1 Cleadon Village Atlas Timetable of Events Updated: 05/05/13 * Related events organised through the Limestone Landscapes Partnership are events with elements still to be confirmed. Meet in the Discovery Museum foyer, Newcastle: Meet at Cleadon Water Tower 11:00am - 4:00pm Project geologist,, will be giving a talk on how the geology of the area has shaped Cleadon s history and what we see around us today. This will be followed by an introduction to the project and a led discussion on current perceptions of the landscape. Archivist Peter Hepplewhite will talk through the various types of historic documentary resources available to explore Cleadon s past., Ivan Dunn, will be leading species identification and surveying day on the Cleadon Hills. The aim is to identify and record as many species as possible in the 5 hours allocated. We'll be looking for birds, flowers, butterflies, insects, anything! From this we hope to see just how important the area is for wildlife. Morning session is FREE but entrance to museum will be available at a discount group rate of 10 for over 60s and 11 for under 60s or 9.75 and 13 for an annual pass (which is a 25% discount on full fee). Meet at Easington Welfare Centre 10.00am 2.00pm The Old School Room Cleadon local History group meeting 7.00pm? Location 11:00am - 2:00pm - 3 hour walk pond landscape history research - what to look for and some of the pitfalls. Session will include an introduction to new technologies like LIDAR survey as well as more traditional methods of remote survey. session in the afternoon for those who are interested. The project ecologist, Ivan Dunn, will give an introduction to the wonderful variety of flowers and grasses that can be found on the Magnesian Limestone Plateau. Project geologist,, will re-run his excellent talk on the geology of the area given at the recent launch. He will explore how geology has shaped Cleadon s history and what we see around us today. Second part of our wildlife surveying series, Ivan Dunn will be looking at another habitat in the area to determine just how good its ecological value is. Come along and improve your identification skills as we walk the paths and lanes South of Cleadon looking for what wildlife is found there. The project archaeologist,, will explain how we set about recording and interpreting the historic landscape. This is a hands-on fieldwork session, please wear suitable footwear. 4 , 12th June * landscape Guided Walk: In search of marl slate fossils pond Meet at Wingate Quarry Local Nature Reserve car park at 10am. who will explain how we set about recording and interpreting the historic landscape. This is a hands-on fieldwork session, please wear suitable footwear. A walk through the Limestone Landscapes, Old Wingate LNR and an opportunity to hunt for fossils in the marl slate pile at Cassop School. Walk is 8 miles (6 hours), rated Easy Ken Bradshaw, Heritage 15th June * Sunday 16th June * Limestone Linx Launch and celebration Fossil ride: BIG LIME BIKE RIDE Guided Walk: Botanical treasures of the Magnesian Limestone Starts at Coxhoe Leisure Centre 10am-4pm Meet on road from Ferryhill to Bishop Middleham, opposite Hope House Farm 11am Come and explore the wonders of the Limestone Escarpment by bicycle and on foot. A series of events for all the family, with a mixture of very short distances for younger ones to the 20 mile BIG LIME BIKE RIDE Walk led by John Burgess geologist and natural historian. Walk is 5 miles long (5.5 hours), rated Medium Booking is required as the Big Lime Bike Ride is limited to 20 people Ken Bradshaw, Heritage John Burgess, Geologist 19th June * Thursday 20th June * Friday 21st June Thrislington Quarry:Presentation on the Limestone Landscapes and guided walk Hartlepool Headland Ghost Walk Looking at Cleadon s Built Heritage Thrislington Quarry and National Natural Reserve 10am 4pm Meet at St Hilda s Church, Hartlepool. 6.30pm -8.30pm A short talk on the Limestone Landscapes with Ken Bradshaw, Heritage, followed by a walk into the reserve to view Magnesian Limestone grassland flowers and invertebrates with a search for fossils in the marl slate pile. 5 pond nd June 22nd June * Thursday 27th June Looking at Cleadon s Built Heritage Hawthorn Dene Family Day Field workshop: undertaking a geological survey of the local area pond Hawthorn Dene Nature Reserve 11am-3pm Location and time how we set about recording and interpreting the village s built heritage. This is a hands-on fieldwork session and part of a general survey; more detailed building recording sessions will take place next month Second of two sessions led by project archaeologist, looking at how we record and interpret the village s built heritage. This is a handson fieldwork session and is a general survey; more detailed building recording sessions will take place next month Come and explore the beautiful woodlands and get involved in some family friendly woodland activities. Geologist,, will conducting a geological survey of the area with your help. This is a hands-on field workshop where Brian will show you how to identify different types of rocks and their formation and explain a little bit about the process by which they were laid down as well as how they influence the landscape we see today. Also learn how a survey is conducted and information recorded. No experience necessary just stout boots and appropriate outdoor weather gear.
