1 Brewster.tex Geometric visualizatio of the Brewster agle from dielectric magetic iterface Ari Sihvola Helsiki Uiversity of Techology, Electromagetics Laboratory P.O. Box 3000, Espoo, FIN-0205, Filad (Dated: July 9, 208) arxiv:physics/050326v [physics.pop-ph] 29 Mar 2005 A geometric visualizatio is preseted for the Brewster agle for a plae wave reflectig from a iterface. The surface is assumed isotropic but it is allowed to display both dielectric ad magetic susceptibility, ad hece the Brewster (polarizig) agle ca attai ay value betwee 0 ad 90 degrees, ad ca exist for both parallel ad perpedicular polarizatios. The geometric costructio (a tetrahedro) is spaed by the basic material parameters of the surface. The Brewster agle appears i oe of the faces of the tetrahedro. PACS umbers: 4.20.Jb, Gy, Ja I. INTRODUCTION Very much physics is sometimes cotaied i simple ad basic results of optics ad electromagetics. I this paper I shall focus o the character of electromagetic waves reflected from a plaar surface. As is well kow, may everyday light pheomea that we ca observe with plai eyes [] ca be justified ad explaied with basic wave theory which is is beig taught to freshme i physics ad egieerig schools. As examples i optics we could metio the glare o road surfaces o a suy day which ca be reduced by use of Polaroid su glasses, orthewaytheimagesreflectedfromawatersurfacediffer from those that are direcly observed. The polarizatio state of light chages i refrectio ad refractio processes. Sice our eyes are ot capable of sesig polarizatio, ad atural light very ofte is rather upolarized, the subtleties of the outdoor images, asthey appearto us, mayoly be preset i veryidirect ways. But oe especially iterestig pheomeo i this respect is the possibility of light to become fully polarized i reflectio. This happes whe light impiges o a surface i a certai directio, from the Brewster agle. I the followig, let us cocetrate o the depedece of Brewster agle o the fudametal material parameters. I particular, the emphasis shall be o the way how the Brewster agle ca be visualized i a geometrical way which cotais pedagogical ad physical isight. I the followig, the materials to be aalyzed are assumed isotropic ad lossless. However, i oe respect the aalysis is more geeral tha that ecoutered i basic textbooks i optics which ofte restrict the treatmet to o-magetic media: here also magetic permeability is take as a material parameter that ca vary. Presetly i may egieerig applicatios, composite materials research, ad aotechology, great iterest is i the magetic properties of matter, which gives motivatio to al- Electroic address: ari.sihvola@tkk.fi URL: low magetic cotrasts i the studies of caoical problems. Hece, if both electric ad magetic resposes are preset, the material from which the wave reflects is characterized by two parameters, the relative permittivity ad permeability ǫ ad µ. These are assumed i the preset paper to be real ad positive []. But to ease the aalysis, istead of usig these parameters, it appears more coveiet to apply the refractive idex ad relative impedace of the material: = ǫµ, = µ/ǫ () Obviously the iverse relatios are ǫ = / ad µ =. The followig sectios give the reflectio coefficiets from such a material ad a way to visualize them. II. REFLECTION COEFFICIENTS The geometry of the problem to be aalyzed is very simple ad show i Figure. A icidet electromageticwaveisimpigigfromfreespaceadfacesaplaar iterface. O the other side of the boudary, there is a homogeeous half space of dielectric magetic medium with refractive idex ad impedace parameters ad. After the collisio with the boudary, part of the eergy is refracted ad peetrates ito the medium, ad the remaiig part reflects away form the iterface. I geeral, the wave chages its polarizatio state i reflectio. Oly for two eigepolarizatios of the icidet wave do the reflected ad refracted waves remai with the same polarizatio as the icomig wave. These two are parallel (P) ad perpedicular (S) polarizatios, meaig that the liearly polarized electric field vector is i the plae of icidece (P) or perpedicular to it (S). The plae of icidece is spaed by the icidet wave directio ad the ormal of the iterface (the plae of paper i Figure ). The reflectio coefficiets for the two polarizatios ca be writte i may equivalet forms [2, 3]; the followig
2 2 θ θ Parallel polarizatio: > ad <, or < ad > Perpedicular polarizatio: > ad >, or < ad <, g replacemets θ 2 P S FIG. : Plae wave hittig a boudary betwee free space ad a dielectric magetic material with refractive idex ad impedace. PSfrag replacemets electric field Fresel coefficiets are quite symmetric: R P = cosθ 2 cosθ cosθ 2 +cosθ (2) R S = cosθ cosθ 2 cosθ +cosθ 2 (3) I usig these formulas, the value for the refractio agle θ 2 is eeded. It is determied by the Sell s law siθ = siθ 2 (4) These expressios give the reflected electric field vector for uit icidet field. The magitudes of the reflectio coefficiets are always betwee zero ad uity. Note, however, that the reflectio coefficiets ca attai complex valueseve i the caseofrealvaluesforad ; this happes for total iteral reflectio with the associated Goos Häche pheomeo. Of course, very iterestig is the case whe the reflectio vaishes. It is easy to solve from (2) (4) the icidece agle for which the reflectio coefficiet is zero. This is called the Brewster agle, ad it is for the parallel polarizatio ( ) θ Br,P = arcsi (5) For the perpedicular polarizatio the Brewster agle ca be writte as ( ) θ Br,S = arcsi (6) Note that oly for oe polarizatio there exists a Brewster agle; the requiremets are (see Figure 2) S FIG. 2: Regios of the (-)-plae where the Brewster agle ca be observed for parallel ad perpedicular polarizatios. Note that the expressio (5) is a geeralizatio from the familiar Brewster-agle relatio taθ Br,P = which is valid for o-magetic media ( = /), ad aturally oly exists for the parallel polarizatio. Whe magetic respose is allowed, the relatio for the polarizig agle has oe more degree of freedom. It ca be writte, of course, also i forms other tha (5) (6), see, for example [4]. A iterestig observatio is that the Brewster agle ca attai ay values betwee zero ad 90, as ca be see from Figure 3 i case of parallel polarizatio. Note that for ordiary dielectric materials where = / the Brewster agle θ Br = arcta() is larger tha 45. For the parallel polarizatio, the impedace as fuctio of the refractive idex ad the Brewster agle is = P cosθ Br 2 si 2 θ Br (7) The simple law for the o-magetic Brewster agle taθ =, combied with the Sell s law siθ = siθ 2 yields cosθ = siθ 2. This meas that the icidece ad refracted agles are complemetary agles (θ + θ 2 = 90 ). Therefore (see Figure ) the directio of the reflected wave is orthogoal to the refracted wave. I such a geometric costellatio the dipoles iduced i the medium by the refracted ray, which have a radiatio ull alog their axis directio, do ot cause reradiatio
3 Η 7Π 6 3Π 8 Π 4 Π 8 Η FIG. 3: Equi-Brewster-agle curves i the (-) -plae for parallel polarizatio. Four curves are show. The thick curve = / divides the plae ito a upper paramagetic part where µ >, ad the lower diamagetic part where µ <. of the Pythagorea theorem. Ad ideed, after some time of trigoometric play with these relatios, beautiful geometric iterpretatios ca be discovered from right triagles that are built from the three basic measures,, ad. Further, a arragemet of these triagles i three dimesios reveals structures with which the Brewster agles ca be grasped i a very visual sese. This geometric costructio is illustrated i Figure 4 for the relatios expressig the Brewster agle for parallel polarizatio. From the magitudes of ad, a tetrahedro is uiquely determied. The faces of this geometrical object are four right triagles. The Brewster agle ca be read from the bottom of the tetdahedro. Figure 5 shows the same for the perpedicular polarizatio. ito the directio of the reflected ray. Hece physical ituitio agrees with the result of Brewster agle formula [5, 6], although the iterpretatio has bee also criticized [7, 8]. But let us retur to the more geeral case of the properties of the wave that reflects from a dielectric magetic iterface. III. GEOMETRIC INTERPRETATION The square roots of differeces of squares i the relatios (5) ad (6) for the two Brewster agles remid IV. CONCLUSION Sir David Brewster performed his studies o the character of reflected light durig the secod decade of the 9th cetury. Therefore the cocept of polarizig agle is early as old as the uderstadig of the trasverse ature of light. The fasciatig maer how the material properties affect the appearace of the Brewster agle is very iterestig still today, both from experimetal applicatio poit of view ad also pedagogically whe we are learig physics, optics, ad electromagetism. Hopefully the preset article ca give a helpful cotributio to a moder uderstadig of the Brewster agle. [] M. G. J. Miaert, Light ad Color i the Outdoors (Spriger-Verlag, 993). [2] J. D. I recet years very much research has bee ad is still beig focused o materials with egative permittivity ad permeability values, so-called egative-phasevelocity media, left-haded media, or metamaterials [9, 0].
