2 EXPOSING OUR EHEMY Dr. Russell Benoit, Instructor course syllabus 1. Course Description: Jesus has defeated our adversary, however many Christians perish for lack of this knowledge. The purpose of this course is to tell who the devil is and how he operates against mankind today. It is designed to do so from the position of his total defeat by Jesus Christ, the son of God. In every area of the Christian's Life, God's word speaks of freedom from demon bondage. This course addresses the bondages of the devil and the solutions to those bondages. 2. Course Objectives: A. TO SCRIPTURALLY DESCRIBE THE DEVIL. B. TO DESCRIBE LUCIFER'S POSITION IN HEAVEN. C. TO LEARN OF HIS FALL FROM HEAVEN, AND WHO FELL WITH HIM. D. TO DISCOVER WHERE HE IS OPERATING FROM TODAY. E. TO DEFINE THE NATURE OF A DEMON SPIRIT. F. TO DESCRIBE HOW DEMONS AFFECT THE BODY, SOUL AND SPIRIT. G. TO REMOVE FEAR OF THE DEVIL FROM THE CHRISTIAN. H. TO TEACH THE AUTHORITY A CHRISTIAN HAS OVER ALL DEMON SPIRITS, EVEN SATAN HIMSELF, IN THE NAME OF JESUS. I. TO TEACH THE LIBERTY GIVEN TO THE CHRISTIAN THROUGH THE SHED BLOOD OF JESUS. J. TO STRIP SATAN OF HIS FACADE AND SHOW HIM TO BE COMPLETELY DEFEATED BY JESUS.

3 EXPOSING OUR ENEMY (CHAPTER ONE) 2 COR. 2:9-11: "FOR TO THIS END ALSO DID I WRITE, THAT I MIGHT KNOW THE PROOF OF YOU, WEATHER YE BE OBEDIENT IN ALL THINGS. TO WHOM YE FORGIVE ANYTHING, I FORGIVE ALSO: FOR YOUR SAKES FORGIVE I IT IN THE PERSON OF CHRIST; LEST SATAN SHOULD GET AN AD-VANTAGE OF US: FOR WE ARE NOT IGNORANT OF HIS DEVICES." 1. APOSTLE PAUL, IN ADDRESSING THE SUBJECT OF FORGIVENESS, MAKES A STATEMENT CONCERNING SATAN. A. PAUL STATES THAT HE KNOWS WHO THE DEVIL IS, AND HE REFUSES TO LET HIM GET AN ADVANTAGES. 1. The word "Device" means, purpose, intellect, ways of thinking. 2. The word "Advantage" means, to become prey to, to be defrauded or robbed, to get the better of a foe through force. 3. Ephesians 4:27, says, Neither give place to the devil. B. GOD SAID IN HOSEA 4:6, "MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE. 1. If ifis true that not being ignorant to satan's devices keeps him from getting an advantage, then it would also be true that being ignorant to his devices would give him an advantage. C. ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASON'S FOR HELL'S SUCCESS IN OUR SOCIETY TODAY IS BECAUSE THE CHURCH IS IGNORANT TO SATAN'S DEVICES. 1 A large percentage of Pastors and the majority of people in the United States, do not believe that satan and hell even exist.

4 2. You can't fight an enemy that you don't think exists, which is exactly why satan has an advantage in so many lives. D. THE DEVIL IS NOT SOME IMAGINARY CREATURE OF EVIL 1. Satan is a real being working in the earth today, with Millions of demons working with and for him. 2. Its time the Church today to stop considering the subject of demon activity Taboo. E. JESUS TALKED ABOUT THE ACTIVITY OF DEMON SPIRIT AND COMMANDED US THE BELIEVERS, TO GO INTO THE WORLD AND CAST OUT DEVILS. 1. MARK 16:17. "And these signs shall follow them that believe, In my name, they shall cast out devils. 2. To not talk about the subject of demons and to not see what the bible says about them is, first of all, not seeking the whole counsel of God through his word, and secondly, giving satan an advantage. F. WF. HAVE TO KNOW OUR ENEMY IS IF WE HAVE TO FIGHT HIM. 1. We become prey to satan if we do not know who he is or anything about his schemes. 2. God does not want us ignorant of satan's devices. 2. IN ANY WARFARE, IT IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT TO KNOW AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE ENEMY. A. One of the main reasons for the success of lying spirits, is there

5 ability to remain unrecognized, B. If you want to avoid spiritual tragedy in your life, and keep others from having tragedy in there lives, you must recognize the reality the reality of your opponent 1. 1 peter 5;8. "Be sober, be vigilant, because the adversary devil, as a roaring lion, walked about, seeking whom he may devour" 2. However, 1 John 4:4 savs. "Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." 3. If you use the Name of Jesus, who is the lion of the tribe of Judah, then you can walk about in the authority of the king-pjojbl of God, seeking to devour Him. Praise God 3. IN WAR, THERE ARE FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ENEMY. A. FIRST OF ALL, you need to know who the enemy is or identify him. B. SECONDLY, you need to know where the enemy is, or locate his attack points. C. THIRDLY, you need to engage him in combat. D. FOURTH AND LAST, you need to stay until you win and be persistent. 4. LETS IDENTIFY WHO 2 COR. 4:4. SAYS IS THE god OF THIS WORLD. SATAN (OR LUCIFER) A. READ ISAIAH 14:12-17: 1. VERSE 12 SAYS, How "or why are you fallen from heaven oh lucifer."

6 2. Lucifer had tried to lead a rebellion against God. 3. In verse 13, Lucifer said in his heart, I will ascent into heaven (or I will ). 4. Sin is an attitude of the heart. 5. In verse 13, Lucifer also said, that he would exalt his throne over the stars or ( ) of God. A. Satan was also saying that he was going to start ruling OVER all the other angels. 6. Satan also said in verse 13. that he was going to sit onjhe mount of the congregation on the sides of the north. 7. In verse 14. satan said that he was going to ascend above the heights of the clouds and be like the most high. ( ) 5. SATAN SAW A DISTORTED VIEW OF WHO HE REALLY WAS; HE HAD "I" TROUBLE. A. He said, "I will ascend into Heaven, I will exalt my throne the throne of God, I will sit also on the sides of the congregation in the sides of the north. I will ascent above the clouds, I will be like the Most High." B. Satan today tries to get people to see a distorted view of who they really are in Christ. Why? 1. HELPLESS 2. HOPELESS 3. MEANINGLESS 4. BECAUSE HE'S TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO THINK

7 LIKE HE DOES. C. ALL OF THE "I WILL'S" SHOWS THAT SATAN AND HIS FALLEN ANGELS OR DEMONS, DO HAVE WILLS OF THEIR OWN. 1. Their will was to rebel against God, for which they will be eternally dammed. 2. One of their primary task today is to get man to do THEIR will. 3. For a demon to have his fullest expression on the earth, he_ needs a body. 4. Demons seek to inhabit or use human beings: The second best is animals. 5. AFTER LUCIFER DECIDED IN HIS HEART THAT HE WOULD KICK GOD OFF HIS THRONE AND TAKE OVER HEAVEN, HE ENTERED INTO THE PRESENCE OF GOD. A. God immediately detected the sin of rebellion. B. God did not create lucifer to be evil, but he did create him with a will, and lucifer, In his heart devised evil. C. When lucifer came into God's Presence, God's holiness quickly detected sin and a Flash of God's Glory knocked him and his angels out of heaven. 1. Jesus said in Luke 10:18. I beheld satan as lightning fall FROM Heaven. 2. The devil thought he was something, he was nothing, he was and still is a self decieved and powerless liar. 3. Jesus has all power over satan. and we have the same power

8 in his name. 4. Our God the Most High, is still occupying Heaven and sitting on his throne. 5. We recognize who our enemy, but we don't fear him. In Jesus Name, we bind him and Win. AMEN. 9 EXPOSING OUR ENEMY (CHAPTER TWO) READ REV. 12:1-9; Rev. 12: 3 & 4. "And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars (angels) of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born." A. the word "stars" often speaks of angels; when satan fell, he took one third of the angels of Heaven with him. B. One third of he angels probably numbers in the millions 1. Rev, 5; 11 says, "And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the numbers of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands. C. We must remember that a million demons have the same amount of power over the Christian as just one demon. Zero power. D. Issus stripped the devil and his demons of their power against us and has said. "All power is given unto in heaven and in earth.." Math 28: If Jesus has it all, then satan has zero' 2. The key to living free from satan's bondage is for the Christian to know who he is in Christ, and in Jesus Name, use His God

10 3. The Power of God is put into action by the Christian speaking in the name of Jesus. E. In yourself, you have no power over the devil or demons, but in and through the name of Jesus, you have all power. 1. If you don't know who you are, from God's Word, then satan gets an advantage through our ignorance. F. We should not be intimidated by the fact that one third of the angels fell with satan for two reasons: 1. In Jesus name, we have all power over them. If one third of the angels fell, then two thirds of them didn't 3. Hebrews 1:14 says that the angels are all ministering spirits sent forth to minister to the heirs of salvation. THIS IS US THE BELIEVERS. 2. IN 2 KINGS 6. THE STORY IS TOLD OF ELISHA AND HIS SERVANT. 1. The king of Syria was mad at Elisha because he was telling all of the king's secret plans to the Israeli Generals, so he sent out thousands of soldiers to capture him. 2. Elisha's servant came outside and saw all of the enemy hosts that had them surrounded; he ran back in the house yelling, Master, master, what shall we do? 3. Elisha answered, "Relax, there are more that be with us than be with them," and he prayed that his servant's (Spiritual Eyes) would be opened.

11 4. The servant was able to see that the hillsides were full of the angels of God. 5. For every demon we face, there are at least two angels ready to help us defeat him. 3. Isaiah 14; "How (Why) art thou fallen from Heaven, O Lucifer, son of.. the morning, how art thou cut down to the ground which didst weaken the nations:...read. (REVIEW OF CHAPTER ONE) A. Verse 13: Sin is conceived in the heart. Satan is the originator and the conceiver of all sin. Stars refers to angels. B. Verse 14: Satan actually thought he could be God And evidently his power and abilities were very visible because one third of all the angels taught he could, too God threw those angels out of Heaven for believing it. What a price to pay. C. Verse 13-17: The "I wills show us two things: that satan had a distorted view of who he really was and that he and his demons do have wills. They have ability to reason, tjuj communicate. 4. Read Ezekiel 28:1-2. "The word of the Lord came again unto me, saying... A. Verse 2. speaks of the prince (spirit) of Tyrus, calling him a man: yet we know that satan is a spirit, not a man.

12 1. The king (man) of Tyrus, who Josephus says was King Ithobalus n, was possessed by Satan. 2. Satan is using King Ithobalus to project his will on the earth. B. The king of Tyrus is a man (King Ithobalus), but the "prince" of Tyrus is not a man; he is Lucifer, a demon. C. To get anything done for the kingdom of God in or around Tyrus, -we would have to war against the prince of Tyrus, who controls the king of Tyrus. 1. Your fight would not be with the man, it would be with the spirit, the prince of Tyrus. 5. Ephesians6:10-ll. "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." A. The word "wiles" in verse II means "methods, arts, cunning devices, strategies." n B. Read (Ephesians 6:12) 1. Flesh and blood refer to human beings, to King Ithobalus. 2. We fight against principalities, which is another word for princes, (spirits) C. Read (Ephesians 6: D. Read (Ephesians 6:li) E. Read Ephesians 6:12)

13 1. Our fight is not with one another, but with the devil and the demon forces of evil. 2. In Jesus' name, we resist the devil's attacks and remove his strongholds. 3. We must realize who we're to be fighting (not people, organizations and methods, but rather the spirit of Hell), for then we would start winning.

14 EXPOSING OUR ENEMY (Chapter Three) Read (Isaiah 14:12-17) 1. Ephesians6:12 refers to a "heavenly sphere." (Living Bible) A. Principalities (princes) rule from the heavenly sphere. B. Lesser demons also operate from the heavenly sphere. C. To get things done for Godson Earth, we war against master spirits in the heavenly sphere. 2. Where is the heavenly sphere? A. There are three heavens: 1 Read (2 Corinthians 12:1-4) is the third heaven (where God is). 2. (Atmospheric Heavens). 3. (Astrological heavens occupied by Satan and demons. 2. Satan tries to rule as the god of this world from the astrological heavens. A. Jesus speaks of the devil as being the prince of this world:

15 2. John 16-11: "The prince of this world is judged." 3. John 12-31: "Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out." B. Many Bible scholars believe that Satan's headquaters are in the astrological heavens. 1. Satan isn't in Hell right now: he's in the heavenly sphere, trying to influence the earth and the people it to dohis_wjll. 2. Matthew 25:41 says that hell was created for the devil and his angels, but they didn't come from there. / 3. We can tell demons to go into space, or into the dry and desolate places of the earth, or to just go, but we cannot cast them into Hell. 4. The occult world places much emphasis on the astrological and the stars. A. Stars-horoscope-it is a big thing to some people to know what zodiac sign other people are under. B. Consulting vour horoscope for guidance is an abomination in the eyes of God. 1. Leviticus 19:31. "Regard nnt the People that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God." 2. Leviticus 20:6. "And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off

16 from among his people. C. Hundreds of thousands of people worship the sun god, who is in the astrological sphere. D. Others worship the moon, which some Bible scholars think is Satan's headquarters. 1. The moon controls a lot of what takes place on this earth. 2. Witches and warlocks conduct their meetings when the moon is the fullest. E. A name often given to a demon possessed individual or one who is uncontrollable and out of his mind is "lunatic." 1. Matthew 4:24 says they brought to Jesus the sick, those who were taken with divers kinds of diseases, those who were possessed with devils and lunatics. 2. Matthew 17:15 says a man came to Jesus saying, "Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatjck r and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and often in the water." F. The word "lunatic" comes from the word "lunar". 1. The Greek word for lunatick used in Matthew 4:24 and Matthew 17:15 is the word "selene". 2. The word "selene" means "to be moon struck". 5. There is actual warfare in the heavens.

17 A. Read Daniel 10: B. Daniel 10:13. "But the prince of the kingdom Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia." 1. Angels do assist us in warfare. 2. There are different ranks of God's angels. 6. References to third heaven: A. Read Eohesians 1: B. Read Ephesians 1: C. Read Ephesians 2:1-2. D. Read Ephesians 2: If we have been positioned in Paradise in Christ Jesus, where does that place us as far as the devil is concerned? A. Satan is beneath our feet! B. We hve been raised from an earthy position to the highest heavenly position. C. We must recognize our position and go to war.

18 D. There is completeness in our deliverance from the devil's power. EXPOSING OUR ENEMY (CHAPTER 4) ReadEzekiel28:l For a demon to have his fullest expression on this earth, he needs a body. A. Satan used King Ithobalus to project his will on earth. B. King Ithobalus took on the attitude and nature of Lucifer. 1. Read Ezekiel 28:2. 2. Read Isaiah 14:13& King Ithobalus took on Satan's nature. C. A demon possessed (a better word is "influenced") person takes on the nature of whatever demon is influencing him. 1. Example: Spirit of lust. 2. Example: Lying spirit. 3. Example: Spirit of rejection. 2. Ezekiel 28:11&12: "Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty." A. Satan is very wise in the areas of wisdom and evil.

19 1. We do not deal with the devil from the position of evil; we deal with him from the position of fgithjn Jesus. B. God gave us a higher level of wisdom than Satan possesses. 1. We must stay in the word of God. 2. We must stay in fellowship with God. 3. We must stay filled with the spirit. 4. Jude 1:20: "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost." 3. Ezekiel28:12-13a: "Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God." A. Lucifer was in the garden of Eden, not the king of Tyrus. B. Lucifer was perfect in beauty, or a "pattern" for beauty. 1. Lucifer was called "the son of the morning", which means "light hearer" C. Read Ezekiel D. Satan tries to put on the same appearance today, by always presenting something that looks good. 1-2 Cor. 11:14 says that he always comes as an angel of light. E. Satan never shows the ugliness of sin-he only shows the beauty. 1. Example-the alcoholic. 2. Example- The adulterer.

20 3. Example- The drug addict. F. If you follow Satan's deception, he will have won and will laugh at you all the way to Hell. 7. Ezekiel 28:13c: "The workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in the day that thou was created." A. Satan had a ministry in Heaven around the throne of God. B. Ezekiel 28:13 speaks of tabrets and pipes (percussion and wind instruments). C. Isaiah 14:11&12 speaks of viols (stringed instruments). D. Before he fell, Satan was minister of music in Heaven. 1. He was the one who led worship and praise unto Father God 2. As the angelic hosts would sing praises unto God, Lucifer would put orchestration to it. E. It wasn't enough for Satan to be worship leader; soon he began to desire the praise and worship for himself. 5. Satan's number one way of spreading his deception is through music. A. Example: Rock music. B. Example: Country music. C. We should not give Satan an advantage by listening to his music. D. Music was created to worship God.

21 EXPOSING OUR ENEMY (CHAPTER 5) READ EZEKIEL 28:14 1. Lucifer was the anointed cherub that covereth, referring to his wings covering the mercy seat of God. A. Exodus 25:20 tells of how the cherubims' wings stretched out over the mercv seat of God. A. satan had a throne room ministry, B. he can get an advantage over us. 2. It is thought by bible scholars that each personality of the Godhead had an arcangele who was answerable to Him. A. Father God's (the highest) Arc angel is called "Michael" 1. Michael, a warring angel, helps represent the power of father God. He is know as the warrior. B. The Holv Spirit's arc angel is called "Gabriel" 1. The Holy Spirit's ministry is in the area of communication and comfort, and Gabriel assists him in this capacity. 2. Read luke 1: It tells us how Gabriel communicated the birth of Jesus Christ. 3. Mary said in verse 34 that she knew not a man, (Sexually) and Gabriel answered in verse 35, "The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee." ; C. Lucifer was the archangel that assisted Jesus, the Son of God. 1. When lucifer fell and corrupted man with sin, the Godhead devised a plan to destroy him, and Jesus stepped forward to

22 implement that plan. 2. Read 1 John 3:8 It says, "he that commiteth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was Manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." 3. The Amplified says of 1 John 3:8 "The reason the Son of. was manifest (made visible) was to undo (destroy loosen and dissolve), the works. the devil [has done]." 3. In devising a plan to destroy the devil, Ood decided to beat lucifer at the very thing he's best at. A. lucifer is the best in the area of sin and death. He Created It B. God decided to use sin and death to destroy the works of the devil, God then hid the idea in His own thinking, from the foundation of the world. C. Jesus came to earth, became flesh and lived among man. He went to calvary, where the sins of the world were put upon Him. D. Lucifer saw that Jesus Became sin and he observed His death, so Lucifer thought that he had won*. 1. At that point in time lucifer had the keys to death. 2. Since God was the author of life, satan thought he would have to beat him in life. (In Jesus's Life time).. : 3. God, the author of life, however, used death to destroy lucifer. E. Because of his sinless life, God could accept the sacrifice of Jesus as payment in full for the sins of mankind. 1. Read Hebrews 2:14-17

23 F. For thousands of years, death had been able to hold man and bind him to the grave, but death couldn't hold the sinless Son of God. G. After three days and nights in the grave, The Holy Spirit quickened Jesus. ("Quickened" means made alive) It was here the power of sin and death was broken; H. Read colossians 2; 15 It says "And having spoiled principalities and powers, he (Jesus) made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it." 1. "spoiled" means "wrecked, demolished." 2. In Revelation 1:18. Jesus says, "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." 4. Read 1 Corinth. 15;-51-S7 "Behold I show you a mystery. A. On the third day, Jesus arose from the dead and Stripped Satan of all his powers. 5. Read 1 Corinth. 2;5-8 says, "That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.... A. God, in His brilliance, designed Lucifer's destruction and Jie_ didn't know what hit him until it hit him: B. Jesus took the insubordinate archangel, lucifer, and stripped him of all his powers over the people of God. C. In Jesus name, we have complete and total victory. "We need our Ears opened to what the Spirit is saying the the Church"

24 Exposing our enemy (Chapter 6) 1. Question, If satan rules from the astrological sphere, then why do we say that Jesus died, went to hell, and took the keys away from the devil? How can we say that Satan rules from the astrological sphere and say he's in hell at he same time? A. Before Christ's death, Hell had two compartments. 1. The righteous dead were held in the grave; the unrighteous dead went to another part of Hell, a place of torment. B. When Jesus died he went to the grave part of Hell and preached deliverance to the captive there. Read 1 peter 3: The word key stands for Authority 2. Jesus took away satan's authority to bind up the people of God. 2. The statement was made that when lucifer fell from Heaven, one third of the angels fell with him. it was also stated that satan and the fallen angels (or demons), are not in hell that they're on Earth trying to corrupt man. Question: If that's true, what do we do with Jude 1:6-7 A. There are some angels chained up in Hell, they are wicked spirits who committed fornication. B. Read 11 peter 2: This passage of scriptures refers us back to the days of Noah;

25 the angels referred to commited unlawful sexual intercourse. C. Read Genesis 6: The children produced between the sons of God and the daughters of men were giants. 2. The term "sons of God" in the Hebrew language is Pne-Ha-Elnhim. and applies only to angels in the Old Testament. 3. God took the angels that had committed fornication and locked them up in Hell until the end time judgement. D. Lucifer and his angels are not bound up yet, they are still moving and operating on the Earth today. 3. Satan wanted the spirits to commit fornication with the women so he could corrupt man's bloodline. A. If satan could breed his nature into all of humanity God would not have had a righteous lineage to bring Jesus into the Earth. B. God had to bind the wicked spirits up, and then He destroyed the earth by flood, saving a remnant of eligible people which life could be preserved and through which Jesus could eventually come. C. Many Bible theologians believe that, in the last days, satan will actually raise up seed again through a demon possessed woman. D. Satan would be counterfeiting what God did with Jesus. A demon could possess the spirits of an individual which would put them in a kind of spiritual stupor/bind. 2. A demon could possess or influence the soul of an individual. 3. A demon could possess the body, or more specifically, a part of an individual's body. 4. A demon could possess any two of the three part of man. 5. In rare cases, spirit, soul and body could be possessed by demon spirits. 6. The word "possessed" means "to influence, to hold someone, to bind up" and it can mean "to control." 3. CAN A CHRISTIAN BE DEMON POSSESSED? CAN A CHRIS- TIAN BE UNDER THE CONTROL OF A DEMON SPIRIT? A. Most Full Gospel churches say something similar to this: "The Bible says that the spirit of God and the devil cannot live in the same house, therefore, a Christian cannot be demon possessed." B. Caning that idea out to its furthest degree, we would have to also say that since a Christian has the spirit of God in him, he could never be sick again or sin again. 1. Both sin and sickness are; of the devil, so how could they get

29 hold of the Christian? C. I don't believe that the spirit of God and the devil can live in the same house either. 1. The spirit of God takes up residence in a Christian's spirit. 2. If you are a born again Christian, I do not believe that a CHRISTIAN can possess your spirit, because God lives in your spirit. 3. I do believe that a demon can oppress both your soul and body. See mental illness and physical illness. D. After the new birth, the soul and the body are unregenerate, so If a Christian give place to the devil and does not recognize and stand in his authority through the name of Jesus, then Yes a demon spirits can come in and possess portions of the soul and body. 1. They cannot do it, however, unless you give place to them. 2. Jesus stripped satan of his power over us, and if well use the name of Jesus against him, we can stop his attacks. E. Lying spirits also keep millions of people every year from coming to Jesus.

People come to church and hear the gospel message, but when it comes time for the altar call, lying spirits start their evil work. E. The truth is that no one conies to the Father, but through Jesus. EXPOSING OUR ENEMY (CHAPTER 9) READ 1 THESSALONIANS 2: THESSALONIANS 2:18 Says, Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but satan hindered us. A. Demon spirits do everything they can to get in the way of the church and hinder it from doing what God called it to do. B. In this scripture, the great apostle Paul admits that satan hindered even him. 1. Sometimes people think that bigger you get for God, the less of the devil you have to contend with. C. We never mature to the point that we don't have to deal with the devil. D. James 4:7 says, Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

32 E. Frequently, when you decide to really get going for God, all kinds of things happen to hinder you. F. Some hinderances are a result of everyday life, but some are a result of demon spirits trying to hinder you; both need to be taken authority over in Jesus name. 2. Read 2 Corinth. 12; 1-7, A. Paul had received tremendous revelations from the Lord, and because of those revelations, satan sent a demon to harass him. 1. Just because you've received revelation knowledge, doesn't mean that you want have to fight with the devil. B. The messenger of satan came to Paul to buffet him, and Paul prayed three times asking the Lord to get rid of the demon spirit C. God told Paul that His grace was sufficient for Paul, meaning that God has given Paul grace enough to take care of it. not to just take it. " We don't have to accept satan's lies. 1. the word "grace* means "divine enablement" D. Jesus already stripped satan of his power, then he handed us the keys. E. It is our responsibility to bind up the devil and in Jesus name, stop him. 3. Mark 5, tells the story of the Gadarene demoniac, a man completely demon possessed. A. "Possessed means to me exercised by a demon, to be under the power of a demon, to be bound up by a demon, to be demonized

33 B. Read Mark 5:1-4 C. People who are demon possessed can, at times exude tremendous strength physically. 1. Practical advise: Do not grab hold of a demon-possessed person unless it's absolutely necessary. 2. Demon possession causes violent reactions. E. Mark 5:5 says, "And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. 1. Demon possessed people are extremely tormented and often must be institutionalized. F. Read mark 5: Demons still come to church today and pretend to worship God, but its phony and you can always tell it. 2. Demons spirits can speak through people today, but you should carry on a conversation with them. G. In Matthew 8:29. two demon possessed men said something similar to Jesus, "Art thou come hither to torment us before time"? H. Mark 5:8. "For he said unto him, come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.". As soon as Jesus saw the man, he told the devil to go. I. Mark 5:9. "And he asked him, what is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many."

Psalms 33:3. says, "Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with loud noise." 3. Not only did God devised a brilliant plan to defeat lucifer, but Jesus also completely stripped him of all his powers. A. The devil is utterly defeated; all he has left is Hell. B. We have been made to be kings and priests unto God. C. Read 11 Cor. 3:4-18. D. Verse 18. says that we with open face behold in a glass the glory of the Lord. E. We are welcome in the throne room, to behold God in his Glory, and as we do so, we are changed into the same image so we can reflect it to the world. 1. God wants to be seen in and through the lives of his people.

39 Logos Library System Page 1 SATAN. The word itself, the Hebrew satan, is simply an "adversary," and is so used in 1 Sam. 29:4; 2 Sam. 19:22; 1 Kings 5:4; 11:14, 23, 25; Num. 22:22,32; Ps. 109:6. This original sense is still found in our Lord's application of the name to St. Peter in Matt. 16:23. It is used as a proper name or title only four times in the Old Testament, viz. (with the article) in Job 1:6, 12; 2:1; Zech. 2:1, and (without the article) in 1 Chron. 21:1. It is with the scriptural revelation on the subject that we are here concerned; and it is clear, from this simple enumeration of passages, that it is to be sought in the New rather than in the Old Testament. I. The personal existence of a spirit of evil is clearly revealed in Scripture; but the revelation is made gradually, in accordance with the progressiveness of God's method. In the first entrance of evil into the world, the temptation is referred only to the serpent. In the book of Job we find for the first time a distinct mention of "Satan," the "adversary" of Job. But it is important to remark the emphatic stress laid on his subordinate position, on the absence of all but delegated power, of all terror and all grandeur in his character. It is especially remarkable that no power of spiritual influence, but only a power over outward circumstances, is attributed to him. The captivity brought the Israelites face to face with the great dualism of the Persian mythology, the conflict of Ormuzd with Ahriman, the co-ordinate spirit of evil; but it is confessed by all that the Satan of Scripture bears no resemblance to the Persian Ahriman. His subordination and inferiority are as strongly marked as ever. The New Testament brings plainly forward the power and the influence of Satan. From the beginning of the Gospel, when he appears as the personal tempter of our Lord, through all the Gospels, Epistles, and Apocalypse, h is asserted or implied, again and again, as a familiar and important truth, n. Of the nature and original state of Satan, little is revealed in Scripture. He is spoken of as a "spirit" in Eph. 2:2, as the prince or ruler of the "demons" in Matt. 12:24-26, and as having "angels" subject to him in Matt. 25:41; Rev. 12:7,9. The whole description of his power implies spiritual nature and spiritual influence. We conclude therefore that he was of angelic nature, a rational and spiritual creature, superhuman in power, wisdom and energy; and not only so, but an archangel, one of the "princes" of heaven. We cannot, of course, conceive that anything essentially and originally evil was created by God. We can only conjecture, therefore, that Satan is a fallen angel, who once had a time of probation, but whose condemnation is now irrevocably fixed. As to the time, cause, and manner of his fall Scripture tells us scarcely anything; but it describes to us distinctly the moral nature of the evil one. The ideal of goodness is made up of the three great moral attributes of God love, truth, and purity or holiness; combined with that spirit which is the natural temper of the finite and dependent creature, the spirit of faith. We find, accordingly, that the opposites of these qualities are dwelt upon as the characteristics of the devil, in. The power of Satan over the soul is represented as exercised either directly or by his instruments. His direct influence over the soul is simply that of a powerful and evil nature on those in whom lurks the germ of the same evil. Besides this direct influence, we learn from Scripture that Satan is the leader of a host of evil spirits or angels who share his evil work, and for whom the "everlasting fire is prepared." Matt. 25:41. Of their origin and fall we know no more than of his. But one passage Matt. 12:24-26 identifies them distinctly with the "demons" (Authorized Version "devils") who had power to possess the souls of men. They are mostly spoken of in Scripture in reference to possession; but in Eph. 6:12 they are described in various lights. We find them sharing the enmity to God and man implied in the name and nature of Satan; but their power and action are little dwelt upon in comparison with his. But the evil one is not merely the "prince of the demons"; he is called also the "prince of this world" in John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11, and even the "god of this world" in 2 Cor. 4:4; the two expressions being united in Eph. 6:12. This power he claimed for himself, as a delegated authority, in the temptation of our Lord, Luke 4:6; and the

40 Logos Library System temptation would have been unreal had he spoken altogether falsely. The indirect action of Satan is best discerned by an examination of the title by which he is designated in Scripture. He is called emphatically 6 SidfJoXos, "the devil." The derivation of the word in itself implies only the endeavor to break the bonds between others and "set them at variance"; but common usage adds to this general sense the special idea of "setting at variance by slander." In the application of the title to Satan, both the general and special senses should be kept in view. His general object is to break the bonds of communion between God and man, and the bonds of truth and love which bind men to each other. The slander of God to man is best seen in the words of Gen. 3:4, 5. They attribute selfishness and jealousy to the Giver of all good. The slander of man to God is illustrated by the book of Job. Job 1:9-11,2:4, 5. IV. The method ofsatanic action upon the heart itself. It may be summed up in two words temptation and possession. The subject of temptation is illustrated, not only by abstract statements, but also by the record of the temptations of Adam and of our Lord. It is expressly laid down, as in James 1:2-4, that "temptation," properly so called, i.e., "trial," is essential to man, and is accordingly ordained for him and sent to him by God, as in Gen. 22:1. It is this tentability of man, even in his original nature, which is represented in Scripture as giving scope to the evil action of Satan. But hi the temptation of a fallen nature Satan has a greater power. Every sin committed makes a man the "servant of sin" for the future, John 8:34; Rom. 6:16; it therefore creates in the spirit of man a positive tendency to evil, which sympathizes with, and aids, the temptation of the evil one. In this passage it is a symbolical representation of the king of Babylon in his splendor and in his fall. Its application, from St. Jerome downward, to Satan in his fall from heaven arises probably from the fact that the Babylonian empire is in Scripture represented as the type of tyrannical and self-idolizing power, and especially connected with the empire of the Evil One in the Apocalypse. In the Gospels generally, in James 2:19 and in Rev. 16:14 the demons are spoken of as spiritual beings, at enmity with God, and having power to afflict man not only with disease, but, as is marked by the frequent epithet "unclean," with spiritual pollution also. They "believe" the power of God "and tremble," James 2:19; they recognized the Lord as the Son of God, Matt. 8:29; Luke 4:41, and acknowledged the power of his name, used in exorcism, in the place of the name of Jehovah, by his appointed messengers, Acts 19:15; and looked forward in terror to the judgment to come. Matt. 8:29. The description is precisely that of a nature akin to the angelic in knowledge and powers, but with the emphatic addition of the idea of positive and active wickedness. This word is frequently used in the New Testament, and applied to persons suffering under the possession of a demon or evil spirit, such possession generally showing itself visibly in bodily disease or mental derangement. It has been maintained by many persons that our Lord and the evangelists, in referring to demonical possession, spoke only in accommodation to the general belief of the Jews, without any assertion as to its truth or its falsity. It is concluded that, since the symptoms of the affliction were frequently those of bodily disease (as dumbness, Matt. 9:32; blindness, Matt. 12:22; epilepsy, Mark 9:17-27), or those seen in cases of ordinary insanity (as in Matt. 8:28; Mark 5:1-5), the demoniacs were merely persons suffering under unusual diseases of body and mind. But demoniacs are frequently distinguished from those afflicted with bodily sickness, see Mark 1:32; 16:17, 18; Luke 6:17, 18; the same outward signs are sometimes referred to possession, sometimes merely to disease, comp. Matt. 4:24 with 17:15; Matt. 12:22 with Mark 7:32, etc.; the demons are represented as speaking in their own persons with superhuman knowledge. Matt. 8:29; Mark 1:24; 5:7; Luke 4:41, etc. All these things speak of a personal power of evil. Twice our Lord distinctly connects demoniacal possession with the power of the evil one. Luke 10:18. Lastly, the single fact recorded of the entrance of the demons at Gadara, Mark 5:10-14, into the herd of swine, and the effect which that entrance caused, is sufficient to overthrow the notion that our Lord and the evangelists do not assert or imply any objective reality of possession. We are led, therefore, to the ordinary and literal interpretation of these passages, that there are evil spirits, subjects of the evil one, who, in the days of the Lord himself and his apostles especially, were permitted by God to exercise a direct influence over the souls and bodies of certain men. 42 Logos Library System Page 1 BA'AL, the supreme male divinity of the Phoenician and Canaanitish nations, as Ashtoreth was their supreme female divinity. Some suppose Baal to correspond to the sun and Ashtoreth to the moon; others that Baal was Jupiter and Ashtoreth Venus. There can be no doubt of the very high antiquity of the worship of Baal. It prevailed in the time of Moses among the Moabites and Midianites, Num. 22:41, and through them spread to the Israelites. Num. 25:3-18; Deut. 4:3. In the times of the kings it became the religion of the court and people of the ten tribes, 1 Kings 16:31-33; 18:19, 22, and appears never to have been permanently abolished among them. 2 Kings 17:16. Temples were erected to Baal in Judah, 1 Kings 16:32, and he was worshipped with much ceremony. 1 Kings 18:19,26-28; 2 Kings 10:22. The attractiveness of this worship to the Jews undoubtedly grew out of its licentious character. We find this worship also in Phoenician colonies. The religion of the ancient British islands much resembled this ancient worship of Baal, and may have been derived from it. Nor need we hesitate to regard the Babylonian Bel, Isa. 46:1, or Belus, as essentially identical with Baal, though perhaps under some modified form. The plural, BAALIM is found frequently, showing that he was probably worshipped under different compounds, among which appear 1. BAAL-BERITH (the covenant Baal), Judges 8:33; 9:4; the god who comes into covenant with the worshippers. 2. BAAL-ZEBUB (lord of the fly), and worshipped at Ekron. 2 Kings 1:2, 3, BAAL-HANAN. a. The name of one of the early kings of Edom. Gen. 36:38, 39; 1 Chron. 1:49, 50. b. The name of one of David's officers, who had the superintendence of his olive and sycamore plantations. 1 Chron. 27: BAAL-PEOR (lord of the opening, i.e., for others to join in the worship). We have already referred to the worship of this god. The narrative (Num. 25) seems clearly to show that this form of Baal-worship was connected with licentious rites.
