim and Yan [17] proved the existence of infinitely many lipschitz weak solutions for the one-dimensional backward-forward parabolic equation of the following form u t = (σ(u x )) x +b(x,t)u x +c(x,t)u+f(x,t), (x,t) Q T = Ω (0,T), (6) where the monotonicity condition (σ(ξ) σ(ζ)) (ξ ζ) 0, (7) is violated for some ξ,ζ R n. Interfacial behavior is a very important property of the backward-forward parabolic equation, especially in image processing that this is related to the movement of the detected edge. In the following, we denote Q + := {(x,t) Q T with u x (α,β)} (8) the forward (subcritical) region of Equation (1), Q := {(x,t) Q T with u x R\[α,β]} (9) the backward (supercritical) region and Q 0 := {(x,t) Q T with u x = α or β} (10) the degenerate region. Note in the degenerate region, Equation (1) is a first order equation.
Classical solutions of (1) without low order terms have extensively been investigated in the last decade. Kawohl and Kutev [13] proved that globalin-time classical solutions exist if the initial conditions are in the forward region and under the framework of the classical solution, they proved the shrinking property of the union of supercritical and degenerate regions as time increasing and the supercritical region exists for all t > 0 under some structural assumptions that the solution exists in one-dimension. Furthermore, Ghisi and Gobbino [9] proved similar results for one dimensional case and expanding property of supercritical regions in high dimensional case. The interfacial behaviors of a special backward-forward diffusion convection equation are also considered in [4]. This paper is organized as follows. In section we first state a result that is related to the interfacial behaviors of the degenerate parabolic equations which will be used in our proof of the main theorem. Second, we state our results for the backward-forward diffusion convection equation and the related interfacial behaviors in one dimension.. Main results Forsimplicity, weassumethatφsatisfiescondition(),(3),(4)withφ (α) > 0,Φ (β) < 0, Ψ(x,y) C 1 (R ) and Ψ x (x,α) = A < 0,Ψ x (x,β) = B < 0. (11) In order to prove our main theorem, we first state a result in [9] for the interfacial behaviors involving degenerate parabolic equations. Lemma.1. Let x 1 x x 3 x 4, and let c 0,c 1,T,K,C be positive real numbers. Let g : (0,c 0 ) (0,+ ) be a continuous function such that g(σ) lim = K. (1) σ 0 + σ Let f : (x 1,x 4 ) (0,T) [ c 1,c 1 ] R be a function such that f(x,t,0,0) = C uniformly in (x,t), namely lim σ 0 +sup{ f(x,t,p,q) : (x,t,p,q) (x 1,x 4 ) (0,T) [ σ,σ] } = C. (13) Let v : (x 1,x 4 ) [0,T) R be a function such that (c1) v is continuous in (x 1,x 4 ) [0,T); 3
(c) v(x,t) 0 for every (x,t) (x 1,x 4 ) [0,T); (c3) v(x,0) > 0 for every x (x,x 3 ); (c4) v x (x,t) exists for every (x,t) (x 1,x 4 ) (0,T); (c5) setting D := {(x,t) (x 1,x 4 ) (0,T) : 0 < v(x,t) < c 0 }, (14) H := {(x,t) (a,b) [0,T) : x k 0 t < x < x 3 +k 0 t} (15) with k 0 = K C, we have that v C,1 (D), and v t g(v){v xx +f(x,t,v,v x )} (x,t) D. (16) Then v(x,t) > 0 for every (x,t) H. The main strategy to prove the theorem is the comparison principle [9]. Because Equation (1) involves only first order derivatives, we state our result as follows. Theorem.. LetΦ C (R) beafunctionsatisfying (),(3),(4) with Φ (α) > 0,Φ (β) < 0 and let Ψ(x,y) satisfy (11). Let a a 1 b 1 b, and T > 0 be a real number. Let u C 1 ((a,b) [0,T)) be a function satisfying (1) in (a,b) [0,T), and α < u x (x,0) < β x (a 1,b 1 ), (17) u x (x,0) < α, x [a,a 1 ), u x (x,0) > β, x (b 1,b]. (18) Let k 0 := A Φ (α),k 1 := B Φ (β), and denote G := {(x,t) (a,b) [0,T) : a 1 k 0 t < x < b 1 +k 1 t}. (19) Then α < u x (x,t) < β for every (x,t) G. Proof. Because Φ is an increasing function on (α, β), we first consider interfacial behaviors at u x = β and then consider the behaviors of the other side. Let us consider any function η C 1 (R) which is nondecreasing and where η(σ) = Φ(σ) for every σ [ α+β,β],η(σ) = Φ(β) for every σ β, η(σ) = Φ( 3α+β ) for σ 3α+β. Then the function η and Φ are invertible 4 4 as a function from ( α+β,β) to (Φ(α+β),Φ(β)). We can therefore define g : (0,Φ(β) Φ( α+β )) R by setting g(σ) := Φ (η 1 (Φ(β) σ)), σ (0,Φ(β) Φ( α+β )), 4
which is a well defined continuous function. Finally we define v(x,t) := Φ(β) η(u x (x,t)), (x,t) (a,b) [0,T). (0) If the constructed functions g and v satisfy conditions in Lemma.1 which meansv(x,t) > 0intheexpendingregion,andthisisequivalenttoη(u x (x,t)) < Φ(β). By the definition of η(σ), we obtain u x (x,t) < β in the region. Properties of g. From the definition of function g, we can see g : (0,Φ(β) Φ( α+β )) (0,+ ) is a continuous function. So we can square both the denominator and numerator, also change variable τ := η 1 (Φ(β) σ), we have [g(σ)] lim σ 0 + σ [Φ (η 1 (Φ(β) σ))] = lim σ 0 + σ Φ (τ)φ (τ) = lim τ β Φ (τ) = lim τ β [Φ (τ)] Φ(β) Φ(τ) = Φ (β) = Φ (β), which proves (1) with K := Φ (β). Properties of the function v. Because η(σ) Φ(β) for every σ R and condition (17), we have that v satisfies (c1),(c),(c3). By using standard interior regularity theory of parabolic equation, we have that u is of class C except at u x (x,t) = α and u x (x,t) = β. So we only need to consider the existence of v x (x,t) at u x (x 0,t 0 ) = β, and the existence of v x (x,t) is trivial when u x (x,t) = α because h(σ) is constant for σ 3α+β. We claim 4 v x (x 0,t 0 ) = 0. Otherwise, there exists a sequence δ k 0 such that v(x 0 +δ k,t 0 ) v(x 0,t 0 ) δ k ν > 0, k N. (1) Byconsideringthesubsequences, wecanalwaysassumethateitheru x (x 0 + δ k,t 0 ) > β or 0 < u x (x 0 +δ k,t 0 ) < β for every k N. If u x (x 0 +δ k,t 0 ) > β, then the left side of Equation (1) is 0, which is a contradiction. In the second case, the right side of Equation (1) can be rewritten as η(u x(x 0 +δ k,t 0 )) η(u x (x 0,t 0 )) = Φ(u x(x 0 +δ k,t 0 )) Φ(u x (x 0,t 0 )). δ k δ k () Whenδ k 0, Equation()tendsto(Φ (u x )) x (x 0,t 0 )whichis0, becausethe functionφ(u x (x,t 0 ))attainsitsmaximumatx = x 0.Whichisacontradiction to (1). 5
In order to prove condition (c5), we need to consider similar set defined as D in (14). By using standard interior regularity theory of parabolic equation, we can see v is regular and satisfies v t = η (u x )u xt = Φ (u x )[(Φ(u x )) x +Ψ(x,u x )] x. (3) Let Ψ(x,u x ) = Ψ(x,η 1 (Φ(β) v))) := G(x,v) with Φ (u x ) = Φ (η 1 (Φ(β) v)) = g(v) and [(Φ(u x )) x +G ( x,v)] x = (Φ(u x )) xx +G x (x,v)+g v (x,v)v x. (4) Plugging these terms into (3), we obtain: v t = g(v){v xx G x (x,v) G v (x,v)v x }. (5) By using Lemma.1, we have lim +[G (v,vx) 0 x(x,v) + G v (x,v)v x ] = B, and concludethatthesubcriticalregionexpandswiththeratek 1 = B Φ (β). We can prove the interfacial behavior for u x = α in a similar way. Let η 1 C 1 (R) be any nondecreasing smooth function where η 1 (σ) = Φ(σ) for every σ [α, α+β ],η 1(σ) = Φ(α) for every σ α, η 1 (σ) = Φ( α+3β ) for σ 4 α+3β. Then the function η 4 1 and Φ are invertible as a function from (α, α+β ) to (Φ(α),Φ( α+β )). We can therefore define g 1 : (0,Φ( α+β ) Φ(α)) R by setting g 1 (σ) := Φ (η 1 1 (Φ(α)+σ)), σ (0,Φ(α+β) Φ(α)), which is a well defined continuous function. Finally we define v 1 (x,t) := η 1 (u x (x,t)) Φ(α), (x,t) (a,b) [0,T). (6) Similar to the properties of g and v as in the u x = β side, we can obtain the following: [g 1 (σ)] lim σ 0 σ [Φ (η1 1 (Φ(α)+σ))] [Φ (τ)] = lim = lim σ 0 σ τ α + Φ(τ) Φ(α) Φ (τ)φ (τ) = lim = Φ (α), τ α + Φ (τ) which proves (1) with K := Φ (α). The function v 1 is regular and satisfies v 1 t = η 1 (u x)u xt = Φ (u x )[(Φ(u x )) x +Ψ(x,u x )] x. (7) 6
LetΨ(x,u x ) = Ψ(x,η 1 1 (Φ(α)+v))) := G 1 (x,v)withφ (u x ) = Φ (η 1 1 (Φ (α)+ v)) = g 1 (v) and [(Φ(u x )) x +G 1 (x,v)] x = (Φ(u x )) xx +G 1 x (x,v)+g1 v (x,v)v x. (8) Plugging these terms into (3), we obtain: v 1 t = g 1(v){v 1 xx +G1 x (x,v)+g1 v (x,v)v x}. (9) By using Lemma.1 again, we have lim (v,vx) 0 +[G1 x (x,v) + G1 v (x,v)v x] = A, and conclude that the subcritical region expands with the rate k 1 = A Φ (α). From the above results, we obtain the result that the subcritical region expands with lower bound positive rates which are depending on the function values at the vanishing point u x = α and u x = β. Remark.3. When we consider the time behaviors of the supercritical region, by the time reverse we can change the supercritical region to the subcritical region and the lower bound expending rate is obtained as above which mean the supercritical region shrinking with a positive rate. The exact expending rate of subcritical region and shrinking rate of supercritical region may be different, which create a possibility that the emergence of a positive measured connected degenerate region from one point x 0 such that u x (x 0,0) = α or u x (x 1,0) = β as time increasing.
