Prme number decomposton of the Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor arxv: v1 [mathnt] 8 Oct 2014 Abstract LJ Holleboom 1 Department of Mathematcs and Computer Scence Karlstad Unversty Unverstetsgatan Karlstad Sweden The dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor s a multplcatve functon, f taken wth respect to the same order of the prmtve root of unty, whch s a well known fact As such, the transform can be expressed n the prme factors of the argument, the explct form of whch s proven n ths paper Subsequently t s shown how the procedure can be generalzed to the dscrete Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor From ths representaton some nterestng relatons concernng the Euler totent functon and generalzatons thereof are establshed Keywords: Dscrete Fourer Transform, gcd, prme number decomposton, multplcatve functon 1 Introducton The dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor, gcd, s commonly defned as [1] h m (n) = gcd(k,n)e n m (1) The functon h m (n) s multplcatve n the argument n for fxed m [1, 2] Also, h m (n) s nteger valued Ths follows from the fact that h m (n) can be wrtten as the Drchlet convoluton of the dentty functon and the Ramanujan sum, as proven n [1], and that the Ramanujan sum tself s nteger, as proven n [3] We come back to ths later, see equaton 26 below Although the multplcatvty of h m (n) already s establshed, as descrbed above, we outlne a drect proof below because ths property s central n the current work Hence the followng proposton s formulated 1 Correspondng author, emal: thjshollebooom@kause Preprnt submtted to arxv October 9, 2014
Proposton 1 The dscrete Fourer transform h m (n) defned n equaton 1 s a multplcatve functon n the argument n for a fxed value of the ndex m Sketch of proof of proposton 1 Assume two nteger numbers u, and v, that are coprme, e, gcd(u,v) = 1, as requred by the property of multplcatvty, then h m (u)h m (v) = = = u v gcd(k,u)e m2π u k gcd(l,v)e m2π v l (2) u v l=1 uv a=1 l=1 gcd(kv +lu,uv)e m2π uv (kv+lu) (3) gcd(a,uv)e m2π uv a (4) = h m (uv) (5) Here equaton 3 follows from equaton 2 because of elementary propertes of the greatest common dvsor: gcd(k,u) = gcd(kv,u) = gcd(kv +lu,u), and smlarly gcd(l,v) = gcd(kv +lu,v), where the summaton ndces k, and l are lmted to the ranges n ther respectve summaton Subsequently, the multplcatvty of the greatest common dvsor tself, gcd(kv+lu,u)gcd(kv+lu,v) = gcd(kv+lu,uv) was used Furthermore, equaton 4 follows from equaton 3 because of the Chnese remander theorem whch, n ths case, says there s a unque mappng between the numbers k modulo u and l modulo v, and the number a modulo uv It s clear that the reasonng n the proof of proposton 1 also holds f one replaces the greatest common dvsor by a multplcatve functon of the greatest common dvsor everywhere n equatons 2 to 4, e, replaces gcd(k,u) by f(gcd(k,u)) 2 Prme number representaton of the dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor A fundamental property of multplcatve functons[4] s that the functon value s entrely expressble n functon values of powers of the prme-factors of the argument The explct form for the case where ths functon s the dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor, e, h m (n), s gven n theorem 1 below We defne the symbol θ t,s = H[t s], where H[w] s the Heavsde step functon for ntegral arguments w Hence, θ t,s = 0 f t < s, and θ t,s = 1 f t s The comma-symbol between the ndces s added to avod confuson n case where an ndex s made up of an expresson We also use the functon mn(r,s) ndcatng the mnmum of the ntegral arguments r and s 2
Theorem 1 If the factorzaton of the number n, the argument, n ts prme factors p j,j = 1,,r, s gven as n = r j=1 psj j, where s j, wth s j 1, s the multplcty of prme factor p j, and the order m of the prmtve root of unty, where 1 m n, s wrtten as m = u r pt, wth t 0, gcd(u,p ) = 1, and 1 r, then the dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor can be expressed n prme factors as gcd(k,n)e n m = where ϕ(n) s the Euler totent functon [ (mn(t,s )+1)ϕ(p s )+θ t,s p s 1 ] (6) The multplcty s j of prme p j n n s naturally larger than 0, but m s not necessarly dvsble by p j Therefore, a multplcty t can be equal to zero, ndcatng that prme factor p not s present n the prme factorzaton of m Also, snce m ranges from 1 to n, the multplcty t of prme p n m can be hgher then the multplcty s of the same prme n n Two dfferent proofs wll be gven, an nductve proof and a constructve proof The nductve proof provdes more nsght n the nature of the problem The constructve proof wll be generalzed to the case of the dscrete Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor, further down n ths work In both cases t wll be used that h m (n) s a multplcatve functon, meanng that h m (n) = r h m(p s ), mplyng that theorem 1 only needs to be proven for the case where n equals the power of a sngle prme factor, e, n = p s The ndex can then be omtted because only one factor s consdered Proof 1, nductve proof The two cases gcd(m, n) > 1 and gcd(m, n) = 1 are consdered separately, startng wth the case gcd(m,n) > 1 Inducton wth respect to s wll be appled Case 1 (gcd(m,n) > 1) Step 1 (Base step) When s = 1 t follows that n = p and then also m = p, because that s the only possble value for m where gcd(m,p) > 1 Then also t = 1, and the rght hand sde of equaton 6 becomes 2ϕ(p)+p 0 = 2p 1 For the left hand sde one obtans p gcd(k,p)e p p = p gcd(k,p) = (p 1)1+p = 2p 1 (7) showng that equaton 6 holds for s = 1 Step 2 (Inducton step) Assume that equaton 6 holds for s = s, then wth n = p s and m = up t the nducton hypothess reads p s 2π gcd(k,p s k up )e t p s = (mn(t,s )+1)ϕ(p s )+θ t,s p s 1 Now consder the left hand sde of equaton 8 wth s replaced by s +1, and partton the summaton over k = 1 p s +1 nto two subsets, I and II, where subset I consstes of all multples of p and subset II of the remanng values Hence subset I = {p,2p, p s p} (8) 3
and subset II {1,2, p 1,p + 1, 2p 1,2p+1, p s p 1} Consder the partal summaton over k n subset I usng k = jp, ths gves p s +1 k I gcd(k,p s +1 )e p s +1 upt = p s j=1 p s j=1 gcd(jp,p s +1 2π jp )e p s +1 upt (9) 2π = p gcd(j,p s j up )e t p s (10) = p [ (mn(t,s )+1)ϕ(p s )+θ t,s p s 1 ] (11) = (mn(t,s )+1)ϕ(p s +1 )+θ t,s p s (12) where n the step to equaton 10 t has been used thatgcd(jp,p s +1 ) = pgcd(j,p s ),j = 1 p s, and equaton 11 s obtaned wth the nducton hypothess Equaton 12 follows by usng that the totent functon obeys pϕ(p s ) = ϕ(p s+1 ) for s 1 Next consder the partal summaton over subset II, whch s such that gcd(k,p s +1 ) = 1 Upon rewrtng the summaton over subset II as the dfference of the complete summaton and the summaton over subset I, one obtans p s +1 k II gcd(k,p s +1 )e p s +1 upt = = p s +1 k II p s +1 e p s +1 upt (13) e p s +1 upt e p s +1 upt (14) k I = p s +1 θ t,s +1 θ t,s p s (15) where t has been used that the frst summaton on the rght hand sde of equaton 14 equals zero when t < s +1, by summng the geometrc seres On the other hand, the summand equals 1 f t s +1, resultng n the summaton beng equal to the number of terms, n ths case The second sum also equals zero, except when t s Here the summand equals 1 f t s, because the summaton ndex contans a factor p, and the summaton results n the number of terms, p s, n ths case Collectng terms from equatons 12 and 15, and cancellng the term θ t,s p s, gves p s +1 gcd(k,p s +1 )e p s +1 upt = (mn(t,s )+1)ϕ(p s +1 )+p s +1 θ t,s +1 (16) = (mn(t,s +1)+1)ϕ(p s +1 ) θ t,s +1(p s +1 p s )+p s +1 θ t,s +1 (17) = (mn(t,s +1)+1)ϕ(p s +1 )+θ t,s +1p s (18) 4
In the step from equaton 16 to 17 the property mn(t,s) = mn(t,s+1) θ t,s+1 of the mnmum-functon has been used, as well as the specfc form ϕ(p a ) = p a p a 1 of the totent functon Equaton 18 completes the nducton step, whch started wth equaton 8 Case 2 (gcd(m,n) = 1) Sncen = p s, wthpaprme number, ands > 0, the requrement gcd(m,p s ) = 1 mples that t = 0 n equaton 6, whch mples that the term wth θ t,s always equals 0 Also mn(0, s) = 0 for all s > 0 Hence t has to be proven that p s whch s done n the followng two steps gcd(k,p s )e p s m = ϕ(p s ) (19) Step 3 (Base step, s = 1) Drect evaluaton of the left hand sde of equaton 19, wth s = 1, gves p gcd(k,p)e p m = whch proves the base step p e p m p k=p e p m + p k=p pe p m (20) = 0 1+p (21) = ϕ(p) (22) Step 4 (Inducton step) The equaton to be proven, equaton 19, s dentcal to equaton 8 wth t = 0 and θ t,s = 0, thus we can reuse the strategy used there Assume that equaton 19 holds for s = s, and consder the left hand sde of equaton 19 for s = s +1 Upon agan parttonng the summaton nto the same two subsets I and II, as above, and repeatng steps 9 to 15, where now all terms contanng θ-symbols or mn-functons vansh, one obtans p s +1 whch completes the nducton step All cases beng consdered ths fnalzes the proof gcd(k,p s +1 )e m p s +1 = ϕ(p s +1 ) (23) Proof 2, constructve proof The proof starts from a result [1], that expresses the dscrete Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor n the Drchlet convoluton of that functon and the Ramanujan sum [5] The Drchlet convoluton, denoted f g, of two arthmetc functons, f and g, s defned as f g(n) = d n f( n )g(d) (24) d 5
and the Ramanujan sum as c n (m) = gcd(k,n)=1 e k 2π n m (25) For notatonal reasons we use r m (n) = c n (m) for the Ramanujan sum f t s used n combnaton wth Drchlet convoluton, but also use the more common notaton c n (m) n other cases The result referred to above [1] can now be wrtten as The case f(n) = d(n), readng f(gcd(k,n))e n m = f r m (n) (26) gcd(k,n)e n m = d r m (n), (27) s what s needed here Usng von Sterneck s arthmetc functon [6], the Ramanujan sum can be wrtten as[7] n r m (n) = µ( gcd(m,n) ) ϕ(n) ϕ( n gcd(m,n) ), (28) where µ(n) s the Möbus functon Wth ths representaton of the Ramanujan sum equaton 27 becomes gcd(k,n)e n m = n d µ( d n d gcd(m,d) ) ϕ(d) (29) d ϕ( gcd(m,d) ) As before, only the case wherens a power of a prme numberpneeds to be consdered In that case the dvsors of n also are powers of p Hence, take n = p s, and d = p b,b = 0,,s Agan two cases are consdered, namely gcd(m,p s ) > 1 and gcd(m,p s ) = 1 Case 3 (gcd(m,p s ) = 1) Then for all dvsors d of n t holds that gcd(m,d) = 1 In the summaton on the rght hand sde of equaton 29 the only non-zero contrbutons arse from the terms where d = 1, e, b = 0, and d = p, e, b = 1 For all other values of b the Möbus functon gves zero Thus one obtans from equaton 29, wth n = p s gcd(k,n)e n m = p sϕ(1) ϕ(1) + ps p ( 1)ϕ(p) ϕ(p) whch proves equaton 6 of theorem 1 for ths case (30) = p s p s 1 (31) = ϕ(p s ) (32) 6
Case 4 (gcd(m,p s ) > 1) Ths means that m contans a power of p, e, m = up t, t 1, and gcd(u,p) = 1 Equaton 29 can subsequently be wrtten as gcd(k,n)e n upt = s b=0 p s p b p bµ( gcd(up t,p b ) ) ϕ(p b ) p ϕ( b gcd(up t,p b ) ) (33) The totent functon has the property ϕ(p b ) = p b p b 1,b 1, whereas ϕ(p 0 ) = 1 Therefore the term b = 0 wll be taken out of the summaton n equaton 33, the value of ths term equals p s, rrespectve of t Now partton the sum over b nto two subranges, b = 0,,t and b = t +1,,s, where the second subrange s absent f t s Furthermore, use that gcd(up t,p b ) = p mn(t,b), and that p b µ(1) = µ( gcd(up t,p b ) ) = { 1 b t 1 b = t+1 µ(p b t (34) ) = 0 b > t+1 then equaton 33 becomes = p s + = p s + gcd(k,n)e n m t b=1 t b=1 p s ϕ(p b ) p b 1 + s b=t+1 ϕ(p b ) p bµ(pb t ) p ϕ( b gcd(up t,p b ) ) (35) p s p s p b(pb p b 1 ) ps p t+1 ϕ(p t+1 ) ϕ( pt+1 up t ) (1 θ t,s) (36) = (mn(t,s)+1)ϕ(p s )+θ t,s p s 1 (37) Because gcd(m,p s ) > 1 the frst summaton n equaton 35 contans at least one term, correspondng to the case t = 1 In the second summaton only the term wth b = t + 1 remans, agan because of the propertes of the Möbus functon, except n the case where t s, when ths term s not present at all, resultng n the factor 1 θ t,s n equaton 36 After cancellng a factor p b 1 n the remanng summaton on the rght hand sde of equaton 36 the summand no longer depends on b resultng n a factor mn(t,s) The mn functon results from the fact that the summaton over b runs up to t except when s < t, n whch case t runs up to b = s Equaton 37 s the desred result 3 Dscusson In ths secton a number of nterestng consequences of theorem 1 are dscussed, some of whch are generalzatons of known results 7
Corollary 1 If gcd(m,n) = 1 then the dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor, as gven n equaton 1, s equal to the Euler totent functon, e, f gcd(m,n) = 1 then h m (n) = ϕ(n) Proof From theorem 1 t follows that f gcd(m,n) = 1, then t = 0, mplyng that θ s,t = 0, and mn(t,s ) = 0, = 1,,r Because of the multplcatvty of the totent functon one obtans gcd(k,n)e n m = ϕ(p s ) (38) = ϕ(n) (39) The result of corollary 1 was known for the specal case m = 1, see [1] Corollary 2 If gcd(m,n) = 1 then the Ramanujan sum r m (n) = µ(n) Proof From corollary 1 and equaton 27 t follows that f gcd(m,n) = 1 then d r m (n) = ϕ(n) (40) whch combned wth the well known result that d µ(n) = ϕ(n) proves corollary 2 Corollares 1 and 2 above both apply to the case where gcd(m,n) = 1, n whch case the functon h m (n) becomes entrely ndependent of m As a matter of fact, also for general m does h m (n) only depend on prme factors p of n The only specfc property of m that affects the result s the multplcty t of p n m, as can be seen from theorem 1 4 Generalzatons It s possble to generalze theorem 1 to the case of the dscrete Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor Hence we defne the dscrete Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor as follows Gven an arthmetc functon f(n) : N C, the dscrete Fourer transform of ths functon of the greatest common dvsor wth respect to the m-th order of the n-th root of unty, 1 m n, s gven by ˆf m (n) = f(gcd(k,n))e n m (41) As already made clear n the ntroducton, ˆf m (n) s a multplcatve functon for fxed m f f s a multplcatve functon Moreover, f f s nteger valued then ˆf m (n) s nteger valued, whch also follows from [1] Takng the the dentty functon d(n) := n for f(n), equaton 41 gves the dscrete Fourer transform of the gcd, h m (n) A closed form expresson n the case where f s completely multplcatve wll be proven below The followng lemma covers the general case of a multplcatve functon of the greatest common dvsor, n whch case the result stll contans a summaton When specalzng to a completely multplcatve functon ths summaton can be done 8
Lemma 1 If the factorzaton of the number n n ts prme factors p j,j = 1,,r, s gven as n = r j=1 psj j, where s j, wth s j 1, s the multplcty of prme factor p j, and the number m, where 1 m n, s wrtten as m = u r pt, wth t 0, gcd(u,p ) = 1, and 1 r, then the dscrete Fourer transform of a multplcatve functon f of the greatest common dvsor s gven by f(gcd(k,n))e n m = f(p s )+(p 1) mn(t,s ) b=1 p b 1 f(p s b ) f(p s t 1 )p t (1 θ t,s ) (42) Proof The proof s smlar to the proof of theorem 1, we repeat the constructve proof based on equaton 26 and von Sterneck s formula, equaton 28, where now the dentty functon d(n) s replaced by f(n), gcd(k,n)e n m = f( n d )µ( d gcd(m,d) ) ϕ(d) (43) d ϕ( d n gcd(m,d) ) Steps smlar to those from equaton 33 to 37 for the case gcd(m,n) > 1 and from equaton 30 to equaton 31 for the case gcd(m,n) = 1 produce the result of lemma 1 The result of theorem 1 s recovered from lemma 1 by takng f = d In that case the summand of the summaton n equaton 42 becomes ndependent of the summaton ndex whch means that the summaton results n a factor mn(t, s) After regroupng terms equaton 6 of theorem 1 s obtaned In order to make further progress t s needed to make assumptons about the functon f We wll consder the natural case of specalzng to a completely multplcatve functon In ths case the summaton n lemma 1 can be explctly performed Theorem 2 The dscrete Fourer transform of a completely multplcatve functon f, not equal to the dentty functon d, of the greatest common dvsor s, under the condtons of lemma 1, gven by f(gcd(k,n))e n m = +(p 1)f(p s 1 ) [ f(p s ) f(ps t 1 )p t (1 θ t,s ) f(p mn(t,s) ) p mn(t,s) ] f(p mn(t,s) ) p f(p mn(t,s) 1 ) (1 δ 0t ) Proof If the functon f s completely multplcatve then f(n s ) = f s (n), and the seres n equaton 42, lemma 1, becomes geometrc As a consequence the summaton can be performed leadng to the gven closed form expresson The absence of the summed term for the case t = 0 has been made explct wth factor 1 δ 0t 9 (44)
If the functon f equals the dentty functon the closed form formula for a geometrc seres dverges However the seres can stll be summed as proven n theorem 1 The sum functon of an arthmetc functon t(n) s defned as the Drchlet product of t(n) wth the constant one functon 1(n) := 1 as S t (n) = (1 t)(n) (45) If the functon f s wrtten as the sum functon of some functon t, f = 1 t, then the followng corollary can be formulated Corollary 3 If the functon f(n) s the sum functon of the functon t(n), e, f(n) = 1 t(n), then, for those values of m that are such that gcd(m,n) = 1, the dscrete Fourer transform of the sum functon of the greatest common dvsor gves back the functon t, e, ˆf m (n) = t(n) Proof From equatons 41 and 26 t follows that ˆf m (n) = r m f(n), whch s what s proven n [1] From corollary 2 t then follows that ˆf m (n) = µ(n) 1 t(n) = t(n) because the Möbus functon s the Drchlet nverse of the constant one functon As an nterestng example of the applcaton of theorem 2 consder the power functon d k (n) = n k (46) Ths s a completely multplcatve functon not equal to the dentty functon f k 1, hence theorem 2 apples On the other hand, f k = 1, the functon d k equals the dentty functon and theorem 1 apples It can be verfed that applyng theorem 2 wth f = d k and then takng the lmt k 1, usng l Hoptals rule, reproduces the result of theorem 1 We wll not reproduce ths here The sum-functon S f of a multplcatve functon f(n) can be expressed n the prmefactors of the argument as follows[7] S f (n) = [ ] 1+f(p )+ +f(p s ) (47) Wth the help of lemma 1 t s possble to obtan a converse relaton, as expressed by the followng corollary Corollary 4 Gven n = r sum-functon S f as ps, a multplcatve functon f can be expressed n ts f(n) = [ ] S f (p s ) Sf (p s 1 ) (48) 10
Proof From lemma 1 and formula 26, takng S f for f, and choosng m such that gcd(m, n) = 1, t follows that S f r m (n) = [ ] S f (p s ) Sf (p s 1 ) (49) because the condtongcd(m,n) = 1 mples thatt = 0, = 1,,r, resultng n both the uncompleted sum and the symbol θ t,s n equaton 42 beng zero Wth corollary 2 equaton 48 of corollary 4 follows drectly from equaton 49 Note that corollary 4 apples generally, and has no dependence on the order of unty m anymore Corollary 4 reduces to the famlar expresson for the Euler totent functon, vald for n 1, ϕ(n) = [ ] p s p s 1 (50) f ϕ s chosen for f and one uses that the dentty s the sum-functon of the totentfuncton, as expressed by the well known formula, Conversely, equaton 49 can be wrtten as d µ(n) = ϕ(n) (51) f µ(n) = [ ] f(p s ) f(ps 1 ) (52) n whch form t can be vewed as a generalzaton of formula 51 If the power functon d k, see expresson 46 above, s chosen for the functon f n equaton 52, the well known relaton for the Jordan functon J k (n), defned as d k µ(n) = J k (n) (53) J k (n) = n k ( 1 1 ) p k (54) s obtaned J k (n) s a generalzaton of the totent functon wth ϕ(n) = J 1 (n) 11
5 The GCD sum functon The sum of greatest common dvsors s called Plla s arthmetcal functon[8] An expresson for ths sum exsts [9], and reads, n the notaton of the referred work, p α j=1 gcd(j,p α ) = (α+1)p α αp α 1 (55) = (α+1)ϕ(p α )+p α 1 (56) Ths sum s just a specal case of the dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor correspondng to the case m = n By vrtue of lemma 1 and theorem 2 ths sum can now be generalzed to the sum of a functon of the greatest common dvsor Hence we can formulate the followng corollary Corollary 5 Gven a multplcatve functon f, the sum over k,k = 1,,n of the functon values f(gcd(k,n)) of the greatest common dvsor can be expressed n the prme factors of the number n = r ps n the followng way f(gcd(k,n)) = [ f(p s )+(p 1) s b=1 ] p b 1 f(p s b ) If the functon f s completely multplcatve, but not equal to the dentty functon d, the sum n expresson 57 can be evaluated, yeldng f(gcd(k,n)) = [ f(p s )+(p 1)f(p s 1 ) ] f(p s ) p s f(p s ) p f(p s 1 ) Proof of corollary 5 By takng the dscrete Fourer transform wth m = n n expresson 42, t follows that t = s, = 1,,r mplyng that mn(t,s ) = s and 1 θ s,t = 0 and consequently the statements of corollary 5 follow mmedately from lemma 1, and theorem 2 (57) (58) 6 Example Consder the case n = pq, wth p and q dfferent prme numbers, and p < q The totent functon then equals ϕ(pq) = (p 1)(q 1) Vew the dscrete Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor as a mappng of the array of greatest common dvsors, ndexed by k, nto the array h m (n), defned n equaton 1, and ndexed by the order of the root of unty m Thus, k and m run over the same set of values, namely 1 n Applyng theorem 1 results n the representaton, gven n table 1, of the functon h m (n) defned n equaton 1 It should be kept n mnd that the explct layout of such tables depends on the actual values of the prme factors of the number n In the layout of table 1, for example, t s assumed that p 2 > q, but ths could of course just as well be the other way round 12
k,m gcd(k,n) h m (n) 1 1 ϕ(n) p 1 1 ϕ(n) p p (2p 1)(q 1) p+1 1 ϕ(n) 2p 1 1 ϕ(n) 2p p (2p 1)(q 1) 2p+1 1 ϕ(n) q 1 1 ϕ(n) q q (p 1)(2q 1) q +1 1 ϕ(n) p ϕ(n) p 2 p (2p 1)(q 1) p ϕ(n) n 1 1 ϕ(n) n n (2p 1)(2q 1) Table 1: Representaton of h m(n),n = pq Note that there are, n ths case, only four possble outcomes for h m (n) It s a general property ofh m (n) that relatvely few values are possble Consder the case wheren = p s, then, from theorem 1, the followng cases for m can be dstngushed ϕ(p s ) (gcd(m,n) = 1) h m (n) = (t+1)ϕ(p s ) (gcd(m,n) = p t,t < s) (59) (s+1)ϕ(p s )+p s 1 (gcd(m,n) = p s ) Obvously, tables smlar to table 1 can be constructed for all n gven the prme factorzaton of n As another example, consder the case n = p 3 q 2 w, wth p, q, and w dfferent prme numbers Ths results n the representaton gven n table 2, ths tme ncludng just one typcal entry The totent functon now equals ϕ(n) = (p 3 p 2 )(q 2 q)(w 1) 7 Concluson The dscrete Fourer transform of a functon of the greatest common dvsor has been expressed drectly n functon values of the prme factors of the argument Thus, an altenatve way of calculatng the transform s establshed Instead of evaluatng a sum 13
k,m gcd(k,n) h m (n) 1 1 ϕ(n) p 2 q 2 p 2 q 2 3ϕ(p 2 ) [ 3ϕ(q 2 )+q ] ϕ(w) n n [ 4ϕ(p 3 )+p 2][ 3ϕ(q 2 )+q ] [2ϕ(w)+1] Table 2: Representaton of h m(n),n = p 3 q 2 w of terms contanng exponental factors, an exprsson based on functon values of powers of prme factors has to be evaluated Naturally ths approach requres knowledge of the prme factors Specalzng to the dentty-functon, relatonshps wth the Möbus functon and the Euler totent functon have been obtaned Furthermore, by takng the order m equal to the root of unty n, an expresson n prme factors of the sum of functon values of the greatest common dvsor could be stated Examples of explct layouts, based on the order m, have been presented Acknowledgement Ths research has been made possble through fundng by the faculty of health, scence and technology at Karlstad unversty References References [1] W Schramm, The Fourer transform of functons of the greatest common dvsor, Integers 8 (2008) A50 [2] P H van der Kamp, On the Fourer transform of the greatest common dvsor, Integers 13 (2013) A24 [3] J Kluyver, Some formulae concernng the ntegers less than n and prme to n, KNAW, Proceedngs, Amsterdam 9 I (1906) [4] T M Apostol, Introducton to analytc number theory, Sprnger-Verlag, Berln Hedelberg, 1976 [5] S Ramanujan, On certan trgonometrc sums and ther applcatons n the theory of numb ers, Transactons of the Cambrdge Phlosophcal Socety 22 (1918) [6] R D von Sterneck, En analogon zur addtven zahlentheore, Stzber, Akad Wss Wen, Math Naturw Klasse I ll (Abt I Ia) (1902) [7] G Hardy, E Wrght, An Introducton to the Theory of Numbers (5th ed), Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1979 [8] S Plla, On an arthmetc functon, Annamala Unversty Journal II (1933) [9] K A Broughan, The gcd-sum functon, Journal of nteger sequences 4 (8) (2001)
