AGENDA Performing Map Cartography Presentation Title using Esri Production Mapping Name of Speaker Company Name Kannan Jayaraman
Agenda Introduction What s New in ArcGIS 10.1 ESRI Production Mapping Mapping and Charting Solution Overview Cartographic Product Management Cartographic Production Workflow Product Library Cartographic Data Cartographic Editing Visual Specification Surround Elements and Layout rules Printing and Exporting
Introduction o Esri Production Mapping provides cartographic tools o For managing map products o Creating high quality, high-volume map products o Generating reference grids based on product specifications o To streamline your database and map production o The industry specific solutions extend ESRI production mapping by adding product specific schemas, map templates and validation tools. o Standardize and centralize detailed cartographic production with tools for creating and maintaining derived data, symbology, page elements, and maps.
Product Changes from to 10.x Esri Esri Esri Esri
What s New in ArcGIS 10.1 ESRI Major change Production Mapping MPS-Atlas (map book functionality) is now an optional part of the Esri Mapping and Charting solutions installation New Functionality Introduction of a new PDF map exporter that allows for the creation of press-ready PDF files which support spot color, tinting, and overprinting directly from ArcGIS for Desktop.
What s New in ArcGIS 10.1 ESRI Production Mapping Cartographic Editing The Production Cartographic Editing toolbar has been added, allowing for easy access to a number of new or existing editing tools focused primarily on utilizing feature class representations. The new tools allow you to change the visibility of features (using feature class representations) and annotation without having to remove features from the database or set definition queries on the layer.
What s New in ArcGIS 10.1 ESRI Production Mapping Cartographic Data Symbology Page layout and elements Production PDF map exporter and much more Several other enhancements have been made to editing functionality as well as to the product library within Esri Production Mapping
Mapping and Charting Solution Overview Extend the functionality of core ArcMap and ArcCatalog applications by providing efficient production and maintenance of digital cartographic database. Tools to assist users with incorporating already existing cartographic and digital map data. Also tools are available that help users in the creation and editing process for new map products and spatial data.
Cartographic planning process Decision making process Determine the objective of map Know your audience Communication method Items to consider Organizational standards Update frequency How will the map be displayed Hard copy Digital Cartographic production workflow steps
Carto Production workflow
Production Mapping Cartography Concepts Central map storage Multiple users with multiple maps Maintenance of map editions over time Technical lead configures dynamic templates Enforced standards and reuse by production staff Templates for steps in cartographic production workflow Managed and disseminated through the Product Library Production Workflow Tech Lead Product Library Production Staff
Product Library The product library is a geodatabase that allows multiuser environments to centralize information and behavior for cartographic and digital data production Production business rules, documents, and spatial information are stored inside the product library, allowing an organization to enforce and standardize production. Data model information, data validation rules, geographic extents, symbology rules, and map documents can all be managed inside the product library as examples of production business rules.
What is the Product Library? Centralized management Access to specific tasks Enforce data standards Supports the production cycle Data extraction and editing On-the-fly attribute validation Quality control Stores geometry and attribute rules Cartographic production Map products Cartographic specifications Product Library
Solution (Level 1) Top level of Product Library Domain or industry group Set visibility if using Enterprise SDE geodatabase True other users can see it False - default Establish default spatial reference Document storage Within the product library Data is stored within the geodatabase In a separate file folder on disk 1. Solution
Hierarchy in product library Solution Domain or industry group with a project or solution Product class Series Type of hardcopy or digital geographic products being created for a specific purpose Set of products created as geographic or thematic subset of product class Product Instance An individual map document with series A geographic extent of product Area of Interest Area of interest
Document Management in Product Library Any file can be stored in Product Library RFP, SOP, ancillary data, xmls, etc. Check in/out, undo, get local copy Exclusive locking Versions Restore Get local copy Searching File metadata Status Multiple criteria searching Product Library
Setting Product Library permissions Only available with Enterprise SDE Administrator sets permissions Two database connection files Administrator (DB owner) User Product Library Establish users by Windows login Permissions set at series level Inherited to all products in series» Edit, Check out, Check in, Read only

Cartographic Data Creation Data used for cartographic production Features Attributes Tools in Production Mapping to create/update features and attributes Grids and Graticules Designer Create bands from features and rasters Calculate Max Elevation Figures Magnetic Calculator Magnetic Isolines
Grids What are Grids and Graticules? Evenly spaced parallel or perpendicular lines on a map Used for reference Ex. UTM projection Graticules Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) US National Grid (USNG) Latitude and longitude lines True location on earth
Grids available in ArcGIS Grids and Graticules Wizard Accessed from the data frame properties Creates grids as graphics that update dynamically Visible only in the layout view Make Grids and Graticules Layer Geoprocessing tool in Cartography toolbox Creates grids as static features and grouped as layers Visible in data and layout view
Magnetic tools Magnetic Calculator Finds declination angle between true and magnetic north Requires point features with height Magnetic Isolines Angular difference from true to magnetic north (magnetic variation) Used for compass navigation with a map Creates isomagnetic lines User-specified date World Magnetic Model World Magnetic Model 2005
Magnetic Tools
Cartographic Editing
Cartographic Editing Improving the visual clarity of geographic data Enhancing the communication of map Examples of cartographic editing Annotation Editing Generalization of Features Masking annotation Symbol refinement
Editing Cartographic Data Workflow 1st map edition - 100% review of map data Manual review Screen review Plots QA/QC grid Automated Other map editions - focus on changed features/areas Attribute changes that cause symbology to change Adds/modifies/deletes of features/geometry
