RESEARCH INTERESTS FIM-Chem model development and evaluation: Add gas phase chemistry into FIM-Chem, evaluate the simulations of gas tracers and aerosol, real-time forecast of air pollution, improve dust scheme and investigate the dust emission sensitivity to resolution and aerosol feedback. Inverse modeling: Improve model representation of aerosol distributions, in particularly Black Carbon (BC) through data assimilation using GEOS-Chem adjoint and WRF-Chem adjoint. Constrain long-term dust emission using spectral data and quantify the dust climate forcing using FIM-Chem. Dust scheme improvement: Improve dust simulations by optimizing the particle size distribution and constraining dust emissions using MISR AOD in GEOS-Chem. Aerosol radiative forcing: Investigate radiative forcing and heating of dust using 1

2 3-D chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) coupled with radiative transfer model (Fu-Liou-Gu), including the impact of aerosol vertical profiles and source regions on the radiative forcing and climate, etc. Tropospheric CO and ozone: Investigate the factors controlling tropospheric CO and ozone, including biomass burning, lightning, dynamic transport and anthropogenic activities, using satellite observations and GEOS-Chem. Air pollution transport: Investigate the long-range transport of black carbon (BC) and dust to the western U.S. and the relative contributions from different source regions; study the impacts of Asian summer monsoon on aerosols over Eastern China and the downwind areas as well as climate change effects on air quality. Asian summer monsoon and model evaluation: Investigate the seasonal rotation features of wind vectors and the wind onset and wind withdrawal of Asian summer monsoon; study twice wind onsets of monsoon over the Western North Pacific; evaluate Asian monsoon simulation of the IPCC AR4 AMIP model results by using statistical techniques.
