1 Newsletter of the Department of Mineral Sciences In this Issue Liz Cottrell Nifty Fifty Speaker New Acquisitions from the 2014 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show Volume 4, Number 4 Rocks Meteorites Gems Volcanoes Minerals Liz Cottrell s Nifty Fifty Experience Spring 2014 Curator Liz Cottrell was selected to be one of the USA Science and Engineering Festival's "Nifty 50" -- a group of "noted science and engineering professionals who fan out across the Washington, DC area to speak about their work and careers at various middle and high schools." Liz visited St. Anthony Catholic School in Northeast DC and spoke to the assembled middle school students about "Volcano Breath." Students learned that volcanoes erupt ash and gas, why and how volcanoes erupt, what kinds of gases volcanoes release, and what eruptions can mean for those living nearby, aircraft overhead, and global climate. Liz s presentation involved lots of audience participation: from quizzes to audienceassisted explosions! Prizes were dispatched liberally. Following the presentation students spent time handling and interrogating volcanic samples from the National Museum of Natural History's Rock Collection. The morning closed with a lunch wherein Liz had the opportunity to get to know some of the Top photo: Students inspect scoria and pahoehoe lava from Hawaii. 2 Page 2 Volume 4, Number 4 Spring 2014 New faces in DMS In October 2013, Devin Schrader started a post-doc with Tim McCoy in the Department of Mineral Sciences. Devin received his PhD in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona in May 2012 working on the formation and alteration conditions of a hydrated group of carbonaceous chondrites. This research was followed by studying the in situ O-isotope and Al- Mg systematics of chondrules from carbonaceous chondrites at the University of Hawaii. Devin s research at the Smithsonian focuses on sample science in support of the OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission. Jing Zhang is a Buck Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Mineral Sciences, and is working with Cara Santelli and Jeffrey Post on geomicrobiology research. Jing is currently working on the role of fungi on the preservation of organic matter in clay minerals. Jing has a B.S. in Geology, a M.S. in Sedimentology from China University of Geoscience, Beijing, China, and her Ph.D. in Geomicrobiology is from Miami University. She is interested in the relationship between microbes, clay minerals, organic matter, and metals in the natural environment. She had several published papers on bioreduction of various clay minerals and metals by methanogens. Now she is planning to do research on fungi. She is excited about her new research project and happy to work in the Mineral Science Department. Tracy Warmington recently interned in the Department of Mineral Sciences during the month of April under the supervision of Cara Santelli and Jeffrey Post. Over the course of her internship, Tracy conducted archival-based research on a selection of historically significant gem objects and learned about the management of gem collections. Tracy is currently a Curatorial Assistant at the Mineralogical and Geological Museum, Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. She obtained her bachelor's degree in Geology from Syracuse University in 2008 and has completed graduate coursework in Museum Studies and Geographic Information Sciences.

3 Page 3 Volume 4, Number 4 Spring 2014 New faces in DMS Jennifer Jay just finished up her PhD at Cornell University working with Matt Pritchard. Her thesis work focused on the study of active volcanism in the central and southern Andes using seismology, thermal remote sensing, and InSAR. She is particularly interested in how deformation is related to other manifestations of volcanic unrest such as seismicity and eruptions. She is excited to begin her postdoc fellowship with the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program. Q?rius Program features Cara Santelli Cara Santelli participated in one of the Museum s Q?rius programs in April. Cara met with several visitors to talk about her research in the Department of Mineral Sciences. Cara s presentation was highlighted by cool 3-D images and petri dishes of microscopic mineralforming critters. Awards & Grants Yulia Goreva was awarded a 3 year NASA grant ($324,000) for the project Enabling Genesis science objectives through the Time-of-Flight SIMS analyses as a part of Genesis Collector Materials Cleaning Effort.
