A functional relation for L-function of graph equivalent to the Riemann Hypothei for Dirichlet L-function arxiv: v [math.nt] 8 Jan 206 Fabien Friedli September 9, 208 Abtract In thi note we define L-function of finite graph and tudy the particular cae of finite cycle in the pirit of a previou paper that tudied pectral zeta function of graph. The main reult i a uggetive equivalence between an aymptotic functional equation for thee L-function and the correponding cae of the Generalized Riemann Hypothei. We alo etablih a relation between the poitivity of uch function and the exitence of real zero in the critical trip of the claical Dirichlet L-function with the ame character. Introduction In a previou paper with Karlon ([6]), we initiated the tudy of pectral zeta function of graph. In particular, we tudied the behaviour of the zeta function of the cyclic graph with n vertice a the parameter n goe to infinity. It turned out that the claical Riemann zeta function (or Eptein zeta function in more than one dimenion) appeared in the aymptotic, together with the pectral zeta function of the graph Z. Thi lead to a urpriing reformulation of the Riemann Hypothei in term of an aymptotic functional equation for pectral zeta function. It i natural to wonder whether thi could be generalized to L-function. In thi work, we propoe a definition of L-function for finite graph different from thoe in Stark-Terra [0]. Given a finite graph G with m 3vertice and a primitive character modulo k 3 one can define a (pectral) L-function of G by L G (,χ) = m j= λ, j where the um run over all non-zero ordered eigenvalue of the combinatorial Laplacian on G and i any complex number, in analogy with the definition of pectral zeta function in [6]. For our purpoe here we normalize thing a bit differently in the cae of the Cayley graph of Z/knZ and a character modulo k. The author wa upported in part by the Swi NSF grant /.
Definition. Let k 3 and let χ be a primitive and even (χ( )=) Dirichlet character modulo k. For n, the function L n C C defined by L n (,χ) = kn j= in( πj kn ) i the (normalized) L-function of the cyclic graph with kn vertice Z/knZ aociated to the character χ. In contrat to [6], it i not clear to u how to define appropriate L-function for infinite graph. Denote by L(, χ) the claical Dirichlet L-function aociated to the character χ, which i defined by L(,χ)= j j when Re() > 0 and by analytic continuation elewhere. We will prove in ection 2 the following aymptotic: Propoition.2 For any C we have, a n, L n (,χ)=2( kn π ) (L(,χ)+ 6 (kn π ) 2L( 2,χ)+O( n 4)). Thi lead u into an intereting reformulation of the Generalized Riemann Hypothei (GRH) (reminicent to Riemann cae in [6], although there one alo ha a ζ Z term). Theorem.3 Let χ be a primitive and even Dirichlet character modulo k 3. For 0<Re()<, let ξ n (,χ)=n ( π k ) 2 Γ( 2 )L n(,χ) be the (normalized) completed L-function of Z/knZ. The following are equivalent: (i) For all uch that 0<Re()< and Im() 8 we have lim n ξ n (,χ) ξ n (,χ) =; (ii) In the region Im() 8, L(, χ) atifie the Generalized Riemann Hypothei (GRH), that i all zero in thi region have real part 2. We will ee in the proof that the relation in (i) hold in any cae for all uch that L(,χ) 0 and for obviou reaon on the critical line Re()= 2 for each n. For comparion, recall that if we let ξ(,χ)=( π k ) 2 Γ( 2 )L(,χ) then the functional equation implie that ξ(, χ) = ξ(, χ). In view of Propoition.2 there i a more obviou way to relate propertie of our L-function of cyclic graph to GRH. Indeed, ince the holomorphic function 2 ( π kn ) L n (,χ) converge to the correponding Dirichlet L-function, it would be 2
poible to tudy zero of thee finite um to get information about zero of L (for example uing Hurwitz theorem). Alo we ee that the rate of convergence of the equence L n change according to whether L(,χ)=0or not. Nerverthele we believe the reult given in Theorem.3 i more unexpected and tructural, in that it unveil a relationhip between zero of L and an aymptotic functional equation for L n of the uual type. A weaker (additive) verion of the latter hold unconditionally by Propoition.2, but the remarkable thing i that a trengthening of thi property i ruled by GRH. Acknowledgement. The author gratefully thank Ander Karlon for ueful dicuion, comment and correction to thi paper. Thi work wa alo partly inpired by a quetion raied by Françoi Ledrappier following a lecture about [6]. 2 Aymptotic of L n (,χ) In thi ection we derive an aymptotic formula for L n (,χ) when the parameter n. Proof of Propoition.2 The proof i baed on an Euler-MacLaurin formula etablihed in [9]. Indeed, let 0<Re()< and apply Theorem 2. in [9] to the function f(x) = (in(πx)), with a=0 and b= to get (for any 0<θ<) n n j=0 (in( π n (j+θ)))= 0 (in(πx)) dx+π (ζ(,θ)+ζ(, θ)) n +π 2 6 (ζ( 2,θ)+ζ( 2, θ)) n 3 +O( n 5 ), ince near 0 we have f(x)=x (π + 6 π2 x 2 +O(x 4 )). Here ζ(,θ) denote the Hurwitz zeta function. Now we notice that L n (,χ)= k r= n χ(r) j=0 in( π n (j+ r k )) uing periodicity of character. The following identity i well-known: L(,χ)= k k χ(m)ζ(, m/k), (2.) m= with χ a before and. Putting everything together, we obtain L n (,χ)=( n k π ) χ(r)(ζ(,r/k)+ζ(, r/k)) r= +( n 2 k π ) 6 r= χ(r)(ζ( 2,r/k)+ζ( 2, r/k))+o(n 4 ) =2( n k π ) χ(r)ζ(,r/k)+2( n 2 k r= π ) 6 r= χ(r)ζ( 2,r/k)+O(n 4 ), 3
where we ued the fact that k r= χ(r)ζ(, r k k )= χ(k r)ζ(, k r r= k k )= χ(r)ζ(, r k ). Now we can apply (2.) and conclude by analytic continuation. r= Remark 2. We can obtain a many term a we want in the propoition by looking further in the aymptotic of f near 0. 3 Relation with GRH A natural quetion to ak i whether there i a kind of functional equation for L n. Indeed, Propoition.2 trivially implie lim n (ξ n (,χ) ξ n (,χ))=0. But [6] ugget looking for a tronger verion and an equivalence to GRH. Thi i the content of Theorem.3 which we now begin to prove. In what follow, we write G(χ)= k l=0 χ(l)e2πil k for the Gau um of χ. Recall that L(,χ) atifie a functional equation: write ξ(,χ)=( π k ) 2 Γ( 2 )L(,χ) for the completed L-function. Then (ee [3]), ξ(,χ)= G(χ) k ξ(,χ). We begin the proof with the following lemma which concern only Dirichlet L- function. Lemma 3. Let t R be fixed with t 8 and write =σ+it. Then the function i trictly increaing in 0<σ<. L(+2,χ) L( 2,χ) Proof The proof relie on a recent paper by Matiyaevich, Saidak and Zvengrowki ([7]). By Lemma 2. in that paper, it i enough to prove that the real part of the logarithmic derivative of L(+2,χ) L( 2,χ) i poitive for all a in the tatement of the lemma. Thu we are done if we how that Re( L ( 2,χ) L( 2,χ) )> Re( L (+2,χ) L(+2,χ) ). The right-hand ide i eay to etimate. Indeed, ince Re(+2)> we have Re( L (+2,χ) L(+2,χ) ) Λ(n)χ(n) = Re( n n +2 ) n Λ(n)χ(n) n +2 n Λ(n) n σ+2 Λ(n) n n 2 = ζ (2) ζ(2) <
For the left-hand ide we firt ue the definition of ξ to ee that Re( ξ ( 2,χ) ξ( 2,χ) )= 2 log(k π )+ 2 Re(ψ( 2 2 ))+Re(L ( 2,χ) L( 2,χ) ), where ψ(z) = Γ (z) Γ(z) i the logarithmic derivative of Γ. Since 0<σ< we have Re( ξ ( 2,χ) ξ( 2,χ) )<0, a i hown in [7] uing the Hadamard product. Thu, Re( L ( 2,χ) L( 2,χ) )> 2 log(k π )+ 2 Re(ψ( 2 2 )) > 2 Re(ψ( 2 2 )) 0.03 >0.57, where we ued k 3 in the econd inequality and Lemma 3.2 (v) of [7] (with our hypothei that t 8) in the lat one. We now proceed to prove the equivalence tated in Theorem.3. Proof of Theorem.3 By Propoition.2 we have ξ n (,χ)=2( π k ) 2 Γ( 2 ) L(,χ)+ 6 (kn π ) 2L( 2,χ)+O( n 4) =2ξ(,χ)+α(,χ) n 2+O( n4), (3.) where we denote α(,χ) = 3 (π k )2 2Γ( 2 )L( 2,χ). SinceG(χ) ha modulu k, the functional equation forξ together with (3.) implie that part (i) of the theorem i true for any which i not a zero of L. We want to know when it i true alo for other value of, namely thoe correponding to zero of L. For thi we oberve that α(,χ) = 3 (π k ) 2 ( )(+) = 2 and o the identity 2 Γ( 2 )L(,χ) 3 = 3 (π k ) Γ( 2 )ξ(,χ)(π k ) 2 Γ( 2 ) +2 ( )(+) π = 6 k Γ(+2 2 )L(+2,χ)(π k ) 2 ( π k ) 2 Γ( 2 )L(+2,χ) α(,χ) = α(,χ) (3.2) 5
i equivalent to the following: L(+2,χ) 4π 2 = L( 2,χ) k 2 2. (3.3) We note that identitie (3.2) and (3.3) are true when Re()= 2, becaue α( (/2+it),χ)=α(/2+it,χ)=α(/2+it,χ). Clearly, the right-hand ide of (3.3) i trictly decreaing in 0<σ<. By Lemma 3. the left-hand ide i trictly increaing in 0<σ< provided Im() 8. Thu, (3.3) can be true for only one value of σ and thi i σ= 2. Thi finihe the proof of Theorem.3, ince when i a zero of L, the aertion lim n ξ n (,χ) ξ n (,χ) = i equivalent to (3.2). 4 On real zero of L(,χ) It i an important and difficult problem to how that Dirichlet L-function have no real zero. Even partial anwer to thi quetion have many conequence, in particular in the theory of prime in arithmetic progreion and in the theory of quadratic form and cla number initiated by Gau. Particular cae uch a the non-vanihing of L( 2,χ) or the exitence of a Siegel zero are much tudied and till open in general. Conider χ a primitive, even and real character modulo k 3 (if k i odd thi i the Jacobi ymbol modulo k). It i intereting to oberve that if we uppoe that 0<< i a real zero of the aociated Dirichlet L-function then Propoition.2 tell u that L n (,χ)<0for all n ufficiently large, ince L(,χ) i negative for 2<<0. Thu the poible exitence of real zero of L(,χ) i encoded in the L-function of a very imple graph. Corollary 4. Let χ be a primitive, even and real character modulo k 3 and let 0 < <. The following are equivalent: (i) L(,χ)>0; (ii) For infinitely many n we have L n (,χ) 0, that i kn j= in( πj kn ) 0. intead, ee [4]. We refer to [6] for a heuritic explanation a to why thee partial um with ine, although being eemingly more involved, may be an intereting alternative to the uual partial um in the tudy of Dirichlet L-function. A imilar reult i avalaible if we conider the tandard partial um kn j= j 6
Now we would like to mention an intereting problem related to the tudy of the ign of L n and ay a few word about it analog in the claical cae. The problem come from the following imple obervation: if we write for 0<<, we ee that kn j= It i then natural to ak: ( x) = a m ()x m m 0 in( πj kn )= a m (/2) m kn co 2m ( πj j= kn ). Quetion Let χ be a primitive, even and real character modulo k 3. Doe there exit a equence(a n ) of poitive integer uch that for every m? ka n co 2m ( πj ) 0 (4.) j= ka n Note that thi claim i independent of. Since a m (/2)>0 for all 0<< and m, a poitive anwer to Quetion would imply that L(,χ) ha no real zero. Obviouly it i a much tronger tatement but it i not clear to u whether it i true or not and we think it i an intereting problem to invetigate. It may be a good idea to draw a comparion with the claical cae, that i when we conider the ign of the partial umj= kn j. We already mentioned the paper [4] where it i hown that it i enough to etablih that k j= j i poitive in order to prove that there i no real zero. We can make the ame computation a above: k k j=( j k )= a m () ( j m m 0 j= k ) = m 0 k a m () where we ued the fact that χ i even in the lat equality. Thu if S(m,χ) = k j m j= j= ( j k ) m, wa non-negative for all m 0 (it i well-known that S(0,χ)=S(,χ)=0) it would imply that L(,χ) ha no real zero. Thi wa already oberved by Roer in [8]. The analog to Quetion i then: Quetion 2 Let χ be a primitive, even and real character modulo k 3. I it true that S(m,χ) 0 for every m? 7
It i poible to how that S(m,χ)>0 if m k 2, imply by howing that the term with j=k dominate the ret of the um. Thu if we are given a character only a finite number of um need to be checked in order to anwer Quetion 2. On the other hand, there i a nice formula available for S(m,χ), probably well-known, which we prove now. Propoition 4.2 Let χ be a primitive, even and real character modulo k 3. For any n and m 2 we have kn (kn) m j= j m =2n [ m 2 ] ( ) j+ m(m )...(m 2j+2) k j= (4π 2 n 2 ) j L(2j,χ). (4.2) Thi can be thought of a a kind of Faulhaber formula twited by a Dirichlet character. Proof We ue once again Euler-MacLaurin formula (ee for example []): kn ( j m j= kn ) = k r= n χ(r) j=0 ( n (j+ r k )) m k = r=χ(r) m n m+ + ( ) j+ ζ( j, r k ) j= (j )!n j m(m )...(m j+2) [ m 2 ] = j= m(m )...(m 2j+2) (2j )!(kn) 2j L( 2j,χ), where in the lat equality we ued (2.) and the fact that L( 2m,χ)=0 for m 0 when χ i even. We obtain (4.2) by applying the functional equation. Corollary 4.3 Let χ be a primitive, even and real character modulo k 3. For m=2,3,4,5,6,7 we have S(m,χ)>0. Proof Apply (4.2) with n= and m=2,3,4,5,6 or 7 and ue the bound ζ(2) ζ() L(,χ) ζ(), valid for all > and all real character. With a more delicate analyi it i in principle poible to extend Corollary 4.3 to greater value of m but it become more and more difficult a m grow. To our knowledge, no example of a character χ a in the corollary and an integer m uch that S(m, χ) < 0 ha been found. The ame problem for an odd character ha received much more attention, tarting with a paper by Chowla, Ayoub and Walum ([]) where they how that the ign of S(3,χ) change infinitely often when χ varie. See [5] for a tronger reult 8
and [2] for ubequent work on thi problem. Thee kind of um alo appear in [2]. Of coure, it make no ene in our ituation to conider odd character ince L n (,χ) 0in that cae. We believe that the tudy of the ign of both um S(m,χ) for even χ and (4.) are worthy problem and we hope thi note will timulate work on thi topic. Reference [] R. Ayoub, S. Chowla, and H. Walum.
