Biographical Note The Wolfe family lived in Eddy and Plains, Montana, from about 1896 to Otto and Hannah Wolfe had at least four children: Max, Lester, Richard, and Leo. Mrs. Hannah Wolfe had family in Bagley, Wisconsin, Chicago, Illinois, and Dubuque, Iowa, including brothers Phil and Dick Luber, as well as Emma, Minnie, and Carrie. The Wolfes also had German-speaking relatives, including G. S. Wolfe, of Guttenberg, Iowa. In 1909, Otto Wolfe was a section foreman with the Northern Pacific Railway in Plains, Montana. By 1911, the Wolfe family had moved to Eddy, Montana. According the 1915 Polk Directory for Sanders County, Montana, Otto Wolfe was a section foreman with the Northern Pacific Railway at Eddy. 2 The collection includes incoming correspondence, postcards, and photographs dating from 1896 to The collection mostly represents the personal interests and members of the Wolfe family, with particular focus on photographic images of children and the death of the Wolfe's infant son. Use of the Collection Restrictions on Use Researchers are responsible for using in accordance with 17 U.S.C. and any other applicable statutes. Copyright not transferred to The University of Montana. Administrative Information Arrangement The collection is divided into two series: Series I: Correspondence, 0.1 linear feet, Series II: Photographs, 0.65 linear feet, Acquisition Information Gift of Dorothy Hunton, Processing Note The actions of the original processors are unknown. In 2002, the collection was reprocessed to include photographs previously processed with the "Montana Photographs by Subject" of the Archives general photograph collection. Detailed Description of the Collection Series I: Correspondence, linear feet The series contains twenty letters from friends and relatives of the Wolfe family, most of which are addressed to Mrs. Otto Wolfe. Many of the letters pertain to the loss of the Wolfe's infant son, Richard, around September Eight of the twenty letters are written in German. Two additional letters and stockholder receipts from Jewel Mining and Milling are addressed to Max Wolfe, The The series also contains eight personal postcards addressed to Hannah, Lester, and Max Wolfe. 2

These include personal photographs printed on postcard paper, some of which contain brief notes about the contents of the image and letters. Many of the photographs are of women, and couples. These include pictures taken at their homes and in photography studios. Other photos show children at play with their animals and women engaged in domestic activities. A smaller portion of the photographs presumably have Eddy, Montana as the backdrop. There are images of Eddy, Montana businesses and residents.
