We prove ha for every funcion f : X Y, where X i a eparable Banach pace and Y i a Banach pace wih RNP, here exi a e A à uch ha f i Gâeaux differeniable a all x S(f) \ A, where S(f) i he e of poin where f i poinwie-lipchiz. Thi improve a reul of Bongiorno. A a corollary, we obain ha every K-monoone funcion on a eparable Banach pace i Hadamard differeniable ouide of a e belonging o C; hi improve a reul due o Borwein and Wang. Anoher corollary i ha if X i Aplund, f : X R cone monoone, g : X R coninuou convex, hen here exi a poin in X, where f i Hadamard differeniable and g i Fréche differeniable. 1. Inroducion The claical Rademacher heorem [9] concerning a.e. differeniabiliy of Lipchiz funcion defined on R n wa exended by Sepanoff o poinwie Lipchiz funcion [10, 11]. D. Bongiorno [2, Theorem 1] proved a verion for infinie-dimenional mapping; namely, ha for every f : X Y, where X i a eparable Banach pace and Y i a Banach pace wih RNP, here exi an Aronzajn null e A X (ee e.g. [1] for he definiion of Aronzajn null e) uch ha f i Gâeaux differeniable a all x S(f) \ A (here, S(f) i he e of poin where f i poinwie-lipchiz). Thi generalized reul for Lipchiz funcion obained by Aronzajn, Chrienen, Mankiewicz, and Phelp; ee e.g. [1] for he definiion of variou noion of null e hey ued. We prove a ronger verion of infinie dimenional Sepanoff-like heorem, which aer ha under he ame aumpion a in [2, Theorem 1], he e A can be aken in he cla à defined by Prei and Zajíček [8]; ee Theorem 10. By reul of [8], à i a ric ubcla of Aronzajn null e. Recenly, Zajíček [12] proved ha he e in à (and even C) are Γ-null, which i a noion of null e due o Lindenrau and Prei [7] (here, a definiion and baic properie of hi noion can be found). Thu, Theorem 10 ha he following corollary: if X i a Banach pace wih eparable dual (i.e. an Aplund pace), and Y i a Banach pace wih RNP, f : X Y i poinwie-lipchiz a all x X \ A where A C, g : X R i coninuou convex, hen here exi x X uch ha f i Gâeaux differeniable a x and g i Fréche differeniable a x. In ome ene, our proof of Theorem 10 i impler han he proof of [2, Theorem 1]; ome of he (raher cumberome) meaurabiliy conideraion from [2] are replaced by Lemma 6 and he conrucion of Dae: July 26, Mahemaic Subjec Claificaion. Primary 46G05; Secondary 46T20. Key word and phrae. Gâeaux differeniable funcion, Radon-Nikodým propery, differeniabiliy of Lipchiz funcion, poinwie-lipchiz funcion, cone mononoone funcion. The auhor wa uppored in par by ISF. 1
2 2 JAKUB DUDA a oal e from [2] i replaced by he Lipchiz propery of cerain rericion of he given mapping. In he proof, we ue everal idea from [8]. Le X be a Banach pace and K X be a cone. Following [3], we ay ha f : X R i K-monoone provided f or f i K-increaing (we ay ha f : X R i K-increaing provided x K y implie f(x) f(y) whenever x, y X; here, x K y mean y x K). Borwein, Burke and Lewi [3] proved ha every K- monoone f : X R i Gâeaux differeniable ouide of a Haar null e (ee [1] for definiion) provided X i eparable and K i cloed convex wih in(k). Thi wa renghened by Borwein and Wang [4] who howed ha Haar null can be replaced by Aronzajn null. In ecion 5, a a corollary o Theorem 10, we obain ha an analogou reul hold if we replace Haar null by he cla C defined by Prei and Zajíček [8]; ee Theorem 15 for deail. The cla C i a ric ubcla of Aronzajn null e (ee [8, p. 19]) and hu our reul improve he reul due o Borwein and Wang. [4, Propoiion 16(iv)] how ha inead of Gâeaux differeniable we can wrie Hadamard differeniable (ee Corollary 17). Our reul ha anoher inereing corollary; namely, if X ha a eparable dual (i.e. X i an Aplund pace), f : X R i K-monoone, g : X R i coninuou convex, hen here exi x X uch ha f i Hadamard differeniable a x, and g i Fréche differeniable a x (ee Corollary 18). Thi doe no follow from he reul of Borwein and Wang ince Aronzajn null e and Γ-null e are incomparable. I eem o be a difficul open problem wheher C = à (ee [8]). If hi were rue, hen our heorem would alo hold wih à in place of C. Thu, i remain open, wheher we can replace C by à in Theorem 15 and Corollary 17. Going in anoher direcion, he auhor [6] proved ome reul abou a.e. differeniabiliy of vecor-valued cone monoone mapping. The curren paper i organized a follow. Secion 2 conain baic definiion and fac. By B(x, r) we will denoe he open ball wih cener x X and radiu r > 0, and by S X we denoe {x X : x = 1}. If M X, hen by d M (x) := inf{ y x : y M} we denoe he diance from x X o M. Le X, Y be Banach pace. We ay ha f : X Y i poinwie Lipchiz a <. By S(f), we will denoe he e of poin of X where f i poinwie Lipchiz. By Lip(f) we will denoe he uual Lipchiz conan of f. In he following, le X be a Banach pace. If f i Gâeaux differeniable a x, and he limi in (1) i uniform wih repec o norm-compac e, hen we ay ha f i Hadamard differeniable a x. We will need he following noion of mallne of e in Banach pace from [8]. Definiion 1. Le X be a Banach pace, M X, a X. Then we ay ha (i) M i porou a a if here exi c > 0 uch ha for each ε > 0 here exi b X and r > 0 uch ha a b < ε, M B(b, r) =, and r > c a b. (ii) M i porou a a in direcion v if he b X from (i) verifying he poroiy of M a a can be alway found in he form b = a + v, where 0. We ay ha M i direcionally porou a a if here exi v X uch ha M i porou a a in direcion v. (iii) M i direcionally porou if M i direcionally porou a each of i poin. (iv) M i σ-direcionally porou if i i a counable union of direcionally porou e. For a recen urvey of properie of negligible e, ee [13]. We will alo need he following noion of null e in a Banach pace. I wa defined in [8]. Definiion 2. Le X be a eparable Banach pace and 0 v X. Then Ã(v, ε) i he yem of all Borel e B X uch ha { : ϕ() B} i Lebegue null whenever ϕ : R X i uch ha he funcion ϕ() v ha Lipchiz conan a mo ε, and Ã(v) i he yem of all e B uch ha B = k=1 B k, where B k Ã(v, ε k) for ome ε k > 0. We define à (rep. C) a he yem of hoe B X ha can be, for every given complee 1 equence (v n ) n in X (rep. for ome equence (v n ) n in X), wrien a B = n=1 B n, where each B n belong o Ã(v n). The following imple lemma how ha every direcionally porou e i conained in a e from Ã. A a corollary, we have he ame reul for σ-direcionally porou e. Lemma 3. Le x A(k, l, m, y, z). Chooe 0 < < 1/k uch ha he inequaliy in (iii) hold. We claim ha B ( x + v 1, m) A(k, l, m, y, z) =. Indeed, for h < 1 m, if x + (v 1 + h) aifie (ii), we have (2) f(x + (v 1 + h) + u) f(x + (v 1 + h)) for u v 2 < 1 m. By (i) we ge (3) f(x + (v 1 + h)) f(x) y < 1 l. z < 1 l, By he riangle inequaliy, (2), and (3) we ge f(x + (v 1 + h) + u) f(x) (y + z) < 2 l, for u v 2 < 1 m. Taking u = v 2 h, we have f(x + v 1 + v 2 ) f(x) (y + z) < 2 l. Thi choice conradic he choice of. Suppoe ha X, Y are Banach pace, f : X Y. For x X, 0 v X, and ε > 0 by O(f, x, v, ε) we denoe he expreion { f(x + v) f(x) f(x + v) f(x) up }. : 0 <, < ε We alo define O(f, x, v) := lim O(f, x, v, ε). ε 0+ We borrow hi definiion from [8]. Le x X be uch ha x = 1 and β x x (x) for ome 0 < β < 1.
