17 Backing Up Active irectory You must install the indows erver Backup feature from the erver Manager console To perform backups from the command line, you must install indows Powerhell (cannot be installed on erver Core) indows erver Backup supports the use of C and drives as backup destinations, but does not support magnetic tapes as backup media You cannot perform backups on dynamic volumes Use erver Backup or the badmin.exe command-line tool Must be a member of the Administrators group or the Backup perators group P P onna arren 5-1

31 estoring Active irectory using normal replication using wbadmin and ntdsutil You can use wbadmin to perform a nonauthoritative restore of Active irectory estores a single Active irectory domain controller to its state before the backup Then the replication process will update the domain controller with the most recent information after the restore is complete P P onna arren 5-1

32 on-authoritative estore hen you open a Command Prompt to restore the system state, you perform a nonauthoritative restore the Active irectory database is restores to the exact state it was in at the time of the backup However, the next time an Active irectory replication occurs, the other domain controllers will update the newly restored system with any changes that have occurred since the backup took place This means that if you are trying to recover objects that you accidentally deleted, the replication process will cause the system to delete the newly restored objects P P onna arren 5-1

33 Authoritative estore To restore deleted objects, you must perform an authoritative restore to do this, you must restart the computer in irectory ervices estore Mode (M) by pressing F during the boot process and selecting the appropriate entry from the Advanced Boot ptions menu log on using the Administrator account and the M password specified during the operating system installation, then do a state restore using badmin.exe ext use the tdsutil.exe tool to specify the objects that you want restored authoritatively Make sure you know the M password P P onna arren 5-1
