Results from scientific drilling consortia such as the Ocean Drilling Program(ODP) and more recently the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program(IODP) have yielded considerable knowledge about the occurrence of gas hydrate in sediments. This knowledge will be critical for the successful commercial development of gas hydrate resources. Yet many old, erroneous concepts are deeply entrenched within the E&P community. These myths about gas hydrate include the belief that commercial gas hydrate deposits are always associated with a seismic Bottom Simulating Reflector (BSR), that the best gas hydrates are in remote areas, that development is 20 or 30 years away and will require entirely new methods of production, and that hydrate resources in the Gulf of Mexico have no net present value so they can be ignored in lease sales Successful development of natural gas from hydrates will require an accurate understanding of the nature ofl gas hydrate formation and occurrences, and especially an understanding of the relationship of gas hydrates to their host sediments a petroleum systems approach through the integration of information gained during the past five years, production of natural gas from hydrate should be viable in the near term within the life of recent deepwater leases Speaker Art Johnson Art Johnson is President and Chief of Exploration for Hydrate Energy International and is engaged in exploration efforts throughout the world. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Humboldt State University in 1974, with additional graduate work in Geology and Geochemistry at Louisiana State University. Prior to forming HEI in 2002, Art was with Chevron for 25 years. Among his positions were Division Geologist and New Trends Team leader. Art is currently President-Elect of the New Orleans Geological Society and co-chair of the AAPG/EMD Gas Hydrate Committee. He also chaired the Methane Hydrate Advisory Committee for the U.S. Secretary of Energy from 2001 to 2006 and has advised Congress and the White House on energy issues since Art is an Adjunct Research Professor at Tulane University, an AAPG Visiting Geoscientist, and Vice President of Technology for Gulf States BioFuels. Among his recent publications are two books, Economic Geology of Natural Gas Hydrates published by Springer and Alternative Energy and Fuels Technology, published by the Catalyst Group.

3 President s Corner by Richard Fossier Let me first apologize for missing the September luncheon which by all accounts went well. I hope everyone was satisfied with the luncheon fare and that the speaker was interesting and the topic pertinent. We are going to experience a change on the executive committee. We will be losing Greg Mickle our 2 nd Vice President who is being transferred. I hope you will join me in wishing Greg every success in his new posting. And so, we are actively recruiting a replacement for Greg in this key position on the executive committee. Please consider volunteering, the society needs you. If you have questions or would like to talk about it, please do not hesitate to call me or anyone else on the executive committee. As you know the SEG Convention is just around the corner and we are still in need of some volunteers to staff the SGS booth. A volunteer sign-up sheet is on the SGS website: Please review your schedule and if you can make a couple of hours commitment you will be making great use of your time for the society. This is an opportunity for the SGS to increase our membership and get the word out that we are back and vital. Rob Cunningham s paper the Shining Star of Katrina: LIDAR will be featured at the booth. Rob is at the School of Coast and Environment, Louisiana State University We are also working on the fall social and membership extravaganza. Doesn t Halloween at the Voodoo Garden of the House of Blues sound like a good way to get things jump started? Don t forget this is a FREE event to members of SGS and $20 membership dues for non-members. (See 2 nd VP s column for more details.) So mark you calendars and get in costume for lunch on Tuesday October 31, BOO!. Richard Volunteer to work at SEG's 76th Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Opportunities abound as you choose from being a session monitor, to stuffing delegate bags, to working with New Orleans area students. Register early online to insure best timeslots and opportunities!

8 2 nd Vice President s Corner by Gregory Mickle Thank you all for attending our first luncheon at the Holiday Inn in September. We had an excellent turnout and I hope we can keep our numbers climbing. The October luncheon location is currently being negotiated and you will receive an when it has been determined. For those who receive hard copies of the newsletter you can call any of the officers listed on the last page of this newsletter to learn where the October luncheon will be. We had a number of questions last month about the cost of the luncheon. It is currently $25.00 for members, $30.00 for nonmembers, $8.00 for student members and $10.00 for student non-members Our first social event for the year is currently being planned as lunch in the Voodoo Garden at the House of Blues. We ve booked it for Tuesday October 31, All Hallows Eve, from 11am to 2:00 pm. There will be food, beverages and music for all to enjoy. And remember this event is free to all current members of SGS. Costuming is encouraged and a prize for best dressed will be awarded. As always each SGS officer welcomes comments and suggestions. We want to make this organization the best that it can be. And your help in that will be appreciated. Greg Editor s Note: LePavillon will be the new location for SGS luncheons through the end of ALBERT P. BROWN, P.G.
